Checking a Conscious PersonChecking a Conscious Person
For a conscious person with no immediate life-threatening conditions:
Interview person and bystanders
Check the person from head to toe
Conducting InterviewsConducting Interviews
Ask…What happened?
Do you feel pain/discomfort anywhere?
Do you have any allergies?
Do you have any medical conditions or are you taking any medication?
When did you last eat or drink?

Do not move if you suspect head, neck, or back injury
Check person’s head and face
Look for cuts, bruises, bumps, or depressions
Monitor consciousness
Look for changes in the person’s breathing

To open the airway:
Head tilt/chin-lift

o Look, listen, and feel for breathing for no more than 10 seconds
o If not breathing, give 2 rescueo breaths for a child or infant.
o If person is breathing, maintain an open airway through the head-tilt/chin-lift

If an adult has no signs of life, you must assume the problem is a cardiac emergency and begin CPR immediately

Look for blood-soaked clothing or blood spurting from a wound

Shock- Circulatory system fails to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the body’s tissues and vital organs
Traumatic Shock: injury related shock.
Treatment ObjectivesTreatment Objectives
1. Improve Circulation
2. Maintain an Adequate Supply of Oxygen
3. Maintain Normal Body Temperature.
Signals of ShockSignals of Shock
• Restlessness or irritability
• Altered level of consciousness
• Nausea or vomiting
• Pale, ashen, cool, moist skin
• Rapid breathing and pulse
• Excessive thirst
Caring for ShockCaring for Shock
Call 911
Have the person lie down
Control any bleeding
Elevate person’s legs about 12 inches
Help person maintain normal body temperature
Do not give person anything to eat or drink
Reassure person
Continue to monitor person’s ABCs
