Closing Ceremony Instructions

Dear Head of Delegations,

Tomorrow will be official closing ceremonyof the 9th Caribbean Junior MenChampionship. The Ceremony will takeplace immediately after the Finals. Allteams are required to be present for theceremony in proper national team wear.Athletes to receive individual awards mustbe in proper team wear. Tracks or Longpants with sneakers – no shorts, noslippers.

Thomas, Gonzalez fire USVI past Guadeloupe for fifth

Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, July 27, 2013: Aseah Thomas and captain NayibGonzalez tallied a combined 43 points as US Virgin Islands made full use ofhost Guadeloupe’s 48 errors to come away with a 25-21, 20-25, 20-25, 25-21,15-9 win in their fifth place playoff at the Ninth Caribbean Zonal VolleyballAssociation (CAZOVA) Junior Men’s Championship at the Paul ChonchonSports and Cultural Centre.Thomas finished with 23 points, 15 of which were kills, seven aces and oneblock while Thomas had 20 points, all on kills in the match, which lasted fiveminutes short of two hours.The duo of Tahir Williams and Kyu Matthews added five points apiece forUSVI which was overpowered on kills, 43-46, and blocks, 5-7, but held itsown on service aces 9-5.Malick Frederic was the main scorer for Guadeloupe with 22 points, madeup of 16 kills and four aces while Yannis Biodore added 15, 14 of which werekills and Meidhy Tacita, ten, with seven coming off blocks.Sylvain Dolius also got nine and Steeve Burgatha six in the loss forGuadeloupe, which was second to Curacao in the 2011 tournament held inJamaica, and also second six years ago in USVI, behind the now defunctNetherlands Antilles.

A disappointed Willy Corenthin, captain of Guadeloupe, who had no impact on thematch said it was a very good game by both teams, but his team lacked the spirit.“We knew it was going to be a tough battle as no team wanted to finish last, but we justwas not able to get the win.Gonzalez, while delighted with the win said it was a very good match by both teams buthis team played with a lot more heart and passion than they did in previous matchesand deserved the win.Didier Mancel admitted that playing without his regular libero and setter due to injurymade it tough on his team against a very competitive USVI team.Jarel Nicholas also said it was a very competitive match but his team showed a lot ofcharacter and played with a lot of passion.In the two semifinals that followed of Sunday's bronze and gold medal matches, T&Tcame up against Barbados and defending champions Curacao face Bahamas.

Barbados sweeps past T&T into Junior CAZOVA final

Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, July 27, 2013: Jabarry Goodridge registered amatch high 18 points as Barbados swept past T&T 25-19, 25-21, 25-13 in thefirst semifinal at the Ninth Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA)Junior Men’s Championship at the Paul Chonchon Sports and CulturalCentre.Goodridge had 17 kills in his tally while captain Ammuniki Wood and AndriyStapleton got seven points each, and Kimar Hinds, five, for the 1997 and2005 champions who advanced to their first final in eight years with the 76minutes win.T&T, which was hoping to get to its first ever final at this level and enteredthe match as the only team to win its two round-robin matches in thetournament to top Pool B was led by Nicholas Prescott’s 17 points, 15 ofwhich were kills while captain Newton Grant had a quiet night with sixpoints.It was an overall dominant showing by the Pool A third placed finishersBarbados, who led 32-26 on spikes, 6-4 on blocks and 5-2 on service aces,and committed fewer errors as well, 21 to T&T’s 32.Speaking after the loss, Grant said it seemed as though his team was notmentally prepared for the match in addition to having an off day with theirpassing.

“We just did not show up and a very good Barbados team took full advantageof that. Congrats to Barbados and best of luck to them in the final.“We have one more match to play and we will be coming out to get the bronzemedal to show for our efforts,” ended Grant.Wood said his team worked very hard and play a good match to stop a strongT&T team.He added, “We have played up and down in the tournament so far, but tonightwe lifted our game considerably and for the final we will try to keep focus andkeep our level of play up .”David Camacho, T&T coach congratulated Barbados on the win saying that theyshowed up with a game plan and stuck to it.“As I said before the team that makes the least amount of errors will win eachmatch and we made too many on passes to have a chance.He added, “Losing the semifinals is always a disappointed but it’s a somethingwe will have to deal with and come back tomorrow and play as hard as possibleand get something tangible for our efforts in the tournament, which is thebronze.’John Stuart, Barbados coach was quick to point out that playing against T&T hasalways been a tough fight for Barbados due to both countries rivalry and histeam needed to stick to its plan, play with confidence and simple, which theydid.

Vivo, Gabriel power Curacao to Junior CAZOVAfinal

Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, July 27, 2013: Gilbert Vivo ledthree players in double-digit scoring as defending championsCuracao powered past Bahamas (3-1) 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 25-14 in the second semifinal of the Ninth Caribbean ZonalVolleyball Association (CAZOVA) Junior (Under-21) Men’sChampionship at the Paul Chonchon Sports and CulturalCentre.Vivo led all scorers with 20 points, while captain Sharif Gabrieladded 17, laced with 13 kills and three blocks, and DerrickAlexander 14, all on kills in the one hour and 47 minutes duel,as the Dutch-speaking country set up a gold medal match withtwo-time champions Barbados on Sunday night.Jamiro Hazel chipped in with eight points and Jeandray Philipssix for Curacao which showed off its all round solid game whichwas reflected in the final statistics, 49-29 on spikes, 11-8 onblocks and 8-6 on service aces.

The lone weak point for Curacao, which now has a chance to avenge its first dayloss to Barbados in their round-robin Pool A opener, in five sets, was itcommitted 34 errors to the Bahamians, 29.The duo of Antonio Jennings and captain Rajahl Moxey scored 12 points eachfor Bahamas, while Kenton Dawkins got eight in the loss.Bahamas will now meet T&T for third spot in Sunday’s first match.Speaking after the loss, Moxey first credited Curacao for being a very good teamwhile admitting that his team did not execute its game plan.Gabriel said his players were relaxed at the start but then began to play betterand took control of the match.Bahamas coach, Devince Smith said his team was beaten by a better team inCuracao who played like the defending champions they are.“In our training we went about making some plans for the match, but wecracked under the pressure and did not execute while Curacao remained focusand played consistent volleyball.”Urvin Leito coach of Curacao was happy his team played good volleyball.“Against Bahamas we had to remain focus and stay focus as they showed theyare dangerous team .“We now have a chance to play Barbados again after losing in five sets in ourfirst match.“In the first match, the guys were very nervous and did not pass and set well,but since then we have trained hard to improve our all round game and shouldbe ready for the final.”
