JULY 8th - 10th, 2016
Denver, COCity Park WEST
festival GREETINGS
MISSION and OBJectivesMission: To involve the community in helping to establish self-reliance, believing that pride in one’s culture is the foundation for long-term stability and prosperity.
Toward the fulfillment of its mission, the CBAF is committed to the following:
1. Raise the level of appreciation for the role that Black arts and culture play in the development, growth and well-being of the community.
2. Provide a medium for local Black talent in the area of visual and performing arts.3. Educate and stimulate cultural awareness.4. Cultivate harmony, pride, self-esteem and unity.
Greetings,This is an exciting time for the Colorado Black Arts Festival (CBAF) as we mark 30 years of a remarkable tradition, celebrating African American and African Diaspora culture. Thirty years is a testament to hard work and dedication of our team, some of whom have been with the organization since its inception. I would like to personally thank my fellow board members, development staff, festival coordinators, volunteers, sponsors, vendors, and the community. Your contributions are invaluable in making this event happen.
The CBAF has been unwavering in its mission and we remain steadfast in achieving our goals. I am grateful and honored that it has been my life’s work to help create a venue designed to instill pride and celebrate a rich heritage and tradition.
Please take time to explore our offerings of hands-on and educational activities, visual images, exhibitions, musical expressions, and the suave and rhythmic moves of our dancers.
It is my hope and prayer that we continue to preserve, and pass our rich culture to future generations because it is so important to the collective memory and pride of a people.

Jack Price II is a self-taught artist who believes in his instinctive interpretations, and in the feelings of his subjects. Born in Lubbock, TX, Jack has lived in Denver, Colorado since he was five. He graduated from Manual High School and from the Northern Colorado Painting and Decorating Industry Apprenticeship Program. Much like the African griot, which passes history of the tribe through storytelling, Jack passes history through his drawings. He continues the intricate and enriching story of Black people. “It is important that our story be told to the children, and that we keep our culture alive.” In keeping with this idea, Jack started a tradition of his own. Each year, he does one charcoal drawing for and about his family.
Charcoal is one of the oldest art mediums known to man, and one might assume that, in terms of new techniques, there remains little that can be done with charcoal. Yet, new and exciting approaches to its use continue to flow from Jack Price.
Each one of his drawings has a different story to tell. Some drawings have bold and distinct lines. In other works, the lines are more subtle, conveying emotion.
For each of his works, Jack has written a poem. He explains, “When an idea comes to me for a sketch, I write a poem. I then transfer my poetry into my drawings as the inspiration comes to me, and the inspiration comes from the people I have been exposed to all my life.” His grand-parents have always been part of his inspiration. Their love and encouragement, given to him as a child, continues to be an inspirational force in his work.
Jack has exhibited at numerous locations throughout the Denver area.
