I am excited to welcome Patrick Gauthier as our new Youth Minister as of August 12th. Patrick comes to us with many years of experience working with teens; first as a high school math teacher at Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor and then as Youth Minister in Corvallis, Oregon. As a teacher, he felt called and compelled to full time ministry as a Youth Minister. His faith and enthusiasm are contagious. His main focus will be our middle school and high school members and outreach to those, in that age group, who are not yet part of Becket. He will also be charged with encouraging our young people and young adults to volunteer as ministers, especially liturgical ministers. You will learn more about his background and his plans for the ministry in the coming weeks. We hope you are able to meet him after the 10 AM and Noon Masses at hospitality today in the Family Life Center. On the weekend of September 7th and 8th (the weekend of the picnic) he will introduce himself to you in person at announcement time at all the Masses. Patrick will be present here full-time. He will follow a flexible schedule, but you will always see him on Sunday around church. Feel free, as teen or parent, to introduce yourself to him and share your dreams for the ministry. Welcome to the Team, Patrick! This is a reminder that the petition form to end Dismemberment Abortion in Michigan is available for signature today in the Conference Room after all Masses. If you miss the opportunity to sign the petition this weekend, it will continue to be available in the parish office for the next month. The petition will be available during all regular office hours. Also, don't forget Sr. Norma and the needs of her Respite Center in McAllen, Texas. More information and a brief video about Sr. Norma's work is also available this weekend in the conference room. If you wish to

MEN: 10 REASONS YOU NEED A GET-AWAY
WEEKEND All men of the Parish are invited to attend the annual 2019 St. Thomas a Becket Retreat Sept. 20 - 22. The retreat will be held at the Saint Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat Center, a great facility located on 35 beautiful wooded acres. This year’s theme is: “Who do YOU say that I am?" Here are 10 reasons why YOU need this weekend get-away:

Peace and restoration
Answers to a current pressing life issue
Renewing your relationship with God
Release from tension or fear
God's help in making important decisions
Getting love back into your life
Good food and good fellowship
Motivational talks
A rich blessing and a new start “This year our retreat will be such a journey, all of us crying out our own prayers of longing to know the Lord, of yearning to feel His presence and love and the difference that love can make in our lives.” Fr. Pat Brennan, C.P. Cost should not be a factor and is left up to a suggested free will offering. Please contact Dennis O'Beirne at 734-223-3336 or Manny Colon at 734-981-6645 if you are interested. The Case for Life Persuasively Communicating
The Pro-Life Message
The Christian worldview has something important to say about every facet of life. Using science and philosophy, this workshop will equip you to answer two basic, but crucial questions in the battle for life: Who are the pre-born? & What makes humans valuable? Being prepared to answer these two questions will help you simplify the abortion debate and stay focused on the main issue. Come and learn to speak intelligently and winsomely to the defining moral issue of our times. Our workshop leader will be Mike Spencer of Life Training Institute. Mike considered himself “pro-choice” until shortly after coming to faith in Christ in 1983 when the church he attended showed the pro-life film, The Silent Scream. Upon being confronted with the reality of abortion, Mike became deeply convicted and prayed for God’s forgiveness, offering himself as a voice for the unborn. Mike serves as our Midwest Director of Training and travels extensively throughout the United States equipping pro-lifers on high school and university campuses, in churches and serving as the keynote at pro-life banquets and conferences. Mike is a gifted and much sought after communicator who has a passion to equip others to speak to the often emotional and divisive issue of abortion in a way that is both gracious and kind. Please plan to join us for this FREE 2-hour workshop in September. You will leave empowered to confidently and compassionately stand for the unborn. When: Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019

Choir Season Resumes Thursday, September 12th at 7:30 PM We take the joy of singing seriously. Very seriously. After all, we’re facilitating the worship of our Creator—the God who gifted us with the profound beauty of music. We’re the Liturgical Choir at St. Thomas a’Becket and we’re looking for new singers and instrumentalists who enjoy the opportunity to sing and play beautiful, vibrant music. We rehearse on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM. There are many wonderful musical opportuni-ties that await us this year, including the Rainbow Youth Conference Mass at the Renaissance Center in Detroit, and the St. Cecilia Sing choir festival at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. If you love singing at mass and you know that God has planted the gift of music within you, then now is the perfect time to let your talents grow and be nurtured within a supportive, musical family. We are blessed to have an incredibly diverse, talented, and thriving music ministry at St. Thomas a’Becket. Come and help us make seriously great music.

Wednesday Night Bible Study;
Galatians and Romans
As we move toward the new school year, St. Thomas offers an opportunity to enrich your faith and knowledge through the study of Sacred Scripture. On Wednesday, September 4th, we will be starting a new Bible study group about St. Paul’s letters to the Galatians and Romans. This study has 14 sessions, incorporating an introductory session (September 4th), four lessons on Galatians (September 11th - October 2nd) and nine lessons on Romans (October 9th – December 11th). This study opens with Galatians because it was written first. The commentary includes a helpful

Last weekend we welcomed the following children into the Catholic Christian community:
ELEANOR KATHERINE McGLADDERY, child of Steven and Bethany (Atwell) McGladdery. Godparents are Jeffrey McGladdery and Kristen Atwell. We pray for the parents and godparents, and for all who will be there to her faith as she grows. Help them to realize that she belongs to the Lord, and teach her what it means.
Being poor can be very complicated. Many questions come up with no easy answers. Where and how do I seek help? Will I qualify? Will any of my friends or relatives help me? Where will I go if I lose my home? How can I provide for my children? What will others think of me? In many cases, the persons we Vincentians meet have a big mess on their hands which they are desperate to set right, but occasionally we are asked for something simple. Once a woman requested pots and pans so she could prepare food for her family - her old ones were no longer serviceable. Another woman was in need of shoes for a son who had only one pair. The problem was he wore a size 15 and she could only special order them at a cost too prohibitive for her budget. A man was seeking help to pay for his seriously ill wife’s prescriptions. A grandmother needed food for her hungry grandchildren who came to her each day after school. A man just released from a long hospital stay needed food and household items. Situations like these are easy to fix, and we are happy to do so. It would be wonderful if all cases could be so simple, but as we all know, life doesn’t always work that way. Whatever the needs that are presented to us - big or small - our Conference strives to help in whatever way we are able. We are people blessing people, hoping to assuage some of the worry from another’s stressful life. We appreciate your participation in this work of ours.
St. Vincent de Paul, pray for us,
our benefactors and those we serve.
Please remember we can only take NON-PERISHABLE food (nothing that
needs refrigeration) in the wagons, and please check expiration dates
on the containers.

TEACHERS NEEDED!!! Please share your gifts and your faith with our children. We need teachers for Monday and Wednesday evenings. Easy to follow, step by step lesson plans are supplied. Please contact Betsy for more information. If you see me with red eyes all week, it is because we dropped our son off for his freshman year of college. He will be studying sports management at the University of South Carolina. This school seemed the perfect fit for him in regards to the program and the campus is beautiful. I am so excited for his new adventure. Good luck to all those kids going to school and to the parents who have to let their babies fly! There is still time to sign up your child for religious education classes this fall. Please pick up a form on the credenza outside the Faith Formation Office or go online to print a form. Please be sure to fill out the medical information, as well.
