Mystagogy, a Greek word meaning
“the uncovering of mystery,”
encompasses the whole of our faith journey from birth to death.
In the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) initiation into the Christian community means living in a state of permanent mystery. From Easter to
Pentecost, there is a period of postbaptismal catechesis, or Mystagogy. This is a time for the newly initiated, along
with the members of the parish, to become closer together as a faith
community to examine more deeply the Gospel, to share in the Eucharist, and to do works of charity. During this joyful time, the enthusiasm of the newly initiated can inspire the faithful of the parish, who in turn can share their experience of the faith with them. Parishioners are invited to attend our Mystagogy sessions with the newly initiated Sundays after the 11am Mass in MacMahon.
Our parish Bible Study group will be continuing Deuteronomy on April 18th The Israelites have passed through the
desert and are poised to enter the Promised Land at last. Now, Moses gives
them his final instructions from God. All of this leads up to the coming of Jesus and God’s plan for our salvation. This is a
great time to join us in our study of God’s Word for us. We meet each Wednesday
morning at Crespi at 10:30. All are invited. Please join us!

The Reredos A Reredos is a back altar or the wall behind the altar. It is also called a retablo. The original Mission Reredos was installed in 1807 and was destroyed in 1852 when the roof collapsed. The replacement Reredos was designed and built by Mission curator Harry Downie in 1956 after reading diaries and descriptions by early visitors and using the reredos at Mission Dolores in San Francisco as a guide because there were no known renderings of the original. It is made of painted and gilded redwood. The Body of Christ on the Great Crucifix (obtained in 1791 from Mexico or possibly from the Philippines) has arms with leather sockets. In early Mission days, the body was physically taken down from the cross on
Good Friday in pageant style to dramatize the death of Christ. The original wooden cross was replaced in 1884. Statues of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. John the Apostle stand at the foot of the cross. Behind the blue altar cloth backdrop are a number of pipes from the organ
At the apex of the Reredos is a dove superimposed on golden rays which symbolizes the Holy Spirit. The niches hold statues of saints and almost all were acquired between 1792 and 1824. There is a mission named for each of the statues in the niches. They include (clockwise from the lower left, La Purísima Concepcíon (Immaculate Conception) St. Michael the Archangel, St. Anthony of Padua and St. Bonaventure. The statute of St. Charles Borroméo, acquired in 1792, stands in the prime position at the top niche of the Reredos. The mission churches typically reserved this position for their patron saint. Presumably, the Mission was named after St. Charles to honor the patron saint of both King Charles III of Spain and the Viceroy of New Spain, Carlos Francisco de Croix, rulers at the time of the founding of the Carmel Mission. The bas-relief circlets of St. Peter and St. Paul were acquired by Harry Downie in 1956. The original Reredos renditions of the two great Apostles can be found hanging on the wall in Our Lady of Bethlehem Chapel. Mark Noll, Professor of History Emeritus at Notre Dame University says "this is just the book for understanding the momentous changes brought on by the Protestant Reformation five hundred years ago.............and the impact on all that has followed." The Book Club meets at 2pm Saturdays in the MacMahon Center. Refreshments are served. The book is free; offerings to cover the cost of the book and shipping are gratefully accepted.

STEWARDSHIP
Crespi is the nexus of docent operations and is therefore intrinsic to our work at the Mission. It contains our library and office, and provides a base for
hospitality and fellowship. Crespi plays host to every
Parish activity from council meetings to every kind celebrations of life. One day conferences to spontaneous art conservation workshops, Crespi has seen it all. It is our home!
I conduct the CMB parish Bible Study class at Crespi Hall on each Wednesday morning at 10:30 PM. We have been using Crespi for the two plus years that we have been meeting. Over that time, I have seen Crespi grow in quality. The changes in the past year and continuing even now, have been
really great. The paint job and decor are pleasing and inviting. I have watched as the kitchen has grown from marginal to what promises to be a first class facility for the many groups that meet and commune there. The parish can be duly proud of this facility for its preserved historical flavor and its very workable meeting space.
The Saint Junipero Serra Chalice
This past Easter Sunday for the many who attended mass, a very special chalice was used during the celebration of the sacrament. This unique liturgical article shared with the Parish this Easter was the historic Saint Junípero Serra Chalice
The Saint Junípero Serra Chalice dates to our Parishes earliest missionary church. Later, this significant relic was lent to William Hartnell for his school chapel in Ranch Alisal now East Salinas. From here the chalice was intended to be sent to the priest serving at Mission San Antonio, but the Hartnell Family held onto the artifact. presented the Chalice to Sacred Heart Church in Salinas. After several years it was rediscovered and finally returned to the Carmel Mission Basilica in 1979.
Significantly, the Saint Junípero Serra Chalice was also utilized by the Holy Father and now Saint, Pope John Paul II as his personal chalice during the Laguna Seca Celebration. This give the chalice the distinction of being present and used in celebration by two Catholic Saints.
This unique liturgical artifact will soon be featured in our refreshed Mission Museum exhibit which recounts the life and legacy of Saint Junípero Serra.
