Minerale UQAT – University of Quebec in Abitibi-Temiscamingue Performance of advanced oxidation processes and of modified materials in the treatment of mine-impacted watersAbstract: Responsible management of contaminated effluents constitutes a major environmental issue for mine operators, who have to balance the need to optimize efficiency while maintaining clean and sustainable operations. Common groups of contaminants include mine drainage, cyanides, ammonia nitrogen, and salinity. The presentation starts with an overview of classical and new trends in the treatment of mine-impacted water with special focus on the identified groups of contaminants. Then, up-to-date knowledge on available technologies, when used in active and passive treatment systems, are discussed with advantages and limitations. Special emphasis is given to advanced oxidation processes and to modified materials, as promising approaches for the treatment of mine effluents in the Canadian context. The design criteria, operation requirements, and long-term performance is further discussed, together with leading examples of the research work of our group and from field- implemented systems. Finally, some perspectives and future research needs are identified. LECTURES Šlechtitelů 27 78371 Olomouc Czech Republic Phone: (+420) 58 563 4973 Fax: (+420) 58 563 4958 Email: [email protected]
