A Note from the VETs
This semester is flying by, and it has certainly been a busy one! We’ve had two packed movie
nights, three hostel events, tea times, and lunches—not to mention all the English practice
happening in the drop-in centre!
As we look towards the end of the semester, we encourage you to come to the drop-in centre
far in advance of the LCE 1020 deadline (April 15) and 2010 deadline (April 22), so that you
can avoid the line! And don’t forget that we are here for more than your requirements. Now is
the time to take advantage of these resources and equip yourself for future success!

Three Ways to Excel on Final Exams
We are approaching the end of the semester, which means you probably have a lot of final exams and
projects to prepare! Whether you have a presentation or a multiple-choice test, try these 3 tips to
ensure study success:
1. Find a good study environment – Some prefer to study with friends; some work better alone.
Maybe you need silence to concentrate, or maybe you do your best while listening to music.
Experiment with different environments to find where you concentrate best!
2. Make a schedule – Studying for shorter periods of time across several days works better than
cramming at the last minute, but it can be hard to manage your time with so much to do! Try
making a calendar or time-table to plan when you will study. Don’t forget to schedule breaks!
3. Come to the Drop-In Centre! – Whether you have an argumentative essay, a presentation, or
just need a space to work and ask questions, our door is open, and we would love to help.

Musical English
In February the VETs held their first movie night event of the spring semester: Hairspray: The Musical. While learning English from a musical might sound silly, it's actually one of the better ways to engage in English learning outside of the classroom. Musicals have so many different elements that can help you learn! Firstly, they cover a wide range of topics and media types, so whether you like your movies to be cartoon or live-action, lighthearted or more serious, you can find a musical you'll enjoy. Secondly, musicals have been gaining popularity across the world, and the modern phenomenon is rooted in the west, so watching musicals can be a great way to learn more about Western culture. And last but certainly not least, most of the lyrics in songs from musicals utilize many literary devices such as metaphors, rhymes, and puns that will boost your English abilities and impress your teachers! Here is a list of some great musical movies to check out:
Grease
Into the Woods
Les Miserables
Mama Mia
Moana (and most Disney movies!)
