My Mom, Dad, Judy and I went with Change A Life Uganda to teach Chess to students at St. Lawrence School in Uganda. Uganda is a country in Africa and my family and I flew there on LONG plane ride. I got to teach chess at a school named St. Joseph’s Primary School in Nabbingo, Uganda. They were very excited to learn a new thing like Chess and everyone was coming into the room to see what we were doing. Their teacher Mr. Morish learned how to play Chess with us and was he very excited as well. We had a nice time teaching the class how to play Chess. We drank soda and my Mom made funny pictures of some the children who weren’t playing Chess. Everyone was gathering around to watch us play Chess and we got to play basketball, hangman, tic-tac-toe and a lot of other fun things while we were there. We had a GREAT time and I hope to go back again really soon!! Change For Chess Visits Primary Schools in Uganda Change for Chess was started by Timmy & Judy Cusack, along with their father Timothy S. St. Lawrence Primary School: Fifteen Students and Five Teachers from St. Lawrence Primary School participated in the Change For Chess Program. Over a 3-Day period the Students were introduced to the game of Chess by Timmy & Judy Cusack. The students were avid learners and I believe the Program is going to continue to develop into a Great Chess Club.

Progress Report: Since our departure from Uganda the Chess Program at St. Lawrence Primary School has continued to flourish and has grown the number of students and teachers participating in the Change For Chess Program. St. Joseph’s Primary School:

We were only with the Students at St. Joseph’s Primary School in Nabbingo for one day, but the eagerness and desire to learn was clearly evident. The Learners were like sponges that just soaked up all of the information we provided them and were happily playing Chess after we left for our time at St. Lawrence Primary School in Migyera, Uganda

Progress Report: The Learners at St. Joseph’s Primary School are lucky to have a dedicated teacher and advocate in their current Chess Teacher, Morish Ogwang. Due to Mr. Ogwang’s guidance and constant updating on Facebook, we are able to see the growth of their program online through his Posts. Their Chess Club has tripled in size and they have also added 3 additional teachers. We have already shipped additional supplies to them in Nabbingo including; additional Chess Sets, teaching materials, scorecards and clocks for adding the time-keeping element to the Chess Club in the near future.

Phiona Mutesi or Bobby Fischer. Here at Change For Chess, we are about giving every child hope and the opportunity to develop themselves as individuals and critical thinkers first. If these young Learners then take the skills they learn from playing Chess with us and go into business, sports, education, entertainment, whatever, it doesn’t matter. Of course, there will be a few who will go on to become strong chess players, but it’s the larger number of Learners who do not that Change For Chess is and should be focusing its efforts on. It is focused on ‘Teaching the Teachers’. ”

th e Do rm s with th e G irls at St . La wre nce Scho ol. My experience in Uganda was phenomenal. I had so much fun. Seeing how much each adult and kid had to strive everyday just to survive nearly broke my heart. I wish I could have helped them more than I was able to. My favorite part of the trip was getting to change children’s lives by teaching them chess and making new friends. I learned so much from this experience and was lucky enough to go with such a wonderful team, who made my trip the best they could possibly make it!! ;-)

The mission of Change For Chess is to promote and support Chess as an Educational Tool that will energize and excite young Ugandan Learners about the joys of academic excellence, stimulate critical thinking, and enhance their emotional development. Integral to this is utilizing Chess as the centerpiece in bringing together children from various social and economic sectors of society, with the aim of promoting better understanding, respect and appreciation among the various Students, Teachers and Parents involved in the Change For Chess Program.

Change For Chess is not trying to make Grand Masters. We are not looking to find the next

Our Visit to Uganda Our First Day in Uganda Upon our arrival at the airport Father Lawrence Kimbowa and Members CALU’s Uganda Team met us on the ground at Entebbe. We then had lunch at the Diocese Headquarters in Kampala and visited the CALU Main Offices before heading to Fr. Lawrence’s Family Compound in Nabbingo where we would be staying a couple days at the start and end of our trip to Uganda.

Our Time in Nabbingo During our time at Fr. Lawrence’s Family home in Nabbingo we were able to visit the local Clinic and a few micro-enterprise projects as well as Teach Chess at St. Joseph’s Primary School. The children were intrigued by the many animals raised in the area such as; pigs, goats and chickens and even had the time to teach some of our fellow CALU Team members how to play Chess!! ;-)

Our Time in Migyera Our five days in Migyera were filled with visits to the St. Francis Clinic, the Quarters for Water Project Site, local secondary schools, several micro-enterprises, a few home visits including the home of our “Sponsored Daughter” Sylvia Nalule, as well as teaching Chess at the St. Lawrence Primary School to the eager Learners & Staff.

Our Time on Safari Our time at the Murchison River Lodge during our weekend Safari was like a mini-escape to Paradise!! The Rooms and Food were fantastic and the HOT Showers were a welcome Surprise. The River Safari was a Far Superior tour than the land-based version of the Safari, but we were able to get pretty close to some animals in the van.
