Average declarationIn the late morning of 2 November 2021 two container feeder vessels were in collision whilst sailing on the Chao Phraya River in Thailand with the collision leaving one of the vessels holed and sinking.
The Chiang Khong had departed Bangkok in the evening of 1 November 2021 loaded with 51 containers of general cargo bound for Laem Chabang. She was proceeding downstream on the River.
The NP Pathum Thani, also loaded with containerised cargo, was sailing upstream towards Klong Toey harbour in Bangkok having come from Laem Chabang. As the vessels were in Samut Prakan Province and passing in front of the Samut Prakan provincial hall they collided with the NP Pathum Thani striking the port side of the Chiang Khong.
As a result of the impact from the bow of the NP Pathum Thani, the Chiang Khong was left with a hole in her port side measuring approximately 2m² with massive water ingress. As the crew tried to take steps to control the flooding, the helmsman steered the Chiang Khong towards the shore of the river Phra Samut Chedi district. The vessel eventually settled on the riverbed at the shore with only her superstructure left protruding above the water. The NP Pathum Thani was reported to have suffered minor damages by comparison.
The local authorities have ordered the owner of the Chiang Khong to salvage the vessel within the next three days. Containment booms have been place around the hull and steps are underway to offload the containers. An investigation into the collision is underway. Click here for video.

Stellar Banner S - editions 362, 363, 364, 365, 366, 374 & 377 - an investigation by the Republic of the Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator has found the Master’s decision to deviate from the vessel’s planned route was a causal factor in the grounding on 24 February 2020. Communication issues between the Master and the Officer on watch prevented good situational awareness regarding where the ship was, where it was heading, and whether there were any potential hazards to navigate. The Master also should have appreciated, having sailed the route many times, that with the late departure of the vessel, 50 minutes after low tide, water levels would be low as the vessel approached the seaward end of the buoyed channel and there was limited hydrographic information available for the route the Master took. The passage plan also had not been updated. The report made several recommendations including a revision of the company’s safety management systems so that Masters are required to conduct safety navigation briefings and any change
of course should be approved by shore-based staff.
Mercosul Santos - edition 422 - the vessel, which was towed to Brazil, Santos in April after suffering main engine problems, left the Port for sea trials on 22 October 2021 returning on 25 October 2021.
