I refer to a few lines of a famous speech Winston Churchill made during the second World War: “Never in the field of human conflict… (dramatic pause) was so much… (dramatic pause) owed by so many… (dramatic pause) to so few!”

Yep, although it was meant for death-defying airmen, I’m sure it’s not that far-off to describe what we as people owe modern mothers.

Nowadays, between constantly looking cool for their kids and hot for their husbands, handling work pressures and making sure their kids aren’t corrupted by friends, television or the internet, I am quite sure that if you had a role-reversal and placed the airmen into what mothers face today, they would crack before they even found their “feet”!Mothers are the true few.

But, what I admire isn’t the dedication to their families, the back-breaking work they do…it’s the selflessness with which each mother does the job.

They believe they should be in the bleachers, not on the field. They are the coach to the player, the stylist to the model, the director to

the actor, the manager to the band and the partner to the star at the academy awards. They are the ones to gingerly disappear from the limelight, so that the really, really important person, you,can shine.

It’s the way it should be, theybelieve. They are only there to guide you as you smile and wave to the camera. To leave you tobe the next best thing!

And we, the little spoilt brats we are, forget so easily who got us there. When some other player or star gets on our nerves, we go and blow up at mum. Behind the scenes when the match is finished and the cameras aren’t rolling.

WHY?

Because we don’t dare take it out on other players or stars! We might need something from them later in life and someone is always there to take the brunt of our attacks or pick up the pieces afterwards.

So, this year, let’s remember this and celebrate. Give them an extra special special day this Mother’s Day. Heck, let’s make ita Mother’s Year!

And not just our mothers. Lets tryto spoil anyone that even just slightly fits the mothering role to us. Someone else’s mother, a sister, a best girlfriend, wife or a daughter!

And next time we as famous play-ers or stars see that our coach/ manager/stylist/partner in fame is silently removing themselves from the photo opportunity on the red carpet, yank them back into frame and push them forward!

And Mums, remember one thing. You’re special! So next time we throw a hissy-fit, pack your bags and threaten us. Say you’re fedup and running away from home.

We’ll change our tune very, very quickly.

If that’s a bit extreme, at least book yourself off on Mother’s Day and demand presents! Lots and lots!

The first time you hear a song, you’re not surewhat to make of it, then, like any complex music, the more youlisten to it, the more it grows on you. So unlike pop, which youlove at first and the more it plays, the more irritating it gets.

Even her style has influenced such stars as Rihanna andBeyonce Knowles, with the latter’s Videophone featuringa more toned-down Lady Gaga. Now, the only thing to dois to get the CD and find another single to grow on us.

Something interesting: When Gaga was 11 years old,she should’ve gone to the Julliard School of music, butinstead went to a convent.

During the summer holidays, we look at ourselves, and promise that next December we’ll have the perfect beach body. Then the new year starts and before we realise it, we’ve forked out enough gym membership to have put down a deposit on a new car, and we’re still our old selves.

Getting into shape is about more than just rushing through a whole bunch of machines. Not to say actually going to the gym isn’t part of the answer, but have you ever thought that the whole transformation could be a little less taxing.

Maybe it’s as easy as a change of routine?

Not starving yourself or gulping weird potions. Just a simple change.

for instance, I’m quite used to driving from point A to B. It doesn’t matter how far, or close, it might be.

Now, because it’s not constantly raining or snowing, I walk!

And running. A lot of people like it, but might feel cramped in the gym, or are scared that they might come down like a sack of potatoes in a slight lapse of concentration.

Luckily, Namibia is still one of the places where it’s relatively safe to run outside, and these days, as I drive to and from work, it seems it’s become quite a social thing to do.

So get some fresh air.

Not into the running thing?

find something that works for you. even if you get a trampoline and bounce around in the comfort and privacy of your own garden every morning!

eating well and and going to bed early will follow suit and your transformation will take place slowly, but surely.

Still not convinced?

Here’s something. Change you shopping habit. Instead of going for something specific, just go with that little voice strongly urging you to buy something!

You’ll indecisively walk around the entire Wernhil and Town Square and back and forth, from dress to dress, finding something, then seeing something else, then wondering whether you need that or want this! Go back again. Try on. Go back and try on again, only to go back and try on again and again and go back to the first shop at the end to buy it and then back to the white top at the second… or was it the first store…?

That’s enough to break a sweat and you’re doing something you love!

Well then, here’s the answer for you: Get a Wii!
