Coming to St Simon’s in July Spiritual Gifts Inventory

Have you ever wondered about your spiritual gifts? Do you even know what they are? Do you know if you are using them? Discover your charisms and how to bring your gifts in service to others and the church. This is a two session program on Thursday July 6 and July 13 beginning at 7pm in the lower church hall.

To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. 1 Cor:7.

This is a wonderful and timely topic as we have just recently celebrated Pentecost, the sending of the Spirit and the empowerment of Jesus’s followers. The presenter is Jane Guenther, M.Div.

To register contact Deacon Dave Camden 842 3848 ext. 120.

St. Simon,

Many have been asking me, “Fr. Purcell, are you growing a beard for your new parish?” While the reappearance of my facial hair is coinciding with Archbishop’s new assignment for me, that’s not the reason. The real cause: I’m going to be acting as the character “Motel” in The Fiddler on the Roof this summer, which will also feature 5 other priests and about 100 other people. The Fr. Scheid Players have been performing for 38 years now to raise money for the Catholic Youth Apostolate of the Archdiocese, and we’re continuing the tradition this summer. It shows July 21 and 22 at 7pm and July 23 at 2pm at Incarnate Word Academy’s Theater. I would love to see you there. God bless, Fr. Purcell

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ The unifying motif of this year's readings for today is God's gift of living, life-giving Bread. Prefigured in the manna, which not only nourished individuals but defined Israel as a community under God's special care, Jesus, the living bread, bestows on us--individually and as a community--eternal life that, in John's

perspective, begins here and is fulfilled hereafter. This "already/not yet" theme is alluded to by the Communion invitation's reference to Revelation's vision of the kingdom-feast: "Happy are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb" (Revelation 19:9) once slain who lives forever. For Saint Paul, the eucharistic bread and cup are both sign of what the community is called to be and source of the community's strength to live that ideal.

FLESH AND BLOOD Today's Gospel verses, John 6:51-58 are a "eucharistic version" of the previous verses, 6:35-50, in which Jesus asserts, "Whoever believes has eternal life" (6:47). Now Jesus replaces "believes" with "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life" (6:54). This parallelism is mirrored in the complementarity of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the intimate relationship between ambo (lectern) and altar, "the table of God's Word and the table of Christ's Body." But today's Gospel presents a further parallel, the complementarity of flesh and blood. By using "flesh," a word he sometimes uses to denote the whole of human nature rather than "body," John seems to suggest that, in receiving Christ's Body in the Eucharist, we disciples are to assimilate the whole of Jesus' humanity, his own radically self-sacrificing-unto-death lifestyle as our distinctive manner of being human. Moreover, the very reason the law forbade partaking of sacrificial blood is precisely why Jesus says we must drink his blood, "for the blood is life" (Deuteronomy 12:23). By partaking of Christ's Blood in the Eucharist, we "have eternal life" here and now; that is to say, we live by Christ's victory over death in this life, a victory that will be made permanent when Jesus raises us up on the last day (6:54).

WE ARE ONE As we partake of this gift, we become one with Christ in reality. But there is more. We also become one with each other. As we all partake of the mystery, we are united in flesh and spirit--in the Holy Spirit--with each other as well. As Paul says, "Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf" (1 Corinthians 10:17). Today we celebrate this wonderful gift. Even though we do not fully understand it, we believe and accept it with joy. We are one with Christ and one with each other. We too become the Body of Christ in the world. Copyright (c) J. S. As previously announced, after almost 4 years of service to the parishioners of St. Simon the Apostle, Father Purcell will be moving on to his new assignment at Immaculate Conception in Dardenne Prairie. We were certainly blessed to have him here at St. Simon and we wish him well as he embarks on a new path. A reception in Fr. Purcell's honor will be held after the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, June 24, in the lower church hall. Refreshments will also be served after all Masses on Sunday, June 25. Please be sure and stop by for a treat, some fellowship and to wish a fond farewell to Fr. Purcell after all of the Masses next weekend.

Parish Stewardship of Treasure :

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)- The Blessed Sacrament The Solemnity of Corpus Christi is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast began with St. Juliana, a young Belgian nun in the thirteenth century, who received in prayer an inspiration for a feast that would celebrate and promote the gift of the Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. This feast would eventually spread throughout the province, continent, and world. Corpus Christ and its accompanying procession with the Blessed Sacrament, celebrating the sacrament and signifying God’s presence in our world and in our lives and reminding us of our common pilgrimage to Heaven, is a prayerful and edifying act of the entire Church. As a general rule, devotions are not mentioned in the Code of Canon Law. However, because of the importance of this devotion in the life of the Church, canon 944 mentions it: “When it can be done in the judgment of the diocesan bishop, as a public witness of the veneration toward the Most Holy Eucharist, a procession is to be conducted through the public streets, especially on the solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.” On this feast we can express our gratitude for the opportunity to receive our Lord every Sunday in the Eucharist, to adore Him in prayer, and to show Him to the rest of the world in the streets of our archdiocese. archstl.org/dynamic

June 18, 2017 - Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” 1 CORINTHIANS 10:17 As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives and invite others to join us. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts, serves a twofold purpose. One, it helps build God’s kingdom here on earth. Two, it is a road map to Heaven. Let’s help each other get there!
