CESA was established in 1980 and since then we have arranged language courses abroad for thousands of people, of all ages and linguistic abilities (from beginners to very advanced students with specialised needs). Why learn a language abroad?

There are lots of reasons to improve your skills in a foreign language. It may be that you wish to improve your exam results, enhance your career prospects, or simply increase your pleasure when travelling abroad. Perhaps the best reason is summed up as: “Knowing a second language is like having a second soul…”

Live the language. It’s the only way to really learn effectively. With no distractions, you concentrate 100% on the language and are literally immersed in it for a given period of time. The teachers provide a framework but living with native speakers means you are constantly practising, revising , correcting and expanding your knowledge of the language. Fluency, accuracy and above all confidence are increased enormously.

Students of any age or ability can sometimes “plateau” reaching a level of competence from which it is hard to improve. Studying abroad can make a huge difference, in terms of re-kindling your enthusiasm, providing a much deeper understanding and giving you a real love of the language.

QWhat can I achieve during my course?

As little as a couple of weeks can give you a great jump start, or a big boost if you are already studying the language in your own country. Two or four weeks will allow you to consolidate your skills and take a significant leap forward, taking knowledge that was once merely passive and enhancing it into a much more active form.If you can dedicate a longer period of time (anything from 4 weeks to 6 months) then you can expect to cover a lot of linguistic ground. You will progress through class levels to higher ability groups. You will begin to explore more complex linguistic situations, looking at subtleties and specialised knowledge in key subject areas.

For anyone, progress depends on a number of factors – including your own level of motivation – but you can expect an increase in confidence and significantly greater success in formal exams.

Will I get a qualification?

It’s not compulsory (which as plenty of our students have only just come off the academic treadmill at home, is nice to know). However colleges will issue Course Certificates proving your attendance and the level of ability you attained. French, German, Russian, Portuguese and Spanish state recognised exams are available and many colleges offers specific exam preparation courses. For more information, please contact CESA.

How will my language level be assessed?

On the first day of lessons, your tutors will assess your current level with a short written and in some cases oral test. On the basis of this test, you will be grouped with others with similar abilities. Clearly complete beginners will not be tested. Many students find it advisable to brush up their knowledge of grammar basics, verb recognition and listening skills prior to arrival (especially if you’re a little rusty). A few colleges ask you to complete a test in advance of arrival – we’ll let you know if this applies to you!

When enrolling, we are only asking you for an indication of your current ability. Once you have booked either the college will ask you to complete a linguistic questionnaire or assess your level on the first day of your course. Only after this will they place you in a group with other students of similar ability.

Level 4 Intermediate CEF B1/B2You understand and can use the essentials of the language, although errors are still common. Information on topics of personal interest can be communicated in a more complex vocabulary and you can generally communicate in some routine professional contexts.Allow approx. 4/6 weeks+ to reach Level 5

Level 5 High Intermediate CEF B2You can use a wide range of structures with very few errors and can express ideas and opinions on a variety of topics. You can exchange information reliably and have an active command of the essentials of the language.Allow approx 4/6+ weeks to reach Level 6

Level 6 Advanced CEF C1/C2You can participate in any communicative situation using an extensive range of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. You adopt appropriate formulation in many different circumstances. General Language CoursesStandard Courses & Intensive CoursesThese are the most popular student course options. They combine good quality language tuition over a period of weeks to suit you, the student. In many cases you can choose to follow a programme from one to eight weeks (or longer), concentrating on developing your current knowledge whilst soaking up the atmosphere. Standard Courses are half-day programmes of 15 or 20 lessons a week. Intensive Courses are generally 25 to 30 lessons per week. You will be expected to work hard, but the pleasures of learning combined with the joys of sampling life abroad makes the experience a thoroughly agreeable one!

Combined CoursesWhen time is short but the need to improve your language skills is pressing, the combination of group tuition and private one to one classes offers the best of both worlds. Generally students combine 20 group lessons with either 5 or 10 private lessons per week. Enjoy the dynamics of a group programme but spend concentrated time on your personal linguistic needs with a dedicated tutor.

Private TuitionA highly effective method of learning a language, whatever your current level of ability. We always recommend private tuition to students with specific objectives or very limited time available. Lessons can be tailored to meet individual needs, enabling the student to progress at the most appropriate pace, developing the vocabulary and skills that they, personally, require. It is beneficial for students looking for revision courses prior to academic exams and business people who need to maximise progress during the time available.

The fact that all the lessons are in Spanish and Spanish only is fantastic! I have definitely come home with a lot more confidence, and lots of new friends! My most memorable moments are; on a paddleboat on the river, sunbathing on the terraces, seeing the Alcazar, watching the women dance at feria, and lunchtimes at the school when lessons have just finished.

Long Term & GAP CoursesLanguages for Life CoursesIf you have the time, then by living for several months in the same community and studying at a language college, you can really `get under the skin’ of a language and become close to the people who breathe life into it. It is one of the best things that you can do during a GAP year after school or university or as a Career Break. By the end of a CESA Languages for Life course you will have a feeling of linguistic confidence and understanding which will stay with you for years to come.

Academic Term/Year CoursesFor serious language learners who have substantial time to dedicate to gaining the maximum language benefit, these courses are ideal (especially for Gap year students). Foreign Language Exam CoursesCan you speak a foreign language well? Can you prove it?You can after a dedicated language programme preparing you for the French DELF exams, the Spanish DELE exams, the Japanese JLPT exams…. in fact for each language we offer, there are generally a set of serious academic exams covering a range of abilities, so you can gain a recognised Certificate – which looks great on the CV and ensures that you can prove your new found language skills. “It has been three months since I embarked on a great adventure to the South of France and for the first time in all this time I have a moment to reflect on the time I have spent in Cannes. When I arrived it was the first time I had ever been away from my family for more than two weeks, so three months was so daunting. Nice is a very comfortable place to learn French in France. I loved the whole experience and it totally met my requirements. I knew that I needed to work on my French before the exams, and felt a week in France was essential to polish my French language skills. The A level course worked so well for me. The lessons were well presented and I felt I could talk to my teacher if I was confused at any point. Studying with really good native French speakers, who really knew their stuff was so helpful to me. Linguistically my speaking improved so much and I now feel a lot more confident in speaking French and my understanding of French. We were able to cover a lot of grammar and topic related work. The school was so nice and the staff were to my surprise really approachable. The school had a perfect situation in Nice, close to everything and easy to find. It was so positive for me to be able to speak French at every given opportunity, though I did feel homesick for the first couple of day, even though it was only a week! Adult & Business CoursesWhether you need to develop or improve language skills for personal reasons or better business interaction, you need a programme that can deliver a high level of service and flexibility and the language skills appropriate for your needs.

CESA offers a range of course options that will help you achieve your individual linguistic goals and can improve your knowledge of the business customs of the country.

Private TuitionPrivate tuition can cover general language skills or be specifically targeted on key aspectsof any business or professional requirements; be that; sales, marketing, law, medicine orany other discipline.

CESA offers full immersion programmes of up to 40 lessons per week and can include week‐day lunches with a tutor. Results can be startling, a beginner with a good linguistic ear and experience of other languages, can reach linguistic competence in their target language within 4 weeks on a private tuition course. Many adult students prefer to work intensively for one week to boost their current abilities, thereby losing no more than 5 working days from the office.

Small Group ClassesSmall group classes where the maximum amount of teacher attention ensures rapid results are also very popular with business people wishing to develop general language skills. The average student age is higher on these programmes, than on the General Language courses and the smaller class size ensures a greater level of teacher/student interaction.

Combined CoursesCombined Courses (group classes in-conjunction with private lessons) are offered by many colleges and so offer students the best of both worlds. Individual teacher attention in combination with the group class work ensures rapid results and is an excellent solution for those whose prime requirement is rapid acquisition of general language skills.

Over 50’s CoursesIf you wish to improve your language skills, but would feel happier being

with others of your own age group, these course offer a great opportunity to practise a language, see the sights and have a great language holiday with like‐minded people!

My expectations were met fully! There was a good variety of approaches with plenty of opportunities to speak. The right balance between “closed” and more “open” exercises. The school was well organised but very relaxed, allowing pupils of all ages to mix comfortably. I particularly enjoyed the 2 ½ hours of one to one lessons.

My main problem was pronunciation and the teacher worked on that aspect for me. My teacher (Sophie) was excellent. A great deal of problems for adult beginners is that most grammatical structures are written for children, but Sophie always managed to place the work into an adult situation.

QHow are the Courses run?

Every college is slightly different but a typical course would involve a mixture of structured teaching – probably in the morning – with free time and some informal, cultural studies and trips later in the day. Some evening activities are also offered. There may be 6 to 15 students per class of various nationalities, but mostly Europeans.

The exact teaching philosophy varies but all colleges use a `communicative approach’ where speaking and listening to the language is practised both in and out of class and all lessons are held in the target language. Many colleges combine this with a systematic explanation of the grammar. A wide variety of materials are used to assist the learning process – TV programmes, DVDs, audio, computer software, newspapers and magazines as well as more traditional tools such as text books and self-study language sessions. This combination of approaches makes learning a foreign language more effective and much more interesting.

What are the teachers like?

Our teachers are all native speakers, trained to teach their own language to foreign nationals. They ONLY speak in the target language in class. A variety of materials will be used to aid the learning process (see above for details). Learning through practice is combined with a systematic explanation of the grammar at each linguistic level, so that all four of the key skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) are covered according to the current ability of the class.

Do you cater for complete beginners or only students with prior knowledge?

We cater for everyone! Of course beginners need to be realistic about what can be learnt on short course options. Initially you will be taught basic grammar and simple vocabulary. Classes will concentrate on developing essential skills – key topics relating to everyday language, pronunciation and comprehension skills, and yes you will be taught in the native tongue. This really is the best way and it works – trust us! Beginners are generally only accepted on specific start dates. At higher levels, students have a greater variety of start dates to choose from and the language skills taught become progressively more advanced. A greater degree of written work and more complex grammar is integrated into the courses. You are able to put current knowledge into practice with trained native speakers who will encourage you throughout the working day.

Linguistically the school was excellent. The teaching was robust and the improvements I made in merely two weeks were marked. The school was very well organised. I have no complaints at all, the teaching was fantastic and the group was small (3 students), the teacher pushed us all to improve at our own pace.

The best part of the course was the rapidity of my learning in such a short space of time.

What happens on my first day?

The first day serves a dual role, 1/ to familiarise you with the school and local area and 2/ to allow the college to organise your language course in accordance with your booking and language ability.

Lessons may be missed due to level testing and induction activities on the first day of a course. In some schools, the first lesson will be lost and in others a large part of the day may be dedicated to welcome activities. Lessons may also be lost at the end of a course due to evaluation tests. As each school has a different policy we go into detail about the first day in the individual Briefing Pack we send out once a student has booked a course.

What are the other students like?At every college there will be a wide variety of nationalities. German, Swiss, Dutch and Scandinavian students will be present, whilst Americans, South Americans and Japanese students will probably also feature but in lesser numbers. The British are likely to be in the minority, this is to your advantage! If you really do feel the need to communicate for a while in your native tongue that’s fine – it’s a near‐certainty that the majority of your fellow students will speak (depressingly) fluent English, as theirsecond, third or fourth language! Many CESA students have made/make friends for life with people from countries they would otherwise never have come into contact with, through attending one of our courses.

Of course many students are taking a course for academic reasons. Teenagers preparing for GCSE’s or A’levels, plenty will be on a GAP year (pre or post their University degree) whilst others are already undergraduates looking to lift their grades or reinvigorate a language that for various good reasons has taken a back seat. Older adults, working or retired, teachers and many individuals of ALL ages have benefited from CESA courses.

QWhat happens on public holidays?

As a rule, there will be no classes on public holidays. Therefore, if a public holiday falls on a day or days during which a student is attending a course, they can expect to not receive lessons on that day (and these lessons are not made up or refunded). We have tried to indicate all relevant dates on the Course Finder. However, the public holiday dates that we provide are subject to alteration by national and local authorities and should only be used as a guide.

What should I budget for?

As a general rule, your fees cover all tuition costs, college registration fees, books & course materials and accommodation. Do refer to the `Course Finder’ on line for a detailed programme quote or email/call us and we’ll be happy to go through it with you or draw up a detailed budget and email it to you.

You will need to budget separately for travel to and from your course, daily commuting costs, lunches, snacks etc, and money for social activities and excursions. Sometimes transfers (from the airport/station to the accommodation) are included, sometimes not.

Do I need Insurance cover?

Yes! Use the “Insurance” link on the website, so that you can arrange the correct cover, in compliance with government legislation so that should the unthinkable happen, you’re not left high and dry.

The month I spent in Cannes was the best month I’ve experienced in my life. If I had to pick a ground hog day it may well be one of those days when the sun made everyone exuberant during the afternoon, followed by an evening out made special by the sublime discussions we’d have about our different cultures. Any apprehensions I had about meeting people from different countries have gone. Cannes unexpectedly made me love the world and has given me a newfound passion to travel.

All of our partner colleges will arrange accommodation for the duration of the course – with plenty of choice available. Generally there are set arrival and departure dates (we specify them throughout the website and college profiles) and it is important that you keep to these whenever possible. On courses of 4 weeks or longer students are welcome to combine 2 weeks private household stay with a further 2 weeks+ in a shared apartment or residence option.Accommodation costs are quoted in the “Course Finder” on line and also in the College Profiles.

Hosts (or private households)All our private accommodation is visited regularly by staff from our partner colleges. You can stay in a private household (host family) on either a bed & breakfast, half-board or full-board basis, depending on the college options. Each college selects between 30 and 100 hosts to accommodate their students. Some hosts are couple, others are families with children or more frequently widows or divorcees, since they are more likely to have spare rooms and can host house-guests. In cities or central town locations it is likely that hosts will live in apartment blocks. Do not expect your surroundings to be very luxurious, being pragmatic, very prosperous people don’t need to take in students. However, you can gain a great deal from this contact with native speakers. Certainly, living as part of a private household gives you an insight into the daily lives of `real people’ and a better understanding of local culture.

Shared apartmentsThis option is ideal for those who enjoy mixing with other international students or local people with a spare room or two. Students need to be fairly independent and must expect reasonably basic facilities. The kitchen and bathroom are shared (on average 3 to 6 people per apartment). Bedding and kitchen utensils are provided.

College residencesSeveral colleges have halls of residence either on site or nearby. Most offer fairly basic accommodation (the exceptions being the colleges in Malaga & Nerja) but the social atmosphere usually more than makes up for this. Colleges provide single or shared rooms (sometimes with more than two people per room) and bed linen.

Studio apartmentsSome colleges have excellent contacts amongst local apartment owners. If you would prefer to pay more for better quality, more comfortable private accommodation, we can organise this. Again all bed linen will be provided.

HotelsWe can always arrange a hotel stay for those who prefer independence, and a greater degree of comfort. CESA staff have themselves often sampled the hotels in the cities and towns where we have colleges and when we can’t personally recommend a hotel to you, the college staff always can. Please let us know the category of hotel and style of room you require.

My hostess was perfectly located - convenient for the centre but just far enough out to feel more residential and less touristy. The lady I lived with was really nice, quite laid-back and gave me my own space but still looked after me - fed me well, let me use the washing machine, gave me medicine when I was ill etc. It also gave me the opportunity to speak a fair bit of the language.

Are there any visa requirements? Visa requirements do not apply to Europeans travelling within the EU, but if you are not European or wish to go to Russia, Japan or China please consult CESA for advice and do allow time for the college to provide a Letter of Invitation for the relevant Consulate.

Work out a budget for your course; including tuition, accommodation, CESA administration fee, transfer costs etc. and taking into account any additional costs that apply i.e. extra accommodation, any summer supplements, college registration fees etc. If you want to confirm you have priced everything correctly, please contact us and we will go through the costings with you. Do you want CESA to arrange a transfer? Collection from the nearest airport/station is arranged by most colleges, (for a fee) please refer to College Profiles or on line for details.

Have you checked course availability with CESA staff? This is particularly important during the busy summer months, but is recommended throughout the year.

Have you checked your best travel route? CESA does not arrange travel, but we are always happy to offer advice, which can save a lot of wasted time and expense.

Is the course you want open to you? Some courses have age or ability restrictions. It’s best to be clear from the word go, so if in doubt please talk to us.

Are you within 8 weeks of the course start date? If yes, remember that full fees will be required at the time of booking.
