Pastor Wayne Sneller 9:30 a.m. May 20, 2018

Our third purpose that God has given to us is that you were created to ____________ like Christ.

This is discipleship! “…we speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ.” Ephesians 4:15

God wants you to become godly. He wants you to develop His _____________. He wants you to be more and more like Jesus. 1. How does God help me grow spiritually?

He uses the _____________. His truth to transform us! He uses other ______________ (fellowship). We learn from each other and we develop and grow in spiritual maturity. God wants you to ___________ up! “Then we will no longer be immature like children…” Ephe-sians 4:14

2. ________________ – the process of becoming like Christ – always begins with a _______________. Look at the Apostle Paul’s calling. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” Acts 9:6 God’s part and your part.

Christlikeness is the _______________ of making Christ like choices and depending on His Spirit to help you fulfill those choices. “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.” Philippians 2:13 Changing your ________________.

To change your life, you must change the way you _________________. “…let God trans-form you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you.” Romans 12:2

3. God has a purpose behind every problem. Three unexpected tools: God uses _______________ to teach us to ________ Him. “…trouble produces patience. And patience produces character, and character produces hope.” Romans 5:3-4 God uses _______________ to teach us to _____________.

Keep focused on _____________ thoughts. “Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right.” Philippians 4:8 God uses ________________ to teach us to _____________.

Trespasses are situations _______________ by other people to hurt us. “Ananias…Go over to straight street and (get Paul!)” Acts 9:11

Remember God is in ______. “You meant to hurt me, but God turned your evil into good to save the lives of many people which is being done.” Genesis 50:20 (NCV)

As we grow in discipleship, we can be confident of how God wants us to respond regardless of what we are facing. He wants us to grow into the character of Christ Jesus! “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5

*Apostles Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilot, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heav-en and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Consistory Notes May 16, 2018

Our meeting opened with scripture and prayer. The elders shared:

Central Iowa Classis Meeting will be held on May 24 at Celebrate Church in Knoxville. Teryl Ver Ploeg and Chuck Johnson will be the elders attending. A special session of Classis will be held on June 3 at 6:00 p.m. at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton with the purpose of installing Rev. Todd Rempe as pastor. Pastor Wayne will attend General Synod in Grand Rapids, Michigan June 6 – 13 as a Classis Central Iowa delegate.

The deacons reported the following: April giving: General - $51,102.12; Mission - $18,106.35; Sunday School - $106.26; Building - $613.05. Two headset microphones will be purchased for use in worship. A second plate offering for our Kentucky work trip will be taken on July 15. The work trip members plan to serve the congregation with a breakfast that morning. $100 will be given to Smoke on the Water to support Bryce Wehrle in his battle with cancer. Jeff Knouse’s Haiti mission expenses will be paid for as he is going as youth director. The building and grounds committee has been given the authority to pursue bids on paving the church parking lots. The bids will be broken into two parts. One bid for the north parking lot and a second bid for the south parking lot. The bids will include the concrete work, drainage and lighting. For information:

First Reformed Church has recently been blessed with unforeseen estate gifts that allow the board to explore using these funds to underwrite the cost of paving our parking lots.

The Phase 2 project that is being developed does not include the parking lots. Committee Reports:

Sound – An Ipad was purchased to be used in the Gathering Place for worship. Van – The van ministry has been discontinued through the summer months due to lack of riders. Fellowship – A new coordinator is needed for this ministry.

Old business: The status of the estates and wills left to the church by congregational members was re-viewed.

Phase 2 Building Report: SVPA (our Architect firm) is still gathering data to give an estimate of the renovation of the sanctuary project. They are gathering information related to asbestos removal, AV costs, organ relocation, design costs, seating, etc. We are waiting on a second quote for an asbestos survey.

God is good! For the consistory, Pastor Wayne
