CHADRON FUR TRADE DAYSJuly 11-14, 2013

37th Annual Fur Trade DaysThe Community of Chadron welcomes you to an

unforgettably unique experience – Fur Trade Days. Chadron, located in the northwest corner of Nebraska, was named for the French fur trader Louis Baptiste Chartran, and offers a weekend filled with history, rendezvous, entertainment, down-home hospitality, great food, and LOTS OF FUN! There is something for everyone and a chance to see neighbors and make new friends. It’s a FURociously good time!

Buckskinners’ Camp The Bordeaux Creek Fur Trade and Muzzleloading

Association’s Rendezvous, located 3.5 miles east and 8 miles south of Chadron, is open Thursday, July 11, for the setup of the teepees and old-time shelters. The camp is always open to the public, but Saturday, July 13, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., free shuttle rides will be provided. Enjoy muzzleloading shoots, tomahawk and knife throwing contests and plenty of carousing afterward. Check out the fur, handicrafts, and bead work offered for sale by traders at nominal prices.

World Championship Buffalo Chip Throw

The Buffalo Chip Competition begins at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. These are real buffalo chips and whether you throw over or underhand, selecting just the right chip is an art all by itself. After all the scores are calculated for each of the categories, first, second, and third places will receive Gold, Silver, and Bronze Chip Plaques to memorialize their accomplishments.

Museum of the Fur TradeVisit the Museum of the Fur Trade, 3 miles east of Chadron

on Highway 20. A newer exhibit, The Voyageur, highlights the men who transported trade goods, equipment, important passengers and furs to and from market by canoes. A 36-foot birchbark canoe that would have carried a crew of 6 to 14 and would have had a load capacity of 6 tons highlights the exhibit. Open daily 8-5 p.m. during the summer. Admission $5 (17 and under - free). www.furtrade.org

Fur Trade Days 37th Annual ParadeIt starts at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 13 and proceeds down

Main Street from Tenth to First. Get a good seat and enjoy the excitement. Stop by the Masonic Hall prior to the parade for pancakes. The Junior Tractor pull will be just outside the Masonic Hall following the parade.

Warm hospitality, dazzling sunny days and cool star-studded nights will make you feel right at home!

Where history comes to life!

Buffalo Burger BarbecueImmediately following the parade on Saturday, July 13,

the aroma of grilled buffalo burgers and music will fill the air on the courthouse lawn. The burgers are sure to satisfy the heartiest of appetites and sell out fast, so come early. The Ice Cream Social is just a few steps away.

Fur Trade Flag Ceremony and More!Be sure to see the dramatic presentation ceremony of the flags

of the many nations involved in America’s fur trade, following the Chadron Community Church Barbecue. The evening will continue amidst music by the Local Musicians, and Family Fun Night. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy an evening with neighbors and friends at the Courthouse Lawn.

RodeoThe Fur Trade Rodeo begins at 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the

Dawes County Fairgrounds. Competition and excitement are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. The Fur Trade Concession stand will be available with all your favorite snacks.

The Colter RunSaturday, July 13 the Rotary Club sponsors a 5K and 10K, and

a fun run. The Colter Run is named for the brave John Colter who outran 200 Blackfeet Indians in a life and death footrace. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. at Chadron State College Armstrong Gym, with the run beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Classic Car ShowThe Chadron Corvette Club will sponsor its 5th annual classic

ar show during Fur Trade Days. The event will take lace in the shade of Wilson Park, Saturday, July 13, from noon to 3 p.m. We are expecting cars from all around the area and will be presenting first place and runner-up trophies in 10 classes.

Marty BlockerOn July 13, at 2:00 p.m. on the Courthouse Lawn, spend a

little time listening in on poetry with a western flair. Marty Blocker is a working cowboy and ranch hand for a large cattle operation just north of Cody, Nebraska. Plying his trade has given him plenty of subject matter for his poems and an edge of authenticity in his works. Besides writing his own award-winning poems, Marty also recites the works of past and present masters, presenting a wider range of styles and stories.

If it’s riding colts, feeding with a team, branding or just plain making a living on the ranch, Marty likes to share and promote the good, and sometimes not so good, way of life that is waning from our western folklore.

2nd Annual Historical Cemetery TourYou know Chadron has a history, but do you know about

all of the wonderful characters that made the town what it is today? Be sure to attend the Greenwood Cemetery Tour on Saturday, July 13, to meet some of the people from our past. Six new characters will be introduced with one character being revisited. These people knew each other and interacted on a daily basis. come meet Judge Slattery, Mary Woodard (AKA Red Jacket), Levi Sweat, E.E. Egan, James Good and Fannie O’Linn. Reacquaint yourselves with Mary Smith-Hayward.

A new feature this year will be a tour of military gravesites at Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Roland Curd will lead you from grave to grave and explain a little about each person. These people were important citizens of Chadron and the Nation in protecting our freedom.

Tickets will be sold atthe gates and parking attendants will direct you to the parking areas. Cost for each ticket is $10 and will cover all three tours. People 15 and under are admitted free. Both Greenwood tours will have the same characters but different actors.

Tour times: 1 - 4:00 p.m. - Greenwood Cemetery 2 - 5:30 p.m. - Calvary Cemetery 3 - 7:00 p.m. - Greenwood Cemetery

Roundhouse ToursThe Nebraska Northwestern Railroad will be giving tours of

the century-old roundhouse on North Main Street, Saturday, July 13, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.. the tour will include trivia and discussion on the past, present and future of the Chadron Railroad. the tour is free. Open-toed shoes are not recommended for the tour.

Fur Trade Days RegattaChadron State Park is the place to be on Sunday, July 14.

At 2:00 p.m. the wackiest competition ever happens with contestants competing individually and as teams in canoe races, paddle boat races, and maybe even a raft race. This event, sponsored by the Chadron Kiwanis Club, will test century-old skills. It’s all for fun, fun for all ages and prizes will be awarded in different categories.
