Mimi Hawkins was named the 2015 Centralia Business and Professional Woman of the year. Mimi joined the long list of past women that have received this honor — all who so generously volunteered their time and e orts to serving others.

Mimi took it upon herself to be the coordina-tor of the Thanksgiving dinner for the less fortu-nate and lonely. She lined up volunteers to make the food, deliver the meals and work the serving lines

along side herself. The reward was the hugs and smiles from the people that were served.

Other projects are the Special Olympics, Murray Center — she worked tire-lessly to help keep Murray open and has participated in local fund raising events for the Humane Society. She's a key player in ABATE and many others. The above are just a few of the organizations that have been blessed to have Mimi Hawkins' care! Congratula-tions, Mimi.

CookingWith Lizzie

Warm, comforting, honest-to-goodness breakfast cakes and pastries seem almost to spill forth from the country kitchen, lling the house with the smell of baking: Fresh dough, cinnamon and brown sugar, and of course, cooked fruit. Some of my favorite fall recipes are below.

Walnut Sour Cream Co eecake1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, 2 large eggs so ened 1 tsp. baking powder2/3 cup sugar 1 tsp. baking soda 2 cups all-purpose our 1 tsp. vanilla extract1 cup sour cream CRUMB TOPPING:1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup sugar1 tsp. ground cinnamon

Prepare Crumb Topping: In small bowl, combine walnuts, cinnamon and sugar. Set aside. Heat the oven to 350°F. Grease 13"x9" baking pan. In large bowl, with electric mixer at medium speed, cream butter and 2/3 cup sugar until light and u y. Reduce speed to low and gradually beat in our, sour cream, eggs, baking powder, soda and vanilla. With mixer at medium speed, beat batter until light and u y, occasionally scraping side of bowl with rubber spatula. Spread half the batter in greased pan. Sprinkle with half the crumb topping. Spoon dollops of remaining batter on top; carefully spread to an even layer. Sprinkle top with remaining crumb topping. Bake co ee cake 25 to 30 minutes, or until cake tester comes out clean. Cool cake completely in pan on wire rack. To serve, cut cake into squares. Makes about 12 servings.

Grilled Sticky Buns1 cup milk 1 large egg1/2 cup granulated sugar 2/3 cup rmly packed light-brown sugar1 tsp. salt 1½ tsp. ground cinnamon1 package active dry yeast 1/2 cup light corn syrup1/2 cup warm water (105° to 115°F) 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans5¼ cups all-purpose our 3/4 cup dark seedless raisins1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, Butter or margarine to grill buns so ened In 1-quart saucepan, heat milk until bubbles form around side of pan. Remove from heat. Stir

6 T. granulated sugar, and salt into milk. Cool to warm. In small bowl, sprinkle yeast over water. Stir and set aside to so en, about 5 minutes. In large bowl, combine 5 cups our, warm milk mixture, yeast mixture, 1/4 cup so ened butter and egg. Stir with wooden spoon until so dough forms. Sprinkle board or work surface with remaining 1/4 cup our. Turn dough out and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Lightly oil large bowl. Place dough in bowl, turning to bring oiled side up. Cover with clean cloth and let rise in warm place, away from dra s, until double in size, about 40 minutes. Meanwhile, in small bowl, combine 3 T. remaining so ened butter, brown sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and corn syrup. Divide mixture among fourteen 10-oz. (4½" wide) custard cups. Combine nuts and 1/2 cup raisins and sprinkle evenly among cups. Stir remaining 1 tsp. cinnamon into remaining 2 T. sugar and set aside. Divide dough in half. On lightly oured surface, roll out one half to a 16"x10" rectangle. Spread this dough with half the remaining butter; sprinkle with half the cinnamon-sugar mixture and 2 T. raisins. Starting from one short side, roll dough up jelly-roll style, pinching to seal outside edge. Cut roll into 7 slices. Place one slice in each prepared cup. Repeat with other half of dough. Cover buns with clean cloth and let rise again until double in size, 50 to 60 minutes. Heat oven to 350°F. Set custard cups on baking sheets. Bake buns 25 minutes, or until they are nicely browned. Immediately invert them onto lightly oiled tray. Cool completely. Just before serving, split buns in half horizontally. In large skillet, griddle, or sandwich grill, melt 1 tsp. butter. Place buns, 4 halves at a time, cut sides down, in skillet. Weight buns with oiled sandwich press or heat proof plate. Grill until golden brown. Repeat until all buns have been grilled, adding butter as necessary. Serve immediately. Makes 14 buns.

Hurry-up Caramel Buns1 (1 lb.) loaf frozen bread dough 1/4 cup water1 cup rmly packed light-brown sugar 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts1/2 cup (1 stick) plus 3 T. butter 2 T. granulated sugar or margarine, so ened 1½ tsp. ground cinnamon

Allow frozen bread dough to thaw following package directions. To make buns' sticky topping, combine brown sugar, 1/2 cup butter, and water in 1-quart saucepan. Heat to boiling over medium heat and allow to boil 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Reduce heat slightly if sugar syrup boils up too high. Pour hot syrup into 10" round baking pan. Sprinkle 1/2 cup nuts evenly over syrup. On lightly oured surface, roll dough out to 14"x 9" rectangle. Spread with remaining 3 T. butter. In cup, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle over buttered dough. Sprinkle dough with remaining 1/2 cup nuts. Starting from one long side, roll dough up, jelly-roll style, pinching to seal outside edge. Cut roll into 12 slices and arrange these evenly over topping in pan. (Do not worry about small gaps between rolls.) Cover buns with clean cloth. Let rise in warm place, away from dra s, until double in size, 40 to 60 minutes. Heat oven to 350°F. Bake buns 30 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes, then invert onto platter. Makes 1 dozen.

Last Tuesday evening the spotlight was on the Democrats. CNN hosted the rst Presidential Democratic Debate. e stage was set with only ve candidates. e questions came from everyday Americans like you and me across the country while Lincoln Chafee, Hillary Clinton, Martin O'Malley, Bernie Sanders and Jim Webb took to the stage. After the national anthem they were o and running. With Hillary front and center, each candidate introduced themselves start-ing with Chafee (the metric man) with 30 years of public service. Next up Jim Webb who is a Vietnam veteran, a senator, a father and a husband. O'Malley, a life-long Democrat with 15 years as an executive leader and former mayor of Baltimore, Maryland.

Sanders, an admitted so-cialist, stressed the need for climate change and also pointed out our country has more people in jail than any other country in the world. His motto: "Let's take back our government" — a perfect opportunity for him to say Hillary Clinton is part of the current big government regime.

Then it was Clinton's turn. She said she was proud to serve as rst lady and of course talked about being a grandmother of a 1 year old.

The questions started with Hillary's ip ops, es-pecially addressing TPP, a trade agreement that she said, "would be the gold standard" and now she's against it. She took a stab at answering but never did.

By the end of the evening my mind had not changed about Hillary. If you want more of the same, she's your girl, and when she pointed out we had handled Libya well, it was a dead give away she doesn't have a clue.

As per Sanders, second in the Democratic current polls, his points were we should rob from the rich (kill that goose that lays the golden egg) and give to the

poor. Yay! More free phones! And to round it up he was a conscientious objector and refused to go to Vietnam, but I expected no more from him!

Frankly, in my opinion credibility is still a huge issue with Hillary. Sanders has, I believe, been honest, but I simply can't agree with his beliefs and I don't see him as presidential material.

As per the rest? They aren't going anywhere except home!

I personally don't like Donald Trump but he could beat anyone of the gang of 5 on the stage last Tuesday evening.

But I'll leave you with a thought. If Joe Biden steps in, we're looking at a com-pletely different story. Rumor has it we'll know soon.

Up next, Obama ip ops on military action in Afghanistan. A major hap-pening last week — a ip op I agree with — at this time the U.S. has 9,800 troops in Afghanistan. ey will remain through 2016. A er that 5,500 will be there into 2017.

is is a major shi in Obama's policy to bring all troops home by the end of 2016 with only a small em-bassy-based force left behind. Is he doing the right thing? All you have to do is remember the premature withdrawal of troops in Iraq and look what followed.

Going back to the Democratic Presidential candidates... I found it inter-esting that last Thursday, leading Democratic candi-dates were silent about Obama's decision and that includes Hillary Clinton who served as Obama's Secretary of State.

And last but not least, looking back, I remember a big to-do when V.P. Dick Cheney accidentally shot a friend while dove hunting. You couldn't nd a newspa-per, radio station or TV station that didn't beat it to

death.So with the current gun-

hostile administration we have in the White House, I would think it would be headline news that one of Barack Obama's then White House staffers Barvetta Singletary was arrested a er allegedly ring a gun at her cop boyfriend during a do-mestic dispute.

Now, granted, Barvetta Singletary, a lower level White House sta er, is no VP, so wouldn't grab as many headlines, but I don't recall reading or hearing about this late August inci-dent at all.

Either way, Ms. Singletary won't help advance her (former) boss's crusade against gun violence. It didn't take long for her to resign her $125,000 a year job last month.

With the chummy bedfel-lows the current administra-tion and the major liberal news outlets have become over the years, maybe I shouldn't be surprised which gun-related incident got more news coverage. e weapon of choice was a .40 caliber Glock 23 service weapon.

A closing thought: looking back at both the Republican and Democratic debates, I would have liked to hear just one candidate in their opening remarks about who they are say "I'm a Christian." Looking at the corruption in the political arena — the mass shootings, some openly targeting Christians, it's apparent to me Christianity is under siege in America and the breakdown of the American Family is one of the biggest problems!

Until next week!

“Washington is broken and a er 20 years in o ce our representative has become part of the problem. I have the energy, ideas, and a proven track record as a reformer in Il-linois to go to DC and make a difference” said McCarter. Saying it’s time for new leadership to restore, renew and recap-ture the bright promise of America, State Senator Kyle McCarter of Lebanon announced Wednesday his intention to run for the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the 15th Dis-trict of Illinois.

“ is is a very conserva-tive district that believes we should protect life; that believes in the Second Amendment, and believes in limited government and free market principles of economic opportunity for all,” said McCarter. “Ronald Reagan described the heart of American conservatism as, ‘ e common sense and common decency of ordi-nary men and women, working out their own lives in their own way.’ at’s also the heart of the 15th District.”

McCarter, who has served in the Illinois Senate since 2009, said the promise of America has been un-dermined in recent years by policies and practices that ght against and un-dermine traditional values. He said it’s time to turn around Washington.

“What we have wit-nessed in recent years is not how our country was de-signed to work,” said Mc-Carter. “The burdens of government have grown¸ in spite of the opposition by a majority of Americans. The federal government has imposed thousands of new rules and regulations, and billions of dollars in new taxes. It has over-stepped its bounds and has

done so without our consent. Of all the places in Illinois, the place that should have the loudest, strongest voice in Wash-ington is the 15th District, but I don’t see that happen-ing. Respectively, 20 years is enough. It’s time that someone like myself step up and really defend the people of this district.”

McCarter likened the challenging of a long-time incumbent in the race to David versus Goliath, but he said a tough campaign is worth the struggle because the end result will be good for families and communities, and good for bus iness es and t he economy.

“If the last 8 years have showed us anything, it’s showed us we need new blood in Washington,” said McCarter. “We need to ‘Turnaround Washington.’ We need people who think differently, who haven’t given up on the traditional American principles and qualities that made our nation great. We need leaders with energy who

are not in Washington to make a career of the Capital, but who are working to improve the lives of citizens today, and to secure a bright, promis-ing and hopeful future for generations to come.”

McCarter said Freedom and Liberty for today and tomorrow includes vigi-lance and perseverance.

“Unlike what has been happening in recent years, I refuse to compromise on Freedom and Liberty, said McCarter. “We need to return to the traditional American principles that are the bedrock foundation upon which our nation was built.”

McCarter said the na-tion’s founding documents give the people unique power and authority because the Freedom and Liberty the documents detail are recognized as coming from the “Creator.” McCarter said rights come

from God; they are not given to us by the govern-ment, which means the people are in charge of their destiny, not a group of individuals in Washing-ton D.C.

“If you feel you have been ignored by Washing-ton; if you feel no one has been ghting for you or will give voice to your con-cerns and hopes for the future, then walk with me and run with me to win this race,” said McCarter.

Illinois’ 15th Congres-sional District is comprised of all or parts of 33 coun-ties: Bond, Champaign, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Edwards, E ngham, Fayette, Ford, Ga l lat in , Hami lton , Hardin, Jasper, Johnson, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Massac, Moultrie, Pope, Richland, Saline, She lby, Ve r m i l l i on , Wabash, Washington, Wayne and White.

For the Glory of God (Part 2)

One of the greatest miracles of Jesus’ earthly ministry was the raising of his friend Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb. Why, after hearing of Lazarus’ sickness, did Jesus wait two more days before going to him? Jesus gave us the answer, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorifi ed through it. (John 11:4) God is worthy of all glory and honor. Followers of Christ are to live to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14) Jesus taught us to conclude the Lord’s Prayer with this phrase, “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (Matthew 6:13)

In part 1 we looked at four ways to bring glory to God found in John 11. In part 2 we are looking at four more ways to bring glory to God in John 11.

BEING A FRIEND OF GOD BRINGS GLORY TO GOD. “These things he said, and after that he said to them, ‘Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.’” (John 11:11) Jesus called Lazarus “friend”. Can you imagine being a friend of the Son of God? In John 15 Jesus called his followers friends. We are told how to

be a friend of Jesus. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are my friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants but friends . . . But I have chosen you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.” (John 15:7-17) As we walk in his love, we are his friends and our lives bring him glory.

BELIEVING AND LIVING IN CHRIST BRINGS GOD GLORY. Martha was troubled, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:21-22) How many times do we ask God why? Jesus assured her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:24-25) Jesus gave us two keys in this verse to bring God glory; to live and believe in Christ. Like Martha, have you confessed your belief in Christ? (John 11:40)

PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT BRINGS GLORY TO GOD. When Jesus saw the grieving people weeping with Mary and Martha, we see his heart, “He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.” (John 11:33) and “Jesus

wept.” (John 11:35-36) We can also pray in the Spirit and bring glory to God. (Romans 8:26-27) In Jesus’ last priestly prayer, He prayed that the Father would be glorifi ed in him and that he would be glorifi ed in his followers. (John 17:6-10) Pray that Jesus would be glorifi ed in and through you.

R E S U R R E C T I O N MIRACLES BRING GLORY TO GOD. Jesus came to the tomb where Lazarus was. He told them to roll the stone away. “He cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come forth!’ And he who had died came out, bound hand and foot . . . Jesus said, ‘Loose him and let him go.’” (John 11:41-44) The raising of Lazarus brought many to faith in Christ. Multitudes are still experiencing resurrection miracles of death unto life, darkness into light. Only Jesus can give life to the dead. Believe God for resurrection miracles that will bring glory to God. Jesus commanded that Lazarus be loosed from his grave clothes. They have the smell of death. It is our part to throw them aside and walk in newness of life. (II Corinthians 5:17)

Andre Crouch wrote and sang, “To God be the glory for the things he has done. With his blood he has saved me. With his power he has raised me. To God be the glory, for the things he has done.”

Give glory to God.

Last week, I ordered my rst Uber ride.

Normally when I take the train to Chicago from Spring eld, I hail a cab to get to my hotel from Union Station.

But last week Chicago cab drivers went on strike – to protest Uber.

is presented an excel-lent opportunity for travel-ers – such as myself – to try something new.

Uber is a ridesharing company. It allows potential passengers to use a smart-phone application to connect with drivers of ve-hicles for hire.

So I downloaded an Uber application to my phone and requested a ride. Moments later a Volkswagen pulled to the curb and I hopped in.

e driver immigrated to the United States from Colombia. During the day, he works as a valet parker and in the evening he drives his family’s car for a couple

more hours to help make ends meet.

As he drove me to my hotel, he showed me pic-tures of his seven kids and gushed over the opportuni-ties he has found in this nation.

And one of those oppor-tunities is Uber. It’s a typical immigrant story: Work hard, compete and make things better for your chil-dren.

But competition is some-thing Chicago’s highly regu-lated taxicab industry is working hard against.

Cab owners purchase or lease pricey medallions issued by City Hall. And they must abide by a slew of regulations, which compa-nies like Uber have managed to avoid

e answer to this unfair situation is creating a level playing eld for the cabbies.

Eliminate the pricey me-dallion licensing system, reduce barriers to the

market and slash regula-tions. is bene ts consum-ers as well as taxi drivers by bringing prices down.

Uber is part of a new economic concept called “the sharing economy.” And it’s here to stay.

For example, a coworker of mine has quit staying in hotels. She logs onto Airbnb and selects a room from among those offered by private homeowners who rent out extra space.

As one might expect, motel owners hate this com-petition. Tough luck. We should encourage, rather than discourage, competi-tion.

In a refreshing free-market move this year, the Illinois General Assembly embraced a portion of the sharing economy by allow-ing for investment crowd-funding of businesses.

Let’s say you want to start a barbershop but don’t want to borrow from a bank to get your business going. You can sell portions of the own-ership of your business over

the internet to nance the endeavor.

It’s sort of like the New York Stock Exchange only for smaller businesses.

As you may have guessed, not all bankers are real keen on this idea. But it has given opportunities for people to start a business who other-wise might not be able to.

Uber, Airbnb and invest-ment crowdfunding are just some of the latest examples of how the marketplace thrives on competition.

When competition doesn’t exist, entrepreneurs will nd a way to create it. And that bene ts customers. at’s the beauty of the free enterprise system.

Register Today!Cat’s Shedding a Hairy Issue

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Chester” has always been a big shedder with his long hair. I’ve pretty much kept up with it by brushing his coat every evening. But lately I’ve noticed a lot more hair deposited on the furniture and carpet, and when I comb him I have to clean out the brush several times. What could be causing this increased shedding? —Cherie K. in Dubuque, Iowa

DEAR CHERIE: To start, make an appoint-ment with Chester’s vet for a complete physical exam. Excess shedding doesn’t always have a concrete explanation, but it can signal a change in his health, especially if it

wasn’t a problem before.Excess shedding can

have a cause as benign as changes in the season — shedding in spring and fall, for example. Or it could be triggered by al-lergies to dust, pollen and molds, which can irritate his skin and make him scratch more.

Skin diseases such as ringworm can be another cause — it’s something the vet will certainly check for, along with ea infestation or other irritants.

Excess shedding also can signal much more serious conditions, such as diabetes or hyperthy-roidism, something that a vet can diagnose. Ahead of the appointment, watch Chester’s behavior: Is he drinking excessively? Does he seem agitated? Is he eating as much as he used to? Write down any-thing that seems unusual and share it with the vet.

If Chester has devel-oped a health condition, the vet can prescribe the right medications and advise you on the best diet

to feed him. If allergies or some unknown irritant is at work, the exam will rule out other possible causes

so you can focus on nding a shedding solu-tion.

QUESTION

OF THE

Peggy Johnson

Itʼs that time of year for scary movies. Which one is your

favorite?

Jessie“Nightmare on Elm Street.”

Giana“Hocus Pocus.”

Jade“Scream.”

Kayla“Jeepers Creepers.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Some ashes of Aries ire might erupt as you confront an unusually bewildering situation. But you should be able to keep your temper under control as you work through it.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) at marriage ‘twixt the arts and practical-ity that Taureans excel at once again highlights your enjoyment of much of the week. However, you need to watch any sudden urge to splurge.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Even with all the plusses apparently out-weighing the minuses, you still might want to defer an important decision to make sure you have all the facts you need.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) One or two problems might threaten to derail otherwise smoothly running situations at work or at home. But a few well-placed words should help get things back on track quickly.LEO (July 23 to August 22) is could be a good time for all you Leos and Leonas in the spotlight to open your generous Lion’s hearts and share the glory with those who helped you ac-complish so much along the way.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might want to get advice from someone who’s been there and knows these situations better than you do, be-fore investing time or money (or both) in a questionable matter.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Be careful how you handle a workplace matter that seems out of place in the

schedule you’ve prepared. Before you act, one way or another, nd out who set it up and why.SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-ber 21) Your entertainment aspect is strong this week. Besides providing a wonderful break from everyday obli-gations, sharing fun times brings you closer to those you care for.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Having a weekend fun fest? Your friend or relative who’s down in the emotional dumps could perk up if you nd a way to include him or her in your plans.CAPRICORN (December 22 to Janu-ary 19) If you’re in one of those “the Goat knows best” periods, you might want to ease up and try listening to what others have to say. You could learn something.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) at new challenge is getting clos-er, and you should be out there now showing facts and gures to potential allies to help persuade them to rally to your support. Good luck.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting a head start on holiday plans could help free up some time later to spend on other projects. Meanwhile, a colleague has some ideas that you might nd worth discussing.BORN THIS WEEK: You are always there for others, and sometimes you need to be reminded that you need to be there for yourself as well.
