about the staffpage 10

We work hard here to give everything we can to these children we call “Happy Caterpillars.” Through their natural play habits, we can learn from each child. Here, we have one goal; we simply want kids to be happy kids.

With increasing diagnosises of ADHD and Bipolar disorder, a mission has been made by the therapists and psychologists who want to protect children from pharmeceutical abuse. The Caterpillar House is a safe place, a home for these children away from home. It is a treatment center in which parents can feel comfortable about where and who they leave their children with. When you see your little caterpillar again, you can be sure to see qualitative differences within just a few short weeks. Of course we are believers in certain medications, and when it does become necessary to intervene medically, there is always open discussion and many professionals to make a decision with. We are here for YOUR child, and we are here for you.

As the FDA has relinquished stigmas about medicating young children, this daycare seeks to absolve stereotypes about therapy; we want to inform and work with children with therapy to rule out all manageable traits before pursuing medication.

Here at the Caterpillar House transformative therapy day care, therapists and psychologists are staffed to be constantly addressing the needs of each induvidual child here. We believe that medica-tion and quick diagnoses of ADHD and bipolar are the wrong solution, and often lead to life long detrematic effects.

Almost everyone benefits. The schools get more state funding for the education of a “mentally handicapped” student. Teach-ers have more subdued students in their already overcrowded classrooms. Finally, parents are not forced to examine their own practices at home to see what they can contribute for change.

Many children exhibit signs of hostility, rage, and a frighten-ing affinity for violence. When these subjects are talked about, increasingly positive results are shown for having children express themselves openly and not be judged for what is on their minds.

We work hard here to give everything we can to these children we call Happy Caterpillars. Many of these children just need time to feel comfortable and understand we are people for the sole pur-pose to understand what is going on in their minds and bodies.

Through their natural play habits, we can learn from each child and create individual plans for each creative mind to grow natu-rally and healthily with as little medical intervention as possible.

How you can help your childThe only loser in this equation is the child. It is the child who must endure the side effects fo these powerful drugs and be burdened unneccessarily with the label of a mental illness. Medicating a child based on a misdiagnosis is a tragic injustice for the child. His or her only advocate is the parent, who lacked the courage to apply appropriate actions.

At Caterpillar Kids, we do not discount the positive effects that have been found in some children using these strong medications. With the proper therepeutic tools, this therapy child center can facilitate proper coping skills to anxiety and stress, and can also be a wonderful additive for those children that cannot be without their medication.

As the FDA has relinquished stigmas about medicating young children, this daycare seeks to absolve stereotypes about therapy; we want to inform and work with children through therapy to rule out all possible manageable personality traits before pursuing medication.

First Day RitualEvery year on the first day of opening, we have parents bring their chil-dren to the playground space to hole hands in a large circle. This ritual is for children to see how many others are here for reasons just like their own. They are not alone, they are not different, and they will be helped.

Understanding Child PerceptionPlay Therapy is a form of counseling or psychotherapy that uses play to communicate with and help people, especially children, to prevent or resolve psychosocial challenges. This is thought to help them achieve better social integration, growth and development.

Learning and TransformingAccording to the psychodynamic view, people (especially children) will engage in play behavior in order to work through their interior. Along with children interacting with other children, the therapist will have the child play with certain toys in order to determine his concentration and source of any stress. Each toy and each style of enjoying them represents play therapy.

It is believed that as people interact with others, they may work through their internal anxieties. In this idea, children should be encouraged to play, in order to develop as a healthy child and learn the proper coping and grief processesing skills.

The CurriculumBecause of its dual origins in art and psychotherapy, art therapy definitions vary. They commonly either lean more toward the art-making process as therapeutic in and of itself, “art as therapy,” or focus on the psychotherapeutic transference process between the therapist and the client who makes art. The therapist interprets the client’s symbolic self-expression, as communicated in the art, and elicits interpretations from the client.

The American Art Therapy Association describes it this way, “(a)rt therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a profes-sional relationship, by people who experience illness, trauma or challenges in living, and by people who seek personal develop-ment. Through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self and others cope with symptoms, stress and traumatic experiences; enhance cogni-tive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.

Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, men-tal and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviour, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight. The curriculum that changes lives

music therapy with dr. tracyMusic therapists are found in nearly every area of the helping profes-sions. Some commonly found practices include developmental work (communication, motor skills, etc.) with individuals with special needs, songwriting and listening in reminiscence/orientation work with the elderly, processing and relaxation.

Play TherapyPlay therapy is generally employed with children aged 3 through 11 and provides a way for them to express their experi-ences and feelings through a natural, self-guided, self-healing pro-cess. As children’s experiences and knowledge are often commu-nicated through play, it becomes an important vehicle for them to know and accept themselves and others. Play Therapy is a form of counseling or psychotherapy that uses play to communicate with and help people, especially children, to prevent or resolve

prevent or resolve psychosocial challenges. This is thought to help them towards better social integration, growth and development.

Play Therapy can also be used as a tool of diagnosis. A play therapist observes a client playing with toys (play-houses, pets, dolls, etc.) to determine the cause of the disturbed behavior. The objects and patterns of play, as well as the willingness to interact with the therapist, can be used to understand the underlying rationale for behavior both inside and outside the session..

WHY WEENCOURAGEPLAY

The Facts about PharmeceuticalsSix million American children (one in every ten children) is pre-scribed a psychiatric drug that has never been tested on children, but only on adults. The truth about drugs is that those called Anti-anxiety drugs are truly tanquilizers and benzodiazepines. These drugs work by reducing brain activity. The truth is, there are other ways to help our children calm and grow.

The most commonly prescribed anti-anxiety drugs are xanax, Klonopin, Valium which is diazepam, and Ativan, medically called lorazepam. These work by reducing brain activity. The common side effects of these drugs include drowsiness, slowed reflexes, slurred speech, confusion, and depression. The irony is the paradoxical effects that these side effects.

Paradoxical EffectsThese anti-anxiety meds can cause mania, hostility, rage, ag-gressive and impulsive behavior, even in extreme cases there have been reports of hallucinations. After these symptoms occur, children need more medications to outweigh the side effects from previous medications, which add even more symptoms and side effects. New cocktails are prescribed everyday that have never been tested before, leading to unintentional overdoses and even unpredictabe deaths in children.

The many chemical reactions result in long lasting twitches and odd habits. This further ostricizes the child from society, causing further depression, and in turn, more prescriptions and higher doses. The difference between the presciptions given by doctors and the evalutaions given here at Caterpillar Kids, is the holistic care that each child receives individually, after thorough evalua-tion and play therapy.

Children need a psychiatrist that can solve what is causing the problem rather than just addressing the actual symptoms that are holding the children back.
