Ants, roaches, termites and other household pests aren’tjust a nuisance they can cause a significant amount ofdamage to a home and can potentially be a serioushealth risk. However being diligent can help avoidthese problems when buying a new home or preventthem from entering your home.

Philip Hagen, sales manager for Pacific Pest Control, has been helpingout with his family’s pest control company since he was 16 years old.Hagen says a typical home owner calls in for ants and roaches and thecompany also fields calls daily regarding termites. “Our tropical climateallows pests to flourish all year so there is no break in their attack on ourhomes.”

Termites

Hagen says that termites are the most damaging pests that Pacific PestControl treats. “They can eat up entire kitchen cabinets, maneuverround a home using baseboards and get into every room without thehomeowner knotting it. Once they are in these rooms they will damagedoor jams, closets and anything inside they can eat – cardboard, boxes,shoes, clothes and family photos. They can nest behind drywall anddamage any wooden studs holding those sheets of drywall up. They canbe a very expensive problem to fix if they are not dealt withimmediately.” According to the Center for Disease Control’s Web site,termites cause more than $2 billion in damage each year.

If you don’t want these pests invading your homeHagen says the easiestand most cost effective thing to do is to modify your storage practices.Store items in plastic storage containers, especially if it is something youvalue or do not check on a regular basis. Outside your home, Hagenrecommends removing anywood stored up against the home and to trimtrees or brush that is touching the exterior walls. Remove any old treestumps because they tend to attract termites and serve as nesting sites. “Ifyou are building or renovating your home, make sure that the soil istreated before concrete is poured and all wood is pressure treated.”

For those in the market for a new home, Hagen says to be on thelookout for the following signs of a possible termite infestation. Checkthe quality of construction and look for cracks on the walls or by thewindows. If there is a concrete walkway around the home, is separating

from the main house. “Many times termites come from small cracks inthe home’s floor slab. If the house has a lot of gaps around the plumbingor hollow concrete walls, this wouldmake it easier for termites to enter.”

With all of the lumber being imported, Hagen says he has seen a spikein the number of Drywood termites. “These termites create droppingsthat look like piles of sand. Unfortunately, many times the cost to treatthe wood outweighs the cost to replace it.”

Ants and Roaches

Ants and roaches are just mild pests getting into your food. Roaches areconsidered an allergen source and an asthma trigger for residents.Roaches have also been known to carry Salmonella typhimurium,Entamoeba hitolytica – a parasitic protozoan, and polio.

Removing the food source will reduce the likelihood of ants and roachesinfesting your home, Hagen says. “Cover all food containers, clip allopen chip bags and wipe down your counters and tables after cookingand eating. Also, seal up around windows with caulking to prevent antsfrom entering and install a door sweep if there is a gap under the door toprevent roaches from entering.”

Be Proactive

A homeowner can catch these pests before the infestations get out ofhand or major damage is done to their home. Hagen says routineinspections of closets that are full of boxes that do not get used are oftenhelpful. “If termites are found, it’s best go get ahead of them and actquickly before you are not only paying for the cost to treat them but alsothe cost to replace your cabinet. Always remember, ‘A clean home is ahappy home!’”

Best Repair of Carpet Burnsepairing your flooring will keep it looking great and help itlast longer.Even carpet that is well taken care of may end upwith some significant damages that need repairing, and suchrepairs are often easy for homeowners to fix themselves.Professional carpet repair can be expensive. But what else

can you do when your carpeting is damaged by cigarette or other burns?Actually, with a little patience, you can usually fix the damage just as wellyourself. Here are tips to do it conveniently and effectively.When only the tips of the carpet fibers are burned, carefully cut off the

charred fiber with a pair of small sharp scissors. Lightly sponge the areawith amild detergent solution and again with clean water. The low spotwon't be noticeable when the carpet dries.If there is a large area of damaged carpet, you'll have to replace the

burned area with a patch cut from a piece of scrap carpet. Here's how:

Step1:From scraps, cut out a rectangle or square of carpet a little largerthan the burned area. In order for the patch to blend in with the existingcarpet without being highly noticeable, it must match the pattern in thecarpet or the pile must run in the same direction.

Step 2: Press the scrap firmly over the damaged area. Holding it care-fully in place, use a utility knife to cut around the edges and through thecarpet under it. Cut completely through the backing, but don't cut intothe carpet padding.

Step 3:When the entire damaged area is cut out, lift the burned piece

out of the hole. Check the patch for fit, and, if necessary, slightly trim theedges so it fits the opening exactly.

Step 4:To install the patch, stick a piece of double-face carpet tape orapply an adhesive to the padding on each side of the hole. Position thepatch, and firmly press the edges onto the padding. Let the adhesive dryfor several hours before walking on the patch.Deep burns, places where a significant number of fibers have been re-

moved, holes, and other plainly visible damages will require the use ofcarpet patches to make the area new again. Carpet patches are not dif-ficult tomake, especially if you have some remnants of the carpet leftoverin your garage, basement, or storage shed. If not, you will have to cut apiece from your existing carpet. Should this be necessary, choose an in-conspicuous area fromwhich you can get your patch, such as the cornerof a closet floor.Besides burns and holes, this carpet-patching method can be used to

fix areas of the carpet that have suffered significant discoloration. In anycase, a little patience and care canmake it a cinch to patch a carpet, help-ing to keep homeowners from replacing all of the carpet in a roomwhenjust a small portion of it is damaged.

Help with Removing Burns in CarpetsDo not panic, most times burns in carpets are caused by a spark from

either an open fire or a cigarette. The open fire burn could be harder tofix if a piece of wood fell out of the fireplace.Vinegar & Carb sodaMake up a small solution of carb soda and vinegar and leave on burned

area for a fewminutes, this should lighten the bur, if not, cut off the verytop with a pair of scissors.

ome real estate companies are there for clients from the initialcontact through moving in. this is true if the client is movingdown the street or up the coast. There are some key things thatsome estate companies will provide.When considering a goodchoice keep the following in mind.

KnowledgeThe estate company should have agents that are knowledgeable about

the area that the client ismoving to. In some cases thismay pose no prob-lem. In long distance relocation this may require a solid and expansivenetwork of agents though. There are a number of independent estateagents that have joined collectives just for this reason.Along with that knowledge should come the ability to make recom-

mendations and provide sources. It is very nice when a real estate agentcan provide youwith recommendations.Howevermany people want tobe able to look at something. When an agent or company can give youthe sources they use they empower you. By providing clients with sourcesthat allow the client to research for themselves the area they are relocat-ing to greater benefit can be added. The client can begin to develop aworking knowledge of where they are moving. In addition prompts forgreater dialogue and understanding may present themselves.

So, you can begin your search either through local agents that are partof larger collectives with agents in the area that you are moving to or bysimply researching the companies that are in the locations you are relo-cating to and check out to what extent they provide real estate services.

Additional ServicesKnowing someone in the place you are arriving can be comforting.

Also there are practicalities that youmay not want to deal with. In somecases a real estate agent may be able to recommend a car service or tem-porary housing. These can be invaluable when first arriving in an area.A number of real estate agents and companies may actually make thearrangements for their clients. This can remove much of the stress thatis sometimes involved in a major transition.Moving arrangements are another aspect that an agent or company

may be able to assist with. In many cases they may have established con-nections with local companies. These services would typically not be re-quired until after permanent housing is established though.

Cost ConsiderationNearly anything can be arranged. In some cases what the client re-

ceives may be limited by what the client pays. There are many qualitycompanies that can supplymore for less though. Simply because you cannot afford themost expensive real estate service does not mean that set-tling for less than acceptable service is the only option. If the real estateagent recognizes you as a serious buyer they will likely be in a positionto help you. Talking to them openly can prove to be one of the most ef-fective ways to get what you want at a rate that you can afford.

Wired vs. WirelessMany consumers choose to protect only the most vulnerable entry points of
