Subject Guides

• The Library has subject guides in many different topics.• These guides list dictionaries, encyclopedias,

handbooks, directories, databases and websites in a variety of subjects.

• To access these subject guides online: Go to the homepage at http://library.lakeheadu.ca and under “Find” select “Resources by Subject”

Locating journal articles on a topic

• In order to find an article on a specific subject, you need to use a journal index or database.

• The index/database provides basic citation information (journal title, volume, page and year)

• Some indexes and databases provide full-text journal articles

• Go to the Library home page and select Journal Articles under “Find”

Scholarly Journals

• Before we start searching scholarly databases for journal articles, how do you know if an article is scholarly?


Magazines

• Magazines may contain unsigned articles• contain articles of general interest about personalities,

current news items, etc.• will contain many advertisements

Scholarly Journals

• All Scholarly/research articles should have references or a bibliography and footnotes.

• Many scholarly journals will include an editorial board which tells you how articles are published.

• They may include an abstract or summary of the article

• In the Sciences, a journal or journal article in the refers to original research.

• A review is a review of the literature

• So now that we know what a scholarly/research article is, let’s see how to find them!


Searching Biological Abstracts

• What is Biological Abstracts?• Biological Abstracts monitors more than 5,000 international journals

to ensure that virtually every life science topic is covered, including agriculture, biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, ecology, the environment, microbiology, neurology, pharmacology, public health and toxicology

• Coverage is from 1985-• Only 10 simultaneous users



• You can search Biological Abstracts by:

Keyword search – use a combination of words and phrases

Natural language = ordinary English

Subject = Map Term to Subject Heading

• What is Web of Science?• Provides web access to the Institute of Scientific Information's Science

Citation Index Expanded, Social Science Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Conference Proceedings Citation Index- Science, and Conference Proceedings Citation Index- Social Science & Humanities. Unlike most other indexes, citation indexes allow users to search for articles that have cited a known author or work, thus retrieving more recent research on a similar topic.

• Web of Science has an added feature called Cited Reference Search.

• What is that?• Cited Searching allows you to find articles by a specific author or a

particular work of an author and see if they have been cited in other articles.

• How can this help?• This allows you to see how research and ideas develop and grow.

• How does it work?



Note: Use the author’s

last name and

only the first initial

Use an * (asterisk) if there is a

middle name or second

You can search by the author’s name, by the author and a specific work

and by a year or a range of years

You can choose one, a few or all of the articles

• What is RefWorks?• RefWorks is a web-based bibliography and database

manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases.

• You can use these references in writing papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography.

• When you access past exams, e-journals and most of our electronic resources from off-campus, you will need to login with your Lakehead University email username and password.

• Remember to omit the @lakeheadu.ca after your username.
