Looking back over the past year has the greatest meaning in the cont xt of the previous thirteen year . Covenant College moved to Lookout Mountain in 1964 with 145 students, a large hotel to be renovated, 27 acres of land and a mountain ized mortgage . Cov nant College stand today a a great witness to the vitality of the Christian faith and God's faithfulness. It stand b cause of the continuous support and hard work of many great and generous people-friends, faculty, taff, tru tees, student and churches.

The college has h Id firm to th faith on which it was founded. It grew and prospered during th turbulent i ties and early seventies. The a sets were increased from $425,475 to $2,875,000. Major new building - library, dormitory, physical education, and now the chapel-fine art --have been added to land holdings now totaling more than 1,000 acres. Phy ical education playing fields, art facilities and parking area have al o been add d.

Accreditation ha b n achi ed, library re ourc expanded, faculty and tudent body

nlarg d and the quality of all academic programs upgraded. All accumulated op rational indebtedne ha be n paid off and a modest ndowment of $300,000 e tablished . A ma t r plan for the future ph y ical growth of the coll ge ha been developed and revised.

Th respon e and generou outpouring of friend , foundations and churches in upport of the work of faculty, s taff, trust es, parents and alumni have been a great bl ing to me through the year .

Th Lord ha blessed u all in our efforts to establish and maintain a Chri tian college. It has and will continue to demand the be t that all of us can bring.

A I close my term as President, I commend the college and its future to all of you; I encourage you to give the same high level of support by yo ur influence, your gifts and your prayers that I have received. You, the college and the Lord's work have been great blessings to all the Barn s family. May we go fo,rward with faith and with confidence.

I can only rejoice a I am reminded of the Lord' goodne s to Cov nant College over the past years. I thank Him for His continual faithfuln s . Although l watched the 1977-7 year unfold as pr sid nt-elect, l took a vital interest in everything that happened during the past year.

ow it is time to look for ard, and many alumni and friends f the c llcge ha e asked me what I believ the future direction of the coll ge should be . This question come as areas urnnce that th se alurnni and friend ar still cone rncd about the di tinctively hristian education vvhich Cov nant offer .

By God' grace, I hope to hold firmly to the tat m nt of purpo c of the college and to

consi t ntly \,vork out th implication of our nwtto, "In all thing ... Chri l pre-eminent, " (Col. 1:1 ). I will att mpt to continue to maintain our stance as a college committ d to an evangelical, Reformed doctrinal po ition . Th Bib] will continue to be vie\ cd as the in pi red word of God and will b the ource of truth by which the college e aluat s all di cipline , is u , and tr n d .

The basic po iti n which the college has taken over the years have resulted in growth and great bles ing. I beli ve that the Lord will continue to bl our ffort a we eek fir t Hi kingdom and His righteousness .

I will be working to in ere a e enrollment and to keep steady the flow of gifts and grants for the operating budget. These two aspects of our work, student recruitment and financial development, present tremendou challenges. I urge your prayer support and personal involvement in both areas .

Jesus said that if our faith is a a mustard seed, we will have the power to move mountains. Our mustard seed should blossom as we look at the Lord's goodness and faithfulness in the past. The blessings of the 1977-78 year should remind us that the Lord is able to provide abundantly for His people.

I hope that you will become increasingly acquainted with the Lord's work here at Covenant College, and I invite your full participation in the important months to come.

//L~rE:h President, 1978-

At Covenant, where we are continually thrown on the Lord's mercies, we are reminded constantly that we must remain faithful to the Christian purpose with which the college began. This is not possible without the energetic work of faculty members and students, as they seek to improve an ever expanding academic program.

Page 7: CDuner - Covenant Portal

Keepi.'1g to a statement of purpose is a constant challenge; it requires daily discipline and enduring commitment. We must regularly check to see if we are fulfilling om purpose--our reason for being here.

The following goals a.re outlined in the Covenant College Statement of Purpo e, and there are two things at Covenant which make this statement workable:

The first is that the statement is based 011 Biblical truth. The statement of purpose begins, "The college is committed to the Bible as the Word of God written." Th.rough the truth of the Scriptures we can see all other areas of life. The statement goes on to list four basic aims of the college:

1) to see the creation as the handiwork of God; 2) to acknowledge the fallen nature of ourselves

and of the rest of creation and to respond in view of tJ-te renewal which begins with Christ's redemption;

3) to reclaim the creation for God and redirect it to the service of God and man;

4) to think as Christians about culture; Important goals? Yes! They provide Covenant's

reason for existence! They are based on Scriptural truths!

But how to reach these goals? This leads us to the second point:

The statement of purpose is workable because God enables His people to do His will. Day by day through the last year, we saw Him sustain His work. Whether it was through a stirring chapel speaker, a devoted teacher, an aspiring student, a careful administrator, or a faithful friend of the college, God was our enabler 1

The purpose of Covenant College is stated in its motto-"That in all things Christ might have the pre-eminence" (Col. 1:18) . We acknowledge Christ pre-eminent as the creator of all things, as the redeemer of men fallen into sin, as the touchstone of all truth, and as sovereign ruler over all areas of life.

Join with us in seeing how the Lord enabled His work to be done in an exciting way at Covenant College in 1977-78.

A God-directed faculty . .. The essence of a college or university in the

European tradition consists of the college library and the college faculty . Although we are not ready to limit it quite that much at Covenant, we can see the importance of a highly qualified, God-fearing faculty at a Chri tian college .

In 1977-78 we saw our profe or having an effect on our students ' lives . In the Covenant classroom, ideas were offered and con cience molded .

A 1975 alumnus, now a mi ionary in Chile, said this about hi years at Covenant. "It created a mind et for me . It was a ensitizing thing, and it gave me a

whole different perspective on life-especially my mi sion work. ow I notice things others don't notice ." ow this graduate will be a different kind of mi ionary becau e of hi year at Covenant, and he credit it to one Biblical tudie profes or.

Thi te timonial is consi tent with our idea that what is really important i the teacher student relationship . We may have wonderful facilities and burgeoning curricula, but what happens between the profe sor and the student ha the most lasting impact.

Our 32 faculty members (20 of whom have earned doctorates) , are led by Dean of Faculty Dr. icholas P. Barker. Dr . Barker happily points out that 1977-78 brought faculty approval on new guidelines which provid a solid base for d ciding on our future academic programs, a well a changes in our current program . As the college grow , our program offerings will have to grow, and the e guidelines should enable us to choos tho e programs which are mo t con istent with our overall purpose.

While such general theoretical work was being done, though, more specific developments were taking place :

Dr . Barker accepted an appointment for the spring semester to speak as a guest lecturer at the eight participating coll ges in the Association of Reformed Colleges. He addressed the faculties of Calvin College, Central College, Dordt College, Geneva College, Hope College, orthwestern College, Trinity Christian College, and, of course, Covenant. Entitled " A Christian Position on Aesthetics," the lectures drew an excellent response. Dr. Barker was the fourth in a series of Christian scholars sponsored by the ARC.

The college developed a two-year Associate of Arts degree for those students in the Pre- ursing program. The program enables students to earn a degree before they begin specialized nursing training. Other curriculum improvements included the addition of a course in library science.

A unique psychology tour/class got underway in

8

June . Nine students, under the leadership of Dr. Michael Rulon, Associate Professor of Psychology at Covenant, traveled 8,800 miles to several western states to visit psychological clinics, hospitals, and a psychology convention. They visited a number of college and university campuses along the way . Students, some of whom represented colleges other than Covenant, earned six hours credit for the trip, and Dr. Rulon anticipates further use of the "moving clas room ."

Dr. Paul Gilchrist, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies, spent a fall semester sabbatical studying in I rael. Year-long sabbaticals for 1978-79 were gran ted to Mr. Craig Parker, Assistant Professor of Music, and Dr. Henry Krabbendam, Associate Professor of Biblical studies . Due to these vacancies on the faculty, more part-time professors have been sought out. The re ult has been a bolstering of our business admini tration program.

We thank the Lord for these and other developments which evidence the Lord enabling his people to do His will . Can you agree? Let's look now at some more of these people-the studen ts-that the Lord sent to us in 1977-78.

It is important to realize that Covenant College could not continue its work without the prayerful and sacrificial financial involvement of many people throughout the world, who share our vision. We publish this "thank you" for that partnership, so that you may be encouraged by the other members of the body who are involved in making the ministry of Covenant College possible. We are particularly thankful for the more tnan 500 new investors who joined our efforts this year. We thank you all again for your very vital interest.

.. . and students with When a record 553 students enrolled for classes in

August last year, we thanked the Lord for each one. The number was 29 more than what it had been a year before .

Here again we were made acutely aware of our need to serve the students the Lord had sent to us . Most came, we believe, genuinely seeking a Christian educational experience. Mo t came wanting a truly Christian college atmosphere. This we tri d to provide for them, through classe , resid nee hall living, on-campus entertainment events, off-campus service opportunitie , and chap l services. All student activities at Covenant are de igned to keep Christ's pre-eminence in mind .

Our student body continues to be di ided about equally between men and women. In the fall semester we had 2 7 men and 266 women. Of the total 553 enrolled, over 200 wer n w tudents .

The students repre ented 38 stat , with th highest numbers coming from Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and California, respectively . Thirty-eight students were from foreign countries, some of them missionary children.

Presbyterians in general still make up about two-thirds of the student body. Half of tho e (or 33.1 % of the total student body), are from the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod, and a growing percentage of students from the Presbyterian Church in America are filling our ranks. The other third of our student body comes from a wide variety of evangelical churche , ranging from In de pendent to Baptist.

We were heartened at the very beginning of the academic year when shidents, faculty, staff and administration joined together in the Great Hall for a precedent-setting dedication service. Led by Associate Professor of Biblical Studies Mr. Charles Anderson, the service became a night of singing and testimony as we committed ourselves to the Lord for the year ahead. That service, along with the convocation exercises which followed a few days

, later, set the tone for the entire year. At Covenant, our special events and spiritual

"pepper-uppers" never stop-because of the daily coming-together of the community in what we call "chapel." Last year we enjoyed a number of stimulating lecturers and performers.

In the fall semester, Mr. Wesley Pippert, a UPI correspondent to the White House and Dr. Greg Bahnsen, Assistant Professor of Apologetics at Reformed Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, guest lectured in chapel and classroom situations. Both warned of weakening morality in America today, and gave strong Biblical alternatives . The Lamb's Players,

a theatre and mime troupe from San Diego, California, pre ented a clear gospel message for our students in both spring and fall. The Covenant audience got good expo ure to Christian drama at its best.

The second semester brought Mr. Charles Colson , ex-"hatchet man" for the ixon administration, Mr. John Perkins of Voice of Ca lvary Ministries in MendenhaU, Mississippi, Dr. C. Gregg Singer, Christian historian, Dr. W. Stan.ford Reid of the Univer ity of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and Dr. Lawrence Crabb, a Christian psychologist from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to our chapel podium.

These special guests all came in addition to our regularly cheduled chapel speakers, which occasionally include our own faculty members. One of the riche t spiritual blessings came when the students themselves took over in one of th frequent " Prayer and Prai e" chapels. Here tudent spoke of their need , and testified or ang about the Lord's blessing in their lives.

A full schedule of inter-varsity soccer, cross country, ba ketball, volleyba ll and basebalJ was carried out in 1977-7 , and other tudent took advantag of opportunities to felJowship and play together in Covenant's active intramural program. Two achievements are worthy of mention: the women's basketball team, only in its third year of full- cale competition, won it conference and tow·nament title with an -0 record . The women are looking ahead to another good year-only one team member was a senior.

Sam Mietling, a junior from Lexington, orth Caro lina, and leader of our eras country team, placed 116th in the Boston Marathon in April. Sam, who for two years has carried the Covenant Scots harriers, was running against some 4,000 other marathoners, ome of whom are considered world-class.

These events only highlight a year of studen t activity which no one can fully and accurately ascertain. onetheless, perhaps they convey some of the joy of living and working with young adults in a college situa tion.

The year was climaxed with the twenty-third annual commencement exercises, when 99 se niors received their degrees. Dr. J. I. Packer addressed the grad uates on the subj ect of authority and freedom.

John Parrish, senior class presiden t from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Elsbeth Schaffers, a 4.0 grad uate from Wilmington, Delaware, gave moving testimonies. The college recognized another senior, Sara Belz, for being the last in a family of eight to attend Covenant. The first Belz, Julie , bega n at the college in 1957.

Fifteen seniors graduated with honors- two with perfect records: Philip Pedley of Worthing, England,

and Elsbeth Schaffers (noted above) of Wilmington, Delaware .

And so the students' year came to an end. The impact of Biblically-oriented teaching and a Christ-like atmosphere lives on in our students' minds, v:e believe.

The Facility The mountaintop setting of the Covenant campus

seems to provide an excellent atmosphere for meditation and study. This year, plans for an improved physical facility were completed, several smaller construction projects were finished, and the new chapel/fine arts building came closer to completion. Dedication of the chapel was set for early January, 1979.

The main building on cam pus, Carter Hall, is now in its fiftieth year of existence. Because of the deteriorating condition of some areas of the building, it was slated for complete renovation, to begin in early 1979. Plans for this renovation were completed and approved by our Board of Trustees in 1977-78. We thank the Lord for His leading in this direction, and pray for his continued provision with proper funding, which at this point i just more than one-fifth complete. The total cost of renovation of Carter Hall is set at $5 million.

The new Dora Maclellan Brown Memorial Chapel moved close to completion during the last year. The 700 tons of local mountain stone which make up the outside walls of the 60-feet high building were put in place, and all three of the large tained glass windows were completed. Much of the interior finishing still remains to b done, but the building is expected to be ready for use by November 30 of this year.

The grounds surrounding the chapel, what we call the " center plaza, " will provide a beautiful and accommodating space for the college community to mix and to enjoy study and leisure time. Lawn bushes, pebbled concrete walkways, and expert landscaping are all part of the new plaza plan.

Finally, we are happy that permanent signage with the college name and motto is now on the hill near the front entrance of the college. Small improvements like these make a college campus more complete and more suitable for the work we are doing.

We thank our God for enabling us to do His will in the physical aspect of the work here. Let us look at an area we call stewardship, where we use these and other resources which He has given us.

Stewardshi Stewardship is a word which we apply to the use

we make of the Lord's resources. At Covenant in 1977-78, the Lord made our cup overflow, and we continue to give Him thanks.

Our challenge financially for the year was to raise our budgeted goal of $460,000 in gift and grants in order to claim a $210,000 challenge grant at the end of the fiscal year. Amazingly, with just over a week to go, the goal was still 50,000 short, but within days, the funds were received! A year-end report announcing the success of the challenge grant program was given at a meeting of praise on June 30. Faculty, administration and staff attended.

A further step in our financial challenge wa to use the money and other resources which the Lord had given us in a wise and efficient manner o that costs may be kept at a minimum. We continue to try to keep the rise·in cost of a Covenant education in line with other similar colleges and appropriate to the means of the students whom we serve.

Covenant's costs remain about 20% below the median cost for private colleges. The effort to keep costs down is a constant one, and we desire your prayer support that this may be carried out.

A significant factor in student cost at Covenant i the fact that 74% of our students receive financial aid at an average of $1,918 per person. This adds up to total disbursements (through both loans and grants), of $790,393 from our student financial aid office. This constitutes a substantial contribution to the financial needs of our students.

We are hopeful that student support through scholarships and grants can be increased. Join with us in making a Covenant education more accessible to more students.

Covenant and th Presbyterian •

C rtainly one of th brighte t mom nts during the year came in mid-June in Grand Rapid , Michigan, when the Pre byterian Chmch in America voted to b gin step toward joint governanc of Covenant College.

The fifth General Assembly of the P A accepted its Christian Education ommittee's recommendation to take th first t p of el cting six men to an enlarged 30-member Cov nant board . As financial involvem nt and student support by the people of the PCA increase, the 65,000-member denomination would, conceivabl , after five years , move into full joint governanc of Covenant College with the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod.

Covenant has for twenty-three years been governed by a 24-man board elec ted by the RPC,ES . The Synod extended the opportunity for joint control to the PCA in 1977, based mainly on the fact that the denomination has a conservative theological stance and a south rn base. The PCA was begun as a conservative offshoot of the Presbyterian Church in the United States in 1973.

And so we at Covenant College welcome the PCA into our fellowship! This has been a momentous year, by God's grace, for us, for the people of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod, and for our brethren in the Presbyterian Church in America!
