Shades of Ali-Frazier

When Muhammad Ali was stripped of his title in 1967 for dodging the Vietnam War dra , he was, without question, the great-est ghter in the world. He had just dismantled Cleveland Williams, Ernie Terrell and Zora Folley — three ghts that stand as clinics, all of them must-sees for any ght fan.

But time has a way of wearing a man down. When Ali was cleared to fight again he had lost nearly four years of legs. His return to the ring saw him dismantle a bloodied Jerry Quarry, stopping him with a vicious cut in just the third round. Waiting in

the wings for Ali was the much-overlooked standing champion: Joe Frazier.

Ali was not yet the peo-ple's champ. His draft dodging, combined with a brash, outspoken demean-or and views that many found unpatriotic, saw him vili ed by press and fans alike. Still, he had never lost his belt in the ring and held a record of 31-0 by the spring of 1971.

Frazier, on the other hand, had none of the cha-risma or charm that Ali possessed, but he did have a hell of a le hook and was unbeaten at 26-0.

e two met in Madison Square Garden in March of that same year. e ght lasted 15 rounds and it

went to the scorecards, but there was little doubt in the minds of the 20,455 in at-tendance who witnessed the spectacle that night: e great Ali lost. ere was no doubt. Frazier floored him in the final round. " e Greatest" of all times was, a er all, beat-able.

In the world of mixed martial arts and in a world starved of the kind of stardom that Ali, Frazier and their contemporaries supplied, Ronda Rousey was the most popular ghter in the world when she stepped into the ring in Australia on Nov. 14. She was to face another un-beaten woman, Holly Holm.

Like Frazier, Holm was overlooked. She had never lost a ght, but had been a boxing champion. She was attractive but not a "Hollywood" starlet — something Rousey was able to be in her spare time. Rousey, from Venice Beach, California, could be seen knocking out Turtle from "Entourage," tossing Michael Strahan to the

ground in front of a gig-gling Kelly Ripa and sitting in on " e View." Holm, meanwhile, kept her mouth shut and trained for the ght of her life.

Holm, an 800-point un-derdog according to the odds makers in Vegas, stunned the world when she oored Rousey in 59 seconds into the second round at UFC 193. Like Frazier, Holm was a striker, and she managed to hit Rousey in the head with full power 29 times, many sustained by Rousey as she lay flat on her back, the clock ticking on her reign as champion.

The parallels between the two ghts and the four ghters are striking. ere must be a rematch. The world did not so much lose or gain a new champion that night in Australia ... it merely punched its ticket for a possible Thrilla in Manilla, the kind of epic that hasn't been seen in a very, very long time.

On bended knee, Tim asked the big question, Nicole said YES, and they sealed it with a kiss.

Finally, Barack Obama said the San Bernardino attack was a probable terror-ist attack, only a er he said this horrible act could have been work place violence. Unbelievable! Will he ever utter the words Islamic Ter-rorist?

The two attackers , husband and wife, 28-year-old Syed Farook and 27-year-old Tashfeen Malik opened re on a Christmas party, killing 14 (from 26 to 61 years old) and wounded an additional 21.

A er the attack, the au-thorities, along with the FBI, found their home — located in a peaceful suburban neighborhood in San Ber-nardino — anything but peaceful. It was a complete, well put together bomb-making facility. ey also uncovered thousands of rounds of ammunition and at least 12 completed pipe bombs, as well as other weaponry.

The two attackers were alleged followers of ISIS. It was reported that during the attack the wife, Malik, took time to post her allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS. e Islamic State also took credit for the act of terrorism immedi-ately.

is all happened prior to Obama alluding to his work place violence comment!

e family of the couple are claiming they knew nothing, and the grand-mother lived with them.

The couple lived the American Dream. Farook had a $75,000 a year job. e wife was a housewife and full time mother to a six-month-old baby. They lived in a quiet suburban area in sunny California.

Tashfeen came to America on a ancée visa!! How did she go from a wife and mother to a killer. Was she self radicalized? Was he? At this point, many are suggest-ing she radicalized him.

How does this happen? ISIS uses online and on the ground recruitment proce-dures. Social media gives terrorist organizations a lot of power.

According to MSNBC, there are approximately 300 individuals involved with ISIS in this country (if the truth were known probably more), with 56 of them being arrested this year alone.

Obama immediately started his gun control rhet-oric. I would suggest to him the rst thing that should be done is close the damn borders! ese are unusual times and call for strong, unusual measures as well as a strong commander-in-chief.

Keep in mind, the female shooter, Tashfeen Malik, was granted a green card in July 2015 and came here on a fiancée visa. She married Syed Farook for the second time. The first time they married in Mecca, a most holy place. But U.S. law re-quires a marriage within 90 days, which they did.

As per Obama and gun control, California has the strictest gun laws in the country and has the highest rate of mass shootings.

In my opinion, Obama has le a huge void in this country, leaving most people afraid and not trusting the government. Currently, just 19% say they can trust the government always or most of the time, among the lowest levels in the past half-centu-ry. Only 20% would describe

government programs as being well-run. And elected o cials are held in such low regard that 55% of the public says “ordinary Americans” would do a better job of solving national problems.

at leaves 81% of us not trusting our government, certainly not a good climate to ask people to turn over any type of guns they own or try to restrict gun rights. It's not going to happen.

A closing thought: Does Obama still think he has one of the most rigorous screen-ing processes for immi-grants? Remember, one of the San Bernardino, Califor-nia shooters made it through his rigorous screening pro-cesses. And to top o the craziness, the State Depart-ment said at this time they have no plans to change a thing!

And finally, during the national address Sunday night from the White House, a er dancing around, Obama nally said ever so faintly that what happened in San Bernardino was an act of ter-rorism. He cal led on Muslims and Americans worldwide to speak out against ISIS and all those who have this perverted view of Islam. e big question is why haven't these things been done before?

Until next week!

All About Grace

Gospel recording artist Allen Asbury sings a song that sums up the essence of the gospel, “All About Grace.” Christmas is all about the grace and mercy of God. e lights of Christmas point to the Messiah who came to the earth as a bright and shining light that shines in the dark-ness of the world. e Jewish priests had the responsibility of keeping the lights in the temple shining and the incense on the altar burning. As Zachariah, the priest, was going about his duty, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and announced that his wife Elizabeth, who had been barren for many years, would have a baby who would be the forerunner of Christ and would go in the spirit and power of Elijah, “To make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Luke 1:17) ey were to name the child John, which, interestingly, means “grace” or “God is gracious.”

When Elizabeth found out she was pregnant, she exclaimed, “ e Lord has done this for me . . . In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.” (Luke 1:5-25 NIV) Elizabeth realized that she was blessed simply because of God’s favor. is is grace, the unmerited favor of God.

To experience the true miracle of Christmas, you must apply these aspects of grace.

SAVING GRACE. To un-derstand a concept in the Bible, many Bible scholars apply what’s called the law of first mention. The first mention of the word “grace” is found in Genesis 6:8. When the earth became totally corrupt and wicked, God de-termined to destroy the whole earth with a ood. But we nd this beacon of light, “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” (Genesis 6:8) God instructed Noah to prepare an ark, or big boat, for the saving of his family. e

ark is a perfect picture of saving grace through Christ. “For God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love . . . even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), . . . For by grace you have been saved through faith” (Ephe-sians 2:4-9)

ENABLING GRACE. When John was born, Zacha-riah was lled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied as he sang what has been called “Zachariah’s Song”. “Praise be to the Lord . . . because he has come and redeemed his people . . . to rescue us from the hand of our enemies and to enable us to serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness.” (Luke 1:68-75) Only by God’s enabling grace can we serve him and live in holiness and righteousness. Whatever God asks you to do, he will give you the grace to do it. e apostle Paul had what he referred to as “a thorn in the esh.” He prayed three times for God to deliver him. God’s answer was, “My grace is su cient for you.” (II Cor-inthians 12:9) Paul credited God for His grace to take the gospel to the gentiles. (Gala-tians 2:6-9) God’s grace will enable you to accomplish His will.

EXTENDING GRACE. Zachariah prophesied of the Messiah who would “give light

to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79) e Jewish feast of Purim com-memorated the deliverance of the Hebrews from the plots of wicked Haman, who wanted to exterminate the Jews. (Esther 3:7–9:26) Jewish Queen Esther risked her life to go before the king unin-vited and unannounced to beseech the king to spare their lives. e king stretched out his scepter of grace to her. God has stretched out his Scepter of grace to us through His only begotten son. (John 3:16) Should we not also extend grace to others? Paul was shunned by the apostles, because of his past, until Barn-abas extended grace to him. To experience the miracle of Christmas, extend grace to those who have o ended you.

It’s all about grace. Experi-ence God’s saving grace — His enabling grace — and extend His grace to others.

Helping Pets in Need

D E A R P A W ’ S CORNER: As the holiday season swings into full gear, many people may be looking to do something more enriching than just shopping for gifts and getting things we don’t really need. Please encour-age your readers to con-sider donating to their local shelter or o ering some of their time as volunteers to help pets during the holi-days and year-round. — Avid Volunteer in Virginia

DEAR AVID: You told them, and I thank you! e holidays can be a very hectic time for many people. But nding time to volunteer at your local shelter, or helping to host

a fundraising or pet-sup-plies drive, can be an en-riching experience and a break from shopping and planning for holiday events.

While some local shel-ters don’t have a formal volunteer program, many do. The first step is to contact the shelter or visit its website to nd out if it accept volunteers, what jobs they’re expected to do, and how to apply. If you have children who are interested in volunteering, nd out the minimum age and what kids can do if they’re too young to vol-unteer.

For example, the adop-tion center at Boston’s MSPCA Angell center requires a six-month commitment of two hours per week from volunteers, who handle a variety of tasks from cleaning habi-tats to feeding the animals, walking dogs, socializing with smaller animals, or interacting with visitors. That’s quite a commit-

ment, but the volunteer program often is com-pletely lled each year.

Single-day or weekend volunteer activities also

may be available, o en as group events. ese are a great way to get familiar with being a shelter vol-unteer.

It wasn't until 1978 that surveyors in a helicopter saw in a remote area a clearing that was obviously not of n a t u r a l o r i g i n . Investigation revealed

that Karp and his four children (his wife had died in 1961) were living in a crude log dwelling. ey'd had no contact with the outside world since eeing their village in 1936, and two of the children had never seen a human not related to them.
