Easter Competition 2010

• This year our Easter Competition is an invitation to design and make an Easter Garden

• Easter Gardens are a tradition dating from at least Victorian times.

• Children gathered spring flowers and created gardens that showed as many parts of the story of Easter as possible.

• Your teachers will be telling you the events that happened before and after Jesus died on the cross.

• Your challenge is to reflect as many of them as possible in a miniature garden.(3 crosses, hill, empty tomb, path)

• You can work as an individual, pair, a group of any size or, if your teachers allow you to, a class or Year group.

• Gardens should be made on a tray with sides and use as much natural material and as many live elements as possible!

Make an Easter GardenYou need:

* A shallow tray or dish*Garden soil or potting compost

*Moss, cut grass or sand*Dried twigs

*Sewing thread *Small pot

*Flat stone large enough to cover the mouth of the pot

*Egg cups (or other small containers)*Small flowers

*Gravel/ Small stones

• To Make:• 1. Fill the tray with soil or potting compost.• 2. Arrange it to make a hill on one side of the tray.• 3. Cover the soil with moss, grass or sand.• 4. Make three crosses with dried twigs tied together

with sewing thread and place on the hilltop.• 5. Press the small pot into the hillside to make a

cave like the garden tomb. Place the stone over the mouth of the tomb.

• 6. Press egg-cups full of water into the soil around the garden and fill with flowers.

• 7. Make a path coming from the tomb with gravel, to show how the disciples ran to the tomb on Easter morning.

Fill in an entry form and give it to your teacher by next Wednesday

Make the garden and bring it into school on Monday 29th March

Gardens will be on display and used as part of the Easter Assembly
