Dream Big, Start Small: Small Business WeekEvery year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.

More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.

As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness.

Roundtablecontinued from front page

Secretary Manderino opened by reinforcing the state government’s dedication to workforce development, explaining that her department is focused on matching the tools and resources of the state government, including job search tools like PA CareerLink, to the needs of the manufacturing industry.

Much of the morning’s discussion centered on the struggle to find and maintain local talent, changing the stigma of jobs in manufacturing, and the draw of the Hanover area to the millennial generation.

“Our biggest challenge is also our greatest strength,” stated Secretary Davin. “We have a great, well-trained workforce in Pennsylvania. The challenge is in maintaining that workforce; the current workforce is quickly approaching retirement age, leaving manufacturers to fill the gaps with a new generation.”

Many local employers cited their difficulty in recruiting college graduates to careers within the industry, specifically to supervisory positions and those within the engineering and technology fields. These positions offer competitive salaries and benefits, but entry level candidates will start at third shift, something that many college graduates are not willing to do, explained representatives from both Synder’s-Lance and Utz Quality Foods. Employers also noted the quality of life factor and the desire of millennials to work and live in an urban environment.

Ken Kirkpatrick, owner of KLK Welding, Inc., emphasized the strides that Hanover has taken in developing programs that educate students about the careers and opportunities in manufacturing. Kirkpatrick has been instrumental in the development of a welding school at South Western High School, and he noted additional programs set in place locally including the metal shop at Hanover High School, a mechatronics program offered by HACC-Gettysburg Campus, and the Intro. to Manufacturing course offered by the Hanover Chamber in conjunction with local school districts and employers.

“It’s important that the schools and industry are working together,” said Kirkpatrick. “We need to catch kids and their parents at an early age to show them what a career in manufacturing looks like in the Hanover area.”

Reaching out to local students and their parents remained a theme throughout the remaining discussion, with participants discussing the urgency to fill imminent vacancies. Many noted that making manufacturing more attractive to the future workforce is crucial, as is highlighting the increase in tech jobs within the field, including IT Services, Mechatronics, and 3-D Design.

“Communicating these opportunities to parents and educators regarding students’ choices in the Hanover area is crucial,” said Laird. “The community will continue to foster partnerships between education and industry, and focus on ways to address

the need for entry-level, skilled, semi-skilled and professional careers in Hanover manufacturing across the board.”

6 Member Spotlights

On April 11, KBW, a Stifel company and a full-service investment bank and broker-dealer that specializes in the financial services sector, named ACNB Corporation to its 2015 KBW Bank Honor Roll. This Bank Honor Roll features the top 18 U.S. banking institutions based upon superior performance as determined by KBW-defined methodology.

Thomas A. Ritter, President & Chief Executive Officer of ACNB Corporation, commented, “Our long-standing commitments to bank safety and soundness and to effective risk management practices have positioned ACNB Corporation among the most consistent and reliable institutions in the banking industry. ACNB Corporation’s banking subsidiary, ACNB Bank, observed its 159th anniversary on April 11, 2016. To be recognized on the 2015 KBW Bank Honor Roll for the third year in a row is a strong testimonial to colleagues who have served before us, and to those who work here now. We are grateful and honored to be recognized by KBW as the only banking institution in Pennsylvania to appear on the 2015 list.”

Bank Honor Roll winners are publicly-traded banking institutions with more than $500 million in total assets that meet the following three conditions: no annual loss reported in net income per share before extraordinary items over the past 10 years; 2015 annual reported net income per share before extraordinary items equal to or greater than peak net income per share over the past 10 years; and, consecutive increases in net income per share before extraordinary items since 2001.

KBW found that 18 banking institutions, out of nearly 400 total companies screened, now qualify for inclusion on the annual KBW Bank Honor Roll, down from 25 institutions in the prior year.

“The past ten years, which included the financial crisis, have been one of the most challenging decades in the history of U.S. banking,” noted Fred Cannon, KBW Director of Research, in the KBW press release announcing the 2015 Bank Honor Roll. “The Bank Honor Roll allows KBW to recognize banking companies that have differentiated themselves from their peers and succeeded during these volatile times while simultaneously positioning themselves for further growth in what continues to be a challenging operating environment.”

According to KBW, in terms of stock price performance, Bank Honor Roll companies significantly outperformed the banking industry during the five-year period between 2010 and 2015. Thus far, 2016 has proved to be challenging for bank stock performance, but the KBW Bank Honor Roll members continue to outperform their peers.

In May, we celebrate National Small Business Week with the Small Business Administration and communities like ours all across the country. The theme this year is “Dream Big, Start Small,” which is so fitting for our downtown community of small business owners and Main Street Hanover too. The best small business owners will tell you “it all started with a big idea”. Those big ideas have to be nurtured and supported. Resources are available from the Chamber and Main Street Hanover that can help take those big ideas and turn them into the small steps to get started. From business planning, location scouting, and marketing assistance, we can help you start on your journey to being a small business owner.

Main Street Hanover is no different than many new small businesses. Our initiative started with a big idea to collaboratively work together to improve the economic capacity of downtown Hanover. Through support from important groups locally, the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce and the Borough of

Hanover, and assistance from the York County Economic Alliance and PEDYC, we’ve been able to do some incredible things in the past three years, making big strides in moving the downtown forward into a time of renewal and growth.

We look forward to showing you those accomplishments in our 2015 Annual Report. Visit our website to download your copy today. For information about Main Street Hanover’s plans for Small Business week, visit our website news section at mainstreethanover.org.

New Caches on the Geo TrailOver 300 visitors were on a hunt over these past two years to find all of the caches on the Hanover Geo Trail. You may have been one of them! Main Street Hanover is excited to be launching another set of caches on the second Hanover Geo Trail.

What is Geocaching, you may ask? Modern adventurers can use their GPS devices to navigate the path to elusive ‘caches’, which are hidden containers holding a logbook for the hunters to sign. Geocaches are hidden in landmarks, public parks, and even parking lots and businesses. All geocaches are officially registered with www.geocaching.com. Participants will need to register on the website to retrieve coordinates and other location information. Registration on geocaching.com is free.

A Geocache app can be downloaded on smart phones, enabling the cacher to navigate to caches, and find additional caches nearby. Before setting out to find the caches, you will need an official passport booklet. Passports are free and can be downloaded from the Hanover Chamber’s website, or by visiting the Hanover Chamber/Main Street Hanover office.

Each cache will contain a unique code to be used in your passport as proof of finding the cache. Cachers who complete 85 percent of the trail or more will receive a commemorative coin, made specifically for the geo trail, which features the Main Street Hanover logo. There is no set deadline for completion, and participants may collect their coin until the supply runs out.

If you are interested in being a part of the Hanover GeoTrail booklet, opportunities for advertisement are available for $150 and $300 an ad.

BeautificationMain Street Hanover is again organizing this year’s Downtown Beautification Program. Spring is almost here and we are looking forward to beautifying Hanover’s downtown with professional planters and hanging baskets.

Please note that all baskets and planters will be located in Center Square. This program also includes maintenance, so that your flowers will look beautiful throughout the season.

Keystone Community Façade GrantsMain Street Hanover’s Design Committee is happy to present a user friendly update of the downtown design guidelines. As a designated Keystone Community, Main Street Hanover was awarded a $40,000 Keystone Façade Grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). Main Street Hanover is looking to engage property and business owners downtown to use these funds to update their facades or make necessary improvements to their storefronts.

The MSH Downtown Improvement Program is designed to help revitalize our main streets and downtown areas. In communities across the nation, maintaining, preserving and enhancing our architectural heritage has fostered community pride and helped establish healthy business environments. Historic architecture in Hanover and surrounding communities is one of our strongest assets.

Working to restore and improve these buildings in a sensitive manner will be a key to future community revitalization. These updated design guidelines have been developed to respect the original features of historic buildings and their streetscapes and at the same time encourage creativity. We encourage you to learn more about this program by visiting our website, mainstreethanover.org.

Main Street Mini-GolfMain Street Hanover is excited to again present this fun mini-golf event! Businesses in the downtown will create unique golf holes in their business and visitors will play the holes while they walk from location to location around downtown. This fun, family friendly event, will be one you won’t want to miss!
