Catechism Class!Pastor Vik1Gods RepresentativesBig Question: Why does God want those in authority to discipline us when we disobey them?

2Gods RepresentativesWhen are we guilty of sinning against those in authority over us?1 Samuel 2:22-25 22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 23 So he said to them, Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear spreading among the Lords people. 25 If a man sins against another man, God may mediate for him; but if a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him? His sons, however, did not listen to their fathers rebuke, for it was the Lords will to put them to death.

3Gods RepresentativesWhen are we guilty of sinning against those in authority over us?2 Kings 2:23, 24 23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. Go on up, you baldhead! they said. Go on up, you baldhead! 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.

4Gods RepresentativesWhen are we guilty of sinning against those in authority over us?Numbers 16:12-15 12 Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, We will not come! 13 Isnt it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the desert? And now you also want to lord it over us? 14 Moreover, you havent brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not come! 15 Then Moses became very angry and said to the Lord, Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them. 5Gods RepresentativesWhen are we guilty of sinning against those in authority over us?

We sin against those whom God places over us when we disobey them, dishonor them, or anger them.6Gods RepresentativesWhat does God want his representatives to do when we sin?1 Samuel 3:13 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons made themselves contemptible, and he failed to restrain them.Proverbs 13:24 24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. 2 Timothy 4:2 2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encouragewith great patience and careful instruction. God wants his representatives to stop us from sinning, using punishment when necessary combined with patient and careful instruction.

7Gods RepresentativesHow can loving discipline serve as a blessing for us?Proverbs 23:13, 14 13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. 14 Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.

8Gods RepresentativesHow can loving discipline serve as a blessing for us?Hebrews 10:26-31 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, It is mine to avenge; I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge his people. 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.9Gods RepresentativesHow can loving discipline serve as a blessing for us?

Discipline can serve as a blessing for us by keeping our souls from falling under Gods punishment in hell.10Gods RepresentativesWhen only does God want us not to obey those whom he places over us?Acts 5:29 29 Peter and the other apostles replied: We must obey God rather than men!

God does not want us to obey those whom he has placed over us when they ask us to do something contrary to his word.

11Gods RepresentativesBig Question answered: Why does God want those in authority to discipline us when we disobey them?

God wants those whom he places over me to discipline me so I stop sinning and so my soul wont be lost in hell.

12The Fifth CommandmentBig Question: What does God teach us about his wonderful gift of life?

13The Fifth CommandmentWhy is the gift of life very important?Genesis 2:7 the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.2 Corinthians 6:1,2 As Gods fellow workers we urge you not to receive Gods grace in vain. 2 For he says, In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, now is the time of Gods favor, now is the day of salvation.Hebrews 9:27 27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment

The gift of life is important because God gives it to me as a time of grace.14The Fifth CommandmentWho alone has the right to determine when Gods gift of life should end? Deuteronomy 32:39 See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand. Psalm 90:3 You turn men back to dust, saying, Return to dust, O sons of men. Romans 13:4 4 For government is Gods servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is Gods servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 15The Fifth CommandmentWho alone has the right to determine when Gods gift of life should end?Genesis 9:5, 6 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. 6 Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.

No one has the right to take a life except God and his representatives in the government.

16The Fifth CommandmentHow do we sin against Gods precious gift of life?Proverbs 23:20a, 31-33 Do not join those who drink too much wine, Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. 31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! Matthew 27:5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. Exodus 21:29 If, however, the bull has had the habit of goring and the owner has been warned but has not kept it penned up and it kills a man or woman, the bull must be stoned and the owner also must be put to death.

17The Fifth CommandmentGenesis 4:2-15 2 The woman said to the serpent, We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die. 4 You will not surely die, the serpent said to the woman. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, Where are you? 10 He answered, I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid. 11 And he said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?

1812 The man said, The woman you put here with meshe gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it. 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, What is this you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate. 14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspringa and hers; he will crushb your head, and you will strike his heel.

192 Samuel 11:2-172 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, Isnt this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite? 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Thena she went back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, I am pregnant. 6 So David sent this word to Joab: Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent him to David. 7 When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the soldiers were and how the war was going. 8 Then David said to Uriah, Go down to your house and wash your feet. So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king was sent after him. 9 But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all his masters servants and did not go down to his house. 10 When David was told, Uriah did not go home, he asked him, Havent you just come from a distance? Why didnt you go home?

2011 Uriah said to David, The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents, and my master Joab and my lords men are camped in the open fields. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and lie with my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing! 12 Then David said to him, Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will send you back. So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 At Davids invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his masters servants; he did not go home. 14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. 15 In it he wrote, Put Uriah in the front line where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die. 16 So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in Davids army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.

21The Fifth CommandmentHow do we sin against Gods precious gift of life?Exodus 21:18-19, 26-27 18 If men quarrel and one hits the other with a stone or with his fist and he does not die but is confined to bed, 19 the one who struck the blow will not be held responsible if the other gets up and walks around outside with his staff; however, he must pay the injured man for the loss of his time and see that he is completely healed.1 John 3:15 15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.

We sin against Gods gift of life by hating or harming a person or by causing his or her death in any way.22The Fifth CommandmentHow does God want us to honor his precious gift of life?1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 4 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. Ephesians 4:31-32 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

23The Fifth CommandmentHow does God want us to honor his precious gift of life?Luke 10:33-35 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. Look after him, he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have. Matthew 25:35,36 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
