THE CLERGY LETTER

At the end of July ‘the circus came to town’ as we held our annual summer holiday summer club at St John’s Church in Pewsey. It was great to be together again after a successful virtual edition online last year. Around 50 children ‘rolled up’ during the course of the week and it was my privilege as the Ringmaster, The Great Marco, to preside over the proceedings. We had the usual fun mix of crafts, games, Bible stories and action songs. Biffy and Bongo (aka Heidi and Iain) ensured that there was plenty of clowning around with hand-buzzers, water, flour and custard pies. In addition the children had the opportunity to develop circus skills each day with activities such as plate spinning, balloon-modelling, balancing and juggling. Through the week we also focused on stories of heroes in the Bible and how their experiences related to roles in the circus. Amongst them was an escapologist, the Apostle Paul, who was imprisoned for being a follower of Jesus. In the book of Acts we read that even as he and his companion Silas languished in prison, they prayed and sang hymns. By God’s power the doors of the cells were opened and their bonds were miraculously unfastened! Our memory verse was taken from Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi, which he wrote while he was in imprisoned: “I can do all things through him [Christ] who strengthens me”

Philippians 4v13 Paul maintained his faith in God in the most difficult of circumstances. His words were an inspiration for us at Holiday Club and are inspiration for us at this time as we continue to face restrictions and uncertainty in our lives. From heartfelt experience, he speaks boldly to us of the blessing of God’s divine provision in the midst of need.

The Great Marco (Rev Mark Windsor)
