Havana Daydreaming

Outside the window, overlooking the library of Middletown High School South, a daydreaming student in Ileanna Laurarri's Spanish class could capture a glimpse of the football ๏ฟฝ eld and the concession stands that form a neat ring around the perimeter. On most days, she would o๏ฟฝ er you some sort of rebuke, "mira!" but on this par-ticular day she stopped and looked out the window, too, then told a story.

"One morning, the teacher in our class made all of the students line up against the wall and turn our backs. She then told us to pray to God to give us ice cream. So we prayed. Then she said turn around. And there was no ice cream. Some of us started to cry. I was 6 years old."

You know how a good story can quiet a room? ๏ฟฝ e normally rowdy class was silent.

"Our teacher, she told us to turn around a second time, facing the wall. She then told us to

ask Fidel Castro for ice cream. And we did. And when we turned around, there was an ice-cream stand waiting for us."

With that, she looked at me, and said, "Now, when I ask you, how to ask me in Spanish 'where is the library,' are you going to remember?"

So, Yasiel Puig, when everyone was heckling you in the out๏ฟฝ eld that one a๏ฟฝ ernoon in Kansas City, now you know the full story and reason as to why that one person eating an ice-cream cone in the bleachers, that guy who made you stop, turn around and look up in bewilderment, yelled out "Hey Yasiel! Donde esta la biblioteca?"

Cuba, if you haven't heard by now, is no longer a closed-off nation for America. We just ran up our ๏ฟฝ ag there a couple weeks ago. To most Americans, when we think about Cuba, we think about Kennedy and the Bay of Pigs. The Cuban Missile Crisis. Very good cigars and rum. Airlifts. Gitmo. Little Elian.

For Cuban athletes and

Cub an-Amer ic ans , thoughts of Havana dredge up far di๏ฟฝ erent feelings. For some, it meant risking your life and defecting in order to play baseball in America. Think about the stress you would feel facing a Major League hitter or pitcher on your best day. Now think about it with the thought that your family le๏ฟฝ behind may be in severe trouble because of your decision.

There's a heartbreak there for many Cubans that is hard to under-stand. Their love of country is great, but they would have loved to par-ticipate in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. ๏ฟฝ ey would have loved to have seen the late, great Teo๏ฟฝ lo Stevenson ๏ฟฝ ght Muhammad Ali. It almost happened, but Stevenson turned the ๏ฟฝ ght down, saying the millions of dollars o๏ฟฝ ered him was not worth losing the love of the millions of Cubans in Havana.

Well, now there will be plenty of things o๏ฟฝ the field to settle between America, Cuba and Cuban Americans. But finally, at long last, it doesn't mean people will have to risk their lives in order to play a game, and everybody can have an obscenely overpriced ice-cream cone.

New Kaskaskia College President Dr. Penny Quinn was the subject of a meet and greet reception in the Lifelong Learning Center on campus Thursday, August 27, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A large number of com-munity leaders and well-wishers were on hand to meet and welcome Dr. Quinn, who took over the Kaskaskia College presi-dency from Dr. Jim Underwood upon his re-tirement on June 30.  KC Marketing Director Travis Henson acted as emcee for the event.

Dr.  Penny Quinn comes to Kaskaskia College from Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kansas, where she served as Vice-President.  She brings to KC 25 years of experience in public education and 23 yearsโ€™ experience in the community college system.  She earned a Bachelorโ€™s degree from Ball State University, a Masterโ€™s degree from Washington State University, and a Doctorate from Indiana State University.

Dr. Quinn has served as instructor, department chair, director of student retention, honors program director, federal grant co-ordinator, and vice-presi-dent of Instruction and Student Services.   She brings a great deal of lead-ership qualities and experi-ence to her position as President of KC.

Speaking of what she has learned about Kaskaskia College so far, Dr. Quinn said, โ€œIn my experience, lots of schools say they are a family, but KC really is.  Whenever there is a need, everyone pitches in without having to be asked.โ€

On her personal phi-losophy, Dr. Quinn said that โ€œI am not a dictator; I am a listener.  ๏ฟฝ e sta๏ฟฝ has a lot of great ideas, and we are working to see what can be accomplished moving forward.โ€

Some of Dr. Quinnโ€™s goals include increasing ๏ฟฝ nancial reserves, looking at bolstering the infrastruc-ture of the physical campus, and ๏ฟฝ nding opportunities to increase enrollment and bolster retention.  She also wants to increase the con-nection between sta๏ฟฝ and faculty by having more social interactions.

Another focus is eco-nomic development of the region. One of KCโ€™s mis-sions is to determine the needs of area employers and communities and to implement training pro-grams for students and employees to meet those needs.

Aside from her profes-sional background and goals, Dr. Quinn shared some personal details.  She originally hails from rural Indiana, and is a ๏ฟฝ rst gen-eration college graduate, with her father and mother attending school only until the eighth and ninth grades, respectively.  โ€œProviding access to students who would otherwise not have opportunities is why I am so committed to the com-munity college vision,โ€ she said.  She enjoys reading and crafts, although she currently doesnโ€™t have much time for either, she said. Her goal for this weekend is to prepare two tables for re๏ฟฝ nishing.

Some of Dr. Quinnโ€™s family and friends attended the event, including her youngest daughter Brianna, son-in-law Jared, and young granddaughter Avery.  Her best friend since 1982, Paula Daum, also made the trip from Indiana.

โ€œWhen I met Penny, we were college roommates our freshman year,โ€ Daum said.  โ€œShe is a quality person who I knew I wanted to keep in my life.  She is bright, capable, and articulate.  Congratulations to Kaskaskia College for hiring the best.โ€

โ€œIt is an honor and priv-ilege to represent the people of the 15th Congressional District in Washington, DC, and I do not take that responsibility lightly,โ€ said John Shimkus upon an-nouncing he intends to seek re-election.

โ€œ๏ฟฝ e process starts very early in Illinois,โ€ he noted.  โ€œBeginning September 1, petitions can be passed in order to gain placement on the March primary ballot.โ€

Shimkus cited his expe-rience as a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee for the accomplishments he has been able to make this year.

๏ฟฝ e full U.S. House has passed two bills sponsored by S h i m ku s โ€“ t h e DOTCOM Act and the TSCA Modernization Act.  ๏ฟฝ e DOTCOM Act chal-l e n g e d t h e O b a m a Administrationโ€™s unilateral decision to give away control over the Internet; however, they have backed down from the original

plan a๏ฟฝ er the bill passed.โ€œThe Toxic Control

Substances Act is a 1970s relic that does not work,โ€ Shimkus noted.  โ€œMany years were spent to get to this point, and many other legislators tried, but I was able to get this through my committee and the full House with just one no vote.โ€

In announcing his re-election bid, Shimkus also rea๏ฟฝ rmed his support for the pro-life movement, Second Amendment rights, and our local natural re-sources such as coal and oil.

Shimkus is married to Karen since 1987.  They reside in his hometown of Collinsville and have three sons. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (BS) and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (MBA).

A l s o s u p p o r t i n g Congressman Shimkusโ€™ re-election are members of the General Assembly that serve overlapping territory, including State Senators

David Luechtefeld, Dale Righter, Chapin Rose, and Jason Barickman and State Representatives David Reis, John Cavaletto, Bi l l Mitchell, Chad Hays, Adam Brown, Charlie Meier, Tom Bennett, Reggie Phillips, and Terri Bryant.

Those interested in helping Congressman Shimkus gather petition signatures should contact his campaign at 618-344-1919 or email [email protected].  Petitions can also be down-loaded at www.volunteers-forshimkus.com.

No Job Too Big or Small.

Enjoy live gospel music on Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Cowden Free Methodist Church Camp, located o๏ฟฝ Rt. 128 between Cowden and Beecher City. Look for signs. ๏ฟฝ ere will be an all day concert with three of Gospel Musicโ€™s best: ๏ฟฝ e Lesters of St. Louis MO, The Chosen Ones of Manchester, IL and One Voice from Marion, IL.

Tickets should be pur-chased in advance for lunch. $15 for concert, $6 for lunch. Send self-ad-dressed stamped envelope to: M. Smith, 801 S. St. John St., Bethany, IL 61914. Make checks payable to Melody Smith. Call 217-433-1014 for more infor-mation.

๏ฟฝ e Lestersโ€œWhether you have fol-

lowed the music of the Lesters for years โ€” or youโ€™re just finding out about us for the very ๏ฟฝ rst time, simply put, we love music . . . and we love in-troducing others to Jesus Christ through our music and personal ministry. Itโ€™s a passion that began with our grandparents, Harvey and Opal Lester, in 1925. And itโ€™s one that has endured to the third, fourth and ๏ฟฝ ๏ฟฝ h generations. In fact, this year our family is celebrating eighty-eight wonderful years of sharing the Good News through Gospel music. And weโ€™re more excited now than ever before!โ€

โ€œOne of our highest pri-

orities is to remain real and relevant โ€” never losing sight of the Message, but always challenging our-selves to elevate the sound and quality of our music in order to better reach todayโ€™s generation.โ€

One VoiceOne Voice was organized

in 2003, and immediately audiences responded over-whelmingly to their rich vocal blend and ability to effectively communicate the message of the Gospel in song. Since the trioโ€™s for-mation, they have been ministering to congrega-tions all across the country.

๏ฟฝ e vocals quality and rich harmony that One Voice has become noted for is a result of the blending of three unique and versa-tile vocalists.

Chosen Ones๏ฟฝ e Chosen Ones feature

two generations of smooth family harmony, blending both traditional and pro-gressive Southern Gospel music. ๏ฟฝ ere unique ap-proach to Gospel Music appeals to a diverse audi-ence.

The Chosen Ones are celebrating 41 years in Gospel Music, having begun their ministry in 1974. They have sung throughout the United States and abroad, per-forming over 160 personal appearances annually as well as appearing on Gospel Music Television. They have released over 20 re-cordings, which have in-cluded 4 national radio releases. Their latest re-cording, โ€œSo Blessedโ€ was released in August 2012. To learn more about their ministry you can visit www.thechosenones.org

It is the desire of The Chosen Ones, to present more than just a concert, but a worship experience. ๏ฟฝ ey use the medium of Southern Gospel Music to present the Gospel Truth and encourage the Church.

Make plans to attend this exciting event and experi-ence ๏ฟฝ e Chosen Ones, ๏ฟฝ e Lesters and One Voice in concert. For more informa-tion about this event, please contact Melody Smith at 217-433-1014 Advanced tickets are needed.

I had lunch with a friend ๏ฟฝ ursday in Mt. Vernon. I admitted to him I'm totally bored with this campaign, and he confessed the same. Just think, we have five months to go before any-thing major happens! My friend and I are both serious political junkies. He falls toward the liberal side with a capital "L" and I'm conser-vative with a slight lean toward the liberal side. Okay, a very slight lean :-) But enough of the humor.

We both admitted we're sick of the same ole, same ole name calling, and we're both ready for both parties to get on to the serious issues with real solutions.

But let's look at the most recent numbers. As of late last week, on the GOP side Trump remains number one with Dr. Ben Carson running neck and neck in Iowa. I have to admit Dr. Carson has been running an impressive cam-paign in Iowa. But the biggest development is he's building support from Iowa's social conservative base. In the number three spot is Marco Rubio, in fourth is Jeb Bush and, number ๏ฟฝ ve is Ted Cruz.

I really think before long we will start seeing a few of the 17 GOP candidates fall away. My prediction: Among the first few will be Rick Perry, Lindsey Graham and of course George Pataki and Jim Gilmore. So where is Carly Fiorina? She's coming in number 6!

On to the Democrat side. Nothing much changes. Even though most don't trust her, Hillary Clinton is still in the lead! For me that's mind boggling, but look at the alternatives. Other than Bernie Sanders, a 73-year-old socialist, there aren't any. Frankly, I'll take Bernie over Hillary. And speaking of Hillary, I keep hearing from a number of Democrats that the email scandal isn't a big deal, which I disagree with. ๏ฟฝ is is a woman that should be in jail, in my opinion. But let's look at the mistakes. To start with, Ms. Clinton made a bunch of mistakes just in the interaction with the media, especially during a recent press conference. Ac-cording to the Washington Post below is a list of what she did wrong:

#1) She sounds like a lawyer (but she is a lawyer). Her ๏ฟฝ rst response when she ๏ฟฝ rst addressed the existence of the private server back in

March was to insist that she is in no legal jeopardy.

#2) She cast the whole thing as normal and every-day. But keep in mind, Clinton was the ๏ฟฝ rst Secre-tary of State in history to exclusively use a private email address and server while on the job. And she's running for President in 2016. Only a Clinton would be so bold.

#3) She's dismissive. Yes, Ed Henry the reporter inter-rupted her. From the start she was highly annoyed with his line of questions and was unable to mask that fact. In other words, that look โ€” Who do you think you are? How dare you ask that of me!

#4) She's sarcastic. A perfect example is Clinton's response to whether she "wiped" the server "like with a cloth or something," dem-onstrating a lack of techno-logical know how. I, for one, don't mind sarcasm unless it's tied to an issue that many people view as serious.

#5) (๏ฟฝ e big one.) She's wrong! Especially, when leaving the press conference, she responded, "Nobody talks to me about it other than you guys," referring to the press. Guess what, 65% of those polled said Clinton did something wrong by using a private email server during here time as Secretary of State!

So for those of you sup-porting Clinton, WAKE UP! She's an accident waiting to happen!

๏ฟฝ e email below is from a reader of Politically Speaking.

When are the candidates going to start addressing the real problems in this country? ๏ฟฝ e answer is that the politi-cians never will. Neither party wishes to make any changes but both want to be in o๏ฟฝ ce so they can share in all the bribes โ€” oops, con-tributions โ€” big business gives them. They have a cushy part time job that makes them millionaires a๏ฟฝ er a short time and neither party wants that to change. ๏ฟฝ ey have little knowledge or understanding of what it takes to turn this country around. You know we no longer have a country that is of the people, for the people, and by the people. ๏ฟฝ at went away a long time ago. ๏ฟฝ ey talk a good talk but they don't walk a good walk nor will they ever. You have to want to change something ๏ฟฝ rst and they have no inten-

tion of doing anything. We need someone who loves this country and who knows what needs to be done and how to do it and you won't ๏ฟฝ nd any politician that ๏ฟฝ ts that description. Trump has an agenda that is a good start but the question is, is he the one that could do it! Isn't it strange however, that the three leading candidates for the republican nomination are not politicians but from the business world? ๏ฟฝ e polls show the people are fed up with the current government so there will never be a better time to make some major changes in Washington. Un-fortunately, most Americans are not aware of the crisis facing our country today and for whatever the reason, busy, family, fun times, etc. they are ignorant of these facts. But they will vote because it is civic duty and many will vote for their party regardless or because they are living on entitlements; at least 140 million are receiv-ing entitlements as of now. Aren't those politicians smart? If only there was some way to make them aware of all this before the next elections, then maybe we could get the changes that need to be made to save America.

โ€”Larry McCaskey

And to the individual that sent me the email: What did Presidents Hoover, Truman, and Eisenhower have in common? It was deportation of illegals. ๏ฟฝ e email said:

Harry Truman deported over two million illegal aliens a๏ฟฝ er WWII. In 1954 Ike deported 13 million Mexicans. And back during the great depression Hoover ordered the deportation of all illegal immigrants in order to make jobs for Americans.

๏ฟฝ e truth is all three of these Presidents wrestled with a rising tide of illegal immigration, but the facts are:

Hoover did not use im-migration policy to "create jobs" and never "ordered the deportations of all illegal aliens." During his four-year presidency, roughly 121,000 persons were o๏ฟฝ cially de-ported or induced to leave through threat of deporta-tion.

Truman did not try to "create jobs for returning veterans" by ordering depor-tations. In fact, he signed legislation protecting the

rights of Mexican migrant laborers recruited legally to help harvest U.S. crops, and was unable to win congres-sional approval of measures to crack down on employers of illegal immigrants. During his nearly eight years in o๏ฟฝ ce, about 3.4 million were deported or le๏ฟฝ "voluntarily" under threat of deportation.

Eisenhower did not deport 13 million Mexicans. Only one-tenth that number was ever claimed by the federal o๏ฟฝ cials in charge of "Operation Wetback," and even that ๏ฟฝ gure is criticized as in๏ฟฝ ated by guesswork. Of-๏ฟฝ cially, just over 2.1 million were recorded as having been deported or having departed under threat of deportation.

And last but certainly not least, addressing the war on police, I truly believe most o๏ฟฝ cers go into law enforce-ment because they care, and these senseless recent murders of police o๏ฟฝ cers are done by low life cowards.

Police o๏ฟฝ cers have more than one name. ๏ฟฝ e other names are Daddy, husband, son, grandfather, grandson, granddaughter, uncle, brother, sister and friend. ๏ฟฝ ey are serving communi-ties because they are devoted. And many have devoted their lives to protect, serve and make communities safer for those of us that are honest. But unfortunately, today among the 800,000 federal, state and local police

o๏ฟฝ cers many are question-ing their career choice. I, for one, have chosen to stand up against the anti-cop gibber-ish spewing from those who take their freedoms for granted.

What condition would this country be in if it weren't for law enforcement? ๏ฟฝ is anti-cop climate has to stop!

Until next week.

Warm Weather DessertsIt sounds like during the next two weeks Southern Illinois will be returning to

summer weather, so why not enjoy the season's last ๏ฟฝ ing with warm weather desserts. Tart limes add tropical ๏ฟฝ avor to a cool, creamy pie, and ice cream lovers will enjoy the peach milk shake recipe below. And while you're at it, there's cold co๏ฟฝ ee punch: It's thick, rich and sweet enough for desert.

Peach Milk Shake1 ยฝ cups chopped fresh ripe peaches 1 cup milk1 T. confectioners' sugar 1ยฝ cups vanilla or peach ice cream

Combine peaches and confectioners' sugar; toss gently. Refrigerate 1 to 6 hours. Combine peaches, milk, and ice cream in container of electric blender; process until smooth. Yield: about 4 cups.

Cold Co๏ฟฝ ee Punch2 quarts hot strong brewed co๏ฟฝ ee 1 pint vanilla ice cream, so๏ฟฝ ened1/3 cup confectioners' sugar 1 pint chocolate ice cream, so๏ฟฝ ened2 cups milk 1ยฝ cups heavy cream, whipped2 tsp. vanilla extract Ground cinnamon

Combine co๏ฟฝ ee and confectioners' sugar, stirring until sugar dissolves. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Combine cold co๏ฟฝ ee mixture, milk, and vanilla; mix well. Scoop ice cream into a large punch bowl. Pour co๏ฟฝ ee mixture over ice cream, stirring gently. Top with dollops of whipped cream; sprinkle with cinnamon. Yield: about 16 cups.

Key Lime Pie4 egg yolks 2 cups heavy cream1/2 cup key lime juice 1/4 cup si๏ฟฝ ed confectioners' sugar1 (14 oz.) can sweetened Single-Crust Pie Pastry condensed milk

Preheat oven to 450หšF. Line a 9-inch pie plate with pastry; trim and ๏ฟฝ ute edges. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool completely. Beat egg yolks with an electric mixer on medium speed until thick and lemon-colored. Heat juice in a saucepan over medium heat until thoroughly heated (about 160หšF on a candy thermometer). Gradually stir about one fourth of hot lime juice into yolks; add yolks to remaining hot lime juice in saucepan, stirring constantly. Cook 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and let cool. Add sweetened condensed milk, stirring until mixture becomes thick. Spoon ๏ฟฝ lling into pie pastry, spreading evenly. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Beat cream with an electric mixer at high speed until foamy. Gradually add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until sti๏ฟฝ peaks form. Spoon whipped cream onto chilled pie. Refrigerate until serving time. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Lemon Angel Food Cake12 egg whites 1 cup si๏ฟฝ ed cake ๏ฟฝ our1ยผ tsp. cream of tartar 1 tsp. lemon extractPinch of salt 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract1ยฝ cups sugar

Preheat oven to 350ยฐ F. Beat egg whites with an electric mixer on high speed until foamy. Add cream of tartar and salt; beat until so๏ฟฝ peaks form. Add sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating until sti๏ฟฝ peaks form. Sprinkle ๏ฟฝ our over egg-white mixture, 1/4 cup at a time, folding in carefully each time. Fold in ๏ฟฝ avorings. Pour batter into an ungreased 10-inch tube pan, spreading evenly. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Remove cake from oven and immediately invert pan; let cool at least 1 hour. Remove cake from pan. Yield: one 10-inch cake.

In๏ฟฝ uential local attorney Bill J. Milner announced Tuesday that he is seeking the Republican nomination for the office of Marion County State's Attorney.

"As an attorney who works in this court house I see ๏ฟฝ rst-hand where we can improve how crime is handled in Marion County," states Milner. "As a person who lives in this county and as a person who has pretty much his whole family living in this county, it's important to me that we make those improvements and build a safer commu-nity for all our families."

As Stateโ€™s Attorney Milner says he would work closely with state, local and

federal law enforcement to become more e๏ฟฝ ective and more aggressive in attack-ing the drug trade in Marion County.

โ€œI will work as a team with law enforcement to get this job done, and I will take advantage of any state and federal assistance avail-able to help us get that job done while giving our local taxpayers a break,โ€ Milner explained.

Regarding synthetic drugs, Milner says he sees shortcomings in laws passed recently, and would work with local lawmakers to amend those laws and improve prosecution rates.

A life-long resident of Marion County, Milner has

more than 29 years experi-ence as a trial lawyer, having tried criminal and civil cases in both the state and federal courts.

Milner has handled appeals cases before the Illinois Appellate Court and even before the Illinois Supreme Court.

A member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, Order of Barristers and Illinois State Bar Association, Milner earned his Law Degree from the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale Law School, a๏ฟฝ er earning his Undergraduate Degree in Political Science from S o u t h e r n I l l i n o i s University-Edwardsville.

Do you feel like your house could use more natural light to brighten and warm your favorite spaces? Patio doors o๏ฟฝ er unobstructed views that flood your home with natural light and provide convenient access to the outside.

Whether you're replac-ing an old door or installing one for the ๏ฟฝ rst time, a new patio door like those avail-able from Pella can add light and comfort to any room. With a variety of styles available, follow these four simple steps to choos-ing the right patio door for your home:

๏ฟฝ ink About Your Lifestyle And BudgetKeep the people, places

and things in your life in

mind as you shop for a new door. Need to keep blinds and shades out of reach of children and/or pets? What's the size of the room? Do you live in a par-ticularly hot, humid or cold climate?

Answers to these ques-tions, as well as knowing your set budget, will help you narrow down your choices.

Select A Style You'll be able to choose

from a variety of styles, including hinged, French an d s l i d i n g d o or s . Manufacturers like Pella, o๏ฟฝ er an online design tool letting you play with di๏ฟฝ er-ent styles and ๏ฟฝ nishes.

Hinged and French wood patio doors add a classic, elegant look and work well in more spacious rooms where they don't run the risk of bumping into any furniture or walls when open. You can choose from two doors that swing open from the middle, one movable with one fixed door or a single hinged door.

Since they don't swing open, sliding patio doors require less floor space. This allows you to place furniture nearby or bright-en up the smaller rooms in your home.

Choose A Material Type It's important to con-

sider the material type of your door based on your climate, the style of your home and your personal preference. Patio doors can come in three di๏ฟฝ erent ma-terial types:

โ€ข Wood creates a warm, natural look and can be stained or painted to com-plement most home styles and decor.

โ€ข Fiberglass is the most durable option and is well suited for extreme heat and cold climates while also providing the look of a painted wood door.

โ€ข Vinyl offers added energy efficiency, low-maintenance and a๏ฟฝ ord-able quality.

Select AdditionalFeatures And OptionsYou can personalize your

patio door with added fea-tures to create more style and function. Try out dif-ferent stains and ๏ฟฝ nishes, add stylish nickel hardware, or select a patio door with blinds, shades or grilles tucked between the panes of glass.

If you're still not sure which one to choose, don't worry - an expert, such as a Pella representative can help match you with the right one. Visit Pella Windows and Doors on Houzz for more design in-spiration or Pella.com to an in-home consultation. (BPT)

You only get one chance to make a ๏ฟฝ rst impression and that ๏ฟฝ rst statement for your home begins with y o u r f r o n t d o o r . Fortunately, there are a few simple projects to help welcome your family and friends into your home with style.

Start Fresh WithA New Door

Sometimes the simplest answer is to begin with a clean slate and replace your front door. From single doors to double-door options, those accented with decorative glass or transoms and sidelights, it's easy to ๏ฟฝ nd one that ๏ฟฝ ts your budget and your style. Once you have a look, pick a material such as wood, ๏ฟฝ berglass or steel. Don't forget to look for an ENERGY STAR quali๏ฟฝ ed option to help keep your home comfortable.

Pick A Standout Color For Your Front Door Sticking with your

current door? A fresh coat of paint will do wonders. Try a bold color to bright-en a neutral color scheme. Pick a color that coordi-nates with your home's exterior with a pop of con-trast to add eye appeal.

Update YourHardware

Why stop with a fresh coat of paint? Refresh old doors with new hardware. Choose handles and door-knockers that complement your home's exterior design. Pella o๏ฟฝ ers hard-ware in a variety of fin-ishes to instantly upgrade exterior doors.

Replace BrokenOr Damaged Items

Replace broken light ๏ฟฝ xtures, burned out bulbs and worn out weather-

stripping on exterior doors. Pitch that faded wreath, worn out mat and dead plants. Instead add a bright new welcome mat and eye-catching seasonal decora-tions.

Lay A New PathFlagstone, gravel or

pavers - any of these ma-terials can be used to create a new, inviting walkway in a weekend or less.

Illuminate Your Walkway

Make it easy for others to see the way to your front door at night. Transform and illuminate walkways with easy-to-install solar lights. Stake them in the ground positioned so solar cells get enough southern exposure for sunlight to recharge during the day.

Trim Bushes, Create Great Container

Gardens Landscaping should

accent your home, not dominate it. Keep bushes below the bottom sill of your windows to improve your view. Trim or replace overgrown shrubs and trees. Keep plant material trimmed several feet away from your home to mini-mize damage from wind or insects. Fill decorative con-tainers with plants that accent your home's color scheme, front door and landscape design.

Visit Pella on Pinterest and Houzz for more design inspiration and Pella.com to connect with your local Pella representative for ideas on how to transform the look and comfort of your home inside and out. (BPT)

Fall is a great time to aerate the lawn. Whether you do it yourself or hire a lawn care professional to do it for you, aeration at least once per year provides a number of bene๏ฟฝ ts to your lawn, say experts.

๏ฟฝ e main bene๏ฟฝ t is to relieve compaction and increase pore space, which promotes gas exchange and microbial activity in the soil and creates a better, more supportive environment for lawn health and vitality.

Aeration also promotes better soil drainage, which helps keep disease at bay and allows more water to percolate into the soil from rain or irrigation, meaning less runo๏ฟฝ and more water getting where it needs to go.

โ€œIdeal aeration timing depends on turf type and geography,โ€ says Lloyd Von Schel iha of Exmark Manufacturing, a manufac-turer of turf care equip-ment. โ€œBut annual aeration provides valuable agro-nomic bene๏ฟฝ ts to virtually any turfgrass.โ€

With that in mind, here are some tips from the experts at Exmark to get the most bene๏ฟฝ ts from aera-tion:

TimingIdeally, aeration should

take place during times of active growth to help with recovery. Avoid aeration during times of heat stress or times preceding dor-mancy. Itโ€™s typically best to aerate cool season grasses in the spring or fall, while with warm season grasses, itโ€™s best to aerate in late spring or early fall.

WHY YOU SHOULD AERATE YOUR LAWN THIS FALL

Proper EquipmentUse gear that meets the

needs of your lawn. A 30-inch stand-on aerator makes quick work of even large properties with the ability to easily maneuver around landscape features.

Follow-UpA๏ฟฝ er aeration, itโ€™s a good

idea to water the lawn, as well as a good time to apply fertilizer or overseed if needed. Be careful not to apply a pre-emergent if you plan to overseed, however, as it will prevent the new seed from growing.

Donโ€™t let this important, but o๏ฟฝ en overlooked lawn care task escape your atten-tion this season. At the ideal time for your lawn, either take it upon yourself or hire a professional to give your grass a better chance at thriving.

Home improvement projects tend to be costly. Because of the considerable ๏ฟฝ nancial investment home-owners must make when improving their homes, itโ€™s important to ๏ฟฝ nd a contrac-tor you can trust and feel comfortable with.

๏ฟฝ e vast majority of pro-fessional contractors are trustworthy and willing to work with homeowners to help them design the homes of their dreams. But there are still some tips home-owners can keep in mind as they begin their search for a contractor.

Work Only With Licensed ContractorsLicensed contractors

have been veri๏ฟฝ ed as le-gitimate by your local gov-erning body, removing much of the fears home-owners have with regard to ๏ฟฝ nding trustworthy con-tractors. Unlicensed con-tractors may not be insured or bonded, and their esti-

mates may be lower than their licensed competitorsโ€™ because they do not con-tribute to unemployment. Licensed contractors o๏ฟฝ en are subjected to criminal background checks as well, calming homeownersโ€™ fears about inviting strangers into their homes.

Get WrittenEstimates

Before hiring a particular ๏ฟฝ rm, get written estimates from several contractors. Some contractors will charge fees for the estimate, but they must inform you of those fees before the estimates are provided. Compare esti-mates so you can get a better grasp of how much your project will cost. While cost is important, try to avoid choosing a contractor based on cost alone, as a good rapport with a contractor who may be more expensive might make spending a little more money worth it.

Ask ForRecommendations

Word-of-mouth is great when looking for contrac-tors. O๏ฟฝ entimes, a contrac-torโ€™s best friends are his past clients. Ask friends or neighbors for recommen-dations on local contrac-tors, inquiring about prices as well as each particular contractorโ€™s demeanor and openness to suggestions. Contact your local O๏ฟฝ ce of Consumer Affairs to check each contractorโ€™s complaint history.

Make Sure ๏ฟฝ e Contract Is Speci๏ฟฝ c

When you choose a con-tractor, make sure the con-tract he or she provides is very specific, going into great detail about the spe-ci๏ฟฝ cs of the project. ๏ฟฝ is contract should spell out the materials and equip-ment that will be used, as well as the ๏ฟฝ nal cost of the project, the payment sched-ules while the project is

ongoing and the work schedule.

Keep Track Of All Paperwork And Pay By

CheckOnce you sign the con-

tract, create a folder where you can store all paper-work. Scan each document so you can store them on your computer as well. When payments must be made, never pay in cash. Pay by check and do not pay for the entirety of the project upfront, opting instead to pay at predeter-mined intervals spelled out in your contract.

Nerves o๏ฟฝ en come into play when hiring a home contractor, but homeown-ers who take a careful ap-proach to the hiring process will likely end up hiring a trustworthy contractor who does great work.

TIPS TO FINDING THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR

Overeating Puppy Isnโ€™t So Cute

D E A R P A W โ€™ S CORNER: I watched a โ€œcuteโ€ commercial today where a toddler sneakily pours dog food on the ๏ฟฝ oor for the family puppy to eat. I think it was really irre-sponsible of the dog food company to show that without noting the risks to dogs that overeat, particu-larly puppies. Maybe a better commercial would be the mom rushing the dog to the veterinarian to make sure he doesnโ€™t die of bloat. Why would the company present this as cute? โ€” Shocked in Syracuse, New York

DEAR SHOCKED: You donโ€™t need me to answer why the pet food company presented the commercial

in that way. Cute sells, right?

Because youโ€™re con-cerned about the way the situation is presented, with no apparent consequenc-es for the puppy (bloat is a possible risk for dogs that eat a large amount of food in one sitting), you can contact the company either through its website or in writing.

Now, what if that situa-tion happened in real life? Your toddler gets into the dog food and sits there happily feeding the family pet, for who knows how long before you discover them.

Youโ€™ll need to monitor the dog closely. Bloat, known clinically as GDV (gastric dilatation-volvu-lus), happens when a dogโ€™s stomach enlarges, twists and puts pressure on sur-rounding organs. Itโ€™s a very serious condition that can cause death in just hours. Overeating is one possible cause of bloat.

If your dogโ€™s stomach is distended, it tries to belch

or vomit without success, itโ€™s weak, panting and salivating, rush it to the vet.

If your pet shows no

symptoms but youโ€™re con-cerned, contact the vet for instructions.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cupid is strong in the Aries aspect this week, with the cherub opening romantic possibilities for single Lambs, and strengthening ties โ€˜twixt loving pairs already in a caring relationship.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your dramatic ๏ฟฝ air might make things more interesting as you recount an event to your colleagues. But be careful not to exaggerate reality to the point that facts and fancy combine to form ๏ฟฝ c-tion.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You love to talk, and this week you should get lots of chances to share your thoughts with people who will not only pay attention to what you have to say, but will want to hear more.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) ๏ฟฝ e pattern of recent changes could begin to shi๏ฟฝ from mostly workplace-related events to more personal matters. Continue to keep an open mind as you prepare to deal with them.LEO (July 23 to August 22) An oppor-tunity for work-related travel could be just what the Terri๏ฟฝ c Tabby needs to get a new perspective on a balky situ-ation. ๏ฟฝ e trip also could prove to be personally rewarding.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might want to suggest resolving an old disagreement before it can af-fect a matter expected to come up for discussion. Itโ€™s always best to start with a clean slate.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) ๏ฟฝ e week favors combining dollops of

creativity and practicality to work out both professional and personal prob-lems. A longtime friend could have something of note to suggest.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprising facts could come to light if you decide to probe deeper into an โ€œopportunityโ€ than you might usually do. What youโ€™ll learn could determine what youโ€™ll earn.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone close to you might seek your counsel. Hear him/her out, but hold the line at giving actual advice until you get credible answers to all your questions.CAPRICORN (December 22 to Janu-ary 19) What seems to be an over-whelming workplace project can be dealt with quite well if you handle one category at a time. ๏ฟฝ ings will soon begin to fall into place.AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru-ary 18) A personal matter might need more of your time than you had ex-pected. Try to prioritize between your many outside commitments and your domestic responsibilities. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A developing situation still needs more time to grow, and more time to study before you can plunge in and make some attention-getting waves. Patience is best for wise Pisceans.BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gi๏ฟฝ for organization that would make you a ๏ฟฝ ne archivist. (Are you listening out there, Library of Congress?)

โ€ข It was 20th-century Hungarian author and psychiatrist Thomas Szasz who made the fol-lowing sage observation: "๏ฟฝ e greatest analgesic, sopori๏ฟฝ c, stimulant, tran-quilizer, narcotic, and to some extent even antibi-otic โ€” in short, the closest thing to a genuine panacea known to medical science โ€” is work."

โ€ข Th e story that's been adapted to film more

than any other is the fairy tale "Cinderella."

โ€ข While it's true that paying to use transporta-tion routes is nothing new, you might be sur-prised to learn the extent of some early pay-for-travel routes. In England in the early 1800s, there already were 30,000 miles of toll roads โ€” not to mention 8,000 toll gates.

โ€ข During World War II, money was smuggled into German POW

camps using Monopoly games โ€” the real stu๏ฟฝ was stashed in among the fake cash.

โ€ข Twerking may be a modern phenomenon, but in the 16th century, it was not unusual for a gentleman to be caught twirking (with an "i," not an "e") in public. Of course, twirling the hairs of one's mustache gener-ally didn't raise an eyebrow in polite society.

โ€ข If you see a group of ducks in the water, you can call them, collec-tively, a "paddling" of ducks. In the air, however, the correct col-lective term is a "team."

โ€ข Before he became famous in his epony-mous sitcom, Jerry

Seinfeld appeared on the TV show "Benson" โ€” he played the governor's speechwriter. He didn't last long, though; he was ๏ฟฝ red a๏ฟฝ er just three epi-sodes.

***๏ฟฝ ought for the Day:

"By the age of 6 the average child will have completed the basic American education. ... From television, the child will have learned how to pick a lock, commit a fairly elaborate bank holdup, prevent wetness all day long, get the laundry twice as white, and kill people with a variety of sophisticated armaments."
