Best Practices A Message From Carr Lane Manufacturing President Alan Frost
2
M any of us have heard the expression, “Learn from the mistakes of others, because you can’t make them all
yourself.” As with most such sayings, there is a lot of truth in this saying. One way to take advantage of the
experience of others is to adopt the “best practices” of a particular discipline. In almost any field of
endeavor, there is a history of people who have done the same thing we are now attempting to implement.
Many industries have developed a standard approach that codifies the learning to be realized from the mistakes of
others. As a part of the drive to achieve “excellence” in
a subject matter, companies and individuals have
codified what has been shown to be a superior approach
into a list of “best practices.” Think the Toyota
Production System.
Oftentimes, adopting these best practices allows us
to avoid problems we had not even considered as
possible. Utilizing a best practice can illuminate an easy
solution to a problem by placing that problem in its
proper context.
The drive for continuous improvement in a business leads us to address a broad range of topics. Leveraging the
experience of experts in the field can save us time, money and aggravation. Therefore, when you encounter a complex,
difficult situation, draw on the “best practices” of others to help set you on the right path to continuous improvement and
the avoidance of repeating others’ mistakes.
“ Learn from the mistakes of others, because you can’t make them all yourself.”

Ball Lock Production Heads To Texas Concentrating Production To Improve Demand Needs
I n a letter to Carr Lane Manufacturing employees last month, CEO Nance Frost explained the decision to move all production of Carr Lane’s Ball Lock Pin product line to the company’s facility located in Austin, Texas, was made “in order to make best use of our resources
as we strive to serve our customers better.” The transition of the Ball Lock Pin Department to Austin will occur in several steps over the next several months, with a tentative completion date of the end of November 2016. The first step was shipping the majority of the Ball Lock Pin raw stock and some related machinery to Austin, which occurred in mid‐July. Consolidating the manufacturing of Ball Lock Pins in Austin has several advantages for Carr Lane as well as for our customers. First, it will allow us to take advantage of economies of scale; especially those of new capital investments in Austin. Secondly, this will simplify logistics and inventory with the move to a single manufacturing site reducing back orders and out of stock situations. Finally, Carr Lane Manufacturing will be able to re‐task current St. Louis Ball Lock team members to other positions within the St. Louis operation.
