Affective Prayer
A while ago I attended a six-day retreat given by Robert Michel, an
Oblate colleague and a highly sought-after spiritual mentor. His
approach was disarming. Most of us are forever looking for
something novel, at the cutting-edge, outside the box, something
complex, but what he offered was stunningly simple and down-to-
earth. He spent the whole time trying to teach us how to pray in an
affective way.
What exactly does that mean, to pray affectively? In essence, what
he told us might be summarized this way: “You must try to pray so
that, in your prayer, you open yourself in such a way that
sometime—perhaps not today, but sometime—you are able to hear
God say to you: ‘I love you!’ These words, addressed to you by God,
are the most important words you will ever hear because, before you
hear them, nothing is ever completely right with you, but, after you
hear them, something will be right in your life at a very deep level.”
These are simple words, but they capture what we ultimately try to
do when we “lift mind and heart to God” in prayer.
In the end, prayer’s essence, its mission-statement, its deep raison
d’etre, is simply this: we need to open ourselves to God in such a
way that we are capable of hearing God say to us, individually, “I
love you!”
This might sound pious and
sentimental. It’s anything but that.
Don’t be put off by simplicity. The
deeper something is the simpler it will
be. That’s why we have trouble
understanding the deep things, be they
of science or the heart. What separates
the great minds (Augustine, Aquinas,
Descartes, Whitehead, Einstein,
Lonergan) from the rest of us is their
capacity to grasp the simple.
Oración Afectiva
Hace tiempo asistí a un retiro de seis días ofrecido por
Robert Michel, un colega oblato y un mentor espiritual
muy buscado. Su enfoque fue desarmante. La mayoría
de nosotros siempre buscamos algo novedoso, atrevido,
fuera de lo común, algo complejo, pero lo que él ofreció
fue increíblemente simple y con los pies en la tierra.
Pasó todo el tiempo tratando de enseñarnos a orar de una
manera afectiva.
¿Qué significa exactamente eso, para orar
afectivamente? En teoría, lo que nos contó se puede
resumir de esta manera: "Debes de tratar de orar para
que, en tu oración, te abras de tal manera que en algún
momento -quizás no hoy, pero en algún momento-
puedas escuchar a Dios decirte: "¡Te amo!" Estas
palabras, dirigidas a ti por Dios, son las palabras más
importantes que algún día puedas escuchar porque, sin
escucharlas, nada podrá estar bien contigo,
completamente, pero, después de escucharlas, algo en tu
vida estará en un nivel más profundo"
Estas son palabras sencillas, pero captan lo que
finalmente tratamos de hacer cuando "elevamos la mente
y el corazón a Dios" en oración.
Al final, la esencia de la oración, su declaración de
misión, su profunda razón de ser, es simplemente esto:
tenemos que abrirnos a Dios de tal manera que podamos
escuchar a Dios decirnos, individualmente: "Te Amo!"
Esto puede sonar piadoso y sentimental. Es todo menos
eso. No se deje intimidar por la simplicidad. Cuanto más
profundo sea algo, más simple será. Es por eso que
tenemos problemas para entender las cosas profundas,
ya sean de la ciencia o del corazón. Lo que separa a las
grandes mentes a (Agustín, Aquino, Descartes,
Whitehead, Einstein, Lonergan) del resto de nosotros es
su capacidad de captar lo simple.

Cualquiera puede entender lo que es complejo, pero tenemos
problemas para captar el principio de la relatividad, el
concepto de ser, el concepto de amor y cosas sobre la
naturaleza de Dios, exactamente por la razón opuesta. Son
muy sencillas. Cuanto más simple es algo, más difícil es
envolver nuestra mente en ello y más necesitamos hacerlo
complejo para poder entenderlo. Eso es cierto también de la
oración. Es tan simple que rara vez revelamos su esencia.
Parece, que siempre a sido así.
El evangelio de Juan ya lo dijo. El Evangelio de Juan, como
sabemos, se estructura de manera muy diferente a los otros
evangelios. Juan no tiene narraciones de la infancia o vida
temprana de Jesús. En su evangelio, nos encontramos con
Jesús como un adulto en la primera página y las primeras
palabras que salen de la boca de Jesús son una pregunta:
"¿Qué estás buscando?" Esa pregunta permanece en el resto
del evangelio como una sugerencia de un color que señala que
debajo de todo hay una cierta búsqueda. Muchas cosas están
sucediendo en la superficie, pero por debajo, siempre queda la
inquietante pregunta: "¿Qué estás buscando?"
Jesús contesta esa pregunta explícitamente solo al final del
evangelio, en la mañana de la resurrección. María Magdalena
lo busca, llevando especies para embalsamar su cadáver. Jesús
se encuentra con ella, vivo y sin necesidad de
embalsamamiento, pero ella no lo reconoce. Desconcertada,
pero sincera, le pregunta a Jesús dónde podría encontrar a
Jesús (algo, que pienso que nosotros hacemos con mucha
frecuencia en la oración). Jesús, por su parte, repite para ella la
pregunta con la que abrió el Evangelio: "¿Qué estás
buscando?" Luego él responde. Con profundo afecto,
pronuncia su nombre: "María".
Al hacer eso, él le dice a ella lo que ella y todos los demás
andan buscan siempre, la voz de Dios, uno-a-uno, hablando un
amor incondicional, diciendo su nombre suavemente. Al final,
eso es lo que todos buscamos y más necesitamos. Es lo que
nos da sustancia, identidad y justificación más allá de nuestros
propios esfuerzos para hacernos amorosos, dignos e
inmortales. Siempre tememos nuestra aparente
insustancialidad. ¿Cómo darnos importancia? Necesitamos
escuchar a Dios, cariñosamente, uno-a-uno, pronunciando
nuestros nombres: "¡Carolyn!" "¡Julia!" "¡Kern!" "¡Gisele!"
"¡Steve!" "¡Sophia!" Nada nos sanará más de la inquietud,
amargura e inseguridad que escuchar a Dios decir: "¡Te amo!"
Además, dado que la oración debe ser mutua, también es
importante que respondamos de la misma manera: parte de la
oración afectiva es también que nosotros, uno-a-uno, con
afecto, ocasionalmente al menos, le digamos lo mismo a Dios:
" ¡Te amo! "En todas las relaciones afectuosas a largo plazo,
los socios tienen que animarse ocasionalmente unos a otros a
escuchar expresiones de afecto y consuelo. No es suficiente
decirle a un compañero de matrimonio o a un amigo "Te amo"
una sola vez. Tiene que decirse con regularidad. La relación de
la oración no es diferente.
La oración, se dice, no está destinada a cambiar a Dios, sino a
nosotros. Cierto. Y nada nos cambia tanto como para escuchar
a alguien decir que nos ama, especialmente si ese alguien es

Anyone can understand what’s complex, but we have trouble
grasping the principle of relativity, the concept of being, the
concept of love, and things about the nature of the God, for
exactly the opposite reason. They’re too simple. The simpler
something is, the harder it is to wrap our minds around it and
the more we need to make it complex in order to understand it.
That’s true too of prayer. It’s so simple that we rarely lay bare
its essence. It has ever been thus, it would seem.
John’s gospel already makes that point. The Gospel of John, as
we know, structures itself very differently from the other
gospels. John has no infancy narratives or early life of Jesus. In
his gospel, we meet Jesus as an adult right on the first page and
the first words out of Jesus’ mouth are a question: “What are
you looking for?” That question remains throughout the rest of
the gospel as an interpretive coloring suggesting that beneath
everything else a certain search is going on. A lot of things are
happening on the surface, but underneath, there remains always
the nagging, restless question: “What are you looking for?”
Jesus answers that question explicitly only at the end of the
gospel, on the morning of the resurrection. Mary Magdalene
goes looking for him, carrying spices with which to embalm
his dead body. Jesus meets her, alive and in no need of
embalming, but she doesn’t recognize him. Bewildered, but
sincere, she asks Jesus where she might find Jesus (something,
I suspect, we do often enough in prayer). Jesus, for his part,
repeats for her the question he opened the gospel with: “What
are you looking for?” Then he answers it. With deep affection,
he pronounces her name: “Mary.”
In doing that, he tells her what she and everyone else are
forever looking for, God’s voice, one-to-one, speaking
unconditional love, gently saying your name. In the end, that’s
what we are all looking for and most need. It’s what gives us
substance, identity, and justification beyond our own efforts to
make ourselves lovable, worthwhile, and immortal. We are
forever in fear of our own seeming insubstantiality. How to
give ourselves significance? We need to hear God,
affectionately, one-to-one, pronounce our names: “Carolyn!”
“Julia!” “Kern!” “Gisele!” “Steve!” “Sophia!” Nothing will
heal us more of restlessness, bitterness, and insecurity than to
hear God say: “I love you!”
Moreover since prayer is meant to be a mutual thing, it’s
important too that we respond in kind: Part of affective prayer
is also that we, one-to-one, with affection, occasionally at least,
say the same thing to God: “I love you!” In all long-term,
affectionate relationships the partners have to occasionally
prompt each other to hear expressions of affection and
reassurance. It’s not good enough to tell a marriage partner or a
friend just once “I love you!” It needs to be said regularly. The
relationship of prayer is no different.
Prayer, it is said, is not meant to change God but us. True. And
nothing changes us as much for the good as to hear someone
say that he or she loves us—especially if that someone is God.

FaithAction ID Card Update
Please Note: The FaithAction ID Card program is a means
of providing a picture ID Card to anyone who may need
one for their personal use. It is not limited to any specific
group of persons.
The FaithAction ID Card program schedule here at Blessed
Sacrament Church for the next several months is as follows:
Friday Morning—September 14—Doors open @ 9:00 AM
No one is admitted once the orientation session begins. So
please plan accordingly.
Requirements for the Faith ID Card:
1) Participation in the FaithAction ID Orientation;
2) Proof of Identification (original documents not copies: i.e.,
national ID card, passport, school ID, expired driver’s
license, library card with photo, work permit with photo,
border cross card, birth certificate along with a photo ID
from this list, etc…)
3) Proof of current address within 2 months (i.e. phone or
electricity bill, lease agreement, bank statement, etc…)
The FaithAction ID Card will cost $10 (cash or check only)
and will include your photo, full name, and address, date of
birth, country of origin, and expiration date, along with the
FaithAction Logo.

La Tarjeta de Identificación FaithAction costará $10 (efectivo

Cristian Dunston is a parishioner at
Blessed Sacrament, but as you may
know, he's also a Boy Scout. His
Eagle Scout Project consists of
constructing a sensory pathway for
babies from 6 months to 2 years old
at LifeSpan Circle School. LifeSpan
is a school for children with
developmental delays and typically
developing children, from 6 weeks
of age until they start kindergarten.
Cristian needs to raise $2,500
to begin purchasing the materials
needed for his project before the
middle of September. If you want to help support this project, please make
a contribution to Blessed Sacrament Church. The parish will send your
support to Cristian. Check should be made to Blessed Sacrament Church,
please write “Cristian Dunston - Troop 39” in the memo line. If you have
