As you can see, we have a lot of exciting things happening at Congregation Kol Ami starting this month…we look forward to seeing you at Shul!

The future is here, we are it, Avi Elias President – Sulam 50

ByachadBy Avi Elias, President

It’s hard to believe summer is almost over! As it says in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens...” This is the time of year for preparations to be in full swing: preparations to return our children to school, preparations

for the High Holy Days and preparations to receive our new Rabbi!

We are very excited to welcome Rabbi Siegel and his wife, Dr. Ellen Lefkowitz, to Tampa and Congregation Kol Ami! I, personally, am very excited to begin to work with Rabbi Siegel on a wide array of items – strategic planning, the long-term Rabbi search application, membership growth, and many programmatic enhancements to our congregational life! I am hopeful that we will have a full house to welcome Rabbi Siegel for his first Shabbat – Friday, August 4.

We will host a luncheon to welcome Rabbi Siegel and Ellen on Saturday, August 5, and a Meet & Greet, co-sponsored by Brotherhood and Sisterhood on Sunday, August 6, followed by our annual Kol Ami Day at the Rays!

Thank you and Yasher Koach to Cantor Beth, Mitch Weiss, Kalman Pila, Mark Jaffe, and all of our Congregants who helped lead services, make minyanim, and read Torah and Haftarah while we were without a Rabbi and while Cantor Beth was visiting our children at Camp Ramah Darom and taking a brief vacation. Kol Ami truly is a highly participatory synagogue – services are always so full of ruach when we have so many people lending their voices to lead us!

As you read in my July Board Update e-mail, we are embarking upon the Data Collection process of our Long-Term Rabbi Search Process. Our electronic survey will be going out soon, followed by Focus Groups at the synagogue. Not only will this data be used to help us complete the Rabbinical Assembly Application, it will also inform our Strategic Planning Process. Your partici-pation is critical!

We will end August - the start of our busy season – with our annual Kick Off event, August 20, 2017! We look forward to showcasing our various committees and their plans for the upcoming year. There are so many ways to get involved – committee participation or just coming to their events! We also hope you will join us for a tour of our newly-renovated Kol Yeladim Religious School! A very special THANK YOU and a hearty YASHER KOACH to Mike Korenvaes, Jennifer Halls, Cantor Beth, the Chai Guys and the many wonderful volunteers who worked countless hours, for their hard work and effort to modernize our religious school building!

We thank you for your efforts and dedication to Torah study. Todah Rabbah!

Request from Cantor BethPlease keep me informed of significant events in your family life. It is my desire to be of help and service to you in times of special need. It is especially important that I know of those in the hospital, and assisted living or nursing homes, so that they may be included in a prayer for recovery at Shabbat Services.

Please join us for our next Howard Kanter Kiddush Fund Luncheon on Saturday, August 12, 2017. These complimentary luncheons will be catered by Edibles by Ethel and will also be open to non-members in the greater Jewish Community.

Although members are not required to RSVP to attend, we do ask that any non-members who plan to attend contact the Kol Ami office at (813) 962-6338 to make reservations so we can prepare appropriately.

The Kiddush Fund, created by Kol Ami member, Howard Kanter (z”l), is now providing one Kiddush Luncheon per month on a Shabbat that does not have a Kiddush Luncheon sponsored by members or another committee of the synagogue.

Your extra donations (in addition to your usual contributions to Kol Ami) will help insure this effort for years to come. Donors will be recognized in the Weekly Watch and Shabbat Shalom the week of the sponsored luncheon.

We hope to see you on August 12. Also, please be sure to mingle and introduce yourself to someone you don’t know at these wonderful opportunities to make new friends and enjoy fellowship with your Kol Ami family.

Howard Kanter Kiddush Fund Luncheon

As a service to our members, we are offering the

opportunity to honor loved ones’ anniversaries, birthdays,

other special occasions, or to express your gratitude for

someone’s kindness. With a donation of $25 we will

procure a quarter-page spot in the Chai Lites.

Mah tovu, which means “how good!”, is a phrase that originates in the Torah, in Numbers 24:5. It is a spontaneous exclamation of joy. As we celebrate the 100th year of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, we count our many blessings as individuals within the community of Israel.

The pin, featuring the number 100 in raised letters and encased in silver frame is a treasured keepsake of the Women’s League centennial celebration to wear with pride!

For information, please contact Gwen Niehoff at [email protected] or (813) 695-1723.

Thank you to Sheila Bush, Susan Elias, Cindy Koren-vaes, Bonnie Miele, Gwen Niehoff and Lisa Teblum for making all the treats this month.

Finally, this was also Sisterhood’s Instal-lation of Officers for the 2017-18 year: The installer was Jill Tomar, Florida Region President.

It was a busy and lovely day for all thanks to the hard work of the committee headed by Gwen Niehoff. Committee members included Sheila Bush, Debbi Eisenstadt, Beth Gaffney, Nancy Graff, Cindy Korenvaes, Susan Leibowitz, Sheri Peterson, Sylvia Richman and Lisa Teblum. Ladies, you were greatly appreciated!

On June 4th, about 50 women came to honor Carol Tarica as our Sisterhood’s Woman of Achieve-ment honoree for Torah Fund. Carol has been involved

with our Sisterhood since moving to Tampa from Michigan. She has served as Torah Fund Chair, Membership V.P., Parliamentarian, and currently is Trea-surer. Our Sisterhood is so fortunate to call Carol one of our own!

This was also a time to recognize all our Torah Fund benefactors for 2016-17. This year we had 30 benefactors. Torah Fund benefits and supports JTS – Rabbinical and Cantorial Schools; Ziegler Rabbinical School; Solomon Schecter Rabbinical School in Israel as well as the Rabbinical School in Argentina. If you are interested in becoming a benefactor for this year, please contact Gwen Niehoff, our Torah Fund Chair. We were fortunate to have Cathy Swerdlow, Torah Fund V.P. for the Florida Region of Women’s League as our keynote speaker.

A Mazelgram is a quick and easy way to send your Kol Ami friends and family Rosh Hashanah greet-ings. Just look through the list sent to your home in the mail (alphabet-ized by first names), indicate the ones you want to send greetings to, fill out the first page (the order form) and return with your check to Kol Ami. Each individual name you choose costs $1.25. You even have

Mazelgrams

the option to send greetings to the whole congregation for $118! That is less than 30 cents per greeting! You can even select a greeting for your mazelgrams.

By supporting Mazelgrams, you take care of purchasing, writing, address-ing, and mailing out all those cards in one easy step. You also support Kol Ami Sisterhood in being able to do many of the things we do for the synagogue throughout the year.

Remember to watch the deadline of September 7 and get your Mazel-grams order in early! Send all Mazel-grams to Sisterhood c/o Congrega-tion Kol Ami. If you need the list of Mazelgrams, they are available in the office.

Kol Ami Brotherhood

The Brotherhood of Kol Ami has a great board consisting of, in alphabetical order, Mike Korenvaes, Al Lenok, Ben Miele, Michael Miller, Julian

Melamed, Fred Perez, Yoav Rappaport, Mario Rodriguez, Marc Tindell and Jon Zimmer. Our mission is to provide active support, service and spirit to Congrega-tion Kol Ami. This includes developing male leadership to allow men to grow in the organization and ultimately, to get involved in the larger picture of Congre-gation Kol Ami. Follow us on Facebook at The Brotherhood of Kol Ami or visit our webpage at https://kolami.org/get-involved/brotherhood.

For those of you who may not know me, let me introduce myself. I’m Barry Dvorchik. My wife, Sue, and I moved here from the Northeast in 2000 and joined Kol Ami. I owned a consulting business and spent the greater part of 13 years out of town. During my time in Tampa, I served as chair of the Kol Ami dues committee and have served two terms on Kol Ami’s Board of Trustees. In previous lives, I have been involved in Brotherhood activities at two different synagogues. Both were fully integrated and active organizations and that is what, as President of Brotherhood, I seek to emulate for Kol Ami.

We look forward to holding a number of social events where men (and their families) can come together and chill and where new members get to know the Kol Ami family and each other. In addi-tion, this year we are joining the Federa-tion of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC). FJMC is the international umbrella organiza-tion for a confederation of more than 250 men’s auxiliaries serving 25,000

Kol Ami Brotherhood (cont’d)men throughout the United States and Canada. Although our chapters are concentrated in North America, the influence of FJMC’s programs and contributions is felt worldwide. FJMC’s mission is to involve Jewish men in Jewish life, but its influence goes far beyond men in the Conservative / Masorti Movement. Their programs have a profound impact on our congregations, our youth, and world Jewry.

By joining the Brotherhood of Kol Ami, you have the opportunity to meet the vast range of needs of our members.

You have the opportunity to be with others in settings which encourage people to truly connect and bond with each other. Whether it is a brunch meet-ing with a compelling speaker, doing a mitzvah for others, serving the syna-gogue community or purely social occa-sions, The Brotherhood of Kol Ami will surely be a way for you to find fulfillment at Kol Ami.

If you are currently a member of the Brotherhood, I thank you and look forward to your continued support and volunteerism. If you are not a member

of the Brotherhood, I ask that you con-sider giving us an opportunity by joining and attending our activities. You may find one of these interesting enough to become a Brotherhood volunteer. The new, invigorated Brotherhood of Kol Ami has opportunities for fun, camaraderie, and fulfillment at Kol Ami.

Congregation Kol Ami • August 2017 • Av / Elul 5777 11

Spirit! The Hebrew word is ruach and it appears over 300 times in the Torah. It is the spirit that sustains a person or organization. It can be impaired or diminished or it can be renewed and increased.

Ruach was present at Brotherhood’s recent social activity, the Beer Tasting Party. It spread to our first general membership meeting on June 4th and the ruach continues with the Rabbi’s Meet & Greet and Rays baseball game on August 6th. It is with that in mind that for this High Holiday season the Brotherhood of Kol Ami is launching Color the Congregation. Our goal is to fill the synagogue with ruach via bright colors. To accomplish this we will be distributing brightly colored kippot to all Brotherhood members. Please wear your kippah whenever you attend services, especially on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Come join us as we spread ruach throughout Kol Ami. Participate in one of our upcoming events. Join one of our committees. When everyone pitches in, no job is either too big or too time-consuming. Have an idea for a program or activity, contact any of the Brotherhood Board members. Our goal is to make being a member of Kol Ami a warm, inviting and fulfilling experience.

Let the New Year 5778 be one of peace and simchas to all.

Participating in social action and Tikkun Olam, or “repairing the world,” is one the many ways to honor the command-ments and traditions of the Torah. Some people join a community such as ours to fulfill a purpose that is far greater than themselves and seek outlets for their kindness and boundless energy. At Kol Ami, we have a tradition of caring for our neighbors in need, our military service men and women, and the environ- ment through the Social Action Com-mittee. We coordinate programs and projects which help others in our com-munity and beyond. In the past, our programs included collecting personal items to be distributed to Tampa Jewish Family Services, The Spring, The Joshua House and care packages to serving military abroad. We have collected dona-tions to set up apartments for the home-less and celebrated Earth Day through recycling projects.

This year we are planning to participate in Reverse Tashlich (September 24th) through Tikkun HaYam (Hillel Suncoast), Metropolitan Ministries holiday distri- bution tent (December, date TBA), Operation Gratitude, and participation in Mitzvah Day (Congregation Beth Am).

As Chair, my goal for the Social Action committee is to put together a variety of well-organized events which bring together our synagogue departments (Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Youth, Or Chadash, Chavurah, Education etc.) with other surrounding organizations (Churches, Ministries, Beth Am, Hillel of Suncoast, TJFS, etc). We need you to join the Social Action Committee, as a committee member, an event chair, and/or active participant. If you have a great idea for an event, we can work to make it happen! We can make use of your skill and passion to help others; it can be done from your desktop and

phone, or perhaps come out with your cutting sheers and rakes as we help an elderly member of our community

Shalom, Chaverim! Under the leadership of our wonderful new Youth Director, Rachel Degani, we would like to invite all interested people to join the Kol Ami Youth Advisory Council. We will meet several times a year to get direct input from people with a wide variety of ideas and experiences, as we continue to develop the best youth groups in the region! Youth are encouraged to attend so they can share with us what directions they would like to see their youth groups go.

The first meeting will immediately follow the Kol Ami Open House on Sunday, August 20th at 1:00 p.m. in the Jay Fink Library.

If you are unable to attend but would still like to be part of the Council, please email Mitch at [email protected]

We hope you can make it! David Berger

Jenna BenjaminAugust 19, 2017 / 27 Av 5777

Jenna Benjamin is going into 8th grade at both Farnell Middle School and Kol Yeladim Religious School. A straight-A student, Jenna is a member of Farnell’s National Junior

Honor Society. During the summer, she is also an enthusiastic Camp Ramah camper going into her 5th summer. Jenna has worked very hard preparing to become a Bat Mitzvah on August 19, 2017. She loves the feeling of accomplishment that results from each skill as she masters it. In fact, she believes that becoming a bat mitzvah is the greatest achievement of her life so far.

Jenna has family and friends coming to Tampa to help her celebrate her big day. Her Grandpa Richard is coming from Newton, Mass., her cousin from Israel along with his two daughters, and several of her Camp Ramah friends from all over, though mostly Atlanta and Nashville, will be there also. Following in her mother’s footsteps of volunteering for good causes, Jenna’s mitzvah project involved making blankets for dogs and donating them to several dog shelters like the Humane Society. Mazal tov to Jenna!

If you wish to have a life cycle event included in the ChaiLites, please contact Christie Self at least two weeks before the 1st-of-the-month publication date at: [email protected] or 813-962-6338

Kids’ Konnections & Youth Groups

The Youth Director for 2017-2018 will be Rachel Degani. Rachel’s vision is to facilitate and foster a youth movement dedicated to growth, friendships, and

self-expression. She is passionate about building upon a foundation of leader-ship and success: a youth movement that works together to embrace service and radiates the overarching purpose to make the world a better place.

Rachel grew up in South Florida with a childhood rich in enthusiasm for Judaism expressed through music, art, debate, youth group, summer camp, and a love for learning. Growing up in an Israeli household with a Rabbi for a father and a Cantor for a mother, Judaism and Israel were at the forefront of many values and philosophies instilled in her.

Rachel’s Jewish identity was further fostered with summers in Jewish drama camp and travel camp through the JCC, as well as Jewish sleep away camp. As a teenager, she was very involved with the B’nai Brith Youth Organization (BBYO) and held various positions on the Board while working with her parents as a Hebrew school teacher. In college, she worked as a Hebrew school teacher, B’nai mitzvah tutor, and youth advisor for middle and high school youth groups in Orlando.

She moved to Tampa to earn her mas-ter’s degree in Communication Disorders and currently works as a speech therapist in the Tampa Bay area. She has been teaching in the Kol Yeladim Religious School at Kol Ami for 5 years and is very excited and honored to embark on this new journey as Youth Director.
