Chapter 3
Internship Activities
In this chapter I describe the activities that I did during the internship program in
Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar. The description includes the
problems that I faced during the internship program and the solutions to the problems.
The general information of the activites during the internship
My friends and I did internship program in a group and we started our internship
program in Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar from 21 January to 1
March 2016. The group consists of 5 members: Alfathih Viqi, Ari Sudrajat, Dhuma
Wahyu, Febriana Intan and Bella Ednica Putri. All members have different jobs.
Alfathih Viqi was in charge of observing 15 tourism destinations, translating texts of; 2
tourism destinations, the list of beverage, and the profile of Karanganyar from
Indonesian into English. She was also editing texts of 2 tourism destinations on the
website, and promoting the website to the travel agent and promoting the website via
social media. Ari Sudrajat was in charge of observing 14 tourism destinations,
translating texts of 3 tourism destinations and the list of food from Indonesian into
English, editing texts of 3 tourism destinations on the website, designing the website,
and also promoting the website to the travel agent and promoting the website via social
media. Dhuma Wahyu was in charge of observing 14 tourism destinations, translating
texts of; 2 tourism destinations, the list of food, and the profile of Karanganyar from
Indonesian into English. She was also taking pictures of 3 tourism destinations,
designing the website, editing texts of 2 tourism destinations on the website, and
promoting the website via social media. Febriana Intan was in charge of translating
texts of 3 tourism destinations and the list of food from Indonesian into English,
observing 15 tourism destinations, editing texts of 3 tourism destinations on the website,
and also promoting the website to the travel agent and promoting the website via
instagram. And I was in charge of translating texts of 3 tourism destinations and the list
of beverage from Indonesian into English, taking pictures of 12 tourism destinations,
editing the pictures of 15 tourism destinations and culinary, observing 15 tourism
destinations, editing texts of 3 tourism destinations on the website, and also promoting
the website to the travel agent, domestic and foreign tourists.

We made an English tourism website containing information about the tourism
potentials in Karanganyar with the aim of making the potentials known worldwide.
The general activities carried out during the internship were:
Collecting information for the content of the website
My friends and I conducted observations and collected the data in the forms of
pictures and information about the tourism destinations in Karanganyar in the first week
of the internship program.
Designing the website
Together we designed the content of the website. We started from making the
content of the website, creating the website and simulating the use of the website in
front of the staffs of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar. All of the
activities took three weeks to complete.
Promoting the website
We spent one week promoting the website to the travel agents and public
including the domestic and foreign tourists. We did the promotion directly and by using
social media.
The activities during the internship
1.1.1 Meeting with the staffs of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar
On 21 January 2016 my friends and I had a meeting with the staffs of Dinas
Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar.
We first asked for permission to conduct the observation early and to add some
tourism objects into tourism destinations list, those previously not registered by the
staffs of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar. We also submitted the
estimated budget required for creating a website. Appendix-1 (page 21) shows some
pictures of our meetings.
Then we got the permission from Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan
Karanganyar to conduct the observation early and we also got the approval to add the
objects into tourism destination list. We received some books of tourism in Karanganyar
as references. The following is the list of tourism destinations that had to be observed:

And these are the tourism destinations that were to be added:

1.1.2 Doing observation at tourism destinations in Karanganyar
We did the observation to collect the data about tourism destinations in
Karanganyar. The tourism destinations included Jumog Waterfall, Parang Ijo Waterfall,
Madirda Lake, Pura Pamacekan, Puri Saraswati, Cetho Temple, Sukuh Temple, The
New Balekambang Theme Park, Agrowisata Sondokoro, Sekipan Hill, Astana
Mangadeg, Astana Girilayu, Astana Giribangun, Dayu Cluster, and Sapta Tirta
Pablengan. Appendix-2 (page 22-26) shows some pictures of observation activity.
We first made the schedule and we mapped the tourism destinations for doing
observation. Then my friends and I did the observation together. I did the observations
in 15 tourism destinations. I did the observations by taking pictures and looking for
information about the tourism destinations.
Then we got the schedule to do the observation and from the activity, I obtained
pictures and some information about the tourism destinations. I took pictures of 12
tourism destinations by myself. The tourism destinations were: Jumog Waterfall,
Parang Ijo Waterfall, Madirda Lake, Pura Pamacekan, Cetho Temple, Sukuh Temple,
The New Balekambang Theme Park, Agrowisata Sondokoro, Sekipan Hill, Astana
Giribangun, Dayu Cluster, and Sapta Tirta Pablengan. While doing the observation I
also got the information from 5 tourism destinations. I got the information about Pura
Pamacekan and Madirda Lake from the people living nearby and I got the information

about Astana Mangadeg, Astana Girilayu, and Astana Giribangun from the tour guides
of those tourism objects.
1.1.3 Making the promotional text for the content of the website
My friends and I made the promotional text for the content of the website. I made
the promotional text by doing discussion among the members of the group, lecturers
and foreigners (native speaker and non-native speaker). We did it in two weeks.
We first shared the list of the tourism destinations that would be included in the
content of the website among the members of my internship group. We also shared the
information about the tourism objects. Then I got the task to search for information
about Madirda Lake, Astana Girilayu and Sekipan Hill. The next step, I wrote the
Indonesian version of the content and I translated the texts into English.
Then I discussed those Indonesian texts with the members of the group. I translated the
Indonesian texts about Madirda Lake, Astana Girilayu and Sekipan Hill into English.
Appendix-3 (page 27-47) shows the steps of making the Indonesian and English texts
with the references as proof.
When I produced the English translation, these are the steps I took:
1. I discussed those English texts with my friends and I revised it based on the
group discussion.
2. I gave the revised texts to my lecturer (Mr. Bayu) and I revised it based on the
Mr.Bayu’s recommendation.
3. I gave the revised texts to my lecturers (Miss Nia and Mr. Budi) and I revised it
again based on their recommendation.
4. I gave the revised texts to my lecturer (Mr.Bayu) and I revised it again based on
Mr. Bayu’s recommendation.
5. I gave the revised texts to the foreigner non-native speaker (Carlos from Spain
but he lived in England 2 years). I revised it again based on Carlos’
recommendation in order to make my translation better and can be easily
understood by the foreigners who are non-native speakers.
6. I gave the revised texts to the native speaker (Greg from England) and I revised
it based on Greg’s recommendation, because Greg is native speaker, I used the
last version from Greg to be the final text that would be displayed on the
website.
After doing these activities, I got the information of Astana Girilayu,Madirda
Lake and Sekipan Hill from the observation activity and I produced the Indonesian and
English texts revised based on the result of the group discussion with my friends,
lecturers, non-native speaker and native speaker.

1.1.4 Designing the content of the website.
My friends and I were designing the content of the website in a week. We were
preparing, entering and adding the culinary as the content to the website.
My friends and I discussed about the layout of the website, inserted the culinary
as the additional item and then I made the English texts about some beverages. Included
in the list of the beverages are Wedang Ronde, Es Degan, Wedang Jahe, Kopi, Teh
Hitam, Teh hijau, Es krim Telo ungu. After that I edited and selected the pictures of the
food and beverages that were given by the Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan
Karanganyar. I also edited and selected the pictures of 15 tourism destinations. My
friends and I added the the pictures of the food, beverages and tourism destinations to
the content of the website. I also edited the texts of Madirda Lake, Sekipan Hill and
Astana Girilayu that had already been added to the website.
The results of these activities were the design of the layout on the website, the
English texts about beverages, and the new look of the website that included the
additional items such as the pictures of food and beverages, the final version of the texts
about Madirda Lake, Sekipan Hill, Astana Girilayu on the website and also the final
display of the tourism destination pictures.
1.1.5 Making presentation and promoting the website.
We delivered a presentation simulating the use of the website in front of the staffs
of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar, including the head of Dinas
Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar. After doing the presentation we improved
the website based on the results of the presentation.
At first I made the material for the presentation about the benefits of using English
language tourism website and the estimated budget required for creating a website.
Then my friends and I held a presentation, simulating the use of the website. I explained
about the benefits of using English language tourism website for Karanganyar and I also
explained about the estimated budget required for creating a website. While we were
doing the presentation, the staffs of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar
gave some suggestions related to the website. Their suggestions included adding lists of
hotels and restaurants and also tourism maps. With their help we found the content to be
added and quickly made this new content accessible from the website. Appendix-6
(page 55-56) shows some pictures of our presentation. I did the promotion and

dissemination of the website to the public including the domestic and foreign tourists by
using social media.
Appendix-7 (page 57-66) shows some pictures of the screen captures as the proof of the
promotion activity. I also did the presentation in front of travel agents directly to make a
deal about the project involving the two institutions mentioned on the website. I did the
presentation to the Mandira travel agent to introduce the English language tourism
website of Karanganyar. I offered a project to the Mandira travel agent to incorporate in
the Karanganyar tourism website. I explained to the staff of Mandira travel agent about
the project. They needed to make a tour package related with Karanganyar Regency
first, then we would input the name of the travel agent to the website, so the travel agent
can gain reach wider potential customers, the visitors of the website. From the activity,
the tourism destinations in Karanganyar can be known directly by the public, the
domestic and foreign tourists. Appendix-9 (page 69-70) shows the proof of promotion
activity to the travel agent.
The results of these activities were the material for the presentation about the
benefits of using English language tourism website and the estimated budget required
for creating a website. The other results were the followings. My friends and I did the
presentation well and the staffs of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar
were really satisfied with our presentation.We produced a new display of the website to
attract readers, because we added some of the content that was mentioned by the staffs
of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar such as adding the list of hotels, list
of restaurants and tourist maps. After we did the promotion to the domestic and foreign
tourists in 5 days, 471 visitors accessed the website. I also managed to make Mandira
travel agent join the project. Appendix-8 (page 67-68) shows some pictures of screen
captures of the layout of the website.
The problems and problem solving
1.1.6 Doing observation at tourism destinations in Karanganyar
The problem:
The first problem that we faced was the difficulty in mapping the tourim
destinations. While doing observations I faced the difficulty because the location of
tourism destinations were difficult to reach with limited time.

I also faced another problem. When I was entering and taking pictures of Sukuh
Temple, the security of Sukuh Temple did not allow me to continue. They informed me
that taking pictures required a license from Purba Kala Site, so I only took some
pictures from the outside. When I arrived at Astana Girilayu, Astana Mangadeg and
Puri Saraswati, I could not take the pictures of those places because at that time, I was
not allowed to enter those tourism destinations.
The problem solving:
We solved this problem of the difficulty of mapping the toursim destinations by
looking for the locations of the tourism destinations on the Google maps. We made a
schedule of the observations by mapping the tourism destinations in order to make the
observations more effective and take shorter time and effort.
When the security did not allow me to take the picture of Sukuh Temple, finally I
decided to use some pictures of Sukuh Temple from Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan
Karanganyar’s documentary files to complete the pictures of Sukuh Temple on the
website. When I could not enter Puri Saraswati, Astana Mangadeg and Astana
Girilayu, I decided to give the camera to Dhuma, so the pictures of those places were
taken by her.
1.1.7 Making the promotional text for the content of the website
The problem:
I faced problem while discussing the promotional text of tourism destinations with
friends, lecturers and the foreigners, because the time was very limited.
I faced some troubles while I was making the Indonesian and English promotional
texts of Madirda Lake, Sekipan Hill and Astana Girilayu because it was hard to find the
appropriate dictions to choose not only to create persuasive tone, but also contain good
information for each of those places. This was necessary to attract the readers to come
to those places.
The problem solving:
To make the work effective and efficient, we made a structured schedule for
discussing the texts with friends, lecturers, foreigners.
I handled each difficulty of making the Indonesian and English promotional texts
of Madirda Lake, Sekipan Hill and Astana Girilayu by looking for some information on
the internet about each of these destinations. I also used the Cambridge and Oxford

dictionaries as my references. In the end I was able to get all of the information I needed
about these three locations, allowing me to provide good details while staying
persuasive.
1.1.8 Designing the content of the website
The problem:
When we discussed about the design of the layout on the website, it was difficult
to agree upon the fixed design of the layout on the website and also the content of
website, considering different whishes of each member of the group.
I faced problem when I made the English texts about the list of the beverages that
included Wedang Ronde, Es Degan, Wedang Jahe, and Es krim Telo ungu.
I faced a problem related to the pictures, because there were a lot of pictures and I
took a lot of time to select and edit the best pictures to use for the final display on the
website.
We lacked of enough data sources, collecting materials for the content such as
pictures of the food and beverages required too much time and resources. So we had to
skip them and we told that problem to the staffs of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan
Karanganyar.
While reviewing the website, I found many issues with the texts of Madirda Lake,
Astana Girilayu and Sekipan Hill. These ranged from punctuation to slope, and required
me to spend significant time for reading and rewriting many parts of what was on the
site.
The problem solving:
We handled the problem about the design of the layout on the website by
searching for some references of the design in four tourism websites (London,
Mississippi, Stockholm, Liverpool) that could be a guide for us to make the website
attractive to foreigners. Combining our ideas with the insights from the site we looked
at, we were able to find a proper design. Appendix-4 (page 48-49) shows the proof of
the design in four websites.
I overcome the problem of making the English texts about the list of the
beverages by browsing some information on the internet. Appendix-5 (page 50-54)
shows the step of making the text of beverage.

I solved the problem of selecting and editing the pictures by doing the task
patiently, so I produced the best pictures for the final display on the website.
I took the pictures of the culinary items from Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan
Karanganyar because the time was very limited to take the new pictures.
I also edited the texts about Madirda Lake, Astana Girilayu and Sekipan Hill that
was on the site to get a good text without punctuation errors.
1.1.9 Making presentation and promoting the website.
The problem:
When my friends and I delivered a presentation simulating the use of the website
in front of the staffs of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar, it was a large
problem for us, since we wanted to make sure the head of Dinas Pariwisata dan
Kebudayaan Karanganyar was able to join. In addition, the difficulty in obtaining the
tools needed to deliver the presentation caused another problem.
We faced the difficulty when we added the information of the hotels, restaurants
and tourist maps. We lacked of the detail information related of the location and the
name of restaurants and hotels.
I also faced the problem while doing the promotion. With the difference of the
time for the countries of the foreign tourists and the limited number of foreigners who
become the target of the promotion made the promotion activity a little hard to do.
The problem solving:
We did coordination of the preparation of the presentation with marketing staffs
of Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Karanganyar about the right time to conduct the
presentation and about the necessary tools such as projectors and room.
We added the information of the hotels, restaurants and tourist maps. I looked for
the references of the restaurants on the Google map and tourism books to add
information about the restaurants.
I faced the difficulty of promotion activity by finding the right time to promote the
tourism destinations to the foreigners because the difference of time between Indonesia
and their countries. I used the social media to promote the website. The kinds of social
media that I used to promote the website were Instagram, Path, Facebook, Whatsapp
and Line. When I used the social media Instagram, I used the hash tag (#) with general
keywords to be able to be detected by foreign tourists.
