From Pat’s Desk . . . We have two more meetings until this Optimist Year ends (on September 30th). It seems like the year is racing by, but when I look back at the past 10 months I’m truly amazed at all of our accomplishments. Above all, we have stayed focused on our goals to:

1) Grow Membership (who wouldn’t want to join our club!) 2) Ensure every member participates on a committee during the

year and 3) HAVE FUN ... All while we’re helping others in our

communities.

To date, our club is up 14 members. An increase of fifteen new members will make us a “Distinguished” Club. We only have one more new member to add in order to reach this lofty goal.

As always, feel free to contact me for any questions, etc.

Vision Hope’s Champions for Life Kids Camp The weather was hot and humid but the Central Macomb Optimist Club was well represented, with Dianne Sinning and Sue Kardasz as our co-chairs. Judy DuPont, Kathy Kirby, Kathy Nowicke, Dave Fries, Dianne Sinning, Pat Rabaut Miller, Susie Morris, Bill Konrad, Theresa Edwards, Leslie Schaefer and Lynn Artes joined Sue Pace to prepare the room for a fantasy Birthday Party for the foster kids at the camp. Each child received a cake with their name on it as the Optimists and other volunteers clapped and sang “Happy Birthday” until all children had received their cake.

10th Annual - Shop With The Sheriff (Aug 27) It’s been said, “It takes a Village ...”, the Central Macomb Optimist Club is truly an amazing “Village” between our membership and our family and friends.

Although they are not able to attend our meetings, both Shelly Penzien (Founder, Macomb Charitable Foundation) and Sheriff Tony Wickersham are both members of our club. We are happy to partner with them for this event.

The 10th annual Shop with the Sheriff (our largest expenditure each year) will help us send 100 homeless kids armed with $100 each to go shopping for needed clothes for school. The Macomb Charitable Foundation (or MCF) has requested that we provide volunteer support for an additional 50 children (which they will be funding). In all 150 kids, with $100 store credit will be shopping at Meijer (26 Mile & Van Dyke). While exiting the store, each child will be provided with a book of their choice (provided by Barnes & Noble) and a backpack filled with school supplies.

Thanks to the generosity of folks who contributed during our St Patrick’s Day dinner dance; a donation from Bearing Burners Auto Club (including member Fred Lyon); a generous grant from Meijer; and the amazing generosity of our families & friends we are able to afford the $10,000 expense of this event.

Every year this event gets bigger and better because of our Village consists of generous and amazing volunteers. Thank you for ALL you do and thanks to Chair, Sue Kardasz, for once again organizing this event.

Macomb Charitable Foundation’s Women’s Golf Outing (Aug 8) After three years of rain, the day was filled with sunshine and a light breeze to ensure that the two CMOC teams had a great day on the golf course. Thanks to Julie Gola and Kathy Kirby for coordinating our teams. Golfers included Julie Gola, Kathy Vatalaro and Kathy Nowicke along with a friend Mary Ellen on one team and Kathy Kirby, Leslie Schaefer, Pat Rabaut Miller and a friend Dori on the second team. Julie and Kathy Nowicke were big door prize winners and Kathy Kirby’s team one “Skins”. It was a beautiful day for the benefit of the homeless families in Macomb County. Tupperware Party proceeds Thank You, Kathy Kirby for bringing the Tupperware fundraiser to our club. In all we netted $275. Noble for our first try. Thanks to all who updated their Tupperware supply for the benefit of the kids in our communities. Wine Tasting Event / Fellowship: We work so hard each year to support the kids in our communities, there comes a time that we just have to have some fun and fellowship. Thanks to Chairs, Elaine and Fred Lyon for their effort to coordinate a Wine Tasting event at Fieldstone Winery, in Rochester on September 7th in lieu of a meeting. Bring your family and friends to join us. This is our last opportunity to bring in new members to our club. Cost is $15 per person in advance (no sales at the door), which will pay for the wine tasting and pairings (e.g. cheese and chocolates). We are also asking our members to bring a dish (appetizer or dessert) to pass. Contact Elaine for tickets and more information (586) 791-8006. (See flyer attached to this email) Calling all Golfers & Duffers: President Pat has volunteered to help the Macomb Cultural and Economic Program (MCEP) to assist in coaching law students from China on how to play golf including driving, pitching and putting. Most have never touched a golf club so it’s a fun time with the students who are in our area for about 10 days while they get an education on the laws in our country (at the local,

state and federal levels). Please let Pat know if you are able help August 25 at about 5:45 PM at CJ Barrymore’s outside driving range (on Hall Road)’ (586) 731-1831 or [email protected]. The MCEP will provide transportation for the students to / from CJ Barrymore’s (on Hall Road) and the golf clubs). We would need to demonstrate how to hold the club, how to swing the club and hit the ball. Then they will try it on their own. Thanks for considering volunteering! And please feel free to invite others. Boy Scout Troop # 209 Member, Trish Sellers, is our liaison between the Central Macomb Optimist Club, the ‘Charter Organization’ and Boy Scout Troop # 209. In the upcoming months this troop will be at the Pioneering Weekend in August and Caving/Hiking/Ziplining at Hocking Hills in Ohio in September. Additionally, they will be starting their annual Popcorn Sales fundraiser. This troop offers a vast variety of activities and opportunities for the Scouts and their families. Thanks Trish for acting as our liaison. Volunteers needed - - We are looking for volunteers for the following committees or activities:
