Big Trends at CES 2016: VR, Drone, Laptops, and Accessories for Everything

It's 2016 and the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas starts the year with a bang. It's a chance for manufacturers large and small to show off their innovations for the coming year, bringing the latest consumer technologies to Nevada's desert resort.

As expected there was plenty of news about Ultra HD, new wearables, laptops and tablets. And, smarthome and the internet of things were at the fore, along with VR and AR technologies.

SamsungSamsung used its press conference at CES to as a launch pad for a number of new products we’ll see roll out in the coming months, and the company has even more to show off at its booth on the show floor. Let’s cover the five coolest things Samsung unveiled at CES 2016.

1. New SUHD TVs

Samsung’s 2016 SUHD television lineup features HDR displays with 1,000 nits of contrast. The typical wide range of options you would expect to see will also be there, such as curved displays and ridiculously thin bezels. There’s even one model with a curved design and no bezel. Samsung’s new SUHD TVs also cover all sizes up to 89 inches.

2. Family Hub RefrigeratorThe Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator enables the family to write notes, post photos, share calendars and artwork, right on the refrigerator’s touchscreen, or using their smartphone if they are away.

3. Samsung Rink

Samsung’s Gear VR is one of the most fun new products we’ve used in the past couple of years, created in partnership with the virtual reality experts at Oculus. Now, Samsung’s new rink controllers push things to the next level. These nifty controllers fit over the user’s hands and sense motion as the user’s hands move.

4. Samsung Welt

“WELT is a smart wearable healthcare belt that looks like a normal belt, thus offering consumers a more discreet way of using smart sensor technology to monitor their health,” Samsung said in a blog post. WELT is capable of recording the user’s waist size, eating habits and the number of steps taken, as well as time spent sitting down.

5. Samsung Galaxy TabPro S

Slated to launch in February, the Galaxy TabPro S is a Windows 10 machine that will give Microsoft’s surface lineup a run for its money. The new notebook features a smart design, lightweight build and a beautiful 12-inch Super AMOLED display with 2K resolution. The tablet itself is 6.3 millimeters thick and weighs just 693 grams, yet it packs a battery that can deliver up to 10.5 hours of usage per charge.

Acer

Acer has made a number of announcements at the opening of the show with wide ranging updates. There's a new Acer Aspire Switch 12 S 2-in-1, featuring a 4K or full HD display, Thunderbolt 3 on USB Type-C connectivity for fast charging or data transfer, SSD storage, Intel Core M 6-gen chipsets and Windows 10.

If Windows 10 is your thing, there's also the Liquid Jade Primo, a Windows 10 Phone, offering an alternative to the Lumia 950. It has a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED display and a Snapdragon 808 chipset for plenty of power, along with 21- and 8-megapixel cameras. It's shipping in February.

Fitbit

Fitbit said it was going to shake things up at CES 2016. Having enjoyed bumper sales over the festive period, the company announced a new wearable, the Fitbit Blaze.

This is more like a smartwatch and a little less like a discreet activity tracker. It's a smart-looking device, joining a platform that's well established and widely used.

HTCHTC has announced the UA HealthBox in collaboration with Under Armour. This is a complete kit, comprised of the UA Band, UA Scale and UA Heart Rate, aims to deliver everything you need to monitor your health and fitness. It's an explosion into connected health, aiming to match the offerings from the likes of Fitbit.

LGLG announced its LG Signature line, a collection of products spanning categories, including a TV, washing machine, fridge and air purifier. The LG Signature G6 OLED TV is also the company's new flagship, alongside the E6. LG's 2016 OLED TVs all carry the Ultra HD Premium tag, promising stunning picture quality for your future 4K content.

Panasonic

Panasonic announced a wide range of new products at this year's CES. It kicked off with new cameras, updating the popular TZ family with the TZ80 and the TZ100 models. The Lumix TZ80 is pretty much an upgrade of the existing TZ70, with a 30x zoom making for a good all-rounder. It will cost £359 and will be available in March.

FFZERO1 Concept Car

This smart car, from Faraday Future, is the automobile of our dreams. It’s got over 1000 horsepower and can go from 0 to 60 in just three seconds. Inside, its steering wheel doubles as a docking station for your smartphone, turning your handheld into a connected copilot. The best thing about the FFZERO1, however, of course, is its futuristic design, as if a 23rd-century Batman created the car himself. Don’t expect to buy the FFZERO1 anytime soon, however. It’s only a concept for now.

Smarter’s Fridge Cam

It’s a wireless camera you install in your refrigerator. The idea is that you can then peek inside your fridge at any time—such as when you are away from home—via the companion smartphone app to see what food you have available. That way you know what to buy on your way home so you don’t need to run out again once you get there.

Hydrao Smart Shower

Speaking of the smart home…the Hydrao Smart Shower is a smart shower head that shows you exactly how much water you are using. It’s a great device for the eco-conscious. It works via a built-in LED light that lights up in one of three different colors. Each subsequent color means you’ve passed a certain water amount used threshold: five gallons, seven gallons and ten gallons.

EHang 184 Human Drone

Thought that smart car was the only vehicle at CES? Think again. One of our favorites of the show is the EHang 184 human drone. Yep, this is a drone that you can fly IN. The drone is almost five feet tall and weighs 440 pounds. It is built to carry a single passenger for 23 minutes. Max speed? 60MPH. But again, don’t think you are going to be taking this thing for a quick jaunt around the city any time soon. For now the EHang 184 is just a concept—but boy do we want one.

Sensorwake Alarm Clock

But perhaps our favorite device this year is an alarm clock. Yep—an alarm clock. But not like one you’ve ever used. That’s because the Sensorwake alarm clock doesn’t use loud beeps or music to jolt you out of bed in the morning. Instead it uses SMELLS. Yeah, smells. Set a time and the Sensorwake will unleash a blast of scents including coffee, croissants, chocolate, peppermint, the seaside, and the jungle. The scents are contained in interchangeable capsules good for 30 uses each. And if a scent doesn’t wake you up, not to worry, the Sensorwake has a backup sound alarm too.

Lenovo Yoga Mouse & Remote ControlThis slim mouse/remote hybrid will make a great travel companion — just like Lenovo’s Yoga laptops. The Yoga starts out completely flat, where you can use it as a remote to control presentations, movies, or music playing on your laptop. But give it a twist and it shifts into a downward dog shape, with the perfect ergonomic angle to rest your hand on for use as a mouse. A rechargeable battery gives it about a month of battery life, which makes it easy to toss into your laptop bag without having to worry about whether you’ve plugged it in (or whether you’re carrying spare batteries).

Sony Bravia 4K HDR Ultra HD TVsSony's latest models include the Bravia XBR-X850D (55", 65", 75" and 85”), the XBR-X930D (55" and 65”), and the XBR-X940D (75”), and all of them have 4K displays offering four times the number pixels than a standard 1080p HD screen — translating to sharper, clearer pictures. On top of that, Sony’s new 4K Bravia series integrates HDR, which provides brighter colors and better contrast (just like it does when you use the HDR setting to take photos on your smartphone).
