Dear readers, welcome to Cinebook’s 20th catalogue.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Cine book’s creation. 10 years of bringing you the best in European comics; 10 years of open-ing new horizons for English-speaking comic fans throughout the world. Happy birthday to us — and thank YOU for your loyalty!

In 2015, Luc Besson started his long-await-ed adaptation of Valerian & Laureline for the big screen. In celebration, we decided to in-crease our publishing rate for this seminal series, with four titles coming out this year. The first two, from this catalogue, will see our heroes face danger, mystery and great uncertainty as to the future of our planet...

Way out in an unknown region of space,

Leo’s Survivors are also dealing with tempo-ral problems — but they’re definitely not in control. Follow Yoko Tsuno as she ventures all the way to another galaxy to assist her Vinean friends. And in Kenya’s sequel Na-mibia, Kathy Austin goes back to Africa to in-vestigate... well... a Nazi zombie! Let’s hope that this won’t be the case for the children of Alone — they’re already dealing with a lot of growing strangeness as it is...

For less otherworldly adventures, let’s turn to Spirou & Fantasio, who are ‘hot’ on the trail of a mysterious virus in ... Antarctica. A won-der they don’t come across Buck Danny, who is also embroiled in some shady dealings over the icy continent — albeit with more aerial dogfights. It’s also very cold for Najah

Cruz, the Insider, who’s working on escaping from a Russian gulag. On the other hand, XIII starts off his own latest adventure in a warm Afghani cave, although he, too, is the prison-er of a shadowy power.

Adapted from a bestselling novel by the author himself, a new series debuts in this catalogue: The Last Templar. Follow an ar-chaeologist and an FBI agent as they hunt for the fabled treasure of the Templars. For The Marquis of Anaon, a pleasant sea voy-age to Spain turns into a nightmare. As for the SPOOKS, there’s nothing pleasant about their current job: stopping Megan Chapel from unleashing a demon unto the world.

Far from the East Coast, The Bluecoats are chased into Mexico by a Confederate

patrol, to much hilarity and shenanigans. And Lucky Luke is still protecting the Old West, with three adventures that see him follow Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, try to prevent the Daltons from breaking into a prison, and get ... engaged?!

On to two other confirmed bachelors now: Blake & Mortimer go to Japan, with a two- volume adventure dealing with advanced robotic enemies — what else? Meanwhile Thorgal must use every ounce of cunning and courage he has to save his family from a mysterious plague. And finally, the Lament of the Lost Moors sounds for a bewitched Siobhán — will love save her from evil?

Ten years of Cinebook: 398 titles and 56 series for your reading pleasure!

Identified as a former Chechen guerrilla fight-er, Najah has been arrested by the FSB, the successor to the old KGB, and sent to a prison colony in Siberia — the infamous gulag. Iso-lated, hated by the Russian guards, the Insid-er is far from the luxury life her cover inside organised crime afforded her. Meanwhile, the power plays continue between the mafia, politicians and the intelligence services of Russia, the United States ... and elsewhere...

“Najah is ruggedly beautiful, but has a strong, well rounded personality and is a deadly assassin (who could easily beat Bond at his own game), as well as being intelli-gent and ruthless. If you like reading action adventure yarns then this would be ideal.” Gareth, BFKbooks

When a flight of unidentified fighters is photographed off the Antarctic continent, where no military presence is authorised, the carrier Harry Truman is sent to investigate. After a few reconnaissance flights, Buck and his friends locate a lifeless body on a drifting iceberg, as well as a suspicious cargo ship. Alongside the pilots of the French Navy, Colonel Danny will have to solve that mystery in the land of eternal ice.

“Buck Danny will remain a pillar of the Franco-Belgian comic world and THE refer-ence series on cartoon aviation.” Christophe Chanel, MyETVmedia

Sent to scout the enemy, Blutch and Chesterfield are chased by a Confederate patrol and forced to cross the Rio Grande to safety. But that safety is relative: stuck between Apache bandits and Mexican outlaws, our two Bluecoats have no choice but to disguise themselves as civilians — Blutch as a peasant, Chesterfield as a monk. But the nearby village is eagerly awaiting its new ‘padre’, and the villagers aren’t fooled by the deception...

“I think that The Bluecoats genuinely has something in it for all ages. [...] It’s got a good solid plot, a wry sense of humour and some thought provoking undertones.” Dion WintonPolak, Geek Syndicate!

Morton Chapel’s daughter Megan has come out of catatonia at last, but she didn’t come back to life alone. Seth, her demonic alter ego, is with her, and the two of them have already wreaked bloody havoc. The hunt is now on between Chapel, who’s convinced killing his daughter is the only solution, his team bent on preventing him from doing so, and Megan’s grandfather, an insane, megalomaniac industrialist who believes he owes Seth his fortune...

“The plot is rich and sophisticated. It’s helped by the art, which is stunning — detailed and dynamic. There’s a background hint of politics and the characters are engaging […]” Andy Shaw, Grovel

Thorgal and his family have left Arachnea’s island to continue seeking a place to live in peace. As they sail along unknown shores, they’re attacked by pirates, then rescued by Prince Zarkaj, who takes them to his palace and pampers them — especially Aaricia. But when Jolan and his mother turn out to have caught the terrible Blue Plague, the prince has them thrown into a guarded pit to die — and it’s up to Thorgal to escape in search of a cure.

“Yet again, Jean Van Hamme proves himself to be the absolute master of storytelling. I found myself reading this book and thinking that it shouldn’t work. [...] It works brilliantly, in fact. Van Hamme’s superlative writing is complemented per- fectly by the incredible art by Grzegorz Rosinski.” Richmond Clements, HiEx! Blog

One evening in Tokyo, air traffic controllers detect an unknown flying object and send two aircraft to intercept and identify it. However, the fighters’ last message before they crash into each other is ‘ryu’ — dragon! The whole business has deeply upset Professor Sato Akira, and he calls upon his friend Mortimer, who can always be counted upon for good advice. But before he’s even received the invitation, Mor-timer is already targeted by men hell bent on getting rid of him…

“A while ago, I did handstands over Jean Van Hamme and Ted Benoit’s version of these characters. Now I’m doing flips over the original! Jean-Baptiste Poulain is back in Paris when the Countess of Almedia invites him to join her salon in Andalusia. Her offer is too good to refuse, and they’re soon on their way to San Fernando by sea. During a storm, they narrowly avoid a collision with a drifting ship, the Providence. When they go aboard the derelict, all they find are corpses — and yet Jean-Baptiste is convinced he’s seen a survivor.

“Bonhomme’s gorgeous art is the shining light here — beautifully shown off in the original album format/size — and worth the entry price alone. Vehlmann is no slouch though, and his stories of young Jean-Bap-tiste Poulain who travels from place to place for to learn and experience and inev-itably become embroiled in some problem, are solidly empathetic.” Zainab Akhtar, Comics and Cola

Lucky Luke Backlist page 28-29

If the Old West is so well known, it’s in no small part because some of its own legends made sure they were recognised in their own time — like Buffalo Bill Cody and his Wild West shows. When Colonel Cody asks Lucky Luke to join his show, though, the lonesome cowboy humbly refuses, before jokingly sug-gesting recruiting the Daltons instead — after all, their stupidity is quite legendary! A sim-ple jest that will lead to many high jinks...

Born and raised in Belgium, author Mor-ris moved to the United States in 1946 and stayed six years. There, he worked for MAD magazine, gathered documentation on the Old West, and experienced first-hand Lucky Luke’s home. In 1992 the jury awarded him the Special 20th Anniversary Grand Prix at the International Angoulême Comic Festival. During his long career, he teamed up with some of the greatest names to create the ad-ventures of Lucky Luke.

The Survivors Backlist page 301. Episode 12. Episode 2

Separated by a temporal shift phenomenon, the human survivors are together again. But where some, such as Marie and Alex, have only spent a few weeks on their new planet, for the others it’s been six years! Six years they’ve spent with the Holorans, fellow castaways belonging to a felinoid race, one of whom Marie had rescued from hostile aliens. The Holorans have a plan: to use the very quantum anomalies that cause those temporal jumps in order to leave the planet.

“As always, a superbly engrossing book from Leo exploring the possibilities of our future where exploration and the fascination of life’s endless possibilities create the perfect backdrop for a story of survival, determina-tion and discovery.” Simon Chadwick, The Cartoonists’ Club of GreatBritain

Namibia, 1949. Three years after the Nurem-berg trials, a white man is photographed in the middle of a corn field: it’s Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, who’s supposed to have committed suicide in his cell. Worried about the geopolitical implications of the discovery, MI5 sends Kathy Austin to Namibia. There, along with her new partner — a grumpy, mi-sogynistic, racist old warhorse, Kathy begins an investigation where the threat of Nazi re-surgence soon makes way before more fright-ening — and unexplainable — phenomena.

“Leo and Rodolphe’s combination of script-ing and art chores continues to work well with Leo’s imagination for weird and won-derful creatures being ever impressive [...]” Jeremy Briggs, Down the Tubes, on Season 1: Kenya

It’s a sad day for the Campton kids: they’ve just discovered Dodzi’s lifeless body at the foot of a building, shot once in the chest. Convinced that whoever killed him must have come from the red zone — the no man’s land marked out by the monkeys’ cairns — Leila and Ivan decide to send an expedition there. But none of the children could possibly imagine what awaits them inside the zone, no more than what will happen back at the camp.

“The Vanishing is such a good beginning, fo-cused, a comic that kids will absolutely love with adventure and intrigue, and 5 great characters to get behind. This first volume sets the tone firmly — smart drama with the potential to go in a variety of directions [...]” Zainab Akhtar, Comics & Cola

Galaxity’s orders are rather bizarre, lately. Laureline has been left on stand-by in a Scottish castle. Valerian, haunted by recurrent nightmares, has been sent to capture a sentient being as if it were a wild animal — an unsavoury task, to say the least. And on Earth in the 1980s, members of the military and political elites are descending into madness one by one. What future does our planet still have ... and who’s so bent on changing it?

Created by Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin, this series won the prestigious Grand Prix of the Angoulême Festival in 1984.

Transferred to a new penitentiary, the Dal-tons are put in a cell with Fennimore But-tercup, a counterfeiter who soon begins to regret having such noisy cellmates. To get rid of the annoying brothers, he sends them on the trail of his — made-up — stash: $100,000 buried at the foot of a boulder in Red Rock Junction. One prison escape later, pursued by Lucky Luke, they discover to their horror that the spot they seek ... is inside another penitentiary!

Lament of the Lost Moors Backlist page 271. Siobhán2. Blackmore3. Lady Gerfaut

The Gerfauts’ schemes have born fruit. Siobhán drank the blood of Brigga the Witch, and evil has taken hold of her. Once a wise and generous ruler, she has become merciless, and is entirely devoted to Lady Gerfaut’s son, whom she soon marries. Her own mother, Lady O’Mara, isn’t invited to the wedding, and Séamus, her protector, is powerless to help. The last glimmer of hope lies with Kyle of Klanach and his unwavering love and loyalty...

Professor Sató, who has made incredible advances in the field of cybernetics, has been kidnapped by Olrik. A cautious man, Sató had revealed to Professor Mortimer the hiding place of the three formulae that govern his discoveries, and asked him to protect them if need be. Unfortunately, Mortimer is eventually captured as well, and Olrik makes a robotic copy of him to retrieve the formulae. Now, though, Captain Blake is coming to Japan, hell bent on finding his old friend…

“[...] I heartily recommend it. There is an utterly charming officious Britishness in this Franco-Belgian comic book with carefully drawn and thought-out characters and situations. It is a bit like a more polite version of an Indiana Jones adventure, which in itself of course drew from the same source materials.” J.T. Lindroos, Bookgasm

One night, on an isolated moor, Yoko, Vic and Pol are eagerly waiting for their friend Khany. When she arrives, she whisks them away on a shuttle and takes them not to one of the Vin-eans’ underground facilities, but to a station near Saturn. And that’s only the first leg of their journey! They’re soon invited to travel much, much further: the Vineans have decided to return to their planet, to see if it survived the cataclysm that drove them into exile.

“A Japanese girl genius, science whiz and kick-ass hero, Yoko Tsuno feels like an amazingly contemporary, fresh and brilliant comic creation. [...] It’s still jaw-dropping to think that these comics are nearly as old as me but are still amazingly vibrant.” ‘Daddy’, from Read it Daddy!

Yoko is off on an intergalactic journey this time!

The agents of the organisation that was hunting for XIII have finally captured him, along with his friends, but he’s still refusing his captors’ job offer. Forced to give in after they commit an appalling act just to coerce him, he’s discreetly brought back to the USA, where he finally learns what they’re really after. Meanwhile, Betty Barnowsky continues her own investigation under the FBI’s very noses. For both of them, the road leads, once again, to Green Falls...

“The bottom line: if you are looking for something a bit harder than the traditional cape-clad comics; something fun, filled with fast action and with impressive writing chops — XIII is your gateway drug to a new world of graphic fiction.” Paul Wiseall, Pornokitsch

XIII returns to his childhood home once more — but the stakes have never been so high.

Perhaps I should have warned you.

The head of Galaxity’s Spatio-Temporal Service himself has joined Valerian and Laureline at Inverloch Castle. There, among various human and alien allies, he explains to them the threat that looms over Earth: all of the recent incidents, all those important people gone mad and threatening to bring about the apocalypse... All of that is due to the malicious influence of the mysterious planet Hypsis. But Hypsis is a world that moves from system to system — it’ll need to be pinpointed first...

“It’s all completely alien but designed with such tremendous care nothing looks pointless or flimsy. Combined with the rock solid narrative of the script, it creates a book that looks and reads like nothing else and manages to balance satire, physical comedy and action with total ease. An assured entry in a justifiably legendary series.” TravellingMan

Action and metaphysics — this is going to be a rough mis-sion for Valerian.

One of the main problems facing the Old West’s inhabitants was the lack of women in frontier territories. Entire towns were populated only by men, while many unmarried young women languished on the east coast. To remedy that situation, marriages were arranged over mail. And now we find a reluctant Lucky Luke in charge of protecting a convoy of brides on their way west. Could he, too, be in danger of finding a wife?

“It does exactly what the very best child friendly books do; provide a charming and funny slapstick adventure for younger readers while giving a little bit of some-thing for adults to have a knowing chuckle at..” James, MOMBsite

Is the lonesome cowboy really going to tie the knot?
