Message from the Head of School “Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time. – Laura Ingalls Wilder Our return to school this week has been filled with the joy of the Christmas season! But unlike the hustle bustle noise you hear in most places, the atmosphere at our sweet Charlotte Mason school is one of quiet contentment as students engage in hearing a Christmas living book, or making a Christmas craft to instrumental music playing softly in the background. Students begin each day joyfully singing a Christmas hymn together and then proceed to their classrooms, passing by home-like Christmas decorations adorning our hallways. While the younger students enjoy practicing math and spelling with candy canes, our middle and high school students work together to plan and create this year’s CCS Christmas parade float. It’s so much fun to hear their ideas and see their creativity and problem solving skills in putting it all together. There have also been unplanned Christmas moments such as when our 1st graders spontaneously broke out in a chorus of “Jingle Bells” during their class chore time! Yes, Christmas- time at Covenant truly rings of celebration. And each and every student here knows the reason why we’re celebrating - Jesus has come! Thank you for sharing your children with me as I daily get to experience the wonder of Christmas through their eyes. Middle School Form V History, Language Arts and Literature: In History, students explored how Bartolome Las Casas changed his views on enslaving Indians and encouraged Europeans to fight against the social constructs where the powerful oppress the vulnerable. Students continued in their reading to learn how the French and Spanish faught against one another for control of northeastern Florida as well.

Students in Language Arts One are currently in the midst of a unit on adverbs and are learning how adverbs give context and add depth to their writing. They wrote (and rewrote) a paragraph on Christopher Columbus to practice using adverbs. Students in Language Arts Two are currently working on their first persuasive essay and are learning to use the "invention" stage of writing. In this stage, students learn to develop ideas, analyze and examine a subject, and generate information to use as proofs for their first essay.

For Literature, students continued reading in The Sign of the Beaver and answered questions about the context of the material they read.

Physical Science: For this week, students continued their data gathering by doing their experiments on randomly chosen test subjects. Some students have built their prototypes and tested on it. After data gathering, students arranged their data in different ways (tables, graphs, etc.) and are preparing to do the analysis by next week.

High School

Form VI Bible and Literature: As students continued working through the Hebrew Scriptures, they surveyed the books of 1 and 2 Kings to trace the timeline of when the prophets Amos and Isaiah prophesied to the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Students learned through the book of Kings just how frequently the leaders of both kingdoms allowed idolatry, injustice, and the political influence of neighboring nations to destroy their allegiance to the one true God. Students read through various passages in Isaiah and identified how often Isaiah referred to the coming of Jesus, even predicting his death and resurrection.

Students recapped the events of the first five chapters of Black Ships Before Troy and illustrated one scene from each chapter that explained what was taking place. Students chose two characters who allowed their pride to negatively impact the story (chapters 1-5) and analyzed in writing their observations of the theme of pride.

Biology

This week the Biology class learned about the following topics: Classification of Bones; Design of a Bone; Life of a Bone; Structure of a Freely Movable Joint; Types of Freely Movable Joints; Problems of the Joints; and Classification of Muscles. Also, as a culmination of what they’ve learned about bones, students are divided into two groups and each group is tasked to create a video where they can use a Christmas tune and sing about the appendicular bones.

Math

Happy faces of all ages at the Thanksgiving Feast.
