Why Hold Bicycle Safety Summits?

• Bicycle fatalities increased in 2011

• Bring people together to highlight EFFORTS and PROGRESS made in select urban cities

• Focus on problems and solutions

• Which cities? Tampa, FL and Minneapolis, MN

Bicycle Safety = Safety For All

• The more people that ride bicycles, the more people will be safe (Safety in numbers and awareness)

• Cultural change – where providing safe opportunities for bicycling will become The Norm

• Consideration for bicyclists will be considered at the planning and building stage – not an afterthought

Regional Bicycle Safety Summit• Focused on the Four E’s: Education, Enforcement,

Engineering and Evaluation

• Top level support was present

Education

• Bike safety IS linked to Traffic Safety• Recreational biking has transitioned into an

important mode of transportation• Quality of Life – everything must revolve around

this• Sustainability solutions must be supported• Public Health and Transportation have come

together – the integration is very encouraging!

Enforcement

Enforced and Respected• Bicyclist laws must be enforced

• Law enforcement training academies Need to teach and encourage bike laws as part of

training and they will become a normal part of law enforcement’s role

• New driver’s – Can be taught that bicyclists ARE a part of the road

Engineering

We must all work together with those planning our roads to create safe streets for motorized and non-motorized forms of transportation.

Evaluation

• Performance Measures – we must be able to show what we have accomplished

• If we don’t measure it, we don’t fix it or change it

• If people think biking isn’t safe it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy

• Bike Safety = Safety for all!

MN Department of Transportation“Share the Road” Safety Campaign

• Priority and goal is to eliminate bicycle-related fatalities and reduce crashes.

• Bicyclists and motorists are equally responsible for safety. Many factors contribute to crashes including inattention, distractions and limited access for bicyclists on roads.

• Provides materials, information and resources.

Nice Ride MNBike Sharing Program

• The bike share system became operational on June 10, 2010

• Phase 1 of the system included 700 bikes and 65 stations throughout Minneapolis

• In 2011 an aggressive expansion took place adding 51 stations and another 500 bikes. The expansion went to St. Paul and more areas of Minneapolis.

Nice Ride MNContinues to Grow

• The first season logged over 100,000 rides on Nice Ride bikes

• By the end of the 2011 season, users had logged an additional 217,000 rides

• TOTAL NUMBER OF NICE RIDES since inception to October 9, 2012 is 575,000!

• Nice Ride Minnesota is part of a growing community of people and organizations working for active lifestyles, vibrant cities and towns, and livable public spaces

• A “radical” notion four years ago has gone mainstream
