1 INTRODUCTION

The ASCE Student Organization Annual Report can serve as a valuable tool for current and future officers for use in planning and improving the organization. Contact information, detailed summaries of activities and events for the past year, and a statement and assessment of goals (What worked and what didn't?) will help new officers as they prepare to take on their roles. A summary and evaluation of the organization’s activities will help future officers to plan activities and develop achievable goals. Continuity from year to year is a key element for any successful ASCE Student Organization.

According to ASCE Bylaws, Article 9.4.5.2.2, the report shall include:a. A summary statement of the meetings which were held during the preceding calendar year, giving the date

of each, the attendance, the principal speaker and subject, and other pertinent information; andb. Names of the officers and the members by class as of the end of the preceding calendar year.

The ASCE Committee on Student Activities (CSA) reviews all Annual Reports it receives and uses the information to make program improvements and nominate organizations for various ASCE awards.

1.1 Objectives

The Annual Report can help the student organization by meeting the following objectives:1) provide future ASCE Student Organization officers with important information; and2) provide a record of the group’s activities that can be used to promote the student organization within the

University and to potential sponsors, donors, and employers.

1.2 Awards

ASCE Student Organizations submitting the completed report and annual dues by the postmark deadline will be considered for awards including:

1.3 Distribution

In addition to sending one copy to ASCE Student Services, one copy of this report should be placed in the ASCE Student Organization files, and an electronic copy should be maintained in the Organization’s archives. Completed copies of this report, in hardcopy or electronic format, should be distributed separately by the ASCE Student Organization to the following:

1.4 Delinquent Reports

CSA has an active policy on probation, suspension, and disestablishment of ASCE Student Organizations with regard to delinquent Annual Reports and dues. An ASCE Student Organization whose Annual Report has not

been received prior to the CSA Spring meeting, typically held in March, will be placed on probation. Chapters whose reports are received after the February 1 deadline will not be eligible for awards. Please notify ASCE Student Services (1-800-548-2723 or [email protected]) if you are unable to submit your report prior to the deadline.

2 INSTRUCTIONS

Before completing any section of this report, please review these instructions. Use the spaces provided in pages following the sample cover sheet to complete required information. All additional information should be attached to the end of the ASCE Student Organization report as Attachments. The complete submittal must include, at a minimum, Parts I, II, and Attachments A-F. Report contents and format are described in this section.

2.1 Formatting Guidelines

Please use the following format to prepare your report:

Margins Minimum ½” margin on all sides (excluding headers & footers).

Font Size Minimum 10 point in any font.

Page Numbering Place page numbers at bottom center of page.

Page Limit The report may not exceed 100 single-sided (50 double-sided) pages excluding the report cover and section dividers. All attachments (e.g. newsletters, thank you letters, newspaper articles, etc.) are included in the page limit. Reports exceeding the page limit will receive a score of 'zero' (out of 5) for the “Report presentation”. To save paper and shipping costs, double sided copies are encouraged.

2.2 Report Contents - Part I – Student Organization Information

Part I of the report includes objective records relating to leadership, membership, and finances. Obtain Officers’ and Advisors’ signatures as required on the signature sheet.

1. ADVISOR INFORMATIONList information for the Faculty and Practitioner Advisor(s). A Practitioner Advisor is a member of the ASCE Section/Branch in your area who has been appointed by the Section/Branch President to serve as a contact between your ASCE Student Organization and the practitioners in the Section/Branch. If your Organization has more than one Practitioner Advisor, please list each one.

2. ASCE STUDENT ORGANIZATION OFFICERSPrint the names of student officers during the 2009 calendar year by date of office. List any other officers on new lines. If your organization has different officers for each academic term, please list officers by their academic term of service (i.e., Fall, Winter, Spring), and provide dates of service.

3. MEMBERSHIPa. Is attendance at ASCE Student Organization meetings mandatory? ASCE Student Organizations will

not be penalized if attendance is mandatory. Scoring is adjusted to accommodate for mandatory attendance – points for attendance will be excluded from the raw score total. See the sample evaluation sheet provided on page 16.

b. Specify if society-level (i.e., National) ASCE Membership is voluntary or compulsory

c. Numbers provided for student counts should represent the average per term within the calendar year. (e.g. 50 Juniors & Seniors in Spring Term, 60 Juniors & Seniors in Fall Term: Enter 55 as the average per term within the calendar year.)

Use the statistical information to identify areas for potential growth in chapter membership, especially among first and second year students, and to encourage students to become members of ASCE at the Society (i.e., National) level. Recruiting students in their first two years helps to engage these students and to promote continuity in the organization. Society-level membership allows your members to take advantage of the same valuable benefits available to civil engineering professionals. Invite local Section/Branch members, faculty, and practitioners to speak on the importance of professional membership and what employers are looking for on the resumes of graduates.

4. FINANCEProvide a summary of the organization’s financial standing over the past year. This information will help current and future officers plan for events and activities. Specify total Accounts Payable (amounts owed to others for goods or services received but not yet paid for, e.g., steel for the bridge) and Accounts Receivable (expected income, e.g., an annual allocation from your local Branch that is usually received in December and was promised, but has not yet been received). Accounts Payable and Receivable will help your officers plan for the Spring and Fall semesters. Only provide a summary in this section; detailed financial records are provided in Attachment F.

5. IMPORTANT CONTACTSIn alphabetical order, list contacts who contributed to the success of your ASCE Student Organization this year and who you feel will be helpful to future officers. You can include speakers, field trip leaders, any people or companies who provided financial or other support, key contacts at your local Section/Branch. See sample provided below.

2.3 Report Contents - Part II - ASCE Student Organization Goals and Objectives

A key to a successful ASCE Student Organization is to establish goals and objectives at the beginning of a school year or as the officer elections take place. These goals provide the ASCE Student Organization with a constant reference for direction. Assessment of your progress toward meeting your goals and objectives is an equally important part of your leadership activities. Officers, together with the Advisors, should periodically review the goals and the organization’s progress towards meeting them.

In this section, state the goals and objectives of your ASCE Student Organization and specify the actions that were taken to meet the goal (listed under “Action Plan”). Discuss how your organization’s programs and activities have accomplished these goals and objectives. If any goals were not met, discuss what can be done or changed to meet the goal(s) in the future. These can be listed as “Future Actions” under “Action Plan”. You may use the summary sheet provided on page Error: Reference source not found to assist you with a statement and assessment of goals and an action plan.

The Student Organization’s goals must be specific and measurable, and should reflect those factors and activities that are important to your membership and the ASCE community. When brainstorming and setting your goals and objectives, consider why you became a civil engineering major and why you became an ASCE Student Organization officer. Additionally, consider your school’s civil engineering program outcomes and objectives, and the mission of your college or university.

2.4 Report Contents - Part III – Student Organization Meetings

Part III of the report includes objective records relating to meetings, activities, and contacts.

A. ASCE STUDENT ORGANIZATION MEETINGS Meetings to which the general membership of the ASCE Student Organization is invited should be recorded here. All meetings reported in this section must be arranged and sponsored by the ASCE Student Organization. Include joint meetings, technical and professional meetings, field trips and social functions. Do not report attendance at meetings or functions hosted or sponsored by other ASCE or outside groups.

See sample provided below. Provide a sign-in sheet at each meeting to record attendance. If attendance numbers are not available, please write NA or clearly identify if the number is approximated (e.g., ~350). You may increase the table size as needed. Put the header information (grey block) at the top of each new page.

Professional Meetings (PM): Work with your current membership, Department Chair/Head and faculty, alumni, local Section/Branch leadership, and Faculty/Practitioner Advisors to bring in professionals who are willing to give a presentation on a project or discuss professional development. Professional Meetings include those meetings with speakers or where chapter business is conducted. Professional Meetings do not include officer meetings or planning/construction meetings for competitions.

Student talks or paper presentations at ASCE Student Organization meetings (PP): Ask student members discuss their internship/summer work experiences, research activities, or design project results. These provide the speaker with practice in public speaking, and can help the younger students learn about potential future jobs and activities.

Meetings with Professional Conduct (Licensure/Ethics) programs (PC): This is an often overlooked item. Find someone local who has been faced with a moral/ethical dilemma in an engineering setting and ask if they are willing to speak on the topic. This will get the students talking and thinking about ethical behavior. Another suggestion is to ask a local professional engineer (PE) to speak on the importance of registration and the process required to become licensed in your state.

ASCE Student Organization sponsored field trips (FT): Ask your guest speakers, alumni, and local Section/Branch members if they can offer a field trip to a local project. Connect with faculty who organize class field trips. If they are willing to open a trip up to all ASCE students, then you can count it as an ASCE field trip. Remember that field trips are an excellent way to tie classroom knowledge to engineering projects that your chapter members may soon be leading.

ASCE Student Organization sponsored social functions (SF): Social activities are a great way to introduce your current members and ASCE Student Organization activities to faculty, Section/Branch members, and

new students in an informal setting. A primary objective of your ASCE Student Organization should be to have fun!

Officers’ Meetings and Planning Meetings for Organization activities or competitions (OP): Much of the work of the Chapter is done behind the scenes. Officers should meet regularly together with the Faculty Advisor and, to the extent possible, the Practitioner Advisor, to develop and review goals, develop a schedule, plan activities, review the status of chapter funds, discuss logistics for hosting a conference, and so on. Similarly, participation in a competition, whether at the local, Conference, or National level, requires much planning and coordination of personnel, funds, labor, materials, and logistics.

A key to a successful ASCE Student Organization is getting as many people involved as possible. The ASCE Student Organization officers are often relied upon to do a bulk of the work. The more members you have attending meetings, the greater the opportunity for encouraging other students to take an active role in the organization.

B. ASCE SECTION/BRANCH AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS Please list the date, location, and other information below for any meetings sponsored by the ASCE Section, Branch, or Society-level (i.e., National) that members of your ASCE Student Organization attended this calendar year. Also list any technical group meetings or meetings of other professional organizations attended by members of your organization. See sample provided below.

Statistical Information:Total number of students who attended ASCE Section/Branch/Technical group meetings should represent the number of students at all meetings (e.g., 2 students attended 2 Branch meetings each - Enter ‘4’ as the total number.)

Hosting or co-hosting at least one ASCE Section/Branch/Technical group meeting: A partnership between your ASCE Student Organization and the local Section/Branch is a great way for your membership to meet local professionals with common career interests. This activity could involve a luncheon or a social activity (i.e. BBQ, softball game, etc.) to attract more attendees.

Student attendance at an ASCE Section/Branch/Technical group meeting: If you show up at Section/Branch meetings, all sorts of good things can happen! Section/Branch members can help provide funding, speakers, field trips, and other forms of support. Students can also make contacts that will lead to employment.

2.5 Report Contents - Part IV – Student Organization Activities

This section includes a combination of objective and subjective records relating to activities outside of general ASCE Student Organization meetings. With activities represented in this section, ASCE Student Organizations have an opportunity to highlight their accomplishments for the previous calendar year.

1. PARTICIPATION IN STUDENT CONFERENCE & WSCLNumber of representatives who attended the ASCE Student Conference (Recorded in Part IV.1.a) There is more to Student Conferences than the competitions. It is a great place to interact with students from other schools and to make friends who may have an influence on your career in the future. Send as many

members as possible. Many schools have student members pay some or all of their travel expenses so that they can take even more team members.

Participation in WSCL (Recorded in Part IV.1.b). The Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders (WSCL) is an extremely valuable ASCE Society-level (i.e., National) event that benefits your program directly. This is where you learn about ASCE as an organization, and where you obtain the tools for running an effective ASCE Student Organization. Send as many new officers as possible, and make sure that your Faculty and Practitioner Advisors understand the importance of their participation as well.

2. ASCE STUDENT ORGANIZATION NEWSLETTER & HOMEPAGENewsletters and web sites work together to keep your members, alumni, and sponsors informed as to what the Student Organization is doing. Newsletters help remind people to check out your web site. Your web site, if well maintained, can provide the latest information about activities. The combination can really make a difference. Electronic distribution of newsletters is acceptable. However, email announcements do not constitute a newsletter. If your group maintains a page on a Social Networking site, be sure to alert others to it so students will be informed about upcoming meetings and activities.

3. PRESENTATIONS OUTSIDE OF THE ASCE STUDENT ORGANIZATIONReport presentations made by one or more of your student members on a professional or technical topic undertaken in some ASCE- or academic-related environment, such as an ASCE Section/Branch meeting, National Engineers Week Event, or Student Conference. Presentations to potential ASCE Student Organization donors or community service project clients may be reported here. Meeting announcements, project presentations given as a mandatory part of a course, and the introductory slide presentation given at the WSCL should not be included in this section. See sample table provided below.

Consider making presentations to your local Section/Branch or to local civic groups about your performance at a Student Conference, special projects, etc. Presenting your ASCE Student Organization activities at a local elementary, middle, or high school is a great way to share information on your college and future profession. Many opportunities exist – investigate! Speaking outside the ASCE Student Organization represents an excellent marketing/promotion opportunity and allows the speakers to practice valuable communication skills.

4. PARTICIPATION IN ASCE STUDENT MEAD PAPER COMPETITIONThe Mead Paper Competition provides a wonderful opportunity to explore topics in engineering ethics. Many Student Conferences now use the same topic for their paper presentation competition. The paper competition rules and topic are available on the ASCE web site at http://www.asce.org/students.

5. PARTICIPATION IN ASCE SOCIETY-LEVEL CIVIL ENGINEERING EVENTSociety-level (i.e., National) events include Institute events, conferences, and the ASCE Annual Conference. These events provide excellent opportunities for ASCE Student Organization members to participate in technical sessions, field trips, and Younger Member activities while meeting and networking with students, faculty, and industry professionals from around the world. The National Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge competitions are not included among society-level events.

6. PARTICIPATION IN PRACTITIONER AND FACULTY ADVISOR TRAINING WORKSHOPThe Practitioner & Faculty Advisor Training Workshop (PFATW) is a 2-day workshop, similar to the WSCL. It provides a great opportunity for ASCE Advisors to participate in a community with other advisors, where they can learn about the value and purpose of ASCE Student Organizations and receive tools useful for helping to make their student organization a success.

2.6 Report Contents - Attachments

Please include each of the following attachments with the report. Attachments A-F are already designated. Additional attachments (G and higher, with no maximum) may be added in an organized manner. All attachments must be clearly marked.

2.6.1 ATTACHMENT A – Membership Lists

Membership lists should be included as Attachment A of the ASCE Student Organization Annual Report as follows:A.1) List of your ASCE Student Organization members and their years in school. Please do not include

Student ID or Social Security Numbers in this list.A.2) List of Society-level (i.e., National) ASCE Student Members. (sent by ASCE Student Services to the

Faculty Advisor during the Fall Term)

Note: The Society-level Student Member Roster provided by Student Services should only be used as a starter list as it may not contain the most current information.

2.6.2 ATTACHMENT B – Sample Meeting Announcements, Programs, Agendas

Include a sample of sample meeting announcements, programs, agendas, etc. as Attachment B of the ASCE Student Organization Annual Report. Do not include copies of all announcements, etc.; a representative sample is sufficient.

2.6.3 ATTACHMENT C – Sample Newsletter and/or Printout of Web Site

Please attach one sample copy of your newsletter and/or a print out of sample sections of the ASCE Student Organization web site as Attachment C of the ASCE Student Organization Annual Report. Do not include copies of all newsletters or a printout of the entire web site; a representative sample is sufficient.

2.6.4 ATTACHMENT D – Summary and Highlights of Meetings and Activities

To convey a more complete picture of ASCE Student Organization activities, it is suggested that a brief summary giving the highlights of each professional meeting and other activities be prepared on additional sheets and included as Attachment D to the Annual Report.

Other activities include any ASCE Student Organization field trips, social activities, competition projects, and activities that enhance the overall ASCE Student Organization program at your school. Please include any joint meetings and activities with other organizations. A summary of preparations for and participation in competitions including the Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, or local ASCE-sponsored competitions may be included in this section.

Please limit the summary of each meeting/activity to one page. A sample format is provided on page 11– use this to document each activity separately. Photos are highly encouraged!

2.6.5 ATTACHMENT E – Special Projects

ASCE encourages its members to provide leadership through special projects. Thus, it is appropriate for ASCE Student Organizations to undertake special projects that will fit in with the “people serving” role of

civil engineering. Since you will be accomplishing your projects as an ASCE organization, the most desirable activities are those requiring engineering expertise, although other service efforts are also worthwhile. Successful projects are often published in ASCE News. A list of examples can be found in the ASCE Student Organization Handbook.

To be considered an acceptable special project, the project must have benefits outside the ASCE Student Organization and ASCE. Construction of a concrete canoe, steel bridge, or a fundraising project for your ASCE Student Organization do not qualify as “Special Projects”. The project should be directed toward community service or a project on campus or in the community that is for the benefit of more than just the ASCE Student Organization and its members. Hosting a Student Conference, National Concrete Canoe Competition, or National Student Steel Bridge Competition involves community participation and does qualify as a special project. Other examples include community service projects, National Engineers Week activities, outreach to K-12 students, and other activities that benefit more than the ASCE Student Organization.

If you do undertake special projects, they must be documented by report in narrative form using a format acceptable for formal technical reports. This format will provide a record of activities for your ASCE Student Organization files, make the project reports suitable for publication, and make it possible to be evaluated fairly. Special projects often represent a group’s best opportunity to achieve many of its goals and objectives. Within the special project report, highlight those goals that were addressed as part of the project.

To assist you with the organization of your report on special projects, use either the cover page found on page 12, or provide this information for each project on a separate cover sheet of your own design. The body of the report that follows the cover page should contain the narrative description of your project complete with photographs, news releases and other information necessary for the complete documentation of your efforts.

In recognition of outstanding service at the ASCE Student Organization level, the Committee on Student Activities may award special prizes and/or recognition to the student organization.

2.6.6 ATTACHMENT F – Financial Statement

Every successful organization maintains complete documentation of its income and expenses. A concise list of income and expenditures is helpful for planning purposes and will demonstrate to your sponsors that their donations are being put to good use. A complete listing of income sources will also provide future officers with ideas for raising funds, a consistent challenge faced by student organizations.

Income sources include dues, allocations to clubs from the university, donations (list by donor or source), fundraisers, or any other sources. Expenditures can be combined into major categories. 2.7 ASCE Student Organization Advisor Evaluation and Award Nomination

CSA requires that each ASCE Student Organization advise the Committee on Student Activities on the effectiveness – or ineffectiveness – of your Faculty and Practitioner Advisors. The Evaluation of Advisory Personnel form, found on page 71, must be completed by the ASCE Student Organization. This evaluation form should be submitted at the same time as the annual report but sealed in a separate envelope. The Advisors (Faculty or Practitioner) should not be given access to this from, even if the evaluation is a positive one.

There is often a correlation between a successful ASCE Student Organization and an active, involved advisor. To recognize and reward the dedication required to be an ASCE advisor, the Committee on Student Activities offers Advisor Awards based on nomination forms received from students. If your ASCE Student Organization would like to nominate your Faculty Advisor and/or Practitioner Advisor for Society-level (i.e., National) recognition, please complete the nomination form found on page 72. One nomination form must be completed for each person being nominated. Please note that submission of the Evaluation of Advisory Personnel form is not considered a nomination. Completed nominations should be included with the advisory personnel evaluation in a sealed envelope and submitted with the ASCE Student Organization Annual Report.

Nominations will be reviewed with the annual report and special recognition will be given to those Faculty Advisors and Practitioner Advisors who have significantly contributed to the success of an ASCE Student Organization. If you are nominating your Advisor please take the time to prepare a complete write-up of your organization’s experiences with this Advisor, and describe their contributions to your organization’s or personal successes.

ANNUAL REPORT EVALUATION

The ASCE Committee on Student Activities (CSA) will evaluate the report and Student Organization performance using the Evaluation Sheet provided on page 16. The overall score obtained by an ASCE Student Organization is calculated by adding scores in each of the following areas:

PART II. ASCE STUDENT ORGANIZATION GOALS AND OBJECTIVES(Please see instructions on p. 4)

Mission statement: The ASCE FIU Student Chapter’s mission is to enhance networking relationship and foster our student community through hands on experience in civil engineering.

Objectives: Our mission statement is a declaration of our chapter’s commitment to the ASCE organization and to the FIU College of Engineering, In order to accomplish our mission in 2009, we generated two main goals that assist our chapter in keeping a good focus and succeeding in serving our student community.

Goals and Assessment:

Goal #1:Create and participate in more events with other organizations and student chapters

Action Plan: In order to achieve this, we reached out to various student leaders of the FIU College of Engineering, University of Miami and local professionals chapters to set up events. In doing so, our members would be actively exposed to the web of networking opportunities available in Miami, FL.

Assessment of Goal #1:The reason for us to pursuit this goal is to expand our members networking opportunities and create a base for ASCE FIU to showcase its civil engineering student body. In doing so, we would build external relationships with potential sponsors and employers. We noticed that we had a greater turnout for those events we had in partnership with professional societies than those with student organizations.

Follow-up Plan for Goal #1:We are looking to incorporate events that consist of professional and other student organizations together.

Goal #2: Increase the number of freshmen and sophomore members to promote longevity in membership

Action Plan:Have events that are not too technical and incorporate other aspects of college life to make ASCE FIU a well rounded society.

Assessment of Goal #2: We hosted many social events like the 2nd annual engineers tailgate and created ASCE FIU ATHLETICS, which was an initiative to compete in intramural sports. Also, we had more hands on events like field trips to expose the discipline in a much more fun way.

Follow-up Plan for Goal #2:We noticed a definite increase in the number of freshmen and sophomore members. We found a way to get students involved with no prior knowledge or coursework in the civil engineering major.

President Tanya Jackson introduces new members to ASCE and informs about the various competitions that take place during the conference.

President Tanya Jackson talks about dates, transportation, and accommodation to Vanderbilt University. We will be traveling with UM.

Conference deposits of $40 due today were collected by Vice-President Yulet Fernandez.

Team captains for Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, Concrete Cylinder, and the Environmental competitions give brief updates.

Engineers Week 2009, February 15-21.

Engineers Make it work Banquet, February 18th, Double Tree Hotel on PGA Blvd

Dronix spoke about the Engineering Expo on Friday, February 20th from 7:30am – 2pm. We may participate in other competitions like the egg drop and tug of war. A minimum of 50 volunteers are needed to assist as tour guides and help coordinate the event.

AAA Fundraising Events

Charlie, the Activities Coordinator, spoke about fundraising on February 8th and 28th.

canoe team needs help on Sunday. They plan to be shredding and casting on this day.

o Surveying team- Team Captain mentioned that team members will be assisted by Professor Michael Whitling in preparing for competition.

o Transportation Team- Team Captain mentions that team members will be reviewing a manual that is used by DOT in order to prepare for the competition.

o Steel Bridge Team- Team Captain informed members that the team has designed a 240lb bridge that should take about a week 1 ½ to be built.

o Professional Paper - Team Captain informed that paper is in the progress of being written and that it is being written on a natural disaster.

o Tshirt Competition Team - Team Captain passed around a draft of the t-shirt design and asked for suggestions to design.

This is a Miami-Dade Schools program which includes about 150 middle school students learning a little something about bridges. A presentation will be giving by Rodolpho and Valerie and we still need some members to help man the event.

Activity Summary:Florida International University hosted the “Third Annual Concrete Exposure Day” with workshops and field demonstrations. The workshops included high strength concrete, using concrete to obtain LEED credits, using fly ash in concrete mix design, and lightweight insulating concrete. ASCE members participated as staff members of the event. Students had an opportunity to network and enjoyed a free lunch. We had six volunteers but many students attended the workshops and demonstrations.

Activity Summary:FIU and UM ASCE collaborated to share a bus to transport members to Vanderbilt University for the Southeastern Student Conference. FIU ASCE members participated in all existing competitions. Our chapter won 1 s t place in the Mystery Competition and 3rd Place in the Mystery Competition. FIU placed 13 th overall out of 26 universities. We broke the FIU record of SESC attendees this year by having 53 students compete in the 14 competitions, namely: Plan Reading, Transportation, Mystery, Professional Paper, Steel Bridge, Visual Display, Environmental, Concrete Cylinder, Balsa Wood Bridge, Geotechnical, T-Shirt, Surveying, Concrete Canoe, and Concrete Disc. Activity Summary:On this day, a special meeting was held to hold elections for the 2009-2010 officer term. Candidates gave a brief speech and presentation on why they should be elected to the position they were running for. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and have them answered by the candidates. Ballots were passed around, filed out by the members and then counted. The results were then announced. Elections for Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge captions were also held on this day.Also, on the same night, our faculty advisor, Dr. Nakin Suksawang and professional advisor, Julieta Rivero-Manso, E.I were recognized for their commitment to the FIU chapter and were awarded plaques. It is a delight to know that they will be with us for the upcoming term.Tanya Jackson, a junior year student and acting president, was awarded a scholarship by the ASCE Miami-Dade branch. The scholarship was presented by both Mr. Sergio Alfonso and Mr. Lucas Rincon. Ms. Jackson’s hard work and effort was definitely highlighted.

Activity Summary:Ten members of FIU ASCE attended the Cemex field trip in October 2009. This field trip was a 3 hour event in which the participants visited the Cemex plant in Okeechobee. The participants gathered in the conference room for lunch and a presentation on the plant’s operations and the excavation issues pertaining to South Florida. After the presentation, a tour of the plant was given. This tour took us around the entire site in Cemex vans to see the actual process. The participants witnessed the mining, transporting, and sorting of different sized aggregates. The field trip provided an opportunity for the students to see how concrete aggregates are made and the massive stock piles needed to sustain construction in an urbanized area.

Activity Summary:The Cuban American Society of Civil Engineers (CAACE) is a prestigious engineering society found in the South Florida region. This society helps aspiring Hispanic Civil Engineers to achieve their career goals. The CAACE hosted an event in FIU to recruit younger members into its society. This event was a critical part of the semester; it provided networking opportunities for ASCE members of UM and FIU. The CAACE board also explained the status of the job market in South Florida. Food and beverages were served in the event and several students joined the CAACE. Many of the professionals of the board of the CAACE are partners, associates, and co-founders of engineering firms in Miami. This event allowed students to make contact with entrepreneurs and higher-level management; providing a chance to ask questions concerning long-term career goals. One of the 50 FIU student members received a scholarship that night sponsored by the CAACE

Project Abstract: (Provide a brief description of the project)On Saturday November 21st the Engineering Center at FIU hosted the Bridge Design Seminar for Miami-Dade Public School (MDPS). Stephanie Strange, the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Retention at FIU, coordinated with Ava D. Rosales, the Instructional Supervisor for Secondary Education for MDPS, in order to organize the event and recruit volunteers.

Among the volunteers were members from the FIU student chapter of ASCE. Many students, teachers, and parents were present to hear Valerie Bottaioli’s and Rodolfo Tobon’s presentation on bridge design as well as Meredith V. Johnson’s and Lillian Marrero’s presentation on Water Conservation.

Teachers and students demonstrated their enthusiasm and participation by asking many practical questions on the rules of the competition, methods of assembly, and truss design for the bridges. Overall, it was a great experience to share with the next potential generation of engineers.

Please accept this informal thank you for a wonderful opportunity afforded our students, parents and teachers on Saturday, November 24, 2009. There were 114 participants on site (middle and senior high students, parents and teachers) at the Florida International University, College of Engineeringcampus who participated in the SECME Bridge Design Seminar that was dynamically presented by the engineering student members of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and EWB. The long-standing partnership with the College of Engineering, more than 15 years of sponsorship of SECME Seminars and competition, is evident in the seemingly effortless accomplishment of engineering student-designed presentations, participant interpretation of rules and producing a preliminary sketch and structural design within a couple hours. Of equal delight, the development of the Facebook page to document the day’s excitement. Below are several reflections from the participants that sum up the experience better than I could:Student (Senior High): I used to think that the bridge was one of the easiest parts to the competition and that it did not require a lot of work. But now I know that it comes down to be a really important part of the competitionStudent I used to think that bridges were very simple and easy to make. I thought that it was just a few measurements here and there. But now I know that it takes a lot of work. Editing and revising. There are a lot of measurements required.Student: I used to think that bridges were very simple to build and understand. But now I know that bridges are very complex mechanism but they are also very fun!!! :)Student: I used to think the truss bridge was the strongest bridge. But now I know the arch bridges are stronger. Teacher: I used to think these projects were complicated and expensive. I also thought they were geared toward students that were exceptionally smart. But now I know that will assist our students in understanding the different aspects of engineering and realize it is an obtainable/realistic goal. Teacher: I used to think bridge design had to include technical calculations & introduce them in trusses. But now I know students can pick up skills by constructing basic designs.Teacher: I used to think that building bridges were for more complicated to plan and design. But now I know it takes Pythagorean theorem, force and motion, and good creativity. JTeacher: I used to think it would be easy because I looked info on the net, but after seeing new rules, I need to re-examine. But now I know I can get support from fellow teachers and FIU.Parent : I used to think architects are math experts. But now I know they are also artists - Parent: I used to think too many thing I can do for my son. But, now I know my son has more opportunity at the engineering future study.Parent I used to think bridges were just high rise streets easily made by architecture. But, now I know it takes a lot of measuring, a lot of math, and most of all patience.Parent: I used to think bridges was just a function of point A to point B. But now I know weight, wind, gravity has a play in construction of bridges.
