he went, he found a crowd ofpeople. Several cars were onthe roads.

There were someshowrooms at the other side ofthe road therefore; he tried tocross the road in order to have alook at them. Since he wasunaware of the traffic rules andregulations, he was hit by a car, coming from the opposite sidewhile he crossed the road.

Chintu Jackal saw himbeing hit. He immediatelynoted down the number of thecar and then, rushed to Pinkuin order to help him. The carhad crushed Pinku’s legs andsped away. Pinku lostconsciousness due to excessiveloss of blood.

Chintu Jackal narrated thewhole incident to the trafficpoliceman, Hira Bear. Hira Bearcalled the ambulance. He tookthe number of the car fromChintu and asked his co-workers, on the walky-talky tocatch the car with that number.

Soon the ambulance cameand after helping the wards tosettle Pinku in the ambulance,Chintu too got into it.

March (First) 2011 5

Page 6: Champak March (First) 2011

Doctor Golu Elephant admitted him immediately. He inspected Pinku and said, “Look, the car hascrushed both his legs badly. He has even lost a lot ofblood. I am trying my best but there is a possibilitythat he might lose his legs forever.”

On hearing this Chintu became very worried. Hesaid, “Doctor, I do not even know him. Whom shouldI inform?”

“This is what I found in his pocket. I think there isa note on which his residential address is written. Please call someone from his family immediately for Ican operate only after that,” said Golu Doctor.

Chintu hired a taxi and went to Champakvan toinform his family about him. Pinku’s parents, his

friends and close relatives reached the hospital as soonas they got the information regarding Pinku’s accident.

All of them were tense and most of them cried onseeing the condition of Pinku. They pleaded withGolu Doctor, “Doctor, do anything to save his life.”

“I am doing the best I can. But, you have to wait tillthe operation is done.”

Pinku’s parents and friends were praying to god.The operation was successful, but both his legs wereof no use any more. Everyone went to his room andwhen Pinku gained his senses, they all tried to pacifyhim.

Pinku cried a lot when he saw his parents, “I cameto the city without informing you. This is thepunishment that I have got.”

“Do not say such things. Everything will be allright,” said his father caressing him.

He screamed when he saw his legs, “What has

happened to my legs? Will I never be able to walkagain?”

Binni Rabbit said, “Pinku, we all are there withyou. Why are you worried? You will not face anyproblem as long as we are alive.”

After a few days he was discharged from thehospital.

Pinku would lie in his room all the time and think.‘I will never walk again in my whole life. Now I haveto accept to be like this forever.”

His friends visited him and tried to make himunderstand that he should not worry. They tried tocheer him. They used to feel his pain but were totally

helpless to solve this problem. One day, they all wentto meet Doctor Golu and said, “Doctor Uncle, tell us away to get rid of this problem. Our friend will die ifhe has to continue living like this for a longer period.”

“There is only one solution for this wheelchair. Hecan work and do all routine jobs, sitting on it. He caneven go to the school with the help of a wheelchair. Hecan be with you and roam around with you, sitting onit,” suggested Golu Doctor.

All the friends smiled with relief when they heardthis. Doctor said, “But a wheelchair is quite anexpensive product.”

“You do not have to worry about it, just tell us theplace from where we can get one,” asked Binni

Rabbit. Each friend contributed their pocket money and

bought a wheel chair. They put it outside Pinku’sroom. Then they went inside and said to him, “Let usgo out, Pinku.”

“Are all of you making fun of me?”“No, we can never do that,” said Cheeku. He got

the wheel chair inside the room and said, “Look, nowyou can roam around freely. You can maneuver it byyour own hands and can even come to school.”

Pinku sat on the wheel chair. Bunty pushed hischair out of the house. It had been two months sincehe had come out of his house. He was quite happy tofeel the fresh air of Champakvan. He looked at hisfriends and said, “Friends, how can I thank you all? Ican come to school and roam around like others.”

Pinku’s parents also saw this and admired theirtrue friendship.

BUNTY MONKEY, along with his youngerbrother, Buntu, was returning home from hisfriend’s house. Bunty was riding the bicycle

and Buntu was sitting on the carrier. “Brother, hurry up and ride home quickly. The

road is isolated and it is going to be dark soon. I amquite scared.”

“Do not be scared, Buntu. We will reach the marketarea in just five minutes,” said Bunty as he rode thecycle in speed.

Just then, two people came in front of them andstopped their bicycle. Their faces were hidden.

“Leave this cycle here and run away otherwise youwill be in trouble,” threatened one of them, whoseface was hidden with a black cloth.

“This is our cycle. We will not give this to you,”replied Buntu.

“Do you want to live or not?” said the person, whose face was hidden in a red cloth. He even tookout a knife from his pocket.

“You be quiet, Buntu,” said Bunty, as he wasscared his brother would get hurt by the knife.

“He is right. Now, empty your pockets for youcannot imagine what we can do to both of you,” saidone of the robbers.

“Wait, let me check them and find out what allthey have in their pockets,” said the person, whoseface was hidden in the red cloth. Then, he startedchecking Bunty and Buntu.

“They have only Rs.20 and three to four toffees intheir pockets.”

“Keep this with you,” said one of them laughing.“Are you carrying anything else, like watch,

mobile phone, etc.?

Page 11: Champak March (First) 2011

“No. we have only books,” said Bunty as heshowed the books to the robbers.

“Ho…ho…ho… these books are of no use to us.Now, you leave the cycle here and go home. Do notturn back otherwise…” threatened the person whowas hiding his identity in the red cloth, brandishingthe knife in front of them.

“We will leave,” said Bunty and threw the booksintentionally near the cycle tyre.

“Pick your books quickly and leave from here atonce.”

“We are going,” said Bunty and he got down topick the books. He loosened the valve of the

cycle tyre at the back and the air started coming out ofit. Then, Bunty and Buntu ran away from there.

“Brother, our cycle…”“Bunty, just follow me. Let us get out of their sight

and then, we will talk,” said Bunty. After some distance, they stopped and stood at the

back of the tree and started observing the two robbers.“Brother, they will take our cycle.”“Buntu, I have loosened the valve of the back tyre

of the cycle, due to which the tyre will deflate themoment some pressure is applied on the cycle. Then, they will have to walk and we will be able to easilychase them.”

“Brother, what was the need to loosen the valve inorder to chase the robbers?”

“Oh Buntu! If they rode the cycle, then they wouldhave sped away and we would not have been able tochase them. Now, they have to walk and we will beable to find them,” explained Bunty.

Both the robbers took out their masks as soon asthe two brothers had left.

“Lalu, they are gone now. No need to worry. Let usleave this place.”

“Come, let us ride the cycle and go home,” saidLalu Hyena to Sattu Jackal.

As soon as Lalu sat on the carrier of the cycle, thetyre deflated with a loud sound.

“Oh! The cycle punctured as soon as you sat on it.Now, we have no other option but to walk,” said Laluand they started walking.

“Brother, both of them are going.”“Yes. Now, we have to follow them quietly,” said

Bunty and they started following the robbers. The two were enjoying the toffees and reached the

market after some time.

Page 13: Champak March (First) 2011

“Sattu, look there, police!”“Lalu, what are we afraid of? How will they come

to know that we have robbed this cycle?” asked Sattu, and Lalu smiled.

Lalu and Sattu were crossing the police, whensuddenly both the brothers, who had been followingthem, started shouting, “Thief! Thief! Catch hold ofthem… They are running away with our cycle.”

Lalu and Sattu took fright when their secret wasrevealed in front of the police. Even before they couldthink about running from there, they were caught bythe police.

Bunty and Buntu narrated the whole incident tothe police and Lalu and Sattu were arrested. Thebrothers got Rs.20 along with their cycle.

“Well done kids! Your alertness and presence ofmind saved your cycle today. The two robbers also gotarrested because of that,” said inspector Tendu.

“But, we lost our toffees. They ate all of them,”said Buntu pointing the robbers. At this, the policeinspector and Bunty started laughing.

Pusy Monkey was riding the cycle very fast. Itwas only 10 minutes ago when Bhoppu Monkeyrang his mobile phone. Bhoppu was crying over

Pusy immediately replied, “I am coming rightnow, friend. Stop crying. I will take you to thehospital.”

Pusy took his cycle to reach the old tree. Bhoppuand Pusy had studied together in school. But Bhoppustopped studying in the middle of the session. Pusy’sother friends told him that Bhoppu was sitting idle athome and did not do anything.

Pusy reached the tree and called out his name,“Bhoppu… Bhoppu… Where are you?”

He did not hear any response. Pusy noticed a pitunder the tree. Is Bhoppu inside it? Pusy calledBhoppu on his mobile phone, but it was switched off.He took a spade, lying near the tree and starteddigging the earth. He dug the earth but could not findhis friend. He rang his friends, Rangu Monkey andNeel Monkey, and asked them to come there. Thethree started looking for Bhoppu. Pusy thought thatBhoppu must have fallen in the mud. With the help ofRangu and Neel, Pusy dug the whole place around thetree.

Page 19: Champak March (First) 2011

After 2 hours, when all the friendsgot tired and sat under the tree, theyheard Bhoppu’s laughter from the treeabove. Pusy looked at him in surprise,“Bhoppu, you are sitting on the tree? You were watching me while I waslooking for you. You saw how worried Iwas. We dug the whole place aroundthe tree and you…”

“This is it. Friend! I was not able todig this place alone. I thought about anidea of making someone else do thiswork for me. If I would have called youfor help, you would have made someexcuse. That is why I called you up andsaid that I was stuck in the pit, and see…my work isdone.”

Pusy got angry at this. He said, “This is cheating,Bhoppu. If you would have called me, I would havecome to help you. But you did not do the right thingby lying to me, Bhoppu.”

Bhoppu said carelessly, “Oh Pusy! This muchdeceit is allowed in friendship. What is there to getannoyed at?”

Pusy, Rangu and Neel, all the three friends werevery angry over this prank. Neel wanted to give ablow to Bhoppu for his behaviour, but Pusy stoppedhim, “Neel, we will teach him a good lesson by givinghim the same dose.”

Bhoppu’s house was ready now. He thought ofinviting his friends to his house for a party. Pusy gotthe news that Bhoppu was throwing a party for hisfriends. He quickly went to see Rangu and Neel.

March (First) 2011 19

Page 20: Champak March (First) 2011

Bhoppu arranged the meals for all his friends, outside his house. Banana puddings, almond cake, coconut and raisin rice were ready. His friends startedcoming by 6 in the evening. Bhoppu gave detaildescription of the hard work that he had put inconstructing his house.

Suddenly, it started raining. Bhoppu’s friendsstarted going into the house. Bhoppu kept shouting,“Oh! Somebody help me please. All these dishes aregetting wet.”

Nobody heard him. At last, Bhoppu also had toleave everything and go inside the house.

Looking outside from the window his friend, Peenusaid, “It is raining here only. The rest of the place

is dry. Look outside, it is dry everywhere.”Bhoppu was shocked. How can it rain only on his

house? He heard some noise from outside. He openedthe door and found Pusy, Neel and Rangu there. Theywere enjoying the tasty food laid outside.

Rangu looked at Bhoppu and said, “Bhoppu, ittastes good. You forgot to call us for the party. Butlook, we have come here on our own. After all, we putso much labour to build this house.”

Bhoppu was ashamed. He understood that it wasnot raining, but it was the mischief of Pusy, Neel andRangu. Before he could say anything, they finishedthe food and left the place.

Bhoppu’s other friends came out. The rain hadstopped but all the containers were empty. They alltaunted Bhoppu and went back home.

Finally, Bhoppu understood what true friendshipis.

family and the two were hot favourites amongchildren.

The children made a separate house for them in thestreet garden.

Pogo and Disney lived there, along with theirmother.

They would entertain everyone around them. Thewhole street looked empty, whenever they remainedinside their house for the whole day.

Everything was fine, till the day when Rosy bitGuptaji’s relative.

Rosy bit him because he was throwing stones atPogo and Disney.

Actually, Pogo and Disney loved everyone there. They would even lick their feet.

Therefore, they did the same with Guptaji’s relativebut he mistook their affection and tried to get

away from the two by throwing stones at them.Fortunately the stones did not hit either of the two.

Rosy was watching everything. She went andcaught hold of his leg in her mouth. He tried to hitRosy but could not do so.

Somehow, he reached Guptaji’s house and toldhim about the whole incident. Guptaji was furious. He immediately lodged a complaint with theorganization, for street animals.

In the afternoon, an ambulance from the sameorganization came to their locality. They had hugenets, which they spread all over the roads.

Most of the dogs of the locality got to know aboutthem beforehand, and hid.

Rosy, Disney and Pogo were looking for someMarch (First) 2011 23

Pogo got so scared that he started crying on seeinghis brother and mother trapped. But he left when Rosyordered him to run from there.

The people of the organization also caught someother dogs and cats of the locality and took them to thehospital. The street was desolate after Rosy andDisney left.

Pogo was so depressed, that he even stoppedeating food.

Page 25: Champak March (First) 2011

He would sit silently in the garden throughout theday.

Within two three days, he became weak andlooked feeble.

After all, his mother and brother were taken awayfrom him.

Days passed. Suddenly a ‘kuku’ sound was heardin the street.

When 10 year old, Jatin, came to the balcony, hewas amazed. He went inside and brought his motherto the balcony.

He pointed his small fingers and showed Disneyand Rosy to his mother.

Jatin’s mother was very happy to see Rosy’s familytogether once again. Pogo’s happiness knew no

bounds when he saw his mother and brother back. Hekept jumping all over the street to show hisexcitement to everyone.

Actually, the organization caught the streetanimals and took them to their hospital. There theywere given treatment, if they were suffering fromsome ailment or given proper vaccinations and thendropped in the same place from where they had beentaken.

That day, the van of the organization droppedRosy and Disney after they had been properlyvaccinated and injected for anti-rabies. Then they puta small cut on their ear to mark that they had beenvaccinated.

Rosy’s family was together again. Even though itwas unintentional, Guptaji had done a wonderful jobfor the dogs.

THERE WAS a fat mice, named Thulthuli. Sincesummers were approaching, she startedlooking for a hole near the river bank. She was

quite lazy. ‘I will not have to go far to drink water, ifI live near the river.’

There were some trees on the bank. She startedlooking for holes in them. But did not find, any placegood enough to live in. Disappointed she sat under atree. Chanchal Mynah was sitting on the banyan tree. She came to her and asked, “Sister Mice, what is thematter? Why are you worried?”

Thulthuli answered, “I need a hole to live in.”Chanchal replied, “I know about a

good place, where you can live. Butthe soil is coarse and stony. Youcannot shape it as you like.”

Thulthuli said, “First, show me the place.”

Chanchal showed herthe hole in the ground.Thulthuli went insideit and came out. Shesaid, “It is a bitcramped, but, Ithink, I willmanage.”

Thulthulistarted living

in it. There were farms nearby. She was happy to livethere.

Thulthuli got a good quantity of grain when thefarmers cut their wheat. She would carry the grain toher hole the whole day.

When her hole filled up with the grain, shethought, ‘Now I can live happily. I can lie back all daylong and enjoy the food. Now I need not step out ofthe house for food.”

The river flowed close by, therefore Thulthulibuilt a channel, to bring the

water from the river to themouth of the pit. This madeit convenient for her todrink water. She thought,‘Wow! I think these arethe best days of my life’.

Thulthuli’s physicalactivities decreasedand in a few days, shebecame fat. She had

trouble movingabout in her ownpit. But lazyThulthuli didnot botherabout it. Shecontinued to

eat plenty of food and drank water whenever she wasthirsty.

One day, the grains finished. She thought, ‘Now, Ihave to go out in search of food.’

But what was that? As soon as she put her footforward she found she was stuck. She screamed andshouted for help. She even tried to nibble the stones, but her efforts were in vain.

Chanchal came every day to her and inquired abouther welfare. She asked, “Sister Mice, how are

you?”Thulthuli started crying, “I am stuck in this pit.

Please take me out.”Chanchal asked, “How did it happen?”Thulthuli replied, “The pit has become small. Ask

the farmer to get his tools and break open this pit.”Chanchal replied, “Do not even think about it. If

he struck the pit with great force, you would die and itwould become your grave.”

Thulthuli said, “Then ask someone to pour oil inthe pit. My body would get oily and I will slip easilyout of the pit.”

Chanchal said, “This will not work. Even then youmight die if too much oil gets into the pit.”

Thulthuli said, “Then, go and get a rope. I will tieit around my neck and you pull me out.”

“How can I murder you? Tell me how will you tiethe rope? Can you move your limbs work in thisposition?”

Thulthuli lost all hope, she asked in desperation,“What should I do now?”

Chanchal said, “Be calm. I will think of some way.”

Chanchal went away and did not return the wholeday. Next morning, she came and asked, “How areyou, Sister?”

Thulthuli screamed in anger, “Why did you leaveme in trouble and go away? You never once think that

I might die of hunger. Have you brought some grainsfor me?”

Chanchal said, “There is a shortage of grains in thewhole area. You have to live like this till the crop is cut.”

Thulthuli said, “So, you plan to kill me like this.Tell me; are you my Sister or my enemy?”

Chanchal said, “I am thinking about your own

good. Have patience!”Chanchal went back home and Thulthuli cursed

her for her indifference. Chanchal did not come to meet her again, that day.

Next morning she asked, “Sister, are you alive?”

Thulthuli was very distressed. She said, “Yoursister is dead. You have killed me of hunger and

still you ask me these questions. I will not leave you, once I come out.”

Chanchal started laughing. She said, “You arestuck. You cannot do anything.”

Thulthuli became red with anger. She said,“Okay…wait and watch.”

She tried hard to push herself out. Next moment, she was out of the pit. She ran to catch hold ofChanchal.

Chanchal said, “Think before you come after me.Look you are finally out. And also think how youcame out.”

Thulthuli said, “Oh yes! I am, finally, out of my pit.”Chanchal said, “You have come out because of my

plan.”Thulthuli asked, “What have you done? You left

me starving, right?”Chanchal said, “Yes, that’s it. Your hunger actually

helped me. You became weak day-by-day and then, Iirritated you, so that you tried to come out and catchme. Now, tell me, am I your sister or not?”

Thulthuli was ashamed. She had tears in her eyes,“You are very nice, Chanchal. Now, I will never repeatthis mistake. I will shun my lazy habits and will go fora walk every morning.”

MINI AND Rini were twins. Theyloved each other very much butthey fought a lot. Both their

parents worried when they saw them fight. They would always purchase the samething for both of them.

Even then, the sisters fought a lot.

A Lovely Birthday Giftby Priti Kumari

They always preferred the other person’s things. Their birthday was approaching and they were

quite excited about it. They planned many things forthe special day. The parents decided to buy manypresents for them.

Mini said to Rini, “Rini, your complexion is dark. Therefore people will not look at you, they will onlyadmire me as I am more beautiful. Hence, you give meyour red frock; I will wear that on our birthday.”

This angered Rini. She thought if she had a faircomplexion, she would have looked as beautiful asher sister. People would have admired her and given

her nice gifts. But now, she had to part with her bestbelongings for her sister. She loved her red frock, which she handed over to Mini.

Mini was extremely happy to get the frock. Theirmother ordered a nice cake for both of them, on theirbirthday. Mini wore Rini’s red frock. She wasshowing off her nice red dress to her friends, wholooked and admired her.

Rini wore her old frock and came out of the room. All their friends started laughing at her.

One of their friends said, “Oh Rini! Why are youwearing such an ugly dress?”

Another said, “Even if she would have worn a nicedress, she would have looked the same. Look at Mini. She is so good looking.”

Rini started crying when she heard this. But sheknew that if Mummy would see her crying, she wouldscold Rini for this. She calmed down and wiped hertears and came to the table to cut the cake.

Mummy had decorated the table, on which thecake was placed.

The cake was in the centre of the table, withbeautiful shiny candles. Mummy had festooned thewhole room with balloons.

Rini thought that Mini would fight with her if shecuts the cake first. So she said, “Mini, you cut the cakefirst. I will cut it after you.”

Mini was excited. She came to the table to blow thecandles and then, cut the cake. Everyone sang “HappyBirthday to you…”

Suddenly, Rini noticed that a lighted candle hadfallen from the table, and set the table cloth on fire.

March (First) 2011 43

Page 44: Champak March (First) 2011

Now the fire was spreading and Rini’s frock wasabout to come into contact with it.

Mini was busy cutting the cake and everyone wassinging the birthday song.

Rini was frightened. She wondered what wouldhappen if Mini’s frock caught fire. She ran to Mini, pushed her aside; pulled the table cloth and threw iton the floor.

By then, the whole table cloth was aflame. She putthe carpet on the table cloth. Everyone was amazed tosee this. They came forward to help her.

Mummy and Papa requested all the children toassemble in the garden.

Everyone was scared after this incident. Mummypacified them. Mini was so scared that she held on toher mother tightly.

She knew the fire would have burnt her if Rini hadnot saved her. Tears rolled down her cheeks when shethought of it.

Then, she remembered the time when she hadinsulted her sister in front of others and made fun ofher.

Even after all that Rini had saved her life. ActuallyRini was more beautiful than her sister for she wasblessed with inner beauty.

She had given Mini the best gift by saving her life. Mini ran to her sister, who was standing quietly in

one corner, and said, “Rini, you are so sweet andbeautiful. Please forgive me for my misbehaviour. Iwill never repeat it.”

Rini started crying at the change in her sister. Thiswas the best present for her too on her birthday. 44 Champak

“No, Tinki. What will I do with this pink saree? My red saree does not look good now. I want to buy anew red saree to wear on this Tuesday.”

“Wear this pink saree on some other day, then.”“No, Tinki. I always wear a particular colour of

saree everyday. White on Monday, Red on Tuesday, Green on

Wednesday, Yellow on Thursday, Blue on Friday,White on Saturday, Orange or Yellow on Sunday. Thispink saree is of no use to me.”

“That means, you do not wear any other colourthan these,” said Tinki astonished.

“Every day belongs to a particular planet that hasa particular colour. If you wear that colour on

that day, everything is favourable for you. Did younotice that even though we were late to get out of thehouse, still we got a bus to the market?”

“That is all right, Aunt. But there could be someother reason for that.”

“You children do not believe easily,” said Tina asshe picked up the packet of saree and moved out ofthe shop.”

“Oh! Aunt, look at that poster. Maharaj Sher signhas organized a cooking competition which will takeplace tomorrow in the food fair. If Sher Singh likesthe food; the person would be rewarded a fridge. Auntonly you should get the fridge,” said Tinku in greatspirits.

Tina was famous for cooking good food in thewhole forest.

“Definitely, I will make malai-koffta. Do youremember when I gifted it to Mr.Sher Singh, on hisMarch (First) 2011 51

birthday? He licked his fingers after eating it.” Next day, Tina was ironing her saree. The

vegetable vender shouted from outside and she wentout to buy the vegetables for the competition.

“Aunt, is something burning?” asked Tinki as sheentered the house. Tina ran inside the room.

“Oh! My saree… I had to wear this to the foodfair,” said Tina inspecting the saree.

“Do not worry, Aunt, you can wear some othersaree. Try that new one, if you like.”

“No, Tinki I have to wear a green saree. I cookwell, but today it is risky in this. Today is Wednesdayand it is good to wear green on Wednesday. I will winonly if I wear a green saree. Let us go and buy a greensaree from the market.”

“But Aunt, you have to make arrangements for the

Page 53: Champak March (First) 2011

competition as well. We will be late if you wentshopping now.”

“I will come back soon. It is only 11:00 am justnow.”

Tina took the purse and rushed to the market. Shewas back by 12 o’clock.

“Everything is falling apart today for I am wearingthis blue saree. First I missed the bus then I had towait for a taxi.

But now everything will fall back into place. I haveeven got a green coloured plate to serve food toMaharaj Sher Singh.”

Tina wore her new green saree and started puttingall the spices and vegetables in the containers. Just

then, the phone rang, it was Tina’s friend, MinminSquirrel.

“Tina, what will you cook today? I will make aloo-matar. It is you who will get the first prize. Lets see, ifI can get the second or the third prize…”

“I will make malai-kofta. You put some matar-aloo, it will taste even better.”

They started talking on the phone and kept talkingfor quite some time.

Tinki said, “Aunt, you have to arrange everythingnow and have to make preparations for thecompetition.

We will take at least half an hour to reach the foodfair and then you have to put all your things theretoo.”

Tina said all the best to Minmin and put the phonedown. She took a big basket with all the ingredientsin it and reached the food fair. March (First) 2011 53

Page 54: Champak March (First) 2011

As soon as the bell rang, everyone startedpreparing their dishes.

Tina cut the onions and put them to cook and gotbusy in cutting other vegetables. But she could notfind the box of spices anywhere.

“Oh! It seems I have left the box at home in hurry. Now, I can’t even send anyone to get it from home.”

She asked from other the participants to lend hersome, but they refused to give for they had broughtonly a small quantity .

After a long wait, she at last got some left-overs.But by then the onions got burnt. She quickly cut theonions again. But the burnt onion stuck to thecooking-pan. So, it emitted a burnt smell andproduced a lot of smoke.

‘There is no time left to buy the onions, I have toadd the spices. I can’t understand anything. I’mgetting confused,’ she somehow made the dish.

Maharaja reached the food fair.

He came straight to Tina’s table. He tasted thedish and made an expression of loathing. He

spitted it out.“Disgusting… what have you made?”He tasted all the dishes and gave the first prize to

Minmin. Tina did not get any prize.“You cook the best food in the whole forest; even

then you lost the competition. That is because youconcentrate more on colour than on your preparations.Had you done it otherwise, you would have got thefirst prize,” said Tinki.

“You are right, I will no longer trust this colour-scheme and will focus on my work,” said Tina.

AASTHA ALWAYS complained, “Mummy,Driver Uncle never stops the bus.

He always scolds me but never says a word to otherstudents. He even asks me to sit with the smallchildren; due to it my uniform gets dirty.”

“Driver Uncle gets the bus in front of the houseexclusively for you. He even waits for you when youget late. Doesn’t he?” Mummy asked.

Aastha nodded and agreed to what her mothersaid.

Her school bus would pick the students from thecolony and then take the route, from the main road, tothe school.

Whenever Aastha was late for school, she wouldrush to the other end of the colony to catch the bus.

Once she forgot to take her water bottle, hermother hurried to the other part of the colony andgave her the bottle.

One day, while boarding the bus, Aastharemembered, that she had forgotten her chart on thestudy table.

She had prepared the chart just a day before andforgot to pick it up from the table.

She was very worried. As soon as the bus reachedthe other part of the colony, she went to the front gateof the bus and said, “Driver Uncle, just wait for twominutes,” and rushed back to her house. Driver Uncle

Mummy could not comprehend from where shecame and where she went.

But, after a few minutes, she came backcomplaining once again, “Mummy, the bus has gone.I missed it.”

“Why do you think, it would wait for you?” saidMummy.

“Finally, Driver Uncle has to drop all the studentsat school at the right time. You should have kept trackof the time,” said Mummy.

Mummy started her scooty and asked Aastha to sitat the back. They chased the bus.

“Mummy, Driver Uncle could have waited for

me,” said Aastha, sitting at the back of the scooty.“No, it was not his mistake,” Mummy did not want

to scold Aastha in the morning. One day, Aastha was not feeling well. But she had

to sit for an exam that day, so, it was important for herto reach school on time. Mummy made a cup of gingertea for her.

She gave her medicines and a water bottle andsomehow made her sit in the bus.

The bus was just half way, when Aastha startedpuking. Aastha did not understand how to control it;she placed her hand over her mouth. But both herhands and her uniform got dirty.

Prakriti and Gauri informed Driver Uncle about it.Driver Uncle turned his face and saw that Aastha wasreally unwell.

He parked the bus on the side of the road. He

brought his water bottle and a clean cloth for her towipe her hands and uniform.

Driver Uncle also gave her a sweet and sour candy, which made her feel better. That day, Driver Unclewas not in a hurry. He asked Aastha if she was feelingbetter.

By then Aastha felt better. Driver Uncle started thebus. Driver Uncle drove the bus in high speed andreached the school on time.

Aastha appeared for her English test. She thought,“Driver Uncle is a very nice man. But she could notthank him for helping her.”

As soon as she was home she told everything toher mother and requested her to thank him. Hermother smiled for she too wanted to thank him forthe same.

THE SPARROW felt the need to make a nest forherself, as the monsoon was near. But Chunkiwas not sure about the place where she could

make a nice nest. She was sitting and contemplating on this

problem. She was confused whether to choose thesacred fig tree, evergreen mahogany tree or ziayphustree.

Her mind veered in confusion. Even aftercontemplating for a long time, she could not reach aconclusion.

Finally she thought of going to the trees and askingthem.

She thought, ‘Whichever tree offers me to live onit, I will make my home there.’

She immediately flew towards the fig tree, sat on itand whispered, “Brother Fig, can I make a nest onyour branch?”

“No. Do not even try to do that. Look there, a crewof crows resides on that branch of mine. Crows areyour enemies; they will not let you live in peace, if youcome to live here. Better search another tree to makeyour nest.”

“Thank you, I must leave now. I think I should askthe mango tree. He would give me a nice branch tomake a nest.” Chuinki flew directly to the mango treeand said, “Hey! Brother mango, I have come here tomake a nest on your branch. Will it be alright if I didthat?”

Page 68: Champak March (First) 2011

“On my branch?” asked the tree in surprise.“Yes.”“But there is no space. A parrot resides inside the

hole of my trunk and his friends sit on my branchesthe whole day. Moreover, these orchid plants havefilled all the space on me.”

Chunki said, “Alright. I would leave now. Shereached the acacia tree and asked the same question.

He replied, “Chunki, I personally do not have anyobjection. But Baya has gone just now saying that she

will make 4-5 nests on mybranches. You must be awareof the fact that she makes hernest only on thorny trees. Soyou have to decide where youshould make your nest.”

Chunki thanked him andflew towards the rosewood treeand asked if she could make hernest there.

Before rosewood could answer her question, anowl came out from the tree hole and said, “Get lostfrom here. Can’t you find any other tree to make yournest? I live here with my whole family.”

Scared Chunki flew away from there. She wasdisappointed to receive this kind of response from allthe trees.

She lost all hope and decided not to go anywhere. She kept on flying. A crow noticed her and startedpursuing her.

Chunki was scared and tried to hide under awindow pane of a house. When the crow followed her,the owner of the house did not allow the crow to staythere.

Now Chunki felt safe and secure. That verymoment, she decided to make her nest under thewindow of the house.

She started collecting pieces to make her nest andworked hard for some time. Finally she made a nicenest for herself.

From that day onwards, all the sparrows startedmaking their nests outside the houses, under thewindow panes.

Not every animal of the forest was aware of thisfact, but Cheeku Monkey discovered it while playingin the forest. His mouth watered when he found thebig tree, laden with delicious mangoes. He had nevertasted such luscious mangoes before. He ate until hisstomach lled.

Next day, when his friends inquired why he hadnot come to eat mangoes he replied that he was ill. But, as soon as his friends left, he rushed to the bigtree to eat the mangoes alone.

This became his daily routine. Every day he wouldpretend to be ill and take medicines from PampuJackal and then rush to his favourite tree as soon

as he was alone. After a few days, some animals started doubting

him. They thought it would be good to checkthoroughly what ailed him that he did not eat anymangoes with his friends.

Gillu Squirrel was deputed by all to nd out thetruth for she lived on the same tree, as Cheeku.

Next day, Gillu went to Cheeku’s house to askabout his health. She was amazed to see the

house. Cheeku was not there and the medicines, which he had taken from Pampu, lay scattered in thewhole room.

She informed everyone about this. All the animalsgathered and planned to nd out the truth. JumpyMonkey was supposed to chase Cheeku. Jumpy foundthat Cheeku went to a special tree regularly andenjoyed the tasty mangoes alone.

Next day, Cheeku was shocked when he reachedthe special mango tree.

He was surprised to see so many mango kernelsand skins lying around the tree. He could not gureout the reason behind it. He was thinking about it,when suddenly everyone came out laughing frombehind the bushes.

Cheeku was ashamed for now he knew that hissecret was out.

Maharaja Sher Singh then came and told him,“There is no fun to enjoy your food alone. One shouldalways share.”

Cheeku understood that lesson and after that day, everyone enjoyed eating juicy mangoes together fromthat tree.

He was about to lick the huge eggs, when suddenlyhe heard a voice from behind, “Do not even dare totouch my eggs.”

Snaky turned and saw a huge bird behind him. Hewent numb with fear and tried to slide away fromthere.

But the eagle caught hold of him in his claws andSnaky started bleeding. He tried to escape and fellfrom the tree.

He was badly hurt for he had fallen from a greatheight.
