Chair’s Corner

In late March, the Chamber released results of the 2015 economic outlook survey. While making progress, the highest-rated issue was again talent

attraction and retention. While the economy is leveling in our community and state, the demand for employees remains at an all-time high. Since this was identified as a top priority in the Chamber strategic plan, I want to point out some specific ways the Chamber is addressing this issue.

First, in this issue of the Connection is an article on the BMDA led effort to “Make a Mark” in Bismarck-Mandan. This online media campaign started in mid-March and is generating substantial traffic to the BMDA website. The goal is to gain the attention of employees in specific, identified areas. This effort is part of the prosperity agenda between the Chamber and BMDA created as a result of the strategic planning process.

Second, the Chamber is leading an aggressive legislative agenda. This includes advocating for funding to enhance childcare facilities, affordable housing and internship programs. Other issues garnering attention from the Chamber are tax policy, infrastructure funding and the Department of Commerce budget for thebiennium.

Third, the Chamber is assisting Bismarck Industries and Bismarck Futures in pursuing the proposed Five South project. This multi-use development will include apartments and amenities with an eye to young professionals, retail, restaurants and bars and, if all goes well, a full-service hotel. This effort, led by members of the business community, is a visionary project to change the perception of the community and position us to effectively compete for young professionals.

Fourth, on April 9, the Chamber is hosting its first “New Resident Welcome.” This event will showcase events, organizations and things to do in the community for new employees and their families. The Chamber is consistently asked how to engage new employees in the community and this is our answer to that question. Please encourage your new employees to attend this event at Shi-loh Christian School in their new Commons Area.

Until next month, think spring...and be sure to file your taxes by April 15.

- Rick Matteson

At any given time of the year, Bismarck-Mandan has between 3,300 and 4,000 open job positions. “Even if we took every person who is on the street today without a job, we would still have open jobs,” said Brian Ritter, president of the Bismarck-Mandan Development Association (BMDA).

Recognizing the workforce shortage facing the community, BMDA and the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce teamed up to create the Make Your Mark Campaign. Launched on March 2, the online marketing campaign is designed to recruit talent from outside North Dakota and encourage individuals to relocate to Bismarck-Mandan. “The primary objective of the campaign is to get people from outside the market to come here and to fill those jobs,” said Ritter.

Judy Sauter, BMDA’s marketing and research director, said the campaign is similar to the “Find the Good Life in North Dakota” campaign promoted by the North Dakota Department of Commerce, except with a focus on specific job candidates and the Bismarck-Mandan community.

“Bismarck and Mandan, like the rest of North Dakota, have been leaders in job creation and have low unemployment rates. The downside to these achievements is that our businesses face a chronic workforce shortage that is particularly acute for skilled and professional jobs,” said Richard Matteson, chair of the Chamber’s board of directors.

According to Heather Jones, chair of BMDA, North Dakota is competing for talent with communities and states from across the nation. “Make Your Mark is unique from any other community campaign in our region. It sets us apart from the fray and details what our thriving communities have to offer,” she said.

BMDA led the creation of the campaign, and the Chamber offered feedback during the development stage and is now assisting in the campaign’s marketing efforts. Matteson says he appreciates BMDA allowing the Chamber to be involved.

“That sort of communication is a good example of the frequent collaboration between the Chamber and BMDA in areas where we have common interests and can coordinate our efforts,” he said.

Those involved say the key to the campaign’s success is prioritizing the area’s most needed skills sets. “We know that we can’t fill all of those thousands of jobs, and we can’t address everything. In order to try and make a difference, we wanted to focus,” said Sauter.

BMDA then spoke with North Dakota Job Service about what occupations are most needed in the area. “We looked at ones that, for the most part, you cannot get the training here in Bismarck-Mandan,” added Sauter.

The five occupations included in the campaign are nurses, commercial drivers, engineers, diesel mechanics and skilled trades such as welders, plumbers and electricians. Sauter said although the campaign is concentrated only on five occupations, the potential benefits could reach all area industries. “If we attract someone who is an engineer, he or she may have a spouse who needs a job. They may have kids in high school who can fill some of the part-time retail jobs. So it is a ripple effect,” she noted.

Jones, who also owns City Air Mechanical, said the business has seen employment applications dwindle in the last few years. “We have always used BMDA’s Economy At A Glance in our efforts to share community information with potential talent, but the Make Your Mark Campaign really complements our efforts by reaching individuals we may not be able to reach on our own and directing them to community resources.”

Campaign organizers also faced the challenge of how to find and contact desired potential employees. According to Sauter, organizers first looked at where alumni from North Dakota high schools and colleges were living since graduation. They then collaborated with KK Bold to consider additional variables, including locations of colleges and universities that train students in the target areas, areas with high unemployment rates and states with a similar climate to North Dakota. “You might get a person from Alabama to move here for a job, but in our conversations with employers, those people are not going to stay. So if you are from Wisconsin, the weather is not going to bother you,” said Sauter.

The 10 focus states resulting from these efforts include California, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. The campaign will now use the advertising capabilities of LinkedIn, Facebook and Google Search to further narrow its focus to specific individuals.

BMDA has designed five separate advertisements, each concerning one of the targeted professions. When potential applicants contact BMDA, the organization is prepared to help interested parties connect with different companies in Bismarck-Mandan.

Sauter explained the target audience is people with connections to North Dakota. “We found out it is important these people are familiar with North Dakota and they have been here before, so there is more of a reason for them to come back and stay.”

This focus on North Dakota connections may help the Wallwork Truck Center in Bismarck, said Curry Quenette, branch manager. “Technicians are in demand everywhere right now, so they have their pick of where they want to live. It’s hard to compete with a shop that’s near their hometown or in a more desirable climate,” he said.

Continued from page 5Designing a flexible campaign, which focuses on the precise needs of the communities was important, said Ritter. During the 16-week scheduled run of the first segment of the campaign, BMDA will monitor whether one advertising medium is working better than the others, allowing their strategy to be altered, if necessary, mid-campaign.

“The great thing about the first phase of the Make Your Mark Campaign is that it is measurable and flexible,” said Jones. With information such as the number of impressions and website visits available, BMDA can quickly adjust or shift direction. “In addition to the online part of the campaign, the BMDA plans to use the Make Your Mark Campaign in recruitment job fairs, collaborations with the Chamber and North Dakota Job Service, and even working with the North Dakota Department of Commerce to enhance the Good Life campaign.”

The timing of the campaign in early spring was planned carefully to allow families time to begin relocating in the summer, said Sauter. After the first segment of the campaign is complete, BMDA will assess the future direction of the Make Your Mark Campaign. This could mean a follow-up campaign in the fall or next spring, she added.

“Employee recruitment and retention are priorities for both organizations, and both are developing complementary pieces of a long-term solution,” said Matteson. “If Make Your Mark can persuade prospective employees to take a closer look at our communities, they will find a lot to like.”

The goal of the campaign is to create an awareness that there are opportunities in Bismarck and Mandan, said Ritter, noting the hope is North Dakota citizens will become more knowledgeable about the opportunities available and become ambassadors to friends and relatives interested in moving to the area.

“We know where we need the jobs, and we think we know who the people are,” said Ritter. “Now we just have to go get them.”

Q: tell us about yourself and your role within the organization. A: Currently I have become the ND Regional Manager and I was the General Manager of My Place Hotel-Bismarck for the past two years. Q: Briefly tell us the history of My Place Hotel.A: The visionary team behind My Place Hotels of America has been involved in nearly every aspect of the hotel business for almost 40 years. My Place Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO Ron Rivett co-founded Super 8 Motels Inc. in Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1974, along with long-time friend Dennis Brown. After selling the wildly successful Super 8 Motels System in 1993, Ron remained in the hotel business, developing, building and operating Super 8 motels and other branded properties as a franchisee until 2011.

Ron’s grandson and My Place Co-Founder President & COO Ryan Rivett has grown up in the hotel business, and has learned it from every angle. Since graduating from Northern State University in Aberdeen, Ryan has been extensively involved in all facets of both the hotel and multifamily apartment business, from design and development to financing, construction, and management. Ryan’s first hand experience in both industries provides a unique prospective on the economy extended stay hotel concept that has become My Place Hotels of America.

Q: How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted your company?A: We enjoy being in the Bismarck-Mandan market because of its growth. The progress of the community is exciting and has helped us see steady occupancy levels. With that, we too hope that we can be a positive impact for other businesses to grow and develop within the community.

Q: What differentiates your company from its competitors?A: At all My Place Hotel locations you will find a clean, comfortable room, friendly staff, and an affordable nightly, weekly or monthly rate. My Place fits in a niche that is truly underserved today. We’ve eliminated the inefficient, under-utilized amenities and focused on what’s really important; a well equipped room and a good night’s rest.My Place Hotel’s are perfectly suited for short or long term stays with our spacious, well-designed properties. Our guest rooms provide all of the comforts of home including My Kitchen; complete with two burner cooktop, microwave, and full refrigerator/freezer with ice maker. Q: What industry trends are taking place?A: The overall lodging market is performing well, development costs remain relatively stable and there is financing available for new projects.Extended stay hotels, as a segment, are gaining in popularity with both consumers because of the flexibility they offer and with developers, due to their efficient operating platforms. - Terry Kline, EVP Franchise Development Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that you’ve had to deal with?A: After an extended economic downturn, competition to bring new hotels into markets is strong. Technology is rapidly changing and keeping up with the new channels that attract customer awareness is very important. Having a strong social media marketing presence through such channels as Facebook and Twitter are absolutely imperative. - Terry Kline, EVP Franchise Development

Q: What does the future of your business look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?A: All the leading lodging industry research groups are calling for a continued environment of growth over the next four to six years. The industry is responding as quickly as possible by the development of new rooms, but demand growth presently continues to exceed the supply of new product coming into the marketplace overall. Because of this supply and demand scenario, simple economics will tell us that room rates will more than likely continue to increase. -Terry Kline, EVP Franchise Development Q: My Place Hotel has been a member since 2012, why do you continue to renew each year?A: Being a Chamber Member is valuable to us because we get to interact with other businesses in town. We also like to support local organizations that support community growth and development. It’s imperative that as many people as possible know about this new brand we’ve created. If they are happy to see it in their hometown, maybe they’ll give us a try in another community like Fargo or Grand Forks. Q: What should Chamber members know about your company that may assist them within theirs?A: If they are bringing anyone to the community we have very desirable rooms; new, clean, comfortable, at very reasonable rates.

Dakota Carrier Network (DCN) high-speed network allows business data to travel across the state or around the globe with over 40,000 miles of fiber optics in North Dakota.

Our state leads the nation in the amount of fiber deployed per subscriber. Some of their services are provided to hospitals, government, financial institutions. They also host a data center for Netflix and Google.

The business side of marketing was presented to the class and examples were given regarding constructing client images, building trust, public relations vs. advertising and how to get your message across.

When using social media, have a strategy as to who you are and what you want to present. On March 9, Bismarck Public Schools heard recommendations from a demographer on how to deal with the projected growth of 22-hundred new students in the next five years for an average annual growth of 440 students in grades K-12.

Once the Liberty addition is completed (100 seats) and if all elementary classrooms are filled to maximum capacity, the district will have room for 997 elementary children next year. With an average K-5 enrollment increase of 200 each year through 2020, little space would be left available.

Superintendent Tamara Uselman says, “Most of our open spaces in grades K-5 are in our older schools in more established neighborhoods, while newer schools on the edge of development are full to overflowing.”

The demographer, who looks at a variety of growth factors such as birth rates, construction, home purchases, oil prices, etc., predicts that by the school year 2019-2020 classrooms in the district will be overcapacity in grades K-12 by more than 300 students, even with the addition of four classrooms at Liberty this summer and the opening of Legacy High School in the fall.

At the elementary level, Liberty enrollment will continue to be an issue, even with four more classrooms. Highland Acres, Lincoln and Solheim will also experience more students than their current maximum capacity. The largest pressure point will be at the middle level, which will be overcapacity starting next school year.

To handle future enrollment growth, the Bismarck School Board will be looking at ideas such as redrawing boundaries, busing children to schools outside of their neighborhood attendance area, using portables, building classroom additions, buying land for future schools, reconfiguring schools or grade levels, and/or moving students into Hughes as Legacy students will be out of the building by fall.

The last time demographer Rob Schwarz with RSP and Associates made predictions for enrollment growth in Bismarck Public Schools, his projections were 99.5 percent accurate.

Local Government and Community Access programs can now be viewed in full high definition (HD) in the Bismarck – Mandan area on cable channels 602 and 612 respectively. The Government and Community Access channels are managed by Dakota Media Access (DMA) and are available on the Midcontinent Communications cable system. Viewers can now watch programming in either HD or SD on cable, or on the website to watch live streams. Government meetings and most community programs are also archived, allowing viewers to search for and view on demand at www.freetv.org.

“The time was right to provide this upgrade in quality that puts us on par with other cable programming,” said Jack McDonald, DMA’s Board President. “DMA has been producing program content in HD for many years, but we were not able to transmit in HD. Now, with the cost of HD transmission equipment becoming more affordable, combined with Midcontinent Communication generously providing us the channel capacity, we are able to bring the HD service to the Bismarck-Mandan community.”

HD equipment upgrades were also made to both the Bismarck and Mandan city hall meetings rooms. New HD cameras were installed, as well as a new HD switching systems, audio controls, and titling software in each control room. The Government Access channel presents over 250 live municipal meetings and public affairs programs that take place in Bismarck and Mandan, and Burleigh and Morton counties, annually.

“This HD upgrade is more than a beauty makeover,” said Mary Van Sickle, executive director, DMA. “It conveys that our programming is valuable, timely, and relevant. The reality is that our successful HD migration—which puts us at the vanguard of Community Media Centers nationwide—allows us to provide both a higher quality viewing experience and an enhanced representation of our government and community.”

North Dakota’s very first “Star of The Voice,” Gwen Sebastian, is set to headline Medora’s first Country Music Concert Series when she takes the stage on July 4. The Hazen duo, Tigirlily, opens the concert series with their performance on June 26 and Watford City native and well-known acoustic artist, Jessie Veeder, will perform a special, full-band concert on July 18.

Limited time pre-sale tickets are available now at Medora.com/CountryConcerts. All three concerts take place at 3:30pm MDT prior to that evening’s showing of the Medora Musical, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary Season all summer long.

After years of touring, Sebastian got her big break on season two of NBC’s “The Voice”— where Blake Shelton, CeeLo Green, and Adam Levine all fought to have her on their team – but her success didn’t stop there. Since the show, she’s toured with her coach, Blake, with country superstars Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley on the Locked and Reloaded tour, has played the Grand Ole Opry, and is currently on the road with Lambert before she heads to Medora. Sebastian’s duet single with Shelton, “My Eyes,” hit #1 on the Country Music Charts in 2014 and has sold over a half-million copies.

While Sebastian has performed and recorded with some of Country Music’s A-list, for her there’s nothing better than coming home. “Coming back and performing at home really is the highlight of the tour for me,” she says. “I love and am so thankful to be touring with Blake, and with Miranda, but there is something really special about performing for a theater full of friends and family and long-time supporters – you really want to put on a great show for them!

“And, growing up in Hebron, just down the road from Medora,” she continues, “if there was one stage you wanted to be on, as an artist, it was the stage of the Medora Musical, surrounded by the beautiful Badlands.”

The Hazen duo, Tigirlily, who opened for two sold-out shows in Medora last year, kick off the Medora Country Concert Series on June 26. Yet another example of great, home-grown talent from North Dakota, Tigirlily has toured continuously while producing new, original music over the last two years and may be poised to be the state’s next national sensation.

Jessie Veeder will take the stage the afternoon of July 18. Veeder, who has performed nationally and received attention across the country for her recent single “Boom Town,” has become a state favorite for her heart-felt music and writing that encompasses the love of country life and her home in western North Dakota. In her words, she is excited “ when she brings a full band together for a special, exciting show.

Robert “Bob” H. Simmers was inducted into the North Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame based on his significant contributions to aviation in North Dakota and to his community on Tuesday, March 3 during the Upper Midwest Aviation Symposium held in Fargo March 1-3. The Midwest Aviation Symposium is hosted annually by the North Dakota Aviation Council.

Simmers was born in Jamestown in 1947, into an aviation family. His parents, Francis and Irene Simmers, bought their first airplane the year he was born, maintained a grass strip on their farm east of Jamestown, and both earned their pilot’s license. As the family initially used aviation for agricultural and social purposes, Bob grew to use aviation as a means of service, activism, and to make a living.

Simmers soloed in 1963 and enjoyed the privilege of leisure flight around the farm. In 1984, he turned to aviation as a livelihood, becoming a flight instructor with instrument and multi-engine ratings. He began working as an agricultural applicator and charter pilot for Jamestown Aviation, and soon became a designated pilot examiner, playing a significant role in many pilots’ progression.

He continued to teach throughout the years and founded Bismarck Aero Center in 1990 while being actively involved in the leadership of the North Dakota Aviation Council, constantly advocating for the benefits and freedom of aviation, particularly in matters of airspace and pilot safety through practice and training.

In 2012 he was appointed by Governor Jack Dalrymple to the North Dakota Unmanned Systems Authority for the purpose of ensuring that General Aviation interests were respected in the development and integration of remotely piloted aircraft. To date, he has accumulated over 16,000 hours of flight time and has flown over 100 different makes and models of aircraft.

What is truly remarkable about Bob is his selfless nature amidst all of his accomplishments. As he looks for opportunities to protect, improve, and share aviation, he also gives rides with EAA or on his own to friends and family, raises funds for charities, speaks, writes, organizes, and gives to his community in numerous ways.

In partnership with Basin Electric’s annual “Brave the Shave” campaign to help fund childhood cancer research and fellowships, a total of 34 Kupper Automotive employees, family members and community members shaved their heads (or donated their hair) in solidarity with kids with cancer and raised money to Conquer Childhood Cancers! Kupper Automotive-Brave the Shave was held Wednesday, March 11 from 3:00pm - 5:00pm at Kupper Chevrolet in Mandan.

Kupper Automotive was proud to have in attendance the CEO of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Kathleen Ruddy, based out of Monrovia, CA. Kupper Auto owner Bob Kupper, who was one of the shavees, told Ruddy, “If I’m going to talk the talk (to my employees), I’ve got to walk the walk…I’m going to shave my head and raise some money.” Kupper also gave the option to employees at all stores

to donate vacation days where he would pay however many donated days’ wages straight to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which ended up being a great contribution to the overall fundraising goal. With donations still coming in, the dealership group, made up of Bismarck Motor Company and Kupper Chevrolet-Subaru, well surpassed their $25,000 fundraising goal, with a current total of $35,067.

The dealership looks forward to participating again next year and helping to further promote research funding for childhood cancer and helping survivors lead long and healthy lives.

Bismarck Futures, LLC, leaders of the Bismarck-Mandan business communities who are invested in the growth and development of a healthy capital city, Cardon Development Group (CDG), a Phoenix-based real estate developer with a track record of creating visionary, transformative projects, and übl Design Group, a Bismarck-based architectural and design group, announced today that the proposed project, FiveSouth, will be featured during an open house from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 2 at the Bismarck Events Center. Bismarck Futures Chairman Bruce Whittey and CDG president Steve Backman made the announcement.

“The City of Bismarck is experiencing tremendous growth. It is important to us to provide the engaged community with the opportunity to learn more about how FiveSouth will activate their downtown core,” said Backman. “We’re hosting this open house to highlight each individual component in more detail and answer questions from the citizens of Bismarck.”

The event will be open to the public and anyone who is interested in learning more about the development is encouraged to attend.

“What better way to showcase the FiveSouth development plan than to let community members hear about it directly from the project stakeholders,” said Whittey. “It is our intention to show off the dynamic residential, streetscape and lifestyle destinations that will invigorate the City of Bismarck.”

An open house is the ideal venue to display current renderings of the new streetscape, housing units, retail development, public uses and the full-service hotel. CDG will serve as the master developer, übl Design Group is the master architect and Wenck Associates will be the master engineer.

“The FiveSouth development proposal is a transformative project that will drive the downtown activation plan of Bismarck,” said Ubl. “Being a local urban design architecture group, übl is well-suited to capture the design concepts that embody the City of Bismarck. Coupled with imaginative solutions, this project will deliver highly functional spaces to the Bismarck community.”

The proposed downtown mixed-use project would provide an array of economic benefits to Bismarck and the immediate regions, including approximately 2,600 direct and indirect jobs in the metro area over the six-year construction period, according to a study conducted in 2014. Upon completion, it is estimated that FiveSouth would inject more than $130 million annually to the metro area, as well as spurred off-site visitor spending at neighborhood retail outlets, restaurants and entertainment venues.

The Open House will be held in the new concourse of the Bismarck Events Center, and guests are requested to enter at the corner of 5th Street and Front Ave.

Two Bismarck State College staff members are recipients of this year’s Jack Fellowship from the BSC Foundation Board of Trustees. The fellowship, valued at $25,000, helps BSC faculty and staff further their education, conduct research or pursue other professional development. Janet Dixon, resource development manager, will use her fellowship to complete a master’s degree in forensic psychology from the University of North Dakota. Karen Erickson, director of Admissions and Enrollment Services, is completing a doctorate in education with emphasis in occupational and adult education from North Dakota State University. Hired in 2008, Erickson started as Admissions coordinator and was named director in 2012. During that time she finished a master’s degree in education with emphasis in higher education and student affairs, also from NDSU. Her undergraduate degree from University of Minnesota is in sports and recreation management. Erickson said the terminal doctorate degree was always a long-term goal. She prefers classroom over online study and accesses NDSU classes over the statewide Interactive Video Network. “I just really like that class discussion,” said Erickson, now in her second semester while still working full-time. “It has been more challenging than I thought, but all things worth having are worth working at. I am hopeful my investment will pay off in the long run. A lot of what I’m studying is relevant to BSC.”

Dixon specializes in research and grant-writing for the Foundation. She has worked there in two seven-year stretches – 1997-2004 as administrative assistant promoted to alumni and programs coordinator, and 2007 to present as a research and grants specialist, grant development coordinator and now resource development manager. Dixon has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and two semesters completed toward her master’s. She is structuring her elective courses around education to help position her career. Dixon said the fellowship has eased the challenge of juggling work, finances and family. “I wrote the guidelines for the Jack [Fellowship] when it was set up with the Foundation,” she said, “but I never thought I would be benefiting from this. I feel it is a great honor to receive this opportunity.” The late Tom and Peg Jack, lead contributors to BSC’s Jack Science Center, endowed the Jack Fellowship in 1999. A committee appointed by the BSC Foundation selects the recipients.

The Bismarck-Mandan Young Professionals Network (YPN) presented a donation check to their non-profit partner, Special Olympics North Dakota - Bismarck, Wednesday, March 18 at Midway Lanes in Mandan.

In February, the YPN hosted their seventh annual Chill-N-Bowl tournament and surpassed all expectations by selling out for the second consecutive year. There were 26 teams, 104 bowlers, 26 crockpots and various costumes. During the event YPN raised more than $2,000 for Special Olympics North Dakota – Bismarck.

“Once again, the YPN is impacting the community in a positive way. We are so proud that we are able to partner with Special Olympics and that our members gave so generously at this event,” said Heather Welle, YPN President.

The partnership between YPN and Special Olympics allows the Bismarck chapter the opportunity to connect with young professionals from around Bismarck-Mandan while providing YPN members with service opportunities throughout the year. Since their partnership began in September YPN has held several fundraising events to benefit the organization. Additionally, YPN encourages members to direct their volunteer efforts toward Special Olympics through coaching, fundraising, chaperoning and assisting players on the field.

ConQuer kIds’ CanCerBismarck-Mandan and beyond sacrificed hair, money, time and talent today to help conquer kids’ cancer. As a result, more than 180 bald heads roam the community.

The 8th annual Brave the Shave’s signature event was held March 13 at the Missouri Valley Family YMCA. Basin Electric’s Brave the Shave Campaign culminated in a rapid hair-shaving event filled with kids and adults united to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Green hair, purple hair, short hair, long hair, to ultimately no hair, there was no shortage of spirit, spontaneity and generosity.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for life-saving childhood cancer research and funds more in childhood cancer grants than any organization except for the U.S. government. Since the Foundation’s first grants as an independent charity in 2005, St. Baldrick’s has funded more than $131 million to support the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world.

Since Basin Electric brought the “Brave the Shave campaign” to the region in 2008, more than 1,500 volunteers have shaved their heads and raised more than $1.6 million to help fund childhood cancer research and fellowships.

Several honorees families from present and past Brave the Shave events were in attendance, and some even braved the shave. Thirteen local children were honored at this year’s event.

In addition to hair cutting and head-shaving, this year’s flagship event included a photo booth, children’s crafts, silent auction, face painting, balloon creations, and local mascots, including Princess Baldina.

Joining Basin Electric as prime sponsors of this event are North American Coal, NextEra Energy, NISC, KLJ, MDU Resources Group, Inc., CHI St. Alexius Health, Great River Energy, Kupper Automotive, the Missouri Valley Family YMCA and Sanford Health. In-kind donations were provided by Spa D’Athena, Identity Salon and Hair for You.

Leading up to today were events hosted by Sanford Medical Center, the Bismarck Bobcats, Kupper Chevrolet and the Elks, where local law enforcement and fire fighters faced off in a third annual “Guns ‘N Hoses” event.

Additionally, the Brave the Shave campaign involves tandem events in Beulah, N.D.; Gillette and Wheatland, Wyo.; and Brookings, S.D. For more information, go to www.bravetheshave.coop and www.stbaldricks.org/campaigns/bravetheshave

Donations for the campaign are still being accepted and tallied. In the last eight years, Basin Electric’s Brave the Shave campaign raised more than $1.6 million for St. Baldrick’s. Last year’s campaign brought in more than $400,000.

“Every year we set the bar higher, and we’ve been fortunate to beat the previous year’s total,” Eggl says. “We’re hoping to do it again this year. Regardless of the final total, we feel great about this year’s campaign and all the good that came out of it.”

Donald Jorgensen, retired South Central District judge, was presented the Abused Adult Resource Center’s 21st annual “Love Without Fear” award Friday (Feb. 13) at Pam’s House, AARC’s emergency shelter for battered women and their children.

The award honors someone who has made a difference in the community regarding domestic violence. Presenting the award were Tamara Barber, chair of the AARC Board of Directors, and Diane Zainhofsky, AARC executive director.

Barber noted that Judge Jorgensen had been extremely fair with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in his court. She said he also had been a strong advocate for children as well, supporting the development of visitation centers, including the Family Safety Center operated by AARC. “He believed that children should be able to have visitation with both parents, and that process should be done safely,” she said.

Q: Why are Small buSineSSeS a cybercriminal’S favorite target?

a: Because small business owners are not prepared and make it easier for the criminals to access their systems. One of the biggest issues facing small business owners in the fight against cybercrime is the lack of a cybercrime plan. While 83 percent lack a formal plan, over 69 percent lack even an informal one. Over half of small business owners will never affect them. Cyber-attacks cost SMBs an average of $188,242 each incident, and nearly 2/3 of the businesses affected are out of business within the next six months. A separate study by Verizon showed that over 80 percent of small business cybercrime victims were vulnerable because of insufficient network security (wireless and password issues ranked the highest). With insecure networks and no formal plan to combat them, we make it much easier for the criminals to access our systems. A good website for tips to prevent these types of attacks can be found at http://us.norton.com/cybercrime-prevention

Q: What are the riSKS for SKin cancer and hoW can i protect mySelf?

a: Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed worldwide. Many skin cancers are curable if caught early. The major risk factor for skin cancer is sun exposure. Screening for skin cancer can be done both by the patient and by your family practice doctor or dermatologist. Skin cancers most commonly occur on those areas exposed to sun throughout our life such as the nose, ears, face, shoulders and upper back and chest. However, they can occur in any location. Skin cancers can be cured with simple techniques such as resection, laser therapy, radiation therapy and others. Unfortunately, some skin cancers are quite serious and are known as melanomas. As a patient, there are risk factors for melanoma that you can look for and bring to the attention of your physician. These are called the ABCDs of melanoma. The A stands for “Asymmetry” or one side shaped differently than the other. The B stands for “Border irregularity” where instead of being smooth and round, the border is jagged. The C for “Color variation” where you may see areas of brown, purple and red. Finally, the D stands for “Diameter” or size, where greater than 1/3 an inch is suspicious. Perform regular skin exams yourself, wear sunscreen and protective clothing, see a doctor at least once a year for a skin check, and if you see any of the suspicious signs above contact your healthcare provider.

Q: hoW can i reverSe, SloW doWn, or conceal the SignS of aging?

a: Working in the beauty industry for the past decade, there’s one thing that’s become more in demand than any other generation before, and that’s helping women age gracefully and naturally. I work daily on concealing imperfections, creating illusions, and reversing or slowing down the signs of aging of the hair, skin and nails. In this series, I’m going to share with you tips and tricks of the trade that my colleagues and I have found most helpful in looking our best and youngest selves. The skin is one of the first places to show the signs of aging. There are an array of treatments, products and even surgeries, but the two things you should start doing today to obtain younger looking skin now and in the future is to EXFOLIATE and USE SUNSCREEN.There are a number of ways to exfoliate. A monthly trip to the dermatologist for a microdermabrasion is great at removing dead skin cells. Or, if you prefer the comfort of your own home, some companies, such as Rodan and Fields Dermatologists, have created at home gadgets. Another great way to exfoliate would be to use a scrub in place of your face wash one to three times a week.Exfoliating is one of the best ways to reveal the younger looking you.And remember, always wear sunscreen.

Q: are there neW regulationS in place for a dot exam?

a: On May 21, 2014 the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandated the latest two regulations for DOT exams. The first requires all medical examiners performing the examinations to be certified and listed on the national registry. The second requires examine results be sent to the national registry.Certification requires 10 hours of training and the passing of an examination. Through this process, we as certified medical examiners develop an understanding of the specific regulations required by the DOT, and bring that knowledge to the exam process. The second regulation requires each DOT examination result be sent to a national registry, where a review process may take place. Should a driver seek a second exam after being disqualified or asked to seek further medical evaluation, the results of the second exam will be reviewed by the national registry. The medical conditions which may cause reduced or no clearance are:

• Obstructive sleep apnea• Diabetes• Heart disease• Sedating medication use• Strokes and mini-strokes

Through these regulations, the DOT and certified medical examiners work together to make our highways safer through standardized protocols for all DOT examinations through certified experts.

Q: hoW important to your body iS controlling StreSS?

a: Stress does not merely afflict your mind; it can also affect your body. In fact, long-term stress can lead to a wide range of illnesses – from headaches to stomach disorders to depression – and can even increase the risk of serious conditions like stroke and heart disease. We typically think of dangerous situations triggering our bodys stress mechanism. This mechanism gets our body ready to flee these dangerous situations, such as increasing our heart rate, increased blood pressure, and increasing our blood sugar for energy. Unfortunately, not only do dangerous situations trigger this response, but other types of stress; worry over dept, anxiety, work conflicts, and others. It is important to learn ways to deal with stress, such as recognizing when you don’t have control, and let it go, focus on what makes you feel calm and in control, develop a healthy living and wellness lifestyle. Exercise is an excellent stress reliever. Taking 10-15 minutes a day to walk, run, or do yoga goes a long way to relieving stress. There are also medications that can help you cope with stress. Talk to your doctor to inquire about stress relief and medication options.

Q: Will my SpouSe and i need marriage counSeling during our cuStom home build?

a: Potential clients often have anxiety about the cost overruns, multitude of decisions and likelihood of miscommunication and confusion that is associated with custom home building. The reality is that next to raising a family, purchasing a home is one of the largest decisions a couple will make together and the dynamic of each relationship is unique. The most common potential cause for conflict is when there is disagreement as to the target budget for the home. It is difficult to make any real progress without consensus on the size, features, design or budget for the build and lingering uncertainties often cause conflict during the construction of the home. Custom home builders first and foremost must be good communicators. As a result, it is important to select a builder who has the tools to keep each spouse informed by providing accurate project milestones, selection scheduling, budget tracking, and realistic allowances. A builder’s organization of not only its own employees, vendors and subcontractors but also clients is critical to keeping the agreed upon closing date and allow for a positive custom home building experience. Ultimately, there is always some level of anxiety when building a home, but these suggestions should provide for a quality home and marriage for years to come.

“If you want to talk perennials, annuals, trees and landscaping, I’m your guy.

But I don’t know a thing about advertising. That said, Midcontinent Business

Solutions™ made it happen, and I never even had to get my hands dirty. My rep

came out, learned about my business, then her team came up with the script

and everything. The crew that shot my ad? They knocked it out of the park. My

commercial even won an award. I still don’t know anything about ads. But I know

who to call to get noticed and get results. Midcontinent Business Solutions.”
