• Our broadband speeds are an issue:

o 4.6m receive sub-9Mbps DSL speeds

o 700,000 cannot get fixed broadband

o Australia ranks 46th in 2Q15 in Akamai rankings for global download speeds

o Average download speed of 7.8Mbps

o Rank 47th in average peak speeds

Australia: Lagging behind in broadband….

• Latest ABS figures show surge in usage:

o Fixed-broadband usage up 25% YoY to 69GB/Month in 1H15.

o Fixed-networks carrying 93% of traffic

• nbn end-users are increasing consumption:

o Average nbn end-user downloaded 110GB in September – up 50% since March

o Total usage (upload + download) increased to 126GB in September

o Some RSPs average nearly 180GB/month

Australia: ….but usage is still booming

MTM: Speeding up the nbn™ rollout…Multi-Technology Mix solves many of the rollout problems we have faced…

• The original nbn™ plan called for 93% Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) deployment….

• FTTP deployment encountered substantial deployment issues in brownfield areas

• Taking fibre from ‘pit to premise’ was problematic

• Only 382,000 brownfield FTTP active end-users connected by September.

• MTM helps to remove some of these problems by utilising existing Copper/HFC network assets

Fibre to the Premises

• Nearly 1 million premises serviceable at September

• 500,000 FTTP end-users now on-board

• FTTP rollout faced significant delivery problems

• nbn has worked to resolve these issues

• Focused on connecting – not just passing - premises

Connecting all the way to the home

Fibre to the Node

• FTTN now launched commercially

• Services progressing very well

• Aim of 500,000 premises RFS by June 2016

• Target 3.7 million premises RFS by June 2018

• Scales up very quickly compared to FTTP

• Designed so that 90% of end-users will get at least 50Mbps

Commercial services now launched – very strong results

FTTN: A great technology for the nbn™FTTN enables the nbn™ network to deliver great speeds sooner…

• With FTTN fibre is built very deep into the nbn™ network – only the copper tail remains….

• Each copper line has its own dedicated bandwidth – it is not shared

• End-user speed does not degrade as cabinet usage rises because…..

• …noise cancellation Vectoring technology is used to reduce the effects of cross-talk

• Each cabinet can serve up to 384 premises

FTTN: The Belmont TrialDelivered great speeds – most end-users got 100Mbps/40Mbps

• nbn conducted a ‘real world’ FTTN trial in Belmont, NSW, delivering great results….

• Most end-users received Layer 2 speeds of up to 100/40Mbps if less than 400 metres from cabinet

• Even end-users in the trial located over 700 metres away got Layer 2 speeds of 60/20Mbps

• Provided services to trial end-users in MDU’s from cabinet located outside building

• Trial used ‘primary line’ not ‘spare pairs’
