OPERAtION MAItRI

Nepal was hit by a major earthquake on 25 April 2015 with the epicenter at an area near Barpak, a mountain village between capital Kathmandu

and tourist town Pokhara. Immediately on learning of the devastating earthquake, Government of India moved into action and launched Operation MAITRI, a National effort to provide rescue and relief for our brethren in Nepal.

Gen Dalbir Singh, COAS , spoke to his Nepalese counterpart, General S.J.B. Rana, assuring him of full support as part of the National relief efforts. He remained in regular touch with him, especially in the initial days to ascertain their critical requirements and to organise its provisioning. The COAS

who is also the Honorary General of the Nepalese Army and President Gorkha Brigade said that:-

HELICOPtER EFFORt 206 & 301 Army Aviation Squadron were inducted and an aviation base was set up with five Army ALH and two MI-17 Helicopters and later the airfield at Pokhra was prepared in coordination with the Nepalese Army for landing of IAF aircraft directly at Pokhra. This allowed India’s relief effort an access to areas of Gorkha, Barpak and surrounding locations at a time when the Airport at Kathmandu was choked by

“There are a large number of ex-servicemen living in Nepal. We are specially concerned, given the deep ties with Nepal,”

“Whatever is needed will be done”

other international efforts. Army Helicopters conducted 1896 sorties and were employed to evacuate people from inaccessible areas and 1000 civilians were evacuated to safe areas in a joint effort with IAF. Adhoc helipads were also constructed at remote and inaccessible areas. Army helicopters have helped in delivering 866 tons of relief material to inaccessible areas in conjunction with Indian Air force. The Aviation Helicopters were also employed for induction of 1909 troops.

Meanwhile, Maj Gen JS Sandhu and Brig J Gamlin, both officers of the Gorkha Rifles were immediately asked to proceed to Kathmandu to coordinate the army`s relief efforts in synergy and hand-in-hand with the Nepalese Army. The Indian Army immediately stepped in to provide aid to the affected population and areas in close coordination and cooperation with the Nepal Army. The main task for the Indian Army was Rescue, Medical care and Relief. OPERAtION MAItRICOMMUNICAtION Appreciating the criticality of communications and coordination, a direct hotline was quickly established between the Indian and Nepalese Army HQs. Sufficient INMARSATs and High Frequency communication radio sets were also sent to ensure inter communication of the relief teams and detachments operating in Nepal. Besides coordinating with the Nepalese Army, Indian Army operated in complete synergy with other agencies and stakeholders such as IAF and NDRF under guidance of the Governement of India.

There was also a realisation of the advantage in sending relief material by road considering the air traffic congestion. Therefore a road relief column

with 10,000 blankets and 1000 tents from the Army’s stock was dispatched to affected areas for distribution through the Nepalese Army and various districts administration of Nepal.

MEdICAL tEAMS 18 Medical Teams (3x Field Hospitals– 4004 & 4033 Field Hospital and 60 Para Field Hospital) of 10 personnel each and 6 x Ambulances were inducted and were operating in Kathmandu, Pokhra and areas around it. The Medical teams not only established field hospitals around Kathmandu, but also sent Medical Teams to remote locations. The Field Hospital at Senimangal established an Operation Theatre, a Triage Centre at Tribhuvan International Airport and a Dental OPD apart from a Mobile Medical Team at Gorkha. A 45 Bed Hospital was established at Lagankhel apart from augmenting Medical resources of Nepalese Authorities by embedding own medical persons in civilian hospitals in Kathmandu and Pokhra. Medical assistance has been given to 4762 injured persons. This includes 300 surgeries, 216 hospital admissions and 4174 OPD cases.
