Catholics in America Page 1 Catholics in America Copyright 2016, NCHE Source 1 Who Had Religious Freedom in the Founding Era? Part 1: Colonization and Catholicism In America’s “Creation Story,” the Pilgrims came to the new world for religious freedom. Others followed or spread out from the original settlement and established more colonies where colonists could freely practice their religions. Eventually thirteen colonies revolted against paying taxes levied by a Parliament in which they had no representatives. After declaring and winning their independence, they formed a government based on a Constitution that requires no religious test for holding office and added a Bill of Rights that guarantees religious freedom. All of the statements above are true, but as in most short stories, so much is left out that the reader or listener can make a series of incorrect inferences. If we add details to this narrative, specifically about Catholics in America, we get a rather different story. American colonization in what would become the New England States, beginning with the arrival of the Puritans in 1620, was the result of forces unleashed in 1517 in the Protestant Reformation. For more than a century this religious movement involved persecutors, persecuted, and martyrs and an ever- increasing number of religious groups. Some historians entitle this era “The Age of Faith” because religious feelings were so strong that people sacrificed and were sacrificed for their religious beliefs. In this “Age of Faith” there could be no compromising on one’s religious beliefs. To do so compromised your life, your death, and your eternity. The Protestant Reformation was a protest against the Catholic Church. The colonists who came to British North America were Protestants, people whose origins were in this protest. Some of the thirteen colonies were settled by dissenters—people who refused to regard Catholics as a religious people worthy of note. The Catholic Church was viewed as a fraudulent faith. It was labeled “the Whore” because it had prostituted itself by taking money from believers buying salvation. Its members were viewed as not Christians but Papists, because, as the reasoning went, they had substituted loyalty and obedience to the Pope for loyalty and obedience to God. These beliefs were firmly held by the Protestants who settled America. Catholics were not allowed to vote or hold office in most of the original English colonies. The Puritans came for religious freedom for themselves. They established a theocracy run of, by, and for Puritans. They believed that the presence of Catholics, as well as Anglicans and Quakers, would taint the purity of their religion. With the exception of Rhode Island, all the colonies had established churches that were Protestant. In New England the established church was the Puritan, soon to be call the Congregational. In other colonies the established

“Recent Studies by Dr. Gallup report a big backswing of Catholic voters into the Democratic Party in the congressional elections of 1958. The report says that 75 per cent of Catholics voted for Democratic congressional candidates in that year. In twelve states of the industrial East, the Gallup analysis says, the number of Catholic Democrats in 1958 actually was greater than that of Protestant Democrats. A breakdown of the Democratic vote in these states into religious groups showed 48 per cent Catholic, 35 per cent Protestant, 13 per cent Jewish, and 4 per cent other religions. The 12 states were the six in New England plus New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia. These states combined have 153 electoral votes.” !
