AMBERS Welcome to the online programme from Cheshunt FC.  There are links on most pages to other web sites, which we are expanding all the time. Please try the links  on the fixtures page  that take you straight to the league and cup fixtures. Likewise, clicking on the sponsors pages and where our competitors badge appears  will take you directly to their sites too. We trust you have all had the opportunity to spend time with friends & family over the Christmas holiday time,  We wish you all our Best Wishes for 2019, may it be a happy & healthy year for us all. Welcome to the match officials & the players and staff of our opponents today Hertford Town.  We eagerly await to see which side will turn up today, an up & down season has recently seen them put 5past Chipstead then lose their last two matches in local derbies against the Roms and the Abbey. The Ambers have worked on closing out matches , after all the 4 points dropped in draws with Chipstead & Bedfont would have seen us top of the table at the turn. The second half of the season must continue to see us compete for all the points , not a share.  As one of the few step 4 clubs to remain unbeaten in league games at home, extending that run today will set us up nicely for the second half of the season.  Don’t forget The NLP will still be in your shops every Sunday and still for just £1.50. Covering all levels from National Conference to Isthmian, and including results from Steps 5 & 6 too. The paper is fast-approaching its 1,000th issue. Drop them a line if you think there’s anything you’d like to see them mark the occasion with when they hit the milestone! DEAN WILLIAMSON

The Views of the Chairman

Welcome everyone to Theobalds Lane and a warm welcome to our visitors from Hertford also  today's match officials.  I trust you have all enjoyed the Christmas break , taken time with friends & family and have looked forward to this fixture.  I have to say not having a match on Boxing Day felt very strange this year, its been a tradition for as long as I can remember, so this match cannot come soon enough for me.  We were disappointed to say the least with the latest decision from the planning committee at Broxbourne Council, especially as three of the votes were cast by 'stand ins' !  However this is the nature of developments such as Cheshunt Sports

Village and we will review the feedback carefully and schedule further plans for the new year. Thank Goodness for football and the good form of the squad Craig has assembled.  The win at local rivals Ware was particularly pleasing on a number of fronts, a clean sheet, a derby win, another goal for top scorer Olu, the return of Hallett, and a great second half performance with a substitute keeper, Well Done Ash !   I was alerted to the fact that we are unbeaten at home this year, I look forward to continuing that run today,  We are also top of the league based on away matches only,  What a great springboard to launch an assault on the league title. Best Wishes for 2019

In The Dugout with

Craig Edwards

I would like to welcome everyone to Theobalds Lane today, and wish the match officials and our visitors, Hertford Town, a warm Cheshunt welcome. It has been interesting at the top of the table, with only 2 points covering the top six, and matches not always going with form, indeed we too have dropped points allowing teams a path back into games we should have closed out, but last week v Ware we appear to have cured that, I was particularly pleased not to concede, especially with Ash Silverman stepping in as a stand in keeper for the entire second half. (The advertising on his gloves was wasted, as he went for everything with his feet ! ) Massive Thanks to Ash to take the responsibility, & well done to the team for really taking it to Ware & forcing them on the back foot for all of the second half. Hertford are currently 16th in the league, but will be a tough test as a local derby, with a few former Ambers in their squad, but the Cheshunt team have trained well &are keen to put on a good display for our fans and secure the three points today.

This week’s NLP programme column, written by Matt Badcock FOOTBALL is a game to be enjoyed but there are times when you really end up questioning what it’s all about. The £5m golden handshake being given by the Premier League clubs to outgoing chief executive Richard Scudamore was one of those moments. It also brings home what the lower levels of football in this country is up against when cash of that amount is handed out at the drop of the hat. Yes, the Premier League does give money down to Non-League football and without it many clubs wouldn’t have been able to improve their facilities. But imagine how much more could be achieved and the good it could do for English football. Part of the problem is the disconnect between the top and the bottom. Non-League football couldn’t seem any further away from the riches enjoyed at the elite level. But, more crucially, the top clubs just don’t appear to give a hoot. And that’s what this payment to Scudamore says. Personally, no problem with players being well-paid. They are in an entertainment industry, pulling in the pound notes and they deserve to get their slice in what is a short career. I also don’t ever buy the argument that a player should simply hand over some of his wages just because a club has overspent and hasn’t paid their debts. That’s on them, not Alexis Sanchez, for example. It’s just tough to swallow a sizable hand-out when so many clubs are doing it the right way but still having to beg, borrow and steal to get by. When the news broke I had a rare rant in my NLP column because I feel it’s an insult to all those who put in the hard work throughout the season at our levels. It was from the heart. Let’s hope the Premier League show they have one too in 2019 and restore some lost faith. WREXHAM fans are understandably upset about manager Sam Ricketts leaving to take over at League One side Shrewsbury. The former Bolton and Hull City defender only took over in the summer but quickly showed he’s a boss with a bright future as he led the Welsh club to the top of the National League. But look at the bigger picture and it will hopefully be a boost to Non-League football if he can do well. Managers at this level rarely get a chance to step up. Opportunities are much more available to players. There are so many top bosses outside the Football League – it would be great if more get a shot higher up the ladder. DID you catch the amazing goal-line defending by Dulwich Hamlet last weekend? Wingate & Finchley couldn’t believe they hadn’t scored from a goalmouth scramble in their FA Trophy tie. Hamlet keeper Preston Edwards and some incredible desire from Ibrahim Kargbo kept the ball out as the Wingate peppered their goal – Kargbo finally throwing his head at the feet of an attacker to finally get the ball clear. The clip quickly racked up the viewing figures to well over two million. It shows the power of social media. Hopefully it might even lead to some new fans turning up at their local club over the coming weeks. It’s the sort of commitment to defending we can all appreciate. Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year to you all.

Hertford Town FC

The club commenced its career as Port Vale Rovers and used Hartham as their ground, then in 1907/09 the Town amalgamated withHertford Blue Cross, Mr R. W. Partridge was elected president and placed Hertingfordbury Park at the disposal of the club After the First World War the ground was gradually developed. A wooden stand was built, however this was destroyed by fire in 1946. The following year the ground's owner died which forced the club to drop out of football for a season due to the unavailability of the ground. The Hertford Borough Council then requisitioned Hertingfordbury Park and re-let it on a long lease. In 1950 the club built a section of covered accommodation on the River Lea side of the ground, opposite the changing rooms, and this was extended and fully completed in the summer of 1951. This spectator accommodation still exists today. The late 1950's saw the next major development of the ground. Pitch drainage was improved, a wooden clubhouse was built, the ground was fully enclosed with a concrete wall and in 1959 the present 300 seater stand with dressing rooms and boardroom was completed along with extra toilet facilities for the spectators in the ground. The covered accommodation opposite the stand was improved with a four step concrete terrace. A few years later a six step concrete covered terrace was completed at the South end of the ground behind the goal. This became known as The Stable End. Floodlit football was first played at The Park in December 1956,

however the current floodlight pylons were erected in late 1965. In 1974 a new clubhousewas built at a cost of over £25,000, which replaced the old wooden one. The ground then remained much the same for 18 years until on January 26th 1992 the clubhouse was destroyed by fire. This has been replaced with a smaller Portakabin building. The ground has an official capacity of 6,500 with 300 seats and covered standing accommodation for 2,800. Adjacent to the ground are 100 car parking spaces. In recent years the ground has seen disaster when the banks of the River Mimram & Lea broke and subsequently flooded the stadium leaving some damage to buildings & contents but miraculously helped the pitch! It is fair to say the ground has seen has seen its share of ups and downs over the years but it can be considered living history to anyone that passes through it's ancient turnstiles.

Ware 0 Cheshunt 1. by Stephen King With this reverse Ware's record of league

wins, draws and defeats now reads 6-6-6. Whatever your feelings about the mark of the beast there was no superstitious influence over this result with Cheshunt's second half performance making them deserving of the points. The first half had been an end to end contest between Cheshunt's long ball game with ballspumped up for Jason Hallett and Oluwole Akinsanya to chase, and Ware's probing attacks to break down a well organised defence. This difference in styles provided its own twist on the first half entertainment though the game never quite rose to the heights. Cheshunt's approach was to close Ware down quickly and to make life difficult for the home midfield with Dave Cowley in particular getting close attention. This did upset Ware's normal rhythm but even so they had plenty of chances before the break. Brandon Adams' snap shot from wide was cleared by Bobby Mason into the open space of his penalty area with no-one from Ware on the scene to make the most of it.

A through ball from Cowley then saw Adams volley wide before Frazer John's run from deep ended disappointingly when his final ball evaded Adams. Cheshunt's striking duo were always a danger whenever the ball was cleared upfield. Hallett tried an overhead kick that dropped into Anthony Page's hands after just three minutes and then failed to connect with a through ball ten minutes later. Meanwhile Akinsanya muscled his way through the home defence on 35 minutes but then shot high and wide. Just before half time a collision in the Cheshunt area saw Mason go down with what looked like a leg injury. After treatmenthe was back on his feet to save a shot from Albert Adu in added time but didn't reappear after the break. Instead outfielder Asher Silverman took over and it seemed Ware had been handed an advantage. But they failed to make the most of it and Silverman's qualities as a keeper were never really tested.

At the other end of the pitch Cheshunt started to apply real pressure with Ware unable to clear or work the ball forward. They were just not getting past the Cheshunt defence often enough to get a shot on Silverman's goal. If there was inevitability about the Cheshunt goal it still looked to have been much too easy for them. With twenty minutes to go a Ware ball forward didn't get much further than the half way line before being hefted back up field. With the home defence caught off guard Akinsanya had an easy run in on Page before hitting the ball past him and into the net. Ware fought hard for an equaliser especially after going three at the back and bringing on John Frendo in the closing minutes of the game. However, Cheshunt had played the right tactics in the second half to put pressure on the home side and protect Silverman from anyserious trouble and there just wasn't enough time to change that. Adams did come close in the second minute of added time but his shot from the same narrow angle from which he had scored in the two previous matches was this time across the face of goal and off fora goal kick. It was not to be his or his team's day with Cheshunt's control of much of the second half earning them the points. Photos Ian Bush @Bushypix

A Soft Spot for Other Clubs by

Mike BayleyThe predominant narrative of the modern football supporter paints us all as one club obsessives, but for many of us that all-encompassing obsession can be complemented with a number of “soft spots” for other clubs as well. When the subject of allegiance came up in my formative football education, I chose to read from a very outdated syllabus. Unlike my 1980s school peers, I shunned the ‘big five’ to follow sides from England’s lower divisions. On a given day, I could arrive in the playground wearing a Kidderminster Harriers cap or a Brighton & Hove Albion scarf. To some friends, this overt polygamy was anathema. As a fan of football, rather than a football fan, I wasn’t constrained by such tribal sensibilities. I soon found myself looking out for the results of a wide range of clubs and for a wide range of reasons. Family connections were responsible for some affinities. Holidays in Colwyn Bay fuelled a fondness for the North Walian side. And frequent trips to my seafaring Grandparents in Suffolk were synonymous with reading Felixstowe Town articles in the East Anglian Daily Times while everyone else watched Howards’ Way. Around this period, I wrote to hundreds of teams in England, Wales and Scotland requesting memorabilia. Dartford, then of the Southern League, replied with a six-page hand written letter from the ‘secretary and tea lady’ thanking me for getting in touch, along with autographs and a bundle of programmes. It ensured them a permanent place in my affections. So much so, that when the Darts lost their ground and withdrew from the pyramid in 1992, I felt a genuinesense of sorrow. What really piqued my emotions though, were team names. The more obscure, the better. On certain magical Saturdays, the Grandstand vidiprinter would churn out results from the early rounds of the English and Scottish Cups. Alongside Manchester United and Liverpool, appeared Gala Fairydean, Civil Service Strollers and Billingham Synthonia. It was a rare portal into a fascinating word, long before the internet shined a light on football’s darkest recesses. I developed attachments to a raft of new clubs that in some cases have stayed for life. What I couldn’t ascertain was how widespread this phenomenon might be. Was I just a bit odd? Or were kindred spirits lurking out there? So a few years ago, after the topic unexpectedly arose during an animated pub debate, I posted a message on a forum to see if anyone else had soft spots for random teams. The response was life-affirming. Among the predictable explanations – “my Dad was born in the area”, “a family member had trials” – were some fabulous rationales. A Hibernian fan liked Bangor City because he managed themto multiple title wins on Sensible World of Soccer, while a groundhopper from Kent was fond of Ebbsfleet United as he drove past their ground to go fruit picking.

Using a more mathematical approach, a Bristol City follower compiled a list of clubs in the top eight tiers of English Football and ordered them in distance of where he lived. Blyth Spartans were the furthest away. He has looked out for their results ever since. Outside of Great Britain, a few people expressed sentiments for Melbourne based Dandenong, a regular feature of the Sunday papers’ Australian Pools Coupon that signalled that start of a long and barren summer. “To pass the time during the close season, you also needed an Australian team and I plumped for Dandenong.” says a Brentford supporter. “I liked the name. Well, who wouldn’t?” Although most of these affiliations involve little more than a cursory glance at the relevant fixture lists, some fans take their interest to another level. A good friend of mine who loves Tranmere Rovers and steak in equal measure, has an ongoing affair with Cowdenbeath based on their name resembling cow-then-beef. After receiving a Blue Brazil scarf one Christmas, he made a pilgrimage from Sheffield to their Central Park home in Fife, a round trip of nearly 600 miles. As admirable as this dedication is, it does have drawbacks. Names are a major reason football fans develop soft spots for other clubs. They can be amusing, unusual or have personal significance. In my overactive mind, names conjure powerful connotations that seldom bear the scrutiny of reality. Recently, I discovered Shepshed Charterhouse FC weren’t, as I had once envisaged, imbedded in the rich top-hatted history of a public school, but named after Charterhouse Holdings, a garment manufacturer in the East Midlands. It was an illusion-shattering blow. Football forms part of an increasingly homogenised Huxleyan landscape. Sports shops stock the same narrow range of replica shirts. New grounds are engineered to look identical. Imagination offers refuge from this monotony. I’ve always pictured Highland Leaguers Inverurie Loco Works playing next to a siding full of vintage trains at the foot of a snow-capped mountain. It makes the idea of the clubvery appealing. Part of me would like it to stay that way forever. Then again, in worryingly unreal times, there is a strong case for casting off the shackles of fantasy and seizing the moment. So next year, I’ve promised myself a trip to the emotive sounding Forres Mechanics, a boyhood favourite. I doubt I’ll find philanthropic industrialists or scholarly men discussing vehicle maintenance in the damp embrace of a glen. But this doesn’t really matter. We increasingly conduct ourselves through a masked medium of online monikers that force us to construct an imagined world. Life shouldn’t be that impersonal. Sometimes it’s nice to put a face to a name.

Travellers TalesBrian Buck is a regular visitor to Cheshunt & attends all Spurs home matches, in addition he is also a Groundhopper, and has chalked up over 12500 matches. He records all his attendances and is kind enough to allow us to reproduce his notes to share with us all 164th game of the season. (Match 12,844) Tuesday 11th December 2018. Biggleswade United 2 Bedford Town 0 (Beds Senior Cup Quarter Final) att 89. This was a game in which both sides expounded a lot of energy. It was going to be difficult to pick a winner before even a ball was kicked. I’d seen United play quite a lot recently and so I knew about their much improved form this season, their technique, both with and without the ball and their staying power. This season they are not fading in the second half like they used to. In fact they are staying longer than most teams I’ve seen them play. As for Bedford Town, I haven’t seen them play this season, but I’m told that they too are looking good. However when I spoke to Andy Lloyd, a former manager of Potton United, at the end of the match, he told me that this was not Town’s full first team on show. Anyway the first half was full of industry and the ref was tested after just 4 minutes when he elected to give a Town player a lecture rather than a yellow card after he was taken out on his way to goal. He took a chance and by the end he was probably vindicated as he didn’t need to show any cards at all. United were much the better side in this period and you could hear the Town manager regularly shouting out, “Not good enough!” United took the lead on 30 minutes when the scorer was physically strong enough to rebuff a defenders attentions before shooting home just

inside the far post. After the break Town were mainly the better side and now United were often on the back foot, although they were very dangerous in breakaways and in one of them they missed a difficult chance to seal the match. But egged on by their fans, who are becoming quite influential in proceedings, the defining goal did come on 88 minutes, by way of a narrow angled shot or one which got diverted in by a defender. 165. (12,845) Wednesday 12th December 2018. Stevenage 2 Bury 4 (AET) (FA Youth Cup 3rd Round) att 300 approx. On the coldest night of the season so far we were treated to an excellent game of football. I know nothing about the visitors season, but Stevenage are having a great time and only lost their first league match on the previous Saturday and as I understand it they fielded a weakened side to make sure tonights side was fresh. However in the early stages of the game they seemed to freeze like us spectators and on 11 minutes Bury deservedly took the lead when a cross from the right was slid home. Ten minutes later and just as Stevenage were starting to get the ball forward they had a player sent off. Rightly so as the Bury player could take no further part in the match following this tackle from behind. Things got worse for the hosts as on 37 minutes they conceded again. The break couldn’t come quickly enough for the Borough as they needed the time to regroup. By now Bury had become a bit irritating. They were late out for the restart and then one of their coaches had the nerve to delay things even more by warming up his keeper. But in this period Stevenage played very well. They took the game to Bury and caused them lots of problems. On 64 minutes they pulled a goal back when Switters, their best player on the night was put in. He beat a player before confidently finishing. Things got even better for the hosts when 8 minutes later they equalised through Smyth who hooked home the ball with power. But with Bury at their mercy, even with ten men, they couldn’t finish them off and the game went into extra time. Unfortunately this was a step to far for the Borough and try as they did they conceded on 104 minutes and again with almost the last kick of the game.

167. (12,847) Saturday 15th December 2018. London School of Theology 4 St Albans Romans 3 (Herts & Borders Churches League Division 1) (Played at South Oxhey Playing Fields, The Pavillion, Green Lane, South Oxhey) (10.30am kick off) att 9. With my Friday night football being curtailed due to a couple of flimsy postponements I was back on the road again on Saturday with rather an easy double. So I parked up at Carpenders Park station and then walked the short distance to this ground, where the pitch was even worse state than it was on my previous visit, a couple weeks previous to todays game. All the other pitches in this large complex are better than this one, so why do they have to play on this cabbage patch. It was very cold today and so I converted my newly acquired blanket into a scarf. However I managed to keep out of most of the icy wind by standing under a tree. My shoes were already caked in mud, which was quite firm. So why was this ‘mud’ I was now standing in not quite so firm? Answer, this was not mud I was standing in! The ref wore a bobble hat and he looked frozen as well. This was a match between two out of the top three sides in the league, but for the first 15 minutes Romans played more like guards than soldiers and they soon found themselves 3-0 down. But they eventually played better and pulled a goal back on 25 minutes. This goal seemed to give them some confidence and they slowly work their way back into the match. Eventually goals on 51 and 60 minutes saw them equalise. However LST stuck to their task and they got the winner on 72 minutes to bring to a close an enjoyable match. 168. (12,848) Saturday 15th December 2018. Tottenham Hotspur 1 Burnley 0 (Premier League) (Played at Wembley Stadium (3pm kick off) att 41,645. After the previous match had finished I headed off to the pub, before catching a train to Wembley Central and walking to Wembley Stadium from there. By now the weather had changed significantly. It was still very cold but it was now also raining.

Fortunately where I was sat I avoided this and what little icy wind there was. But I imagine that conditions were very unpleasant for the players. But on the other hand if Harry Kane gets £200,000 a week, then I could have done ten minutes for £20,000! I don’t really know what Burnley’s actual game plan was here. Obviously it was to stop Spurs from scoring, but bearing in mind that by the end of the weekend they were in the relegation places then they really needed some points on the board today. But instead they played a tight 5-4-1 formation, one which Spurs struggled to break down. Spurs failure to do this until 90(+1) minutes was a black mark for them and although I could see the logic of Burnley playing football this way, what I and most Spurs fans, if not all, struggled with was their basic cheating whenever the ball went out of play. The ref eventually booked two Burnley players for timewasting, but he gave Hart too many lectures and no cards. Sean Dyche, their manager complained afterwards that Spurs won by using a long ball tactic. He’s got a bloody nerve, dictating to Spurs how they should play! @brianbuck66
