From Deacon Bill Warmouth My brothers and sisters, Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. In 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized St. Faustina Kowalska and during the ceremony, he declared: “It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church will be called "Divine Mercy Sunday". The following is an interesting story of the power of the Divine Mercy Chaplet. It was taken from the Fairbanks Daily Newsminer (Dec 29, 2017): “Next is a remarkable story that was recently reported in the winter 2017-18 Marian Helper Magazine. In April, 2005, Carole Denkinger of Sitka, was struck with a sudden and severe respiratory illness. She was admitted to the ICU because she could barely talk or breathe. Carole, afraid that she wasn’t going to make it, pleaded with Jesus for mercy and to not take her. She prayed over and over, “Jesus, I trust in you.” Carole then thought of her prayer partner, Barbara Rocheleau. She called for Barbara to come to the ICU to pray with her. As soon as Barbara arrived, she placed the image of Jesus of the Divine Mercy on a ledge. She dimmed the lights that were hurting Carole’s eyes, and they began praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet. After she began praying, Barbara suddenly saw a three-dimensional image appear on the wall she was facing. In the image, Barbara saw Carole’s mother standing in a field. Carole’s mother was praying the Chaplet with them. Then Barbara saw generations of Carole’s ancestors lined up, all praying with the women. Barbara couldn’t hear the ancestors praying, but she could see them. Then a most amazing thing happened, according to Barbara. Carole’s mother and ancestors faded away, but a bright light appeared. Through this light, a young, vibrant John Paul II stepped into the room. It so happened that John Paul’s funeral had been 12 days before this. He strode in, stepped in front of Carole, laid his hands upon Carole’s head and prayed for her. Then the pope knelt in front of Carole’s bed and prayed. Then he stood up, smiled at Barbara, and stepped back into the light. Dumbfounded, Barbara began to cry. After a while, Barbara regained her composure and finished praying the chaplet. After she was finished praying, she tremulously relayed what she had seen to Carole. Carole was astonished, as her eyes had been closed the entire time and she had missed the miracle. But she began improving almost immediately and was able to be released from the hospital two days later. Carole felt very blessed to have been the recipient of Jesus’ power and mercy.” In times of stress or trouble we should always remember that God’s Divine Mercy is always available to those who seek it.
