During World War II, Naval Air Sta4on North Island in San Diego was a major con4nental base suppor4ng the opera4ng forces in the Pacific. Those forces included more than a dozen aircraD carriers, the Coast Guard,
Army, Marines and Seabees. During that period, John Sidney "Slew" McCain Sr. was a U.S. Navy admiral who held several command assignments during the Pacific campaign. McCain was a pioneer of
aircraD carrier opera4ons who commanded all land-‐based air opera4ons in support of the Guadalcanal campaign and who aggressively led the Fast Carrier Task Force in the Pacific. His opera4ons (Cont. on Pg. 3)

May was named for the Greek goddess Maia who was identified with the Roman goddess of fertility Bona Dea. The Roman poet Ovid wrote that May is named for the maiores, Latin for "elders." Casa is brimming with exciting activities to keep everyone engaged. We’ve revamped our calendar with exciting and intellectually engaging activities, among them Live Morning News with Rick Chavez, Today Show with JR, and Armchair Storytelling. We’ll also be introducing new Scenic drives. We’re also bringing back Casa signature events, including Cinco De Mayo, Casa’s Got Talent, Memorial Day, and Mother’s Day. Oh yes, we also continue our weekly Casa University lectures and our May Champion for Seniors will highlight Basic Diet & Nutrition. The key to success is the passion of the staff. I believe you will agree that our dedicated staff deserve recognition and appreciation. Everyone has invested time and effort to make the paper mache and pinata decorations. They’ll also share delicious dishes from various regions of Mexico. As if that isn’t enough, they’re also preparing their acts for Casa’s Got Talent. With all this activity, plus their daily tasks, I believe their incredible energy stems from their desire to be the best they can be and to offer the best of themselves to you. I’m proud of the entire Casa staff. Because of them, Casa Family is a warm, welcoming, joyful, closely-knit family…a family like no other. To all new residents, welcome to your new home. To all our residents who have been here….you’re in for an exciting ride! Let’s celebrate life! God bless you all. I love you. Ann Villapando - Corporate Executive Director

Dear Residents Happy Birthday!
McCain (Cont.)
off the Philippines and Okinawa and air strikes against Formosa and the Japanese home islands caused tremendous destruc4on of Japanese naval and air forces in the closing period of the war. For Casa resident Marcus Coffman, Admiral McCain was a role model extraordinaire. “My first commanding officer at North Island was John S. McCain who was U.S. Senator John McCain’s grandfather,” said Coffman. “When about 15 of us were assigned to North Island, where we trained as aircraD mechanics, he came around and treated us just like a father, asked us how we were doing, this and that. He told us to do our work and do our job and get promoted. He wished us well and he was a great influence on all of us because he took such a personal interest. I’ll never forget the man.”
HISTORIC AIRFIELD
NAS North Island is recognized as the "Birthplace of Naval Avia4on". But in the 40s Coffman and his mates were just rookies. “He was a man who took interest in a bunch of seamen who didn’t know anything about aircraD but he wanted us to get ahead,” said Coffman. “He advised us to not waste our money around the bars and to stay away from ge`ng in fights and coming home with a black eye. He was a great influence on me. He made me feel like I was at home and that I did have a future in life -‐ which at that 4me I didn’t think I had.” Sadly, Admiral McCain died on September 6. 1945, only four days aDer the formal Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri.

By Kathy Blackmon It’s nice to know my grand-‐daughter Antoinece Gavin is re4ring from the Air Force but also that she was a recipient of a Bronze Star medal because of her service in Afghanistan. She is a Lieutenant Colonel but she is also a Nurse Prac44oner.
In Afghanistan, men do not want their wives to see male doctors so, for her to come in was a blessing because she was able to help a lot of the women there who may go five years without seeing a doctor.
She was able to tell them how to take care of themselves, how to take care of a baby once it was born, and what to do to
make sure she did the right things by the baby.
They just did not understand or know. They wanted to have children but didn’t realize what it takes and you have to be prepared so they could grow up and be strong. They were very pleased with having her there.
She’s so dedicated to helping people that she started when she was out of high school ac4ng as a Candy Striper. So she had this in mind all along that she would go into a service.
Anything where she’s helping people is very rewarding for Antoinece. She believes in it and loves to do it. I’m just so proud of her I don’t know what to do.

Richard Jones: Casa’s Renaissance Man
I was a flight surgeon in the Navy for 30 years and I traveled a great deal and lived all over the world. I lived in Italy for several years and lived in Iceland and Greece briefly. I studied briefly in France and got around Europe quite a bit.
I took art classes in school and, as a matter of fact, I’ve taken art at several universities. As a surgeon, though, the time factor was really a problem. My studies were interrupted while I was involved with my medical life and lessons came in spurts because there’s rarely been a steady time of study.
The training I did receive was in various cities like Philadelphia and Chicago but it’s been bits and pieces. I’ve also taken art training, both in sculpture and in painting. Overseas, I spent a year at the Academy of Art in Italy and I’ve had some training in France. So, I’ve had a little bit of training in all mediums; not that it’s been successful.
These days I’m limited to either water color or acrylics. I had a huge amount of easels and a basketful of oil paints but when I moved to Casa Sandoval I had to throw them away because I didn’t have room. I intend to start again, mostly in acrylic but I’m trying to get organized first.
I’ve never put anything up for sale; most of the things I’ve given away to family members. Many of them want me to paint their kids or something like that and sometimes I see little kids and think they would be nice to paint. Much of it has been done through the use of photographs. Usually it’s a picture I’ve grabbed and then painted. I would prefer to paint from life but I can’t get anyone to sit (laughs) so I’ll paint from pictures.
I’d like to paint Ann, our Executive Director. She intrigues me with her coquettish way. If I had photographs of her, I’d choose the best from 2-3 photos and interpret them in my own way.

Champion for SeniorsFall Prevention
Casa’s Champion for Seniors seminar series was launched in April by Andrew Teran of Vital Link Medical Alert Systems. His discussion of Fall Prevention was extremely informative.
Teran said that those 65 and older are at the greatest risk for falling. There are many risk factors that lead to falls. Among them are an unstable gait or posture, impaired vision, high or low blood pressure, chronic illnesses, cardiovascular and neurological disorders, strong medications, carelessness, and dehydration.
Trying to do too much can also lead to falls. As we rush to the next activity, we may lose focus and stumble. Plan ahead, slow down, and pay attention to where you’re going.
Many people try to get dressed while standing up, causing them to lose balance and fall. Sit on the edge of the bed and put on one piece of clothing at a time. Use the chair arms to help you stand up.
If you do fall, stay calm and assess your situation. check for any cuts, bruises, bleeding, or any pain. If you can get up, do another self-check and take time to recover. Evaluate how and why you fell. It might help to prevent a similar fall. Also, tell your family and your doctor that you fell so they can look for other risk signs.
Champion for Seniors will be hosted by Casa Sandoval each month and will feature guest speakers addressing important topics for seniors and their families. The public is welcome. Visit www.casasandoval.com for the latest Champion for Seniors updates.

Mandala Mandala means circle in Sanskrit. People create and look at mandalas to center the body and mind.
An increasing body of clinical trials suggests that meditation can boost the immune system, reduce stress, combat depression, reduce pain, lower blood pressure, and stimulate the release of melatonin, a hormone believed to slow cell aging and promote restful sleep.
Coloring a mandala using pencil, crayons, paint, or pastels combines the benefits of meditation and art therapy.
People who color mandalas o"en experience a deep sense of calm and well-being. It's a simple tool that doesn't require any expertise, but it can be remarkably soothing and nourishing. Mandalas not only focus your attention, but allow you to express your creative side, which many of us neglect in our daily lives.
Sitting Tai Chi Si`ng Tai Chi is one of the most produc4ve and popular Casa ac4vi4es each week. Our residents get renewed energy and ac4vate healthier bodies.
Si`ng Tai Chi can add flexibility to your spine. Since it essen4ally protects the nervous system, it’s beneficial to have a strong and flexible spine.
Si`ng Tai Chi poses help massage the internal organs. These movements also help enhance the blood circula4on throughout the body.
Breathing and medita4on exercises performed while in a si`ng pose can help your mind and body relax.
These exercises help you firm and tone abdominal, obliques, and leg muscles. When a series of si`ng poses are done in the correct manner, you will get a perfect all-‐body workout, without ge`ng too 4red.
