Narcissus The narcissus, the beautiful flower that catches Proserpina’s eye, is notorious in Greek and Roman mythology. Narcissus’ mother was told he would have a long life as long as he never looked at his own image. Narcissus, however, was vain and unkind, and he angered the gods. The gods punished him by making him look at his reflection. He fell in love with his image and spend the rest of his days wanting to look at himself. Eventually, he was transformed to a flower that now bears his name. The narcissus flower symbolizes empty, heartless love and also excessive love and admiration for one’s self.
