Transitional Training StudentsSelkirk College ransitional raining students from

across the region put together an inspirational three-dayconference earlier this month that showcased the talentsof differently-abled adults. Called Branching Out, theconference featured 19 different presenters and 18 work-

shops between May 12 and 14 at Nelson’s enth StreetCampus. More than 120 participants took part in the con-ference that was geared towards practitioners, instructorsand families of adults with diverse skills.

Te conference was opened by Nelson-based studentNatasha Bidinoff-Gardiner, who set the tone for the threedays with her touching words. “We didn’t ask to be bornwith a disability or to be physically injured or physicallyabused, but it happened,” Bidinoff-Gardiner told the audi-ence gathered at Mary Hall. “We are judged and mocked. But instead of focusing on picking on each other’s weak-

nesses, why not learn to work together, accept each otherand collaborate to make life beautiful.”

Te conference featured workshops in massage, com-munication, re safety, self defence, entrepreneurship, dealing with stress, yoga, cooking and more. Tere wasa gala banquet at Nelson’s Mary Hall, a dance and plentyof opportunities for social engagement. “Te entire eventwas inspirational for all because it was so positive,” saidAllison Alder, the Chair of the Selkirk College School ofAcademic Upgrading & Development. “It will have a last-ing impact in the community as the event’s inclusivity and

the students’ capacity continues to ripple outward. Every-one had shivers and tears hearing rst hand what it’s liketo live with a disability in our society. Many new bondswere forged and ideas hatched.”

Selkirk College offers ransitional raining classes inNelson, Castlegar, Grand Forks and rail. Te classes enableadults with barriers or disabilities learn to participate morefully in daily life within their communities, including pre-paring for paid or unpaid work. Nelson Reconciliation WalkWhat does it mean to be reconciled? How can the

wounds suffered in Canada’s residential schools behealed? Aboriginal people today still don’t have access toclean water, healthy food or decent housing. What is ourcollective responsibility in the context of colonization?

One result of Canada’s 2008 Statement of Apology toFirst Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples was the creation ofhe ruth and Reconciliation Commission (RC). For six

years, the RC had as its mandate to learn the truth about

what happened in the residential schools. On May 31 theRC will present its nal report in Ottawa.

To mark this historic event and to work towards a newrelationship with Aboriginal peoples, KAIROS is plan-ning a Reconciliation Walk in Nelson at 12 noon on Fri-day, May 29 from City Hall to Lakeside Park. Participantsof all ages are invited to bring banners, to listen and toake action towards a possible new relationship betweenndigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples. KAIROS is
