I look forward to this year with anticipation and hope. We are currently in discussion with several mining companies in establishing new and updated Memorandums of Understanding to ensure that Michipicoten First Nation is an active participant in discussions regarding our treaty and traditional territories; and that we are guaranteed informed consultation and accommodation through budgets and impact benefits agreements. We are utilizing the services of an Aboriginal Consultant on several mining projects including Goldcorp and the Borden Mine; Prodigy Gold and the Magino Mine; Island Gold through Richmont; and Wesdome Mines. We are in litigation in the courts with the province over the Bow Lake Wind Farm, because of lack of government consultation, whereby we are seeking an injunction based on the infringement of our treaty rights and how the ministries fast tracked a project within our territories without our “informed” consent. We expect to go to court sometime in the fall and will provide information to our citizens prior to that time. We have and continue to seek the support of the Robinson Superior Chiefs as well. As always, we are saddened by the loss of those who have passed into spirit over this past year and offer our prayers for their families.

Chief and Council held meetings on December 10, 2015 and January 28, 2016 and reports from Council are posted on MFN website www.michipicoten.com. The following are reported regularly on our website: Decisions and Minutes of Council Meetings under Chief and Council News. Financial Information and audited Financial Reviews. Membership Information Meetings. News Updates and Calendar Events. BUSINESS OFFICE & FINANCIAL SERVICES & DEVELOPMENT

Bank accounts are sufficient to meet financial requirements within funding agreements. The First Nation asked for and received the revenue funds earned through the Boundary Claim Trust in order to accommodate the Better Living and Funeral Policies. MFN will be entering into the annual transfer payment agreement with Indigenous Affairs and Northern Development Canada to ensure the continuance of funding throughout the fiscal year from April 2016 to March 2017.

COMMUNITY SERVICES The annual Christmas Dinner was held at the 10 plex on reserve and was well attended with a visit from Santa to the delight of all the children and youth. Language classes continue at the Cultural Lodge which are live streamed on the internet, and the Sports and Recreation program has been well attended. MFN participated in the Winter Carnival in Wawa with box races and the Youth Council held a Lip Sync competition. We have Aboriginal Support Workers at the High School and Elementary Schools in Wawa through Special Education to provide personal assistance to our students. We operate a Student Van and a Community Van for medical appointments.

MICHIPICOTEN FIRST NATIONS SAYS FAREWELL TO A GOOD FRIEND Leona Catherine Jacobs – November 7, 1942 – February 1, 2016 Leona passed into spirit at the Sault Area Hospital surrounded by her family. The funeral services were held on February 5, 2016 with interment at the Garden River Catholic Cemetery. Our community and citizens were saddened to hear of the loss of our dear friend, Leona Jacobs. Leona was a true sister and a frequent and welcome guest in the community; as well as a spiritual inspiration to those whose hearts she touched. She was a willing participant and facilitator at the annual Youth and Elders Gatherings, bringing her healing skills and teachings to all of us. We will miss her dearly. May she dance the shining way with her Ancestors.

PUBLIC WORKS, OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE Our Operations and Maintenance Crews have worked hard to keep the community clear of snow as well as providing repairs and assistance where required. Our Water Treatment Plant is operating well but will require upgrades in the near future. We hope to complete some of the repairs to the community rink starting in the spring and are awaiting news regarding a funding application for the prep work and free standing roof. It will soon be spring cleanup time and the start of projects related to road maintenance, soil erosion in some creek areas and maintenance at our dump site through our Waste Management Plan.

Washing your hands is the best way to stop germs from spreading. Think about all of the things that you touched today - from the telephone to the toilet. Maybe you blew your nose in a tissue and then went outside to dig around the dirt. Whatever you did today, you came into contact with germs. It’s easy for a germ on your hand to end up in your mouth. Think about how many foods you eat with your hands. You can’t wear rubber gloves all day long, but you can wash your hands so those germs don’t get a chance to make you or someone else sick. So when are the best times to wash your hands?

When your hands are dirty Before eating or toughing food (like if you’re helping cook or bake, for example) After using the bathroom After blowing your nose or coughing After touching pets or other animals After playing outside Before and after visiting a sick relative or friend

Now you have the when and the why of hand washing. But did you know that a lot of people don’t know how to get their paws perfectly clean? The next time you’re told to step up to the sink and scrub up, remember these handy hints: 1. Use warm water (not cold or hot) when you wash your hands. 2. Use whatever soap you like. Some soaps come in cool shapes and colours or smell nice, but whatever

kind gets you scrubbing is the kind you should use. Antibacterial soaps are OK to use, but regular soap works fine.

3. Rinse and dry well with a clean towel. Reviewed by: RUPAL C. GUPTA, MD (Aug. 2014)

Making a Will ensures that your wishes are carried out and your loved ones are considered. If you have any personal belongings, property or cash assets, you should have a Will. WHAT IS A WILL? -A person's will is a written document that sets out the person's wishes about how his or her estate should be taken care of and distributed after death. It takes effect when the person dies. WITH A WILL, YOU CAN… Decide who will inherit your personal possessions and land. Protect your loved ones by making arrangements for their well being. Name someone to administer (carry out your plans) your estate. Name someone to look after your dependent children. Be specific about who should have your personal belongings and keepsakes. Make arrangements for your business. Leave in-structions for funeral wishes. Leave a gift to someone outside the family. TO BE VALID, A WILL MUST… Be in writing (You can write your own or use Will forms available from various sources).

Be signed by you. State your wishes with respect to disposing of at least one of your assets, and State that it takes effect after your death. WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE WILL… Your Will should provide instructions for the distribution of all your land and personal property (ie. Money, jewelry, etc.) WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN MAKING A WILL / WHAT DO I NEED?… A list of the full names and addresses of your beneficiaries. A list of all your assets, real or personal property (these assets may include a commercial licence, crops, animals). A list of all your debts and the location of your bank accounts and other assets. Directions on the distribution of your assets and a list of special items you wish to give to specific people. The name of someone that you want to be your administrator (executor). WILL MAY… lessen the involvement of departmental officials in your private affairs. Avoid delays in settling your estate. Make the settlement of your estate a more personal matter. Help to avoid family conflicts by expressing your clear intentions. Protect any customs or traditions that should be passed on to your family. WHERE SHOULD I KEEP MY WILL? … If you choose to keep your original Will, put it in a safe place such as your safety deposit box (banks will usually allow your executor to take your Will from the box), a fireproof box, or a home safe.
