Canada 150: Canada’s UntoldStories By Harry van Bommel,Founder of the Project

My parents died in their 50s.If I don’t record their stories, they will be lost forever. Thatis an onerous task but alsoa thoroughly enjoyable one!

The boomers and theirchildren have rarely keptdiaries, journals, letters orother documents. We mayhave thousands of photoswithout captions stored on

our computers but we have few documents that tell ourstories. Canada 150: Canada’s Untold Stories wants tochange that.

The project encourages Canadians to record some of theirstories. It could be a short memory attached to a photo ormemento or a full-length book or film. It could be poems or acollection of love letters. It can be almost anything that canbe digitally photographed, read, watched or listened to forgenerations to come.

“But I don’t have any children,” some people will say. Or“Who would want my stories?” is another common

response.

In fact, your former classmates, the neighbours of youryouth or the descendants of your extended family (e.g.,through your aunts and uncles) and friends may all want tolearn from, and enjoy, your stories.

Imagine going to your local library and finding an index cardthat says they have your great-grandmother’s diaries. Wouldyou read them? Of course you would.

Do you know what the hardest thing is about recordingstories? Getting started!Do you know what the second hardest thing is? Stopping!

That’s what Canada 150 is about. Working with local andnational organizations, we will encourage you to get startedon recording your stories. Our website has a free onlinebook to help you get started (www.canada150.com).

What about the second part – stopping? Most people whowork on family trees will tell you that their research is neverdone. That is true. However, having July 1, 2017, Canada’s150th birthday as a deadline means that what is known bythen will be saved forever. Anything else you learnafterwards can be part of Volume 2!

Will people really want to read what you have written? Ihelped a friend in her 80s record her stories into a shortbook as a Christmas present for her family. Once shestarted sharing stories, there were many to tell. In fact, afew months after she gave the book to her family she toldme, “Harry, I think I have a sequel!” and then she laughed.

How to start? Write your family a letter once a week for 40weeks (but don’t give it to them). After 40 weeks you willhave 40-120 pages of letters that you can edit and puttogether in a book with captioned photos. It really is thateasy! If you write two letters a week about your childhood, your schooling, your friends and family, your work, yourtravels, your volunteer work, your highs and lows, your faith, your beliefs and anything else you like, you can have a bookdone in 20 weeks.

Driver Safety Course for OlderDrivers By Renate Crizzle

We all have heard a lot about older drivers in recent timeswith older drivers being labelled unsafe drivers. But for mostolder drivers this is not really true although, according to the

Insurance Institute forHighway Safety, whendrivers get to 75 and overthe crash rate increases. So, is there something wecan do to keep ourselvessafe on the roads as weage? It has been suggestedthat a refresher course that

would update our driving knowledge could prove beneficial. Well, at least Barry, one of our fellow Scarborough CARPmembers who took such a course, agrees.

Barry is a snowbird. While wintering in Florida heparticipated in an AARP (American Association of RetiredPersons) driver safety class which is specifically geared tosenior citizens. The course identifies ways in which olderdrivers can compensate for the physical changes that occuras we age. Each participant gets a workbook to keep at theend of the class. So I got curious and asked Barry if I couldborrow this workbook. Well, this workbook is veryinformative. It points things out to you that you may innatelyknow but are not really conscious of. It discusses decliningvision, diminished hearing, slower reaction time and theirconsequences on driving. Studies have shown that as weage reaction time typically increases about three tenths of asecond. And while three tenths of a second doesn’t soundlike much, it can mean the difference between having acrash and not having a crash!

Are you aware of the three-second following distance? Basically the rule says that you should maintain a three-second distance between your vehicle and the vehicletravelling in front of you. Well, what does that really mean? Do you know what a three-second distance is? The handbook suggests that while you drive you should locate a fixedpoint ahead, such as a road sign or other such marker, thatthe vehicle in front of you will pass. When the vehicle infront of you arrives at that road sign, start counting 1001,1002, 1003. If your own vehicle arrives at the road signwhen you say 1003 you have the three-second safe followingdistance. If you arrive before you count 1003, you are drivingtoo close. Try it out. You might be surprised (I was drivingtoo close although I would never have suspected that).

The work book talks about medications and their influenceon driving, physical limitations while also giving someexercise tips, about specific danger points (left hand turns, right of way situations), avoiding head on crashes, largevehicles on the road, drowsy, distracted and angry drivers, overtaking rules, major road signs and pavement markings. It also points out the importance of the proper distancebetween your breastbone and the centre of the airbag coverin your steering wheel to protect yourself from injury in casethe airbag inflates. The safe distance is 10-12” or 25-30cm. Measure it for the fun of it to see if you are sitting too

close to the wheel. Also, do you know where your handposition should be on the steering wheel to prevent injury toyour hands and arms in case of airbag inflation? The bestposition is the 8 and 4 o’clock position, followed by 9 and 3o’clock.

The book gives many little useful hints because some of ushave developed bad or lazy driving habits over time. It alsotalks about the importance of a proper fit between you andyour car such as being able to see above the steeringwheel, being able to reach controls with ease, being able toeasily adjust the driver seat, no tinted windshields, theimportance of side/curtain airbags (apparently older drivershave more side impact crashes), adaptive equipment suchas pedal adjusters, etc.

I found the review useful. I am interested in what ourmembers think, and would like to ask you 2 questions:

(1) (a) Do you think that taking a one day Driver SafetyCourse specifically geared to drivers over 50 such as theone offered by AARP for a small fee would be beneficial toyou? (b) Would you take such a course voluntarily?

(2) What do you think are the most important componentsof a driver safety course?

The Crime of the 21st Century – ByDianne Ojar-Ali, author of Mrs.Fraud and You.

How many of you believe that when Mrs. Fraud is runningaround the city it is only to commit Financial Fraud akaBanking Fraud? Now, I am not saying that your belief is notcorrect; I just wanted to let you know that it is a small pieceof the pie.

Some of the most common types of fraud committed are:Driver Licenses, Medical, Social Insurance, Character ofCriminal, Financial, Cyber and Electronic Pickpocketing.Other types are Insurance, Tax, Child Support, Religious,Nigerian Scam, Grandparents Scam, Western Union andGrants to name a few.

Let us look at Banking orFinancial Fraud, it is theeasiest to resolve becausethe financial institutions willforward it to the appropriatedepartment to investigateand if the result is in yourfavour, meaning you areinnocent, after they go backand forth with you and theycome to the conclusion thatyou are not at fault then

guess what they will credit you the missing funds. The otherside of the coin is if their investigation indicates that it issomeone you know, for example a family member or friendthen you can be responsible, ask questions when youspeak to the investigators.

What is a compromised or possibily compromised card oraccount? This is whereby; someone may or may not havetaken money from your credit or bank card. For example;compromised is when someone did take money from youraccount by copying your card and within 24-48 hours theycan deposit empty envelopes in the bank machines andthey will keep trying to withdraw funds by testing the cardwithin your cashback limit, (the limit that the bank allowsyou when you make deposits in the bank machines and youcan immediately take out that amount of money and the restis placed on hold until your check or cash deposited iscleared), and by that time the bank will get an alert andcontact you to verify the information. Your card will be frozenin the case of your credit card and with your bank card yourcashback limit will be reduced until you receive yourreplacement card.

Possible compromised is when there was an individualworking at XYZ from January to June for example and thatemployee was Mrs. Fraud and was fired. Every customer sheattended to to within that period of six months is a potentialVictim and as a precaution and follow up they are alsocontacted to verify the activity on their account. Assuming thefunds are not missing the client also must change their cardregardless if they choose to or not because Mrs. Fraud does notwork on a fixed schedule.

Now I just want to clarify that sometimes when you areshopping as Christmas is around the corner and we do notkeep track of our spending habits, the credit card or financialcompanies however are tracking your spending. It is in placeto protect you; however if it does not reflect your spendinghabits they will block your account. I do not want you to getupset, simply turn your card over and there is usually a 24hour contact telephone number. Please work with them, as Iwas one of them and if you need to increase your dailycredit limit, again choose a limit within reason and that you

can afford and pay back. The interest rates are very high andMrs. Fraud and her friends test your card limits and they donot care about you.

The lesson today is to keep track of your credit card andbank statement daily if possible but at least weekly. ASKQUESTIONS! Report any unusual activity as soon aspossible because there are time factors involved or you willhave to eat the loss. Place alerts on your credit bureau filesand order a free copy of your report and ensure that it is notreflected on your file. Get protection before you become avictim.

Life Style Tip - Finding Solutions ByJoe Robinson

Have you ever purchased orrented a PVR, bought a newcell phone, laptop orcomputer, tried to assemblea piece of furniture wherethe instructions are in

"stick-figure" language, or needed directions to a particularplace? We all have, and at times were stymied as to how tooperate the technology, put the pieces together, or find thecorrect path.

There are many ways to obtain answers and advice for theseissues. Don't be afraid to return to the store/dealer whereyou purchased the tech; most retailers are happy to showyou how to work a PVR, activate options on your phone orgive advice on how to assemble furniture. The Internet isalso a great place to find information on these items -- go toa search engine such as Google and type in words such as"Microsoft Word tutorial", "How to program a PVR", "findmap of Elmvale, ON". Another, time-honoured way ofobtaining assistance is to ask someone in your family, afriend or a neighbour. We used to say that if you want tofind out how to program a VCR, DVD or Blu-Ray player, aska teenager!

The bottom line is -- Don't be afraid to ask! And the flip sideto that statement is -- Don't be afraid to return the favour.

Amalgamation in the Health Sectorcan have Positive Outcomes forCommunities By Renate Crizzle

Most people are a bitskeptical that the changesin the health care systemwill have positive effects forthe population. Most regardit as a money savingscheme. However, oneRegion has indeed seen apositive effect. The Board ofthe Canadian Mental Health

Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch hasannounced that as a result of savings realized from theamalgamation of the Kawartha Lakes branch and thePeterborough branch they were able to add three new frontline positions. Those three positions are (1) Mental HealthCase Manager – Hospital to Home program in Peterborough,(2) Housing Support Worker in Kawartha Lakes, (3) Peeroutreach in Kawartha Lakes and surrounding areas.

As you know, there is a lot of work going on regardingrealigning and amalgamating health services inScarborough. So it is good to know that a positive outcomeis possible and has been achieved in one Region. Let’smake sure the same will happen for Scarborough.
