In 1845 Sir John Franklin's expedition left England, searching for a northwest passage, and vanished intothe Arctic forever. Three years later H.M.S. Plover's was the first departure of twenty-one expeditions searchingfor Franklin. Although most of the analyses of the Franklin Search have focused on the large expeditions in theeastern Arctic, the smaller western expeditions also produced significant geographical and ethnographicalinformation. The Plover's voyage of 1848 to 1854 was the first constant presence of Europeans in the westernArctic, and Rochfort Maguire's journal is the earliest account of a sustained foreign association with the Eskimosof northern Alaska. Maguire's journal is far more than an important historical document; it is a fascinatingaccount of Europeans and Eskimos learning to cope with one another.

Not in Sabin, AB. - No standard references. Elisha Kane(1820–57) was a famous US Arctic explorer who fell in love withthe well-known New York spiritualist Margaret Fox (1836–93).When their secret engagement was revealed, it caused muchcontroversy and Fox was later accused of fabricating theirsubsequent marriage. She wanted to publish their correspondencein 1862 to clear her name, but Kane's family - who disapproved ofFox and did not believe the couple ever married - halted thebook's publication and they reached a settlement. When theyfailed to make agreed payments to Fox, she decided to publish theletters in 1866. The subsequent volume charts the couple'scourtship from its beginnings in 1852 until Kane's death, andreveals the ups and downs of their tumultuous relationship, especially Kane's desire for Fox to stop her spiritualist practices. Itpresents an intimate account of the romance between twoprominent nineteenth-century public figures.

The history of the Society was closely allied for many of its earlier years with‘colonial' exploration in Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the polar regions (LordEllesmere, Beechey, Back, Osborne, McClintock, McClure etc), and central Asiaespecially. It has been a key associate and supporter of many notable explorers andexpeditions, including those of Darwin, Livingstone, Stanley, Scott, Shackleton, Hunt andHillary. From the middle of the 19th century until the end of World War I, expeditionssponsored by the Royal Geographical Society were frequently front page news, and theopinions of its President and Council would be avidly sought by journalists and editors.Appendices include officers, members of council, list of explorers and geographers, papers and publications, maps, authors, etc. Contains: "List of Papers", & "List of Mapsand Other Illus-trations contained in the Journals and Proceedings of the RoyalGeographical Society". He waslargely encouraged in the latter regard through his correspondence with Joseph Banks. This work is anaccount of his 1822 voyage, which combined several weeks whaling with the exploration of the ScoresbySound region (on this voyage he named Scoresby Land and Scoresby Sound) and approximately eighthundred miles of the East Greenland coast, searching for Esquimaux settlements and making scientificobservations. He describes ice and weather conditions, optical phenomena, and ruins of Esquimauxdwellings and their burial places. Appended is a list of rock specimens by W.J. Jameson, an annotated listof 45 species of plants by Sir W.H. Hooker, a list of animals, a meteorological table and extracts from thejournals of two other whalers. "He gave a complete picture of its lands and waters, observing everythingwith the meticulous eye of an inspired scientist. And all the while he was harvesting a fortune in blubberand bone". Scoresby about the search for Franklin, partic-ularly about the ice conditions of Ba nBay. It includes a table of dates for ships' passages of the middle ice of Ba n Bay,1616- 1849. It was originally printed in the Morning Herald but because of thesilence from the Franklin expedition and the general clamor for search parties, thepublisher decided to issue it as a book. Lady Franklin was untiring in her search todiscover news of the fate of her husband. When she felt the admiralty was laggingin their efforts, she sponsored Captain McClintock's expedition in 1857 and it was hewho was the first to discover the remains of the Franklin expedition.

A rare Franklin search item. Parts of Scoresby's essay were originally publishedin the Morning Herald in December 1849. Popular interest in Franklin's fate madepossible this separate, expanded publication
