MEMORANDUM

To: All HSC Faculty

From: Clinical and Translational Science Center

Date: March 2, 2018

Re: UNM HSC Health Hackathon

Health Hackathon

The University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center (HSC) Clinical Translational Science Center

(CTSC) is hosting its inaugural ‘Health Hackathon’ the weekend of May 18-20, 2018. This event, modeled

after similar events hosted by institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Yale,

and Harvard, is an exciting opportunity for forward movement in research and prototype development.

The Health Hackathon is a unique opportunity for clinicians, entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists,

developers, designers, and students to address some of the most challenging problems in healthcare

and medicine by collaborating in a fast-paced, competitive environment. At the completion of the event,

winning teams will be awarded prize money to make their ideas come to life.

Participants will kick-off the weekend on Friday night with a ‘working’ social, during which the problems

to be addressed over the weekend will be introduced and individuals will self-select into teams. These

teams will be the pioneers of new ideas and prototypes, which they will develop and hone throughout

the weekend. On Saturday, teams will work to develop their ideas and design their prototypes. The

teams will have access to experienced mentors and resources, including 3-D printers and other

technology, to help them develop their concepts. Come Sunday, all teams will pitch their ideas and

display their designs to a panel of judges.

Interested individuals can apply to participate using the attached Hackathon application. Please contact

Carla Cordova at [email protected] for more information. Space is limited, and a balanced mix

of people from various backgrounds will be invited to participate. Attendees need to plan to attend

Friday evening, all day Saturday, and through Sunday afternoon. Refreshments and meals will be

provided.

We hope that this initial event inspires future healthcare hacking!

UNM HSC Health Hackathon

We welcome clinicians, entrepreneurs, engineers, developers, designers, and students who are

interested in addressing some of the most challenging problems in healthcare and medicine.

What should I bring?

You are welcome to bring a laptop for hacking and a valid ID for admission into the event. We will

provide everything else and more, including food, beverages, hacking materials, and free swag.

Page 18: CBE Undergraduate Student InfoBlast - Series 3Hippie Sabotage, Quinn XCII, HDBeenDope, The Millennial Club and 2 Man Embassy. The music starts at 1 p.m. and runs through 9 p.m. on

How does registration work?

Registration is open—all you have to do is complete the application. Space is limited to 100 participants.

We will be in contact with all first-round applicants regarding their status in mid to late April.

How do teams work?

Each team consists of a maximum of 5 members. Participants will interact during a social kickoff event

on Friday evening, and teams will form at this time. Team registration will happen Friday evening, and

no later than Saturday morning.

What if I don’t have a team?

If you registered as an individual and do not yet have a team, don’t sweat it. There will be several events

geared towards facilitating team formation and project ideation. We will help you find people to work

with!

I don't code -- what about me?

Not all hackers code! In fact, you've found the perfect place and time to pick up new skills and concepts.

There will be mentors, workshops, and tech talks to help ease you through the hackathon experience.

Applications are not filtered based on experience.
