Welcome to Chickenshed – as we look forward to the next 40 years!Celebrations for our 40th anniversary year have exceeded all that we ever could have wished for! Our Festival Year culminates this autumn with an inspiring programme that truly celebrates those values and beliefs from which we have never wavered, and which will ensure our success for the next 40 years.

Our Studio Show this autumn is Alice on the Underground and we’re thrilled to be working together again with acclaimed writer-director Chris Bond (Sweeney Todd, Blood Brothers). First performed in 2003 the show has been updated and packs a wonderful theatrical punch. It is a ‘must-see musical journey’ which takes some of its inspiration from the dream-like figures of Alice In Wonderland, but very firmly transposes them into twenty-first century London! Full of curious characters and adventures, Alice on the Underground will be a rocking musical that’s not to be missed.

A huge highlight will, of course, be our Christmas Show, Peter Pan. It’s often said that it only feels like Christmas when our Christmas Show opens, and this production is certainly going to get everyone in the spirit of things as it will be a perfectly magical adventure for children – and adults who never grew up! We can’t wait to share it with you. The season also brings the return of our successful one-man show The Rain That Washes to Chickenshed for a final performance that will go off with a bang with our Afrika Explosion! evening, and we have our usual workshops for adults and young people, shows for little ones and Christmas specials, plus fantastic comedy, music and jazz nights. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

The RainThat WashesA remarkable and unforgettable story - back at Chickenshed following its national tour for a final performance

First performed in our intimate Studio Theatre in October 2011, The Rain That Washes has since played at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, in the West End and numerous venues nationally. Audiences and critics have been captivated by this compelling story of a 14-year-old boy who leaves Zimbabwe to join the revolution against white rule, and have heaped praise on this one-man show, awarding it four and five-star reviews. For those who enjoyed, or missed, it previously, here is the last chance to see this provocative and touching story. The performance will be followed by an evening of African music from the hugely exciting band Batanai from Harare, Zimbabwe.

‘This year’s must-see musical journey has to be Alice on the Underground from Chickenshed - punchy

Alice on the Underground

Going UndergroundTue 14 Oct | Mon 20 Oct 6.30pm (30mins pre-show)Studio Theatre to ticket holders of that evening’s performance

Join us for an informal discussion with members of the cast and creative team, as we discuss the importance of Alice on the Underground to Chickenshed, its history and development, and the approaches taken to update this piece for a new audience. Guests will have the chance to ask questions during an informative, lively and entertaining session.

Alice is a spirited teenager who yearns to find love and excitement beyond her humdrum life on a London estate. Running away from home, Alice is befriended by a busking and break-dancing White Rabbit, who takes her on a wild, magical and humorous subterranean journey on the Underground. Her adventures become curiouser and curiouser as together they encounter increasingly bizarre characters in London’s sinister underbelly. But does Alice find what she’s looking for?

Alice on the Underground was first performed in 2003 to huge acclaim and has been updated as part of our 40th anniversary year. With hints and suggestions of the familiar yet dream-like figures from Alice In Wonderland, the show also draws upon the stark realities of twenty-first century London life, and all combines to create a fast-moving, entertaining musical production.

Acclaimed writer-director Chris Bond (Sweeney Todd, Blood Brothers) returns to collaborate with Jo Collins and Paula Rees (Chickenshed’s Director of Music and Writer-in-Residence respectively) on a powerful production that drew its initial inspiration from Chickenshed’s inclusive and groundbreaking ethos, and that today still packs a wonderful theatrical punch!

Wendy Darling loves telling her brothers bedtime stories of the dastardly pirate Captain Hook and the heroic Peter Pan, and the children’s imaginations become reality when Peter flies into their nursery one starry night. Together they fly to a mysterious, magical land where children never grow up, fairies truly exist and bloodthirsty pirates really roam the seas. Join Peter, Wendy, Tinkerbell and the Lost Children on an exhilarating adventure as they take on the wicked Captain Hook and his pirates, determined to save Neverland and all that they believe in.

Peter Pan marks the stunning finale to our 40th Festival Year and will be the perfect Christmas adventure for children - and adults who never grew up! Chickenshed’s famously large and amazingly diverse cast will tell this much-loved family favourite with infectious music, song and dance that will captivate everyone aged 5 and above.

Tales from the Shed are vibrant, interactive theatre shows that are perfect for young children. They are informal, lively and amazingly engaging as the performers and audience share the same space - children are always encouraged to make a lot of noise and to make the story happen.

We guarantee that every show will be fun, really silly and that there will be plenty of colourful puppets and live songs. Every week we present different stories featuring the same much loved characters – from Can-Can the beautiful bird to laid back Lion Down and The Thing That Goes Blurgh!
